This paper concerns the construction of minimal varieties with small canonical volumes. The first part devotes to establishing an effective nefness criterion for the canonical divisor of a weighted blow-up over a weighted hypersurface, from which we construct plenty of new minimal $3$-folds including $59$ families of minimal $3$-folds of general type, several infinite series of minimal $3$-folds of Kodaira dimension $2$, $2$ families of minimal $3$-folds of general type on the Noether line, and $12$ families of minimal $3$-folds of general type near the Noether line. In the second part, we prove effective lower bounds of canonical volumes of minimal $n$-folds of general type with canonical dimension $n-1$ or $n-2$. Examples are provided to show that the theoretical lower bounds are optimal in dimension less than or equal to $5$ and nearly optimal in higher dimensions.
Considering quasismooth varieities as global $\CC^*$ quotients, we present a Riemann-Roch formula via general Riemann-Roch formula for quotient stacks. Furthermore, we give a parcing formula for Hilbert series associated to a polarized quasismooth projectively Gorenstein algebraic varieties with orbifold curves and dissident points, which is an extension of the result in \cite{BRZ}.
This paper investigates the density of hypersurfaces in a projective normal simplicial toric variety over a finite field having a quasismooth intersection with a given quasismooth subscheme. The result generalizes the formula found by B. Poonen for smooth projective varieties. As an application, we further analyze the density of hypersurfaces with bounds on their number of singularities and on the length of their singular schemes.
We classify four-dimensional quasismooth weighted hypersurfaces with small canonical class, and verify a conjecture of Johnson and Kollar on infinite series of quasismooth hypersurfaces with anticanonical hyperplane section in the case of fourfolds. By considering the quotient singularities that arise, we classify those weighted hypersurfaces that are canonical, Calabi-Yau, and Fano fourfolds. We also consider other classes of hypersurfaces, including Fano hypersurfaces of index greater than 1 in dimensions 3 and 4.
We classify birational maps into elliptic fibrations of a general quasismooth hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}(1,a_{1},a_{2},a_{3},a_{4})$ of degree $\sum_{i=1}^{4}a_{i}$ that has terminal singularities.
We compute global log canonical thresholds of a large class of quasismooth well-formed del Pezzo weighted hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{P}(a_{1},a_{2},a_{3},a_{4})$. As a corollary we obtain the existence of orbifold Kähler--Einstein metrics on many of them, and classify exceptional and weakly exceptional quasismooth well-formed del Pezzo weighted hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{P}(a_{1},a_{2},a_{3},a_{4})$.
We provide a combinatorial characterization of monomial linear systems on toric varieties whose general member is quasismooth. This is given both in terms of the Newton polytope and in terms of the matrix of exponents of a monomial basis.
We study global log canonical thresholds on anticanonically embedded quasismooth weighted Fano threefold hypersurfaces having terminal quotient singularities to prove the existence of a Kahler-Einstein metric on most of them, and to produce examples of Fano varieties with infinite discrete groups of birational automorphisms.
We determine the rationality of very general quasismooth Fano 3-fold weighted hypersurfaces completely and determine the stable rationality of them except for cubic 3-folds. More precisely we prove that (i) very general Fano 3-fold weighted hypersurfaces of index 1 or 2 are not stably rational except possibly for the cubic threefolds, (ii) among the 27 families of Fano 3-fold weighted hypersurfaces of index greater than 2, very general members of specific 7 families are not stably rational and the remaining 20 families consists of rational varieties.
We study birational transformations into elliptic fibrations and birational automorphisms of quasismooth anticanonically embedded weighted Fano 3-fold hypersurfaces having terminal singularities classified by A.R. Iano-Fletcher, J. Johnson, J. Kollar, and M. Reid.
We study del Pezzo surfaces that are quasismooth and well-formed weighted hypersurfaces. In particular, we find all such surfaces whose alpha-invariant of Tian is greater than 2/3.
We introduce an algebraic method for describing the Hodge filtration of degenerating hypersurfaces in projective toric varieties. For this purpose, we show some fundamental properties of logarithmic differential forms on proper equivariant morphisms of toric varieties.
