The aim of this paper is to present a construction of smooth rational surfaces in projective fourspace with degree 12 and sectional genus 13. The construction is based on exterior algebra methods, finite field searches and standard deformation theory.
The aim of this paper is to present two different constructions of smooth rational surfaces in projective fourspace with degree 12 and sectional genus 13. In particular, we establish the existences of five different families of smooth rational surfaces in projective fourspace with the prescribed invariants.
So far only a few families of smooth irregular surfaces are known to exist in P^4 up to pullbacks by suitable finite morphisms from P^4 onto P^4 itself. In this paper we present two different constructions of irregular smooth minimal elliptic surfaces of degree 12 in P^4. The first is a monad construction while the other uses liaison. The family constructed via liaison includes the surfaces of the first family as a special case.
P. Ellia and G.Sacchiero have shown that if $S$ is a smooth surface in $\Pn 4$ which is ruled in conics, then $S$ has degree 4 or 5. In this paper we give a proof of this result combining the ideas of Ellia and Sacchiero as they are used in the paper of the second author on plane curve fibrations and the recent work of G. Fløystad and the first author bounding the degree of smooth surfaces in $\Pn 4$ not of general type.
The paper discusses the classification of surfaces of degree 10 and sectional genus 9 and 10. The surfaces of degree at most 9 are described through classical work dating from the last century up to recent years, while surfaces of degree 10 and other sectional genera are studied elsewhere. We use relations between multisecants, linear systems, syzygies and linkage to describe the geometry of each surface. We want in fact to stress the importance of multisecants and syzygies for the study of these surfaces. Adjunction, which provided efficient arguments for the classification of surfaces of sma…
We show that any hyperplane section of a variety which is the inverse image of a smooth variety of dimension at least 2 by an endomorphism (wich is not an automorphism) of the projective space, is linearly complete. We stress the case of smooth surfaces in projective fourspace.
Let $X$ be a smooth complex projective variety. A recent conjecture of S. Kovács states that if t\ he $p^{\text{th}}$-exterior power of the tangent bundle $T_X$ contains the $p^{\text{th}}$-exterior power of an ample vector bundle, then $X$ is either a projective space or a smooth quadric hypersurface. This conjecture is appealing since it is a common generalization of Mori's, Wahl's, Andreatt\ a-Wísniewski's, and Araujo-Druel-Kovács's characterizations of these spaces. In this paper I give a proof affirming this conjecture for varieties with Picard number 1.
We show that the total cohomology of the canonical bundle of a smooth projective variety, seen as a module over an exterior algebra, splits into a natural direct sum of submodules which are generated in degree zero and have a linear free resolution. This improves a previous result of the first two authors.
We construct an explicit equivalence between a category of complexes over the exterior algebra, which we call HT-complexes, and the stable category of vector bundles on the corresponding projective space, and establish a relation between HT-complexes and the Tate resolutions over the exterior algebra, which had been described by D. Eisenbud, G. Floystad, F.O. Schreyer in math.AG/0104203. The correspondence between HT-complexes and stable classes of vector bundles essentially translates into more fancy terms former results of Trautmann on representing Koszul complexes, which, in turn, were infl…
In this paper we derive an explicit version of the Bernstein-Gel'fand-Gel'fand (BGG) correspondence between bounded complexes of coherent sheaves on projective space and minimal doubly infinite free resolutions over its ``Koszul dual'' exterior algebra. This leads to an efficient method for machine computation of the cohomology of sheaves. Among the facts about the BGG correspondence that we derive is that taking homology of a complex of sheaves corresponds to taking the ``linear part'' of a resolution over the exterior algebra. Using these results we give a constructive proof of the existence…
The Witt ring of a complex flag variety describes the interesting -- i.e. torsion -- part of its topological KO-theory. We show that for a large class of flag varieties, these Witt rings are exterior algebras, and that the degrees of the generators can be determined by Dynkin diagram combinatorics. Besides full flag varieties, projective spaces, and other varieties whose Witt rings were previously known, this class contains many flag varieties of exceptional types. Complete results are obtained for flag varieties of types G2 and F4. The results also extend to flag varieties over other algebrai…
In this paper we study the Bernstein-Gel'fand-Gel'fand (BGG) correspondence linking sheaves on a projective space to graded modules over an exterior algebra. We give an explicit construction of a Beilinson monad for a sheaf on projective space. The explicitness allows us to to prove two conjectures about the morphisms in the monad. We also construct all the monads for a sheaf that can be built from sums of line bundles. A large subclass, containing many monads introduced by others, are uniquely characterized by simple numerical data. Our methods also yield an efficient method for machine compu…
In this paper, we study smooth complex projective varieties $X$ such that some exterior power $\bigwedge^r T_X$ of the tangent bundle is strictly nef. We prove that such varieties are rationally connected. We also classify the following two cases. If $T_X$ is strictly nef, then $X$ isomorphic to the projective space $\mathrm{P}^n$. If $\bigwedge^2 T_X$ is strictly nef and if $X$ has dimension at least $3$, then $X$ is either isomorphic to $\mathrm{P}^n$ or a quadric $\mathrm{Q}^n$.
