Let $k$ be a perfect field of positive characteristic and let $X$ be a smooth irreducible quasi-compact scheme over $k$. The Drinfeld-Kedlaya theorem states that for an irreducible $F$-isocrystal on $X$, the gap between consecutive generic slopes is bounded by one. In this note we provide a new proof of this theorem. Our proof utilizes the theory of $F$-isocrystals with $r$-log decay. We first show that a rank one $F$-isocrystal with $r$-log decay is overconvergent if $r<1$. Next, we establish a connection between slope gaps and the rate of log-decay of the slope filtration. The Drinfeld-Kedlaya theorem then follows from a simple patching argument.
It is conjectured by de Jong that, if $X$ is a connected projective smooth variety over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$ with trivial etale fundamental group, any convergent isocrystal $\mathcal{E}$ on $X$ is trivial. We discuss this conjecture when $X$ is liftable to characteristic zero, and prove the triviality of $\mathcal{E}$ in this case under certain conditions on (semi)stability.
Let $X_0$ be a smooth geometrically connected variety defined over a finite field $\mathbb F_q$ and let $\mathcal E_0^{\dagger}$ be an irreducible overconvergent $F$-isocrystal on $X_0$. We show that if a subobject of minimal slope of the associated convergent $F$-isocrystal $\mathcal E_0$ admits a non-zero morphism to $\mathcal O_{X_0}$ as a convergent isocrystal, then $\mathcal E_0^{\dagger}$ is isomorphic to $\mathcal O^{\dagger}_{X_0}$ as an overconvergent isocrystal. This proves a special case of a conjecture of Kedlaya. The key ingredient in the proof is the study of the monodromy group …
We show a Lefschetz theorem for irreducible overconvergent $F$-isocrystals on smooth varieties defined over a finite field. We derive several consequences from it.
For a Shimura variety of Hodge type with hyperspecial level at a prime $p$, the Newton stratification on its special fiber at $p$ is a stratification defined in terms of the isomorphism class of the Dieudonne module of parameterized abelian varieties endowed with a certain fixed set of Frobenius-invariant crystalline cycles ("$F$-isocrystal with $G_{\mathbb{Q}_p}$-structure"). There has been a conjectural group-theoretic description of the F-isocrystals that are expected to show up in the special fiber. We confirm this conjecture by two different methods. More precisely, for any $F$-isocrystal…
By works of Kedlaya and Shiho, it is known that, for a smooth variety $\overline{X}$ over a field of positive characteristic and its simple normal crossing divisor $Z$, an overconvergent isocrystal on the compliment of $Z$ satisfying a certain monodromy condition can be extended to a convergent log isocrystal on $\left(\overline{X}, \mathcal{M}_Z\right)$, where $\mathcal{M}_Z$ is the log structure associated to $Z$. We prove a generalization of this result: for a log smooth variety $\left(\overline{X},\mathcal{M}\right)$ satisfying some conditions, an overconvergent log isocrystal on the trivi…
In this paper, we introduce the notion of parabolic log convergent isocrystals on smooth varieties endowed with a simple normal crossing divisor, which is a kind of $p$-adic analogue of the notion of parabolic bundles on smooth varieties defined by Seshadri, Maruyama-Yokogawa, Iyer-Simpson, Borne. We prove that the equivalence between the category of $p$-adic representations of the fundamental group and the category of unit-root convergent $F$-isocrystals (proven by Crew) induces the equivalence between the category of $p$-adic representations of the tame fundamental group and the category of …
The minimal slope conjecture, which was proposed by K.Kedlaya, asserts that two irreducible overconvergent $F$-isocrystals on a smooth variety are isomorphic to each other if both minimal slope constitutions of slope filtrations are isomorphic to each other. We affirmatively solve the minimal slope conjecture for overconvergent $F$-isocrystals on curves and for overconvergent $\bar{\mathbb Q}_p$-$F$-isocrystals on smooth varieties over finite fields.
