In this note, we construct nine families of projective complex minimal surfaces of general type having the canonical map of degree 8 and irregularity 0 or 1. For six of these families the canonical system has a non trivial fixed part.
In this note we construct an unlimited family of irregular algebraic surfaces of general type with canonical map of degree $ 8 $, irregularity $ 1 $ and arbitrarily large geometric genus such that the image of the canonical map is not a surface of minimal degree.
In this paper we prove that a smooth family of canonically polarized manifolds parametrized by a special (in the sense of Campana) quasi-projective variety is isotrivial.
In this article we establish a version of Y. Miyaoka generic semi-positivity theorem in the context of log-canonical orbifold pairs. As an application, we show that the canonical bundle associated to a lc pair is big as soon as there exists a generically injective morphism from an ample line bundle to some symmetric power of the cotangent bundle associated to the orbifold pair.
We show that the number of deformation types of canonically polarized manifolds over an arbitrary variety with proper singular locus is finite, and that this number is uniformly bounded in any finite type family of base varieties. As a corollary we show that a direct generalization of the geometric version of Shafarevich's original conjecture holds for infinitesimally rigid families of canonically polarized varieties.
Shafarevich's hyperbolicity conjecture asserts that a family of curves over a quasi-projective 1-dimensional base is isotrivial unless the logarithmic Kodaira dimension of the base is positive. More generally it has been conjectured by Viehweg that the base of a smooth family of canonically polarized varieties is of log general type if the family is of maximal variation. In this paper, we relate the variation of a family to the logarithmic Kodaira dimension of the base and give an affirmative answer to Viehweg's conjecture for families parametrized by surfaces.
In this note, we construct three new infinite families of surfaces of general type with canonical map of degree 2 onto a surface of general type. For one of these families the canonical system has base points.
Given an effectively parameterized family of canonically polarized manifolds the Kaehler-Einstein metrics on the fibers induce a hermitian metric on the relative canonical bundle. We use a global elliptic equation to show that this metric is strictly positive. For degenerating families we obtain a singular hermitian metric. Main application is an analytic proof of the quasi-projectivity of the moduli space of canonically polarized manifolds. Further applications in arXiv:1002.4858v2.
We establish the canonical class inequality for families of higher dimensional projective manifolds. As an application, we get a new inequality between the Chern numbers of 3-folds with smooth families of minimal surfaces of general type over a curve, $c_1^3<18c_3$.
We construct families of quartic and cubic hypersurfaces through a canonical curve, which are parametrized by an open subset in a Grassmannian and a Flag variety respectively. Using G. Kempf's cohomological obstruction theory, we show that these families cut out the canonical curve and that the quartics are birational (via a blowing-up of a linear subspace) to quadric bundles over the projective plane, whose Steinerian curve equals the canonical curve.
Suppose X is a smooth projective 3-fold of general type and |mK_X| is composed of a pencil of surfaces with m>1. This pencil naturally induces a fibration f:X->C onto a smooth curve C after the Stein-factorization, which is the main objects of this article. Based on Koll'ar's earlier works, we improve on it and try to understand the family in terms of discrete birational invariants of the total space as well as those of the general fiber and the base curve. The aim of this note is to build a little bit basic facts.
We prove that the base space of a log smooth family of log canonical pairs of log general type is of log general type as well as algebraically degenerate, when the family admits a relative good minimal model over a Zariski open subset of the base and the relative log canonical model is of maximal variation.
This article is a generalisation of results of Ciliberto and Sernesi. For a general canonically embedded curve $C$ of genus $g\geq 5$, let $d\le g-1$ be an integer such that the Brill--Noether number $ρ(g,d,1)=g-2(g-d+1)\geq 1$. We study the family of $d$-secant $\mathbb{P}^{d-2}$'s to $C$ induced by the smooth locus of the Brill--Noether locus $W^1_d(C)$. Using the theory of foci and a structure theorem for the rank one locus of special $1$-generic matrices by Eisenbud and Harris, we prove a Torelli-type theorem for general curves by reconstructing the curve from its Brill--Noether loci $W^1_…
We construct some new deformation families of four-dimensional Fano manifolds of index $1$ in some known classes of Gorenstein formats. These families have explicit descriptions in terms of equations, defining their image under the anti-canonical embedding in some weighted projective space. The constructed families have relatively smaller anti-canonical degrees than most other known families of smooth Fano 4-folds.