Let $X$ be a smooth complex projective variety with nef $\bigwedge^2 T_X$ and $\dim X \geq 3$. We prove that, up to a finite étale cover $\tilde{X} \to X$, the Albanese map $\tilde{X} \to {\rm Alb}(\tilde{X})$ is a locally trivial fibration whose fibers are isomorphic to a smooth Fano variety $F$ with nef $\bigwedge^2 T_F$. As a bi-product, we see that either $T_X$ is nef or $X$ is a Fano variety. Moreover we study a contraction of a $K_X$-negative extremal ray $φ: X \to Y$. In particular, we prove that $X$ is isomorphic to the blow-up of a projective space at a point if $φ$ is of birational t…
Complex contact manifolds arise naturally in differential geometry, algebraic geometry and exterior differential systems. Their classification would answer an important question about holonomy groups. The geometry of such manifold $X$ is governed by the contact lines contained in $X$. These are related to the notion of a variety of minimal rational tangents. In this review we discuss the partial classification theorems of projective complex contact manifolds. Among such manifolds one finds contact Fano manifolds (which include adjoint varieties) and projectivised cotangent bundles. In the firs…
For a Lie-Rinehart algebra (A,L) such that, as an A-module, L is finitely generated and projective of finite constant rank, the relationship between generators of the Gerstenhaber bracket and connections on the highest A-exterior power of L given in an earlier paper arises from the canonical pairing between the exterior A-powers of L. Thus, given an exact generator for the corresponding Gerstenhaber algebra, the chain complex underlying the resulting Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra coincides with the Rinehart complex computing the corresponding Lie-Rinehart homology.
Parametric Cartan theory of exterior differential systems, and explicit cohomology of projective manifolds reveal united rationality features of differential algebraic geometry.
We are going to show that the sheafication of graded Koszul modules $% K_Γ$ over $Γ_{n}=K[ x_{0},x_{1}...x_{n}] $ form an important subcategory $\overset{\wedge}{K}_Γ$ of the coherents sheaves on projective space, $Coh(P^{n}).$ One reason is that any coherent sheave over $P^{n}$ belongs to $\overset{\wedge}{K}_Γ$up to shift. More importantly, the category $K_Γ$ allows a concept of almost split sequence obtained by exploiting Koszul duality between graded Koszul modules over $Γ$ and over the exterior algebra $Λ.$ This is then used to develop a kind of relative Auslander-Reiten theory for the ca…
In arXiv:1901.02990v1 the equivariant quantum differential equation ($qDE$) for a projective space was considered and a compatible system of difference $qKZ$ equations was introduced; the space of solutions to the joint system of the $qDE$ and $qKZ$ equations was identified with the space of the equivariant $K$-theory algebra of the projective space; Stokes bases in the space of solutions were identified with exceptional bases in the equivariant $K$-theory algebra. This paper is a continuation of arXiv:1901.02990v1. We describe the relation between solutions to the joint system of the $qDE$ an…