Let U be a smooth geometrically connected affine curve over $\mathbb{F}_p$ with compactification X. Following Dwork and Katz, a $p$-adic representation $ρ$ of $π_1(U)$ corresponds to an étale $F$-isocrystal. By work of Tsuzuki and Crew an $F$-isocrystal is overconvergent precisely when $ρ$ has finite monodromy at each $x \in X-U$. However, in practice most F-isocrystals arising geometrically are not overconvergent and have logarithmic growth at singularities (e.g. characters of the Igusa tower over a modular curve). We give a Galois-theoretic interpretation of these log growth $F$-isocrystals …
Let k be a perfect field of characteristic p>0 and W the ring of Witt vectors of k. In this article, we give a new proof of the Frobenius descent for convergent isocrystals on a variety over k relative to W. This proof allows us to deduce an analogue of the de Rham complexes comparaison theorem of Berthelot without assuming a lifting of the Frobenius morphism. As an application, we prove a version of Berthelot's conjecture on the preservation of convergent isocrystals under the higher direct image by a smooth proper morphism of k-varieties.
Let X be a smooth variety over a field of positive characteristic, and let E be an overconvergent isocrystal on X. We establish a criterion for the existence of a "canonical logarithmic extension" of E to a good compactification of X. In the process, we construct a category of overconvergent log-isocrystals and discuss its basic properties. In subsequent work, we will use these results to show that a canonical logarithmic extension always exists after pulling back E along a suitable cover of X.
This paper is a complement to the paper "On $p$-adic differential equations on semistable varieties" written by V. Di Proietto. Given an open variety over a DVR with semistable reduction, the author constructed in that paper a fully faithful algebraization functor from the category of certain log overconvergent isocrystals on the special fiber to the category of modules with regular integrable connection on the generic fiber. In this paper, we prove that, with convenable hypothesis, this functor is a tensor functor whose essential image is closed under extensions and subquotients. As a consequ…
In this paper, we prove a `cut-by-curves criterion' for an overconvergent isocrystal on a smooth variety over a field of characteristic $p>0$ to extend logarithmically to its smooth compactification whose complement is a strict normal crossing divisor, under certain assumption. This is a $p$-adic analogue of a version of cut-by-curves criterion for regular singuarity of an integrable connection on a smooth variety over a field of characteristic 0. In the course of the proof, we also prove a kind of cut-by-curves criteria on solvability, highest ramification break and exponent of $\nabla$-modul…
For varieties over a perfect field of characteristic p, etale cohomology with Q_l-coefficients is a Weil cohomology theory only when l is not equal to p; the corresponding role for l = p is played by Berthelot's rigid cohomology. In that theory, the coefficient objects analogous to lisse l-adic sheaves are the overconvergent F-isocrystals. This expository article is a brief user's guide for these objects, including some features shared with l-adic cohomology (purity, weights) and some features exclusive to the p-adic case (Newton polygons, convergence and overconvergence). The relationship bet…
An irreducible integrable connection $(E,\nabla)$ on a smooth projective complex variety $X$ is called rigid if it gives rise to an isolated point of the corresponding moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{dR}(X)$. According to Simpson's motivicity conjecture, irreducible rigid flat connections are of geometric origin, that is, arise as subquotients of a Gauß-Manin connection of a family of smooth projective varieties defined on an open dense subvariety of $X$. In this article we study mod $p$ reductions of irreducible rigid connections and establish results which confirm Simpson's prediction. In particu…
Let $C$ be a smooth curve over a finite field in characteristic $p$ and let $M$ be an overconvergent $F$-isocrystal over $C$. After replacing $C$ with a dense open subset $M$ obtains a slope filtration, whose steps interpolate the Frobenius eigenvalues of $M$ with bounded slope. This is a purely $p$-adic phenomenon; there is no counterpart in the theory of lisse $\ell$-adic sheaves. The graded pieces of this slope filtration correspond to lisse $p$-adic sheaves, which we call geometric. Geometric lisse $p$-adic sheaves are mysterious. While they fit together to build an overconvergent $F$-isoc…
Let $X/\mathbb{F}_{q}$ be a smooth, geometrically connected, quasiprojective variety. Let $\mathcal{E}$ be a semisimple overconvergent $F$-isocrystal on $X$. Suppose that irreducible summands $\mathcal{E}_i$ of $\mathcal E$ have rank 2, determinant $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}_p(-1)$, and infinite monodromy at $\infty$. Suppose further that for each closed point $x$ of $X$, the characteristic polynomial of $\mathcal{E}$ at $x$ is in $\mathbb{Q}[t]\subset \mathbb Q_p[t]$. Then there exists a non-trivial open set $U\subset X$ such that $\mathcal{E}|_U$ comes from a family of abelian varieties on $U$. As an…
We study (weak) log abelian varieties with constant degeneration in the log flat topology. If the base is a log point, we further study the endomorphism algebras of log abelian varieties. In particular, we prove the dual short exact sequence for isogenies, Poincaré complete reducibility theorem for log abelian varieties, and the semi-simplicity of the endomorphism algebras of log abelian varieties.
