In this paper we derive an explicit version of the Bernstein-Gel'fand-Gel'fand (BGG) correspondence between bounded complexes of coherent sheaves on projective space and minimal doubly infinite free resolutions over its ``Koszul dual'' exterior algebra. This leads to an efficient method for machine computation of the cohomology of sheaves. Among the facts about the BGG correspondence that we derive is that taking homology of a complex of sheaves corresponds to taking the ``linear part'' of a resolution over the exterior algebra.
Using these results we give a constructive proof of the existence of a Beilinson monad for a sheaf on projective space. The explicitness of our version allows us to to prove two conjectures about the morphisms in the monad.
Along the way we prove a number of results about minimal free resolutions over an exterior algebra. For example, we show that such resolutions are eventually dominated by their "linear parts" in the sense that erasing all terms of degree $>1$ in the complex yields a new complex which is eventually exact.
In this paper we study the Bernstein-Gel'fand-Gel'fand (BGG) correspondence linking sheaves on a projective space to graded modules over an exterior algebra. We give an explicit construction of a Beilinson monad for a sheaf on projective space. The explicitness allows us to to prove two conjectures about the morphisms in the monad. We also construct all the monads for a sheaf that can be built from sums of line bundles. A large subclass, containing many monads introduced by others, are uniquely characterized by simple numerical data. Our methods also yield an efficient method for machine compu…
Given a sheaf on a projective space P^n we define a sequence of canonical and easily computable Chow complexes on the Grassmannians of planes in P^n, generalizing the Beilinson monad on P^n. If the sheaf has dimension k, then the Chow form of the associated k-cycle is the determinant of the Chow complex on the Grassmannian of planes of codimension k+1. Using the theory of vector bundles and the canonical nature of the complexes we are able to give explicit determinantal and Pfaffian formulas for resultants in some cases where no polynomial formulas were known. For example, the Horrocks-Mumford…
The graded coherent sheaf $α_X^\bullet$ constructed in [B.18] for any reduced pure dimensional complex space $X$ is stable by exterior product but not by the de Rham differential. We construct here a new graded coherent sheaf $α_X^\bullet$ containing $α_X^\bullet$ and stable both by exterior product and by the de Rham differential. We show that it has again the ``pull-back property'' for holomorphic maps $f : X \to Y$ between irreducible complex spaces such that $f(X)$ is not contained in the singular set of $Y$. Moreover, this graded coherent sheaf $α_X^\bullet$ comes with a natural coherent …
If r\geq 6, r\neq 9, we show that the Minimal Resolution Conjecture fails for a general set of m points in P^r for almost 1/2\sqrt r values of m. This strengthens the result of Eisenbud and Popescu [1999], who found a unique such m for each r in the given range. Our proof begins like a variation of that of Eisenbud and Popescu, but uses exterior algebra methods as explained by Eisenbud and Schreyer [2000] to avoid the degeneration arguments that were the most difficult part of the Eisenbud-Popescu proof. Analogous techniques show that the Minimal Resolution Conjecture fails for linearly normal…
We obtain a global resolution for the sheaf of differential operators on smooth geometric quotients of free linear actions of algebraic groups. The terms of our resolution involve symmetric and alternating powers of vector bundles easily constructed geometrically from the algebraic group and the vector space on which it acts.
We use the theory of twisted resolutions and twisted complexes to give a proof of Kontsevich's claim that Yoneda product corresponds to cup product in a canonical isomorphism from the Ext groups of the product space with coefficients in the diagonal sheaf to the cohomology with coefficients in exterior powers of the tangent sheaf.
We show how to induce products in sheaf cohomology for a wide variety of coefficients: sheaves of dg commutative and Lie algebras, symmetric Omega-spectra, filtered dg algebras, operads and operad algebras.
