So far only a few families of smooth irregular surfaces are known to exist in P^4 up to pullbacks by suitable finite morphisms from P^4 onto P^4 itself.
In this paper we present two different constructions of irregular smooth minimal elliptic surfaces of degree 12 in P^4. The first is a monad construction while the other uses liaison. The family constructed via liaison includes the surfaces of the first family as a special case.
The aim of this paper is to present two different constructions of smooth rational surfaces in projective fourspace with degree 12 and sectional genus 13. In particular, we establish the existences of five different families of smooth rational surfaces in projective fourspace with the prescribed invariants.
The aim of this paper is to present a construction of smooth rational surfaces in projective fourspace with degree 12 and sectional genus 13. The construction is based on exterior algebra methods, finite field searches and standard deformation theory.
P. Ellia and G.Sacchiero have shown that if $S$ is a smooth surface in $\Pn 4$ which is ruled in conics, then $S$ has degree 4 or 5. In this paper we give a proof of this result combining the ideas of Ellia and Sacchiero as they are used in the paper of the second author on plane curve fibrations and the recent work of G. Fløystad and the first author bounding the degree of smooth surfaces in $\Pn 4$ not of general type.
The paper discusses the classification of surfaces of degree 10 and sectional genus 9 and 10. The surfaces of degree at most 9 are described through classical work dating from the last century up to recent years, while surfaces of degree 10 and other sectional genera are studied elsewhere. We use relations between multisecants, linear systems, syzygies and linkage to describe the geometry of each surface. We want in fact to stress the importance of multisecants and syzygies for the study of these surfaces. Adjunction, which provided efficient arguments for the classification of surfaces of sma…
We show that any hyperplane section of a variety which is the inverse image of a smooth variety of dimension at least 2 by an endomorphism (wich is not an automorphism) of the projective space, is linearly complete. We stress the case of smooth surfaces in projective fourspace.
We prove that the irregularity of a smooth abelian scroll whose dimension is at least half of that of the surrounding projective space is bounded by 2. In addition we discuss some existence results and open problems.
We prove that any smooth complex projective variety with generic vanishing index bigger or equal than 2 has birational bicanonical map. Therefore, if X is a smooth complex projective variety X with maximal Albanese dimension and non-birational bicanonical map, then the Albanese image of X is fibered by subvarieties of codimension at most 1 of an abelian subvariety of Alb X.
We prove that for a smooth projective irregular $3$-fold $X$ with $K_X\equiv 0$ and a nef and big divisor $L$ on $X$, $|mL+P|$ gives a birational map for all $m\geq 3$ and all $P\in \text{Pic}^0(X)$. We also use the same method to deal with $4$-folds, and prove that for a smooth projective irregular $4$-fold $X$ with $K_X\equiv 0$ and an ample divisor $L$ on $X$, $|mL+P|$ gives a birational map for all $m\geq 5$ and all $P\in \text{Pic}^0(X)$. These results are also optimal.
We prove a new inequality for the Hodge number h^1,1 of irregular complex smooth projective surfaces of general type without irregular pencils of genus >1. More specifically we show that if the irregularity q satisfies q=2^k+1 then h^1,1>4q-4.
We determine the base space of the Kuranishi family of some complete intersection in the product of an abelian variety and a projective space. As a consequence we obtain new examples of obstructed irregular surfaces with ample canonical bundle and maximal Albanese dimension.
One of the simplest examples of a smooth, non degenerate surface in P^4 is the quintic elliptic scroll. It can be constructed from an elliptic normal curve E by joining every point on E with the translation of this point by a non-zero 2-torsion point. The same construction can be applied when E is replaced by a (lineaerly normally embedded) abelian variety A. In this paper we ask the question when the resulting scroll Y is smooth. If A is an abelian surface embedded by a line bundle L of type (d_1,d_2) and r=d_1d_2, then we prove that for general A the scroll Y is smooth if r is at least 7 wit…
Let $X$ be a complex smooth projective threefold of general type. Assume $q(X)>0$. We show that the $m$-canonical map of $X$ is birational for all $m\geq 5$.