Consider a smooth log Fano variety over the function field of a curve. Suppose that the boundary has positive normal bundle. Choose an integral model over the curve. Then integral points are Zariski dense, after removing an explicit finite set of points on the base curve.
These notes provide an overview of various notions of hyperbolicity for varieties of log general type from the viewpoint of both arithmetic and birational geometry. The main results are based on our paper entitled "Hyperbolicity and uniformity of varieties of log general type." They are expanded notes from a minicourse the authors gave as part of the Geometry and arithmetic of orbifolds workshop at UQÁM.
Projective varieties with ample cotangent bundle satisfy many notions of hyperbolicity, and one goal of this paper is to discuss generalizations to quasi-projective varieties. A major hurdle is that the naive generalization fails, i.e. the log cotangent bundle is never ample. Instead, we define a notion called almost ample which roughly asks that the log cotangent is as positive as possible. We show that all subvarieties of a quasi-projective variety with almost ample log cotangent bundle are of log general type. In addition, if one assumes globally generated then we obtain that such varieties…
Let $K$ be a field which is complete for a discrete valuation. We prove a logarithmic version of the Néron-Ogg-Shafarevich criterion: if $A$ is an abelian variety over $K$ which is cohomologically tame, then $A$ has good reduction in the logarithmic setting, i.e. there exists a projective, log smooth model of $A$ over $\mathcal{O}_K$. This implies in particular the existence of a projective, regular model of $A$, generalizing a result of Künnemann. The proof combines a deep theorem of Gabber with the theory of degenerations of abelian varieties developed by Mumford, Faltings-Chai et al.
Motivated by a question of Hansen and Li, we show that a smooth and proper rigid analytic space $X$ with projective reduction satisfies Hodge symmetry in the following situations: (1) the base non-archimedean field $K$ is of residue characteristic zero, (2) $K$ is $p$-adic and $X$ has good ordinary reduction, (3) $K$ is $p$-adic and $X$ has "combinatorial reduction."' We also reprove a version of their result, Hodge symmetry for $H^1$, without the use of moduli spaces of semistable sheaves. All of this relies on cases of Kato's log hard Lefschetz conjecture, which we prove for $H^1$ and for lo…
We formulate a generalization of Vojta's conjecture in terms of log pairs and variants of multiplier ideals. In this generalization, a variety is allowed to have singularities. It turns out that the generalized conjecture for a log pair is equivalent to the original conjecture applied to a log resolution of the pair. A special case of the generalized conjecture can be interpreted as representing a general phenomenon that there tend to exist more rational points near singular points than near smooth points. The same phenomenon is also observed in relation between greatest common divisors of int…
We define an overconvergent version of the Hyodo-Kato complex for semistable varieties $Y$ over perfect fields of positive characteristic, and prove that its hypercohomology tensored with $\mathbb{Q}$ recovers the log-rigid cohomology when $Y$ is quasi-projective. We then describe the monodromy operator using the overconvergent Hyodo-Kato complex. Finally, we show that overconvergent Hyodo-Kato cohomology agrees with log-crystalline cohomology in the projective semistable case.
For moduli of polarized smooth K-trivial a.k.a., Calabi-Yau varieties in a general sense, we revisit a classical problem of constructing its "weak K-moduli" compactifications which parametrizes K-semistable (i.e., semi-log-canonical K-trivial) degenerations. Although weak K-moduli is not unique in general, they always contain a unique partial compactification (K-moduli). Our main theorem is the log minimality of their normalizations, under some conditions. Partially to confirm that known examples satisfy the conditions, we also include an appendix on the algebro-geometric reconstruction of Kul…
We apply inequalities from the theory of linear forms in logarithms to deduce effective results on S-integral points on certain higher-dimensional varieties when the cardinality of S is sufficiently small. These results may be viewed as a higher-dimensional version of an effective result of Bilu on integral points on curves. In particular, we prove a completely explicit result for integral points on certain affine subsets of the projective plane. As an application, we generalize an effective result of Vojta on the three-variable unit equation by giving an effective solution of the polynomial u…