For the exterior algebra E over a vector space, we consider general maps E^a -> E(1)^b and general symmetric and skew-symmetric maps E^a -> E(1)^a and describe the associated exterior algebra resolutions. Using the theory of homogeneous bundles on homogeneous varieties we also describe the exterior algebra resolutions of much wider classes of maps E^a -> E(r)^b.
The Godement cosimplicial resolution is available for a wide range of categories of sheaves. In this paper we investigate under which conditions of the Grothendieck site and the category of coefficients it can be used to obtain fibrant models and hence to do sheaf homotopy theory. For instance, for which Grothendieck sites and coefficients we can define sheaf cohomology and derived functors through it.
The main problem studied is resolution of singularities of the cotangent sheaf of a complex- or real-analytic variety Y (or of an algebraic variety Y over a field of characteristic zero). Given Y, we ask whether there is a global resolution of singularities s: X -> Y such that the pulled-back cotangent sheaf of Y is generated by differential monomials in suitable coordinates at every point of X ("Hsiang-Pati coordinates''). Desingularization of the cotangent sheaf is equivalent to monomialization of Fitting ideals generated by minors of a given order of the logarithmic Jacobian matrix of s. We…
In this paper, we introduce a coherent subsheaf of Saito's $S$-sheaf, which is a combination of the $S$-sheaf and the multiplier ideal sheaf. We construct its $L^2$-Dolbeault resolution, which generalizes MacPherson's conjecture on the $L^2$ resolution of the Grauert-Riemenschneider sheaf. We also prove various vanishing theorems for the $S$-sheaf (Saito's vanishing theorem, Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem and some new ones like Nadel vanishing theorem) transcendentally. Finally, we discuss some applications of our results on the relative version of Fujita's conjecture (e.g. Kawamata's conj…
Let $G$ be a group scheme of finite type over a field, and consider the cohomology ring $H^*(G)$ with coefficients in the structure sheaf. We show that $H^*(G)$ is a free module of finite rank over its component of degree 0, and is the exterior algebra of its component of degree 1. When $G$ is connected, we determine the Hopf algebra structure of $H^*(G)$.
A reduced divisor on a nonsingular variety defines the sheaf of logarithmic 1-forms. We introduce a certain coherent sheaf whose double dual coincides with this sheaf. It has some nice properties, for example, the residue exact sequence still holds even when the divisor is singular, and also it has a simple locally free resolution. We specialize to the case when the divisor is an arrangement of hyperplanes in projective space, and relate the properties of stability of the sheaf with the combinatorics of the arrangement. We also extend a Torelli type theorem to non generic arrangements which al…
We prove that on separated algebraic surfaces every coherent sheaf is a quotient of a locally free sheaf. This class contains many schemes that are neither normal, reduced, quasiprojective or embeddable into toric varieties. Our methods extend to arbitrary $2$-dimensional schemes that are proper over a noetherian ring.
We describe the Tate resolution of a coherent sheaf or complex of coherent sheaves on a product of projective spaces. Such a resolution makes explicit all the cohomology of all twists of the sheaf, including, for example, the multigraded module of twisted global sections, and also the Beilinson monads of all twists. Although the Tate resolution is highly infinite, any finite number of components can be computed efficiently, starting either from a Beilinson monad or from a multigraded module.
We show that if X is the complement of a complex hyperplane arrangement, then the homology of X has linear free resolution as a module over the exterior algebra on the first cohomology of X. We study invariants of X that can be deduced from this resolution. A key ingredient is a result of Aramova, Avramov, and Herzog [2000] on resolutions of monomial ideals in the exterior algebra. We give a new conceptual proof of this result.
We provide a locally free resolution of the projectivized symmetric algebra of the ideal sheaf of a zero-dimensional scheme defined by n + 1 equations in an n-dimensional variety. The resolution is given in terms of the resolution of the ideal itself and of the Eagon-Northcott complex of the Koszul hull.