In the first part of the paper Beilinson's theorem on the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on P^n is extended to weighted projective spaces in a rather explicit form. To this purpose the usual category of coherent sheaves is replaced by a suitable category of graded sheaves, and a more general theory of graded schemes is developed. In the second part of the paper the weighted version of Beilinson's theorem is applied to prove a structure theorem for certain canonical projections of surfaces of general type into a 3-dimensional weighted projective space. This result (which generaliz…
Certain rigid irregular $G_2$-connections constructed by the first-named author are related via pullbacks along a finite covering and Fourier transform to rigid local systems on a punctured projective line. This kind of property was first observed by Katz for hypergeometric connections and used by Sabbah and Yu to compute irregular Hodge filtrations for hypergeometric connections. This strategy can also be applied to the aforementioned $G_2$-connections and we compute jumping indices and dimensions for their irregular Hodge filtrations.
In this paper we construct a coarse moduli scheme of stable unramified irregular singular parabolic connections on a smooth projective curve and prove that the constructed moduli space is smooth and has a symplectic structure. Moreover we will construct the moduli space of generalized monodromy data coming from topological monodromies, formal monodromies, links and Stokes data associated to the generic irregular connections. We will prove that for a generic choice of generalized local exponents, the generalized Riemann-Hilbert correspondence from the moduli space of the connections to the modu…
We give a complete description of the two-dimensional moduli spaces of stable Higgs bundles of rank 2 over complex projective line with one irregular singular point, having a regular leading-order term, and endowed with a generic compatible parabolic structure such that the parabolic degree of the Higgs bundle is 0. Our method relies on elliptic fibrations of the rational elliptic surface, an equivalence of categories between irregular Higgs bundles and some sheaves on a ruled surface, and an analysis of stability conditions.
We give an algebraic construction of the moduli space of irregular singular connections of generic ramified type on a smooth projective curve. We prove that the moduli space is smooth and give its dimension. Under the assumption that the exponent of ramified type is generic, we give an algebraic symplectic form on the moduli space.
Inspired by Beauville's recent construction of Ulrich sheaves on abelian surfaces, we pose the question of whether a torsion-free sheaf on a polarized smooth projective variety with Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity 1 is a GV (generic vanishing) sheaf, and present evidence that this question is governed by the positivity of cycles on generalized Brill-Noether loci. We prove that it has an affirmative answer for natural polarizations on many well-known irregular surfaces, as well as some polarizations on ruled threefolds over a curve.
Let S be a smooth minimal complex projective surface of maximal Albanese dimension. Under the assumption that the canonical class of S is ample and the irregularity of S, q(S), is greater or equal to 5 we show that K^2>= 4χ(S)+(10/3)q(S)-8, thus improving the well known Severi inequality K^2>=4χ(S). We also give stronger inequalities under extra assumptions on the Albanese map or on the canonical map of S.
For a projective variety X, a line bundle L on X and r a natural number we consider the r-th Brill-Noether locus W^r(L,X):={η\in Pic^0(X)|h^0(L+η)\geq r+1}: we describe its natural scheme structure and compute the Zariski tangent space. If X is a smooth surface of maximal Albanese dimension and C is a curve on X, we define a Brill-Noether number ρ(C, r) and we prove, under some mild additional assumptions, that if ρ(C, r) is non negative then W^r(C,X) is nonempty of dimension bigger or equal to ρ(C,r). As an application, we derive lower bounds for h^0(K_D) for a divisor D that moves linearly o…
We prove that any smooth complex projective variety $X$ with plurigenera $P_1(X)=P_2(X)=1$ and irregularity $q(X)=dim (X)$ is birational to an abelian variety.
The purpose of this paper is to show how the generic vanishing theorems of M. Green and the second author can be used to settle several questions and conjectures concerning the geometry of irregular complex projective varieties. First, we prove a conjecture of Arbarello and DeConcini characterizing principally polarized abelian varieties whose theta divisors are singular in codimension one. Secondly, we study the holomorphic Euler characteristics of varieties of general type having maximal Albanese dimension: we verify a conjecture of Kollar for subvarieties of abelian varieties, but show that…
In this paper we construct a connection on the trivial G-bundle on the projective line for any simple complex algebraic group G, which is regular outside of the points 0 and infinity, has a regular singularity at the point 0, with principal unipotent monodromy, and has an irregular singularity at the point infinity, with slope 1/h, the reciprocal of the Coxeter number of G. This connection, which admits the structure of an oper in the sense of Beilinson and Drinfeld, appears to be the characteristic 0 counterpart of a hypothetical family of l-adic representations, which should parametrize a sp…
We consider the quotient X of bi-elliptic surface by a finite automorphism group. If X is smooth, then it is a bi-elliptic surface or ruled surface with irregularity one. As a corollary any bi-elliptic surface cannot be Galois covering of projective plane, hence does not have any Galois embedding.