We show that the canonical-lift construction for ordinary elliptic curves over perfect fields of characteristic $p>0$ extends uniquely to arbitrary families of ordinary elliptic curves, even over $p$-adic formal schemes. In particular, the universal ordinary elliptic curve has a canonical lift. The existence statement is largely a formal consequence of the universal property of Witt vectors applied to the moduli space of ordinary elliptic curves, at least with enough level structure. As an application, we show how this point of view allows for more formal proofs of recent results of Finotti an…
Given an elliptic curve E over a function field K=Q(T_1,...,T_n), we study the behavior of the canonical height ^h_(E_w) of the specialized elliptic curve E_w with respect to the height of w in Q^n. In this paper, we prove that there exists a uniform non-zero lower bound for the average of the quotient ^h_(E_w)(P_w)/h(w) for all non-torsion P in E(K).
The main result of this note is an effective uniform bound for the number of deformation types of certain nonisotrivial families of canonically polarized manifolds. It extends the author's earlier such bound for the classical Shafarevich Conjecture over function fields to the case of higher dimensional fibers, but without the disadvantageous iterated use of Chow or Hilbert varieties that was the core of the proofs in the earlier approaches.
In this paper we classify completely all regular minimal surfaces with K^2=8, p_g=4 whose canonical map is composed with an involution. We obtain six unirational families of respective dimensions 28,28,32,33,38,34. The last two are irreducible components of the moduli space of minimal surfaces with K^2=8, p_g=4. These families hit three different topological types.
Given a polarized family of varieties over the unit disc, smooth except over the origin and with smooth fibers Calabi-Yau, we show that the origin lies at finite Weil-Petersson distance if and only if after a finite base change the family is birational to one with central fiber a Calabi-Yau variety with at worst canonical singularities, answering a question of C.-L. Wang. This condition also implies that the Ricci-flat Kahler metrics in the polarization class on the smooth fibers have uniformly bounded diameter, or are uniformly volume non-collapsed.
We prove that the mirror map is trivial for the canonical formal families of Calabi-Yau varieties constructed by Gross and the second author. In other words, the natural coordinate in a canonical Calabi-Yau family is a canonical coordinate in the sense of Hodge theory. This implies that the higher weight periods directly carry enumerative information with no further gauging necessary as opposed to the classical case. A side result is that the canonical formal families lift to analytic families. We compute the relevant period integrals explicitly. The cycles to integrate over are constructed fr…
We construct algebraic families of exotic affine 3-spheres, that is, smooth affine threefolds diffeomorphic to a non-degenerate smooth complex affine quadric of dimension 3 but non algebraically isomorphic to it. We show in particular that for every smooth topologically contractible affine surface S with trivial automorphism group, there exists a canonical smooth family of pairwise non isomorphic exotic affine 3-spheres parametrized by the closed points of S.
In this article we classify quadruple Galois canonical covers of smooth surfaces of minimal degree. The classification shows that they are either non-simple cyclic covers or bi-double covers. If they are bi-double then they are all fiber products of double covers. We construct examples to show that all the possibilities in the classification do exist. There are implications of this classification that include the existence of families with unbounded geometric genus and families with unbounded irregularity, in sharp contrast with the case of double and triple canonical covers. Together with the…
We show that a large class of maximally degenerating families of n-dimensional polarized varieties come with a canonical basis of sections of powers of the ample line bundle. The families considered are obtained by smoothing a reducible union of toric varieties governed by a wall structure on a real n-(pseudo-)manifold. Wall structures have previously been constructed inductively for cases with locally rigid singularities and by Gromov-Witten theory for mirrors of log Calabi-Yau surfaces and K3 surfaces by various combinations of the authors. For trivial wall structures on the n-torus we retri…
Few explicit families of 3-folds are known for which the computation of the canonical ring is accessible and the birational geometry non-trivial. In this note we investigate a family of determinantal 3-folds in $\mathbb P^2 \times \mathbb P^3$ where this is the case.
In this paper, we proved that a log smooth family of log general type klt pairs with a special (in the sense of Campana) quasi-projective base is isotrivial. As a consequence, we proved the generalized Kebekus-Kovács conjecture \cite[Conjecture 1.1]{WW19}, for smooth families of general type varieties as well as log smooth families of log canonical pairs of log general type, assuming the existence of relative good minimal models.