We prove three results on pure resolutions of vector bundles on projective spaces. First, we show that there are simple vector bundles of rank n on Pn with arbitrary homological dimension. We then analyze the pure resolutions given by the sheafification of the Koszul complex of a certain algebra and by the sheafification of the minimal free resolution of a compressed Gorenstein Artinian graded algebra, proving that their syzygies are simple vector bundles. Our main tool is a result originally established by Brambilla, for which we give an alternative proof using representations of quivers.
A generalization of the usual ideles group is proposed, namely, we construct certain adelic complexes for sheaves of $K$-groups on schemes. More generally, such complexes are defined for any abelian sheaf on a scheme. We focus on the case when the sheaf is associated to the presheaf of a homology theory with certain natural axioms, satisfied by $K$-theory. In this case it is proven that the adelic complex provides a flasque resolution for the above sheaf and that the natural morphism to the Gersten complex is a quasiisomorphism. The main advantage of the new adelic resolution is that it is con…
In most cases where it had been shown to exist the derived McKay correspondence D(Y) --> D^G(C^n) can be written as a Fourier-Mukai transform which sends point sheaves of the crepant resolution Y to pure sheaves in D^G(C^n). We give a sufficient condition for an object of D^G(Y x C^n) to be the defining object of such a transform. We use it to construct the first example of the derived McKay correspondence for a non-projective crepant resolution of C^3/G. Along the way we extract some more geometric sense out of the Intersection Theorem and learn to explicitly compute theta-stable families of …
In this paper we study the incidence complex of an arbitrary morphism of locally free sheaves relative to an arbitrary quasi compact morphism of schemes. We prove it is a local complete intersection in the case when the sheaf morphism is surjective. We construct a complex - the incidence complex - which is a candidate for a resolution of the ideal sheaf of the incidence scheme. When the initial scheme is Cohen-Macaulay we prove the incidence complex is a resolution. We also study the rational points of the incidence scheme and discriminant scheme of any linear system on the projective line ove…
Let $A$ be a local noetherian ring and $N$ be a locally sheaf on the projective space $P^3_A$ : one proves easily that there exists a family $C$ of (smooth connected) curves contained in $P^3_A$, flat over $A$, and an integer $h$ such that the ideal sheaf $J$ of $C$ has a resolution $0\to P\to N\to J\to 0$ where $P$ is a direct sum of invertible sheaves $O_P(-n_i)$. In this paper we determine, for a given sheaf $N$, all the families of curves with such a resolution, especially the minimal ones (corresponding to the minimum value of $h$). It gives a description of the biliaison class related to…
A locally free resolution of a subscheme is by definition an exact sequence consisting of locally free sheaves (except the ideal sheaf) which has uniqueness properties like a free resolution. The purpose of this paper is to characterize certain locally Cohen-Macaulay subschemes by means of locally free resolutions. First we achieve this for arithmetically Buchsbaum subschemes. This leads to the notion of an $Ω$-resolution and extends a result of Chang. Second we characterize quasi-Buchsbaum subschemes by means of weak $Ω$-resolutions. Finally, we describe the weak $Ω$-resolutions which belong …
We study the cohomology theory of sheaf complexes for open embeddings of topological spaces and related subjects. The theory is situated in the intersection of the general Cech theory and the theory of derived categories. That is to say, on the one hand the cohomology is described as the relative cohomology of the sections of the sheaf complex, which appears naturally in the theory of Cech cohomology of sheaf complexes. On the other hand it is interpreted as the cohomology of a complex dual to the mapping cone of a certain morphism of complexes in the theory of derived categories. We prove a "…
We establish an equivalence between the stable category of coherent sheaves (satisfying a mild restriction) on a projective space and the homotopy category of a certain class of minimal complexes of free modules over the exterior algebra Koszul dual to the homogeneous coordinate algebra of the projective space. We also relate these complexes to the Tate resolutions of the respective sheaves. In this way, we extend from vector bundles to coherent sheaves the results of Coandă and Trautmann [Trans. AMS 385 (2005)], which interpret in terms of the BGG correspondence the results of Trautmann [Math…
We show an effective method to compute the Łojasiewicz exponent of an arbitrary sheaf of ideals of $\OO_X$, where $X$ is a non-singular scheme. This method is based on the algorithm of resolution of singularities.