In this note, we construct nine families of projective complex minimal surfaces of general type having the canonical map of degree 8 and irregularity 0 or 1. For six of these families the canonical system has a non trivial fixed part.
The Deligne--Simpson problem is an existence problem for connections with specified local behavior. Almost all previous work on this problem has restricted attention to connections with regular or unramified singularities. Recently, the authors, together with Kulkarni and Matherne, formulated a version of the Deligne--Simpson problem where certain ramified singular points are allowed and solved it for the case of Coxeter connections, i.e., connections on the Riemann sphere with a maximally ramified singularity at zero and (possibly) an additional regular singular point at infinity. A certain m…
Let $C$ be a smooth projective curve and $G$ a finite subgroup of $\mathrm{Aut}(C)^2\rtimes \mathbb Z_2$ whose action is \textit{mixed}, i.e.~there are elements in $G$ exchanging the two isotrivial fibrations of $C\times C$. Let $G^0\triangleleft G$ be the index two subgroup $G\cap\mathrm{Aut}(C)^2$. If $G^0$ acts freely, then $X:=(C\times C)/G$ is smooth and we call it \textit{semi-isogenous mixed surface}. In this paper we give an algorithm to determine semi-isogenous mixed surfaces with given geometric genus, irregularity and self-intersection of the canonical class. As an application we cl…
We prove that smooth projective varieties with equivalent derived categories have isogenous (and sometimes isomorphic) Picard varieties. In particular their irregularity and number of independent vector fields are the same. This is turn implies, in combination with the invariance of Hochschild homology, that all Hodge numbers are the same for arbitrary derived equivalent threefolds.
For a smooth projective complex variety whose Albanese morphism is finite, we show that every Bridgeland stability condition on its bounded derived category of coherent sheaves is geometric, in the sense that all skyscraper sheaves are stable with the same phase. Furthermore, we describe the stability manifolds of irregular surfaces and abelian threefolds with Picard rank one, and show that they are connected and contractible.
We work out properties of smooth projective varieties over a (not necessarily algebraically closed) field that admit collections of objects in the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves that are either full exceptional, or numerically exceptional of maximal length. Our main result gives a necessary and sufficient condition on the Neron-Severi lattice for a smooth projective surface with holomorphic Euler characteristic 1 to admit a numerically exceptional collection of maximal length, consisting of line-bundles. As a consequence we determine exactly which complex surfaces with vanishing …
We use the Borisov-Keum equations of a fake projective plane and the Borisov-Yeung equations of the Cartwright-Steger surface to show the existence of a regular surface with canonical map of degree 36 and of an irregular surface with canonical map of degree 27. As a by-product, we get equations (over a finite field) for the $\mathbb Z/3$-invariant fibres of the Albanese fibration of the Cartwright-Steger surface and show that they are smooth.
Let V be a smooth quasi-projective complex surface such that the three first logarithmic plurigenera are equal to 1 and the logarithmic irregularity is equal to 2. We prove that the quasi-Albanese morphism of V is birational and there exists a finite set S such that the quasi-Albanese map is proper over the complement of S in the quasi-Albanese variety A(V) of V. This is a sharp effective version of a classical result of Iitaka.
Let $f \colon X \to A$ be a morphism from a smooth projective variety to an abelian variety (over the field of complex numbers). We show that the sheaves $f_* ω_X^{\otimes m}$ become globally generated after pullback by an isogeny. We use this to deduce a decomposition theorem for these sheaves when $m \ge 2$, analogous to that obtained by Chen-Jiang when $m = 1$. This is in turn applied to effective results for pluricanonical linear series on irregular varieties with canonical singularities.
Let $S$ be a minimal smooth projective surface of general type with irregularity $q=2$. We show that, if $S$ has a nontrivial holomorphic automorphism acting trivially on the cohomology with rational coefficients, then it is a surface isogenous to a product. As a consequence of this geometric characterization, one infers that no nontrivial automorphism of surfaces of general type with $q=2$ (which are not necessarily minimal) can be homotopic to the identity. In particular, such surfaces are rigidified in the sense of Fabrizio Catanese.