We extend the Serre-Tate theory of canonical lifts of ordinary abelian varieties to arbitrary unpolarised families of ordinary abelian varieties parameterised by a $p$-adic formal scheme $S$. We show that the canonical lift is the unique lift to $W(S)$ which admits a $δ$-structure in the sense of Joyal, Buium, and Bousfield. We prove analogous statements for families of ordinary $p$-groups and $p$-divisible groups.
Given the same anti-canonical linear system on two distinct toric varieties, we provide a derived equivalence between partial crepant resolutions of the corresponding stacky hypersurfaces. The applications include: a derived unification of toric mirror constructions, calculations of Picard lattices for linear systems of quartic surfaces, and a birational reduction of Reid's list to 81 families.
We prove a global Torelli theorem for pairs (Y,D), where Y is a smooth projective rational surface and D is an effective anti-canonical divisor which is a cycle of rational curves. This Torelli theorem was conjectured by Friedman in 1984. In addition, we construct natural universal families for such pairs.
Let Y be a projective non-singular curve of genus g, X a projective manifold, both defined over the field of complex numbers, and let f:X ---> Y be a surjective morphism with general fibre F. If the Kodaira dimension of X is non-negative, and if Y is the projective line we show that f has at least 3 singular fibres. In general, for non-isotrivial morphisms f, one expects that the number of singular fibres is at least 3, if g=0, or at least 1, if g=1. Using the strong additivity of the Kodaira dimension, this is verified, if either F is of general type, or if F has a minimal model with a semi-a…
In this paper we show that the global (log) canonical threshold of $d$-sheeted covers of the $M$-dimensional projective space of index 1, where $d\geqslant 4$, is equal to one for almost all families (except for a finite set). The varieties are assumed to have at most quadratic singularities, the rank of which is bounded from below, and to satisfy the regularity conditions. This implies birational rigidity of new large classes of Fano-Mori fibre spaces over a base, the dimension of which is bounded from above by a constant that depends (quadratically) on the dimension of the fibre only.
For smooth families with maximal variation, whose general fibers have semi-ample canonical bundle, the generalized Viehweg hyperbolicity conjecture states that the base spaces of such families are of log general type. This deep conjecture was recently proved by Popa-Schnell using the theory of Hodge modules and a theorem by Campana-Păun. In this paper we prove that those base spaces are pseudo Kobayashi hyperbolic, as predicted by the Lang conjecture: any complex quasi-projective manifold is pseudo Kobayashi hyperbolic if it is of log general type. As a consequence, we prove the Brody hyperbol…
We give a simple expression for the integral of the canonical holomorphic volume form in degenerating families of varieties constructed from wall structures and with central fiber a union of toric varieties. The cycles to integrate over are constructed from tropical 1-cycles in the intersection complex of the central fiber. One application is a proof that the mirror map for the canonical formal families of Calabi-Yau varieties constructed by Gross and the second author is trivial. We also show that these families are the completion of an analytic family, without reparametrization, and that the…
In this paper, we classify the minimal surfaces of general type with $χ=5$, $K^{2}=9$ whose canonical map is composed with an involution. We obtain 6 families, whose dimensions in the moduli space are 28, 27, 33, 32, 31 and 32 respectively. Among them, the family of surfaces having a genus 2 fibration forms an irreducible component of $\mathfrak{M}_{χ=5, K^{2}=9}$.
We classify the bi-canonical representations of finite automorphisms on Enriques surfaces. There are three types of non-trivial cases and examples are given explicitly by Horikawa models. In particular, finite non-semi-symplectic automorphisms exist only in orders 4 and 8. One corollary is that any finite cyclic subgroup in the automorphism group of an Enriques surface has order 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8. Moreover, for two of the three types, a uniqueness theorem for maximal-dimensional families is given.
We give an algorithm that, for a given value of the geometric genus $p_g,$ computes all regular product-quotient surfaces with abelian group that have at most canonical singularities and have canonical system with at most isolated base points. We use it to show that there are exactly two families of such surfaces with canonical map of degree $32$. We also construct a surface with $q=1$ and canonical map of degree $24$. These are regular surfaces with $p_g=3$ and base point free canonical system. We discuss the case of regular surfaces with $p_g=4$ and base point free canonical system.