The Grothendieck-Ogg-Shafarevich formula calculates the l-adic Euler-Poincare number of an l-adic sheaf on a curve by an invariant produced by the wild ramification of the l-adic sheaf named Swan class. A. Abbes, K. Kato and T. Saito generalize this formula to any dimensional scheme. In this paper, assuming the strong resolution of singularities we prove a localized version of a formula proved by A. Abbes and T. Saito using the characteristic class of an l-adic sheaf. As an application, we prove a conductor formula in equal characteristic.
Admissible pairs $((\widetilde S, \widetilde L), \widetilde E)$ consisting of an $N$-dimensional projective scheme~$\widetilde S$ of certain class with a special ample invertible sheaf $\widetilde L$ and a locally free ${\cal O}_{\widetilde S}$-sheaf $\widetilde E$ are considered. An admissible pair can be produced in the procedure of a transformation (which is called a resolution) of a torsion-free coherent sheaf $E$ on a nonsingular $N$-dimensional projective algebraic variety $S$ to a locally free sheaf $\widetilde E$ on some projective scheme $\widetilde S$. Notions of stability and semist…
We construct an explicit equivalence between a category of complexes over the exterior algebra, which we call HT-complexes, and the stable category of vector bundles on the corresponding projective space, and establish a relation between HT-complexes and the Tate resolutions over the exterior algebra, which had been described by D. Eisenbud, G. Floystad, F.O. Schreyer in math.AG/0104203. The correspondence between HT-complexes and stable classes of vector bundles essentially translates into more fancy terms former results of Trautmann on representing Koszul complexes, which, in turn, were infl…
The Dolbeault resolution of the sheaf of holomorphic vector fields $Lie$ on a complex manifold $M$ relates $Lie$ to a sheaf of differential graded Lie algebras, known as the Frölicher-Nijenhuis algebra $g$. We establish - following B. L. Feigin - an isomorphism between the differential graded cohomology of the space of global sections of $g$ and the hypercohomology of the sheaf of continuous cochain complexes of $Lie$. We calculate this cohomology up to the singular cohomology of some mapping space. We use and generalize results of N. Kawazumi on complex Gelfand-Fuks cohomology. Applications a…
Via the BGG-correspondence a simplicial complex D on [n] is transformed into a complex of coherent sheaves L(D) on the projective space n-1-space. In general we compute the support of each of its cohomology sheaves. When the Alexander dual D* is Cohen-Macaulay there is only one such non-zero cohomology sheaf. We investigate when this sheaf can be an a'th syzygy sheaf in a locally free resolution and show that this corresponds exactly to the case of D* being a+1-Cohen-Macaulay as defined by K.Baclawski. By putting further conditions on the sheaves we get nice subclasses of a+1- Cohen-Macaulay s…
A good canonical projection of a surface $S$ of general type is a morphism to the 3-dimensional projective space P^3 given by 4 sections of the canonical line bundle. To such a projection one associates the direct image sheaf F of the structure sheaf of S, which is shown to admit a certain length 1 symmetrical locally free resolution. The structure theorem gives necessary and sufficient conditions for such a length 1 locally free symmetrical resolution of a sheaf F on P^3 in order that $Spec (mathcal F)$ yield a canonically projected surface of general type. The result was found in 1983 by the…
The classical HKR-theorem gives an isomorphism of the n-th Hochschild cohomology of a smooth algebra and the n-th exterior power of its module of Kähler differentials. Here we generalize it for simplicial, graded and anticommutative objects in ``good pairs of categories''. We apply this generalization to complex spaces and noetherian schemes and deduce two decomposition theorems for their (relative) Hochschild cohomology (special cases of those were recently shown by Buchweitz-Flenner and Yekutieli). The first one shows that Hochschild cohomology contains tangent cohomology: $\HH^n(X/Y,\sM)=\c…