Esnault-Viehweg developed the theory of cyclic branched coverings $\tilde X\to X$ of smooth surfaces providing a very explicit formula for the decomposition of $H^1(\tilde X,\mathbb{C})$ in terms of a resolution of the ramification locus. Later, the first author applies this to the particular case of coverings of $\mathbb{P}^2$ reducing the problem to a combination of global and local conditions on projective curves. In this paper we extend the above results in three directions: first, the theory is extended to surfaces with quotient singularities, second the ramification locus can be partiall…
A determination of the fixed components, base points and irregularity is made for arbitrary numerically effective divisors on any smooth projective rational surface having an effective anticanonical divisor. All of the results are proven over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic. Applications, treated in separate papers, include questions involving: points in good position, birational models of rational surfaces in projective space, and resolutions for ideals of fat point subschemes of $P^2$.
Let X be a smooth projective surface of irregularity 0. The Hilbert scheme of n points on X parameterizes zero-dimensional subschemes of X of length n. In this paper, we discuss general methods for studying the cone of ample divisors on the Hilbert scheme. We then use these techniques to compute the cone of ample divisors on the Hilbert scheme for several surfaces where the cone was previously unknown. Our examples include families of surfaces of general type and del Pezzo surfaces of degree 1. The methods rely on Bridgeland stability and the Positivity Lemma of Bayer and Macri.
We study rank-one sheaves and stable pairs on a smooth projective complex surface. We obtain an embedding of the moduli space of limit stable pairs into a smooth space. The embedding induces a perfect obstruction theory, which, over a surface with irregularity 0, agrees with the usual deformation-obstruction theory. The perfect obstruction theory defines a virtual fundamental class on the moduli space. Using the embedding, we show that the virtual class equals the Euler class of a vector bundle on the smooth ambient space. As an application, we show that on $\mathbb{P}^2$, the expected count o…
A good canonical projection of a surface $S$ of general type is a morphism to the 3-dimensional projective space P^3 given by 4 sections of the canonical line bundle. To such a projection one associates the direct image sheaf F of the structure sheaf of S, which is shown to admit a certain length 1 symmetrical locally free resolution. The structure theorem gives necessary and sufficient conditions for such a length 1 locally free symmetrical resolution of a sheaf F on P^3 in order that $Spec (mathcal F)$ yield a canonically projected surface of general type. The result was found in 1983 by the…
Let $S$ be a complex smooth projective surface of Kodaira dimension one. We show that the group $\mathrm{Aut}_s(S)$ of symplectic automorphisms acts trivially on the Albanese kernel $\mathrm{CH}_0(S)_\mathrm{alb}$ of the $0$-th Chow group $\mathrm{CH}_0(S)$, unless possibly if the geometric genus and the irregularity satisfy $p_g(S)=q(S)\in\{1,2\}$. In the exceptional cases, the image of the homomorphism $\mathrm{Aut}_s(S)\rightarrow \mathrm{Aut}(\mathrm{CH}_0(S)_\mathrm{alb})$ has order at most 3. Our arguments actually take care of the group $\mathrm{Aut}_f(S)$ of fibration-preserving automo…
In this paper we investigate an arithmetic analogue of the gonality of a smooth projective curve $C$ over a number field $k$: the minimal $e$ such there are infinitely many points $P \in C(\bar{k})$ with $[k(P):k] \leq e$. Developing techniques that make use of an auxiliary smooth surface containing the curve, we show that this invariant can take any value subject to constraints imposed by the gonality. Building on work of Debarre--Klassen, we show that this invariant is equal to the gonality for all sufficiently ample curves on a surface $S$ with trivial irregularity.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective surface over the complex number field and let $L$ be a nef-big divisor on $X$. Here we consider the following conjecture; If the Kodaira dimension $κ(X)\geq 0$, then $K_{X}L\geq 2q(X)-4$, where $q(X)$ is the irregularity of $X$. In this paper, we prove that this conjecture is true if (1) the case in which $κ(X)=0$ or 1, (2) the case in which $κ(X)=2$ and $h^{0}(L)\geq 2$, or (3) the case in which $κ(X)=2$, $X$ is minimal, $h^{0}(L)=1$, and $L$ satisfies some conditions.