We classify the minimal surfaces of general type with $K^2 \leq 4χ-8$ whose canonical map is composed with a pencil, up to a finite number of families. More precisely we prove that there is exactly one irreducible family for each value of $χ\gg 0$, $4χ-10 \leq K^2 \leq 4χ-8$. All these surfaces are complete intersections in a toric $4-$fold and bidouble covers of Hirzebruch surfaces. The surfaces with $K^2=4χ-8$ were previously constructed by Catanese as bidouble covers of $\PP^1 \times \PP^1$.
We investigate the following question: let $C$ be an integral curve contained in a smooth complex algebraic surface $X$; is it possible to deform $C$ in $X$ into a nodal curve while preserving its geometric genus? We affirmatively answer it in most cases when $X$ is a Del Pezzo or Hirzebruch surface, and in some cases when $X$ is a $K3$ surface. Partial results are given for all surfaces with numerically trivial canonical class. We also give various examples for which the answer is negative.
Let f: X -> Y be a smooth family of canonically polarized complex varieties over a smooth base. Generalizing the classical Shafarevich hyperbolicity conjecture, Viehweg conjectured that Y is necessarily of log general type if the family has maximal variation. A somewhat stronger and more precise version of Viehweg's conjecture was shown by the authors in arXiv:math/0511378 in the case where Y is a quasi-projective surface. Assuming that the minimal model program holds, this very short paper proves the same result for projective base manifolds Y of arbitrary dimension.
Generalizing the well-known Shafarevich hyperbolicity conjecture, it has been conjectured by Viehweg that a quasi-projective manifold that admits a generically finite morphism to the moduli stack of canonically polarized varieties is necessarily of log general type. Given a quasi-projective threefold Y that admits a non-constant map to the moduli stack, we employ extension properties of logarithmic pluri-forms to establish a strong relationship between the moduli map and the minimal model program of Y: in all relevant cases the minimal model program leads to a fiber space whose fibration facto…
Generalizing the well-known Shafarevich hyperbolicity conjecture, it has been conjectured by Viehweg that a quasi-projective manifold that admits a generically finite morphism to the moduli stack of canonically polarized varieties is necessarily of log general type. Given a quasi-projective surface that maps to the moduli stack, we employ extension properties of logarithmic pluri-forms to establish a strong relationship between the moduli map and the minimal model program of the surface. As a result, we can describe the fibration induced by the moduli map quite explicitly. A refined affirmativ…
We develop a Hodge theoretic invariant for families of projective manifolds that measures the potential failure of an Arakelov-type inequality in higher dimensions, one that naturally generalizes the classical Arakelov inequality over regular quasi-projective curves. We show that for families of manifolds with ample canonical bundle this invariant is uniformly bounded. As a consequence we establish that such families over a base of arbitrary dimension verify the aforementioned Arakelov inequality, answering a question of Viehweg.
For $n\geq 2$, let $K=\overline{\mathbb{Q}}(\mathbb{P}^n)=\overline{\mathbb{Q}}(T_1, \ldots, T_n)$. Let $E/K$ be the elliptic curve defined by a minimal Weiestrass equation $y^2=x^3+Ax+B$, with $A,B \in \overline{\mathbb{Q}}[T_1, \ldots, T_n]$. There's a canonical height $\hat{h}_{E}$ on $E(K)$ induced by the divisor $(O)$, where $O$ is the zero element of $E(K)$. On the other hand, for each smooth hypersurface $Γ$ in $\mathbb{P}^n$ such that the reduction mod $Γ$ of $E$, $E_Γ / \overline{\mathbb{Q}}(Γ)$ is an elliptic curve with the zero element $O_Γ$, there is also a canonical height $\hat{h…
Let X/T be a one parameter family of canonical 3-folds and let D be a Weil divisor on it flat over T. We study the problem of when the D_t-minimal models of X_t form a family and we obtain conditions for this to happen. As an application of this we classify terminal divisorial contractions Y-->X that contract an irreducible divisor E onto a smooth curve C in the case when the general hyperplane section S of X through C is a D5 DuVal singularity.
Monodromy in analytic families of smooth complex surfaces yields groups of isotopy classes of orientation preserving diffeomorphisms for each family member X. For all deformation classes of minimal elliptic surfaces with p_g>q=0, we determine the monodromy group of a representative X, i.e. the group of isometries of the intersection lattice L_X:=H_2/torsion generated by the monodromy action of all families containing X. To this end we construct families such that any isometry is in the group generated by their monodromies or does not respect the invariance of the canonical class or the spinor …