We use the Thom-Whitney construction to show that infinitesimal deformations of a coherent sheaf F are controlled by the differential graded Lie algebra of global sections of an acyclic resolution of the sheaf End(E), where E is any locally free resolution of F. In particular, one recovers the well known fact that the tangent space to deformations of F is Ext^1(F,F), and obstructions are contained in Ext^2(F,F). The main tool is the identification of the deformation functor associated with the Thom-Whitney DGLA of a semicosimplicial DGLA whose cohomology is concentrated in nonnegative degrees …
The method of intersection spaces associates rational Poincaré complexes to singular stratified spaces. For a conifold transition, the resulting cohomology theory yields the correct count of all present massless 3-branes in type IIB string theory, while intersection cohomology yields the correct count of massless 2-branes in type IIA theory. For complex projective hypersurfaces with an isolated singularity, we show that the cohomology of intersection spaces is the hypercohomology of a perverse sheaf, the intersection space complex, on the hypersurface. Moreover, the intersection space complex …
In this paper we construct an explicit representative for the Grothendieck fundamental class [Z] of a complex submanifold Z of a complex manifold X, under the assumption that Z is the zero locus of a real analytic section of a holomorphic vector bundle E. To this data we associate a super-connection A on the exterior algebra of E, which gives a "twisted resolution" of the structure sheaf of Z. The "generalized super-trace" of A^{2r}/r!, where r is the rank of E, is an explicit map of complexes from the twisted resolution to the Dolbeault complex of X, which represents [Z]. One may then read of…
The higher direct image complex of a coherent sheaf (or finite complex of coherent sheaves) under a projective morphism is a fundamental construction that can be defined via a Cech complex or an injective resolution, both inherently infinite constructions. Using exterior algebras and relative versions of theorems of Beilinson and Bernstein-Gel'fand-Gel'fand, we give an alternate description in finite terms. Using this description we can characterize the generic complex, over the variety of finite free complexes of a given shape, as the direct image of an easily-described vector bundle. We can …
We are going to show that the sheafication of graded Koszul modules $% K_Γ$ over $Γ_{n}=K[ x_{0},x_{1}...x_{n}] $ form an important subcategory $\overset{\wedge}{K}_Γ$ of the coherents sheaves on projective space, $Coh(P^{n}).$ One reason is that any coherent sheave over $P^{n}$ belongs to $\overset{\wedge}{K}_Γ$up to shift. More importantly, the category $K_Γ$ allows a concept of almost split sequence obtained by exploiting Koszul duality between graded Koszul modules over $Γ$ and over the exterior algebra $Λ.$ This is then used to develop a kind of relative Auslander-Reiten theory for the ca…
Let \sF be a coherent rank 2 sheaf on a scheme Y \subset \proj{n} of dimension at least two. In this paper we study the relationship between the functor which deforms a pair (\sF,σ), σ\in H^0(\sF), and the functor which deforms the corresponding pair (X,ξ) given as in the Serre correspondence. We prove that the scheme structure of e.g. the moduli scheme M_Y(P) of stable sheaves on a threefold Y at (\sF), and the scheme structure at (X) of the Hilbert scheme of curves on Y are closely related. Using this relationship we get criteria for the dimension and smoothness of M_Y(P) at (\sF), without a…
We compute the cone of effective divisors on any moduli space of semistable sheaves on the plane. The computation hinges on finding a good resolution of a general stable sheaf. This resolution is determined by Bridgeland stability and arises from a well-chosen Beilinson spectral sequence. The existence of a good choice of spectral sequence depends on remarkable number-theoretic properties of the slopes of exceptional bundles.
We construct a generalization of the Dolbeault-Grothendieck resolution on a singular complex space. The same construction yields, for each morphism of analytic spaces, a pullback mapping between the respective Dolbeault-Grothendieck resolutions. As in the smooth case, the terms of the resolution are soft sheaves with stalks which are flat with respect to the sheaf of holomorphic sections. If, moreover, the complex space $(X,\mathcal{O}_{X})$ is countable at infinity then the global section spaces of the terms of the resolution are endowed with natural Fréchet-Schwarz topologies which induce th…
This paper studies several notions of sheaves of differential forms that are better behaved on singular varieties than Kähler differentials. Our main focus lies on varieties that are defined over fields of positive characteristic. We identify two promising notions: the sheafification with respect to the cdh-topology, and right Kan extension from the subcategory of smooth varieties to the category of all varieties. Our main results are that both are cdh-sheaves and agree with Kähler differentials on smooth varieties. They agree on all varieties under weak resolution of singularities. A number o…
We introduce some new algebraic structures arising naturally in the geometry of Calabi-Yau manifolds and mirror symmetry. We give a universal construction of Calabi-Yau algebras in terms of a noncommutative symplectic DG algebra resolution. In dimension 3, the resolution is determined by a noncommutative potential. Representation varieties of the Calabi-Yau algebra are intimately related to the set of critical points, and to the sheaf of vanishing cycles of the potential. Numerical invariants, like ranks of cyclic homology groups, are expected to be given by `matrix integrals' over representat…
Embedded principalization of ideals in smooth schemes, also known as Log-resolutions of ideals, play a central role in algebraic geometry. If two sheaves of ideals, say $I_1$ and $I_2$, over a smooth scheme $V$ have the same integral closure, it is well known that Log-resolution of one of them induces a Log-resolution of the other. On the other hand, in case $V$ is smooth over a field of characteristic zero, an algorithm of desingularization provides, for each sheaf of ideals, a unique Log-resolution. In this paper we show that algorithms of desingularization define the same Log-resolution for…
Let $X$ be a Hermitian complex space of pure dimension $n$ with isolated singularities. In the present paper, we give a natural resolution for the canonical sheaf of square-integrable holomorphic $n$-forms with Dirichlet boundary condition on $X$. As application, we obtain an explicit smooth model for the $L^2$-$\bar{\partial}$-cohomology, including natural resolutions for sheaves of $\bar{\partial}$-closed (holomorphic) $L^2$-functions.
We give a construction of NC-smooth thickenings (a notion defined by Kapranov in math/9802041) of a smooth variety equipped with a torsion free connection. We show that a twisted version of this construction realizes all NC-smooth thickenings as 0th cohomology of a differential graded sheaf of algebras, similarly to Fedosov's construction in \cite{Fed}. We use this dg resolution to construct and study sheaves on NC-smooth thickenings. In particular, we construct an NC version of the Fourier-Mukai transform from coherent sheaves on a (commutative) curve to perfect complexes on the canonical NC-…
By defining a fat point subscheme of $P^2$ to be a 0-dimensional subscheme defined by a sheaf of integrally closed ideals one extends the notion of fat point subschemes to allow infinitely near points. With this notion of fat points, this preprint determines the number of generators in each degree in a minimal homogeneous set of generators for the homogeneous ideal defining any fat point subscheme supported at points of any plane conic, smooth or not. Special cases for points on a cubic are also studied. All work is over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic.
We give a description of certain categories of equivariant coherent sheaves on Grothendieck's resolution in terms of the categorical affine Hecke algebra of Soergel. As an application, we deduce a relationship of these coherent sheaf categories to the categories of perverse sheaves considered in the work of Bezrukavnikov-Yun, generalizing results of Arkhipov-Bezrukavnikov. In addition, we deduce that the weak braid group action on sheaves of Riche and Bezrukavnikov-Riche can be upgraded to a strict braid group action.