The secant varieties of Severi varieties provide special examples of (singular) cubic hypersurfaces. An interesting question asks when a given cubic hypersurface is projectively equivalent to a secant cubic hypersurface. Inspired by the ''geometric'' Torelli theorem for smooth cubic hypersurfaces due to F. Charles, we study the geometry of lines on secant cubics and describe the Fano variety of lines. Then we verify the ''geometric'' Torelli theorem for the case of secant cubics. Namely, a cubic hypersurface is isomorphic to a secant cubic if and only if their Fano varieties of lines are isomo…
In this paper, we investigate when there exists a wild hypersurface bundle over a smooth proper toric variety in positive characteristic. In particular, we determine the possibilities for toric varieties with Picard number at most three or toric Fano varieties of dimension at most four. Moreover, we can construct wild hypersurface bundles over them.
We study the geometry and cohomology of semiample hypersurfaces in toric varieties. Such hypersurfaces generalize the MPCP-desingularizations of Calabi-Yau ample hypersurfaces in the Batyrev mirror construction. We study the topological cup product on the middle cohomology of semiample hypersurfaces. In particular, we obtain a complete algebraic description of the middle cohomology of regular semiample hypersurfaces in 4-dimensional simplicial toric varieties what would be interesting for physics.
It is shown that an irreducible cubic hypersurface with nonzero Hessian and smooth singular locus is the secant variety of a Severi variety if and only if its Lie algebra of infinitesimal linear automorphisms admits a nonzero prolongation.
For a hypersurface in a projective space, we consider the set of pairs of a point and a line in the projective space such that the line intersects the hypersurface at the point with a fixed multiplicity. We prove that this set of pairs forms a smooth variety for a general hypersurface.
We show that very general hypersurfaces in odd-dimensional simplicial projective toric varieties verifying a certain combinatorial property satisfy the Hodge conjecture (these include projective spaces). This gives a connection between the Oda conjecture and Hodge conjecture. We also give an explicit criterion which depends on the degree for very general hypersurfaces for the combinatorial condition to be verified.
Under a hypothesis on $k$, $d$ and $n$ that is almost the best possible, we prove that for every smooth degree $d$ hypersurface in $P^n$, the $k$-plane sections dominate the moduli space of degree $d$ hypersurface in $P^k$. Using this we prove rational simple connectedness of every smooth degree $d$ hypersurface in $P^n$, under a suitable hypothesis on $d$ and $n$ (previous results were only for general hypersurfaces).
The purpose of this paper is to compute the degree of irrationality of hypersurfaces of sufficiently high degree in various Fano varieties: quadrics, Grassmannians, products of projective space, cubic threefolds, cubic fourfolds, and complete intersection threefolds of type (2,2). This extends the techniques of Bastianelli, De Poi, Ein, Lazarsfeld, and the second author who computed the degree of irrationality of hypersurfaces of sufficiently high degree in projective space. A theme in the paper is that the fibers of low degree rational maps from the hypersurfaces to projective space tend to l…
Trinomial varieties are affine varieties given by some special system of equations consisting of polynomials with three terms. Such varieties are total coordinate spaces of normal rational varieties with torus action of complexity one. For an affine variety X we consider the subgroup SAut(X) of the automorphism group generated by all algebraic subgroups isomorphic to the additive group of the ground field. An affine variety X is rigid if SAut(X) is trivial. In opposite an affine variety is flexible if SAut(X) acts transitively on the regular locus. Arzhantsev proved a criterium for a factorial…
Let $\mathscr{X}\to W$ be a flat family of generically irreducible hypersurfaces of degree $d\geq 2$ in $\PP^n$ with singular locus of dimension $t$, with $W$ unirational of dimension $r$. We prove that if $n$ is large enough with respect to $d$, $r$ and $t$, then $\mathscr{X}$ is unirational. This extends results in \cite {Pre, HMP}.
The variety of all smooth hypersurfaces of given degree and dimension has the Fermat hypersurface as a natural base point. In order to study the period map for such varieties, we first determine the integral polarized Hodge structure of the primitive cohomology of a Fermat hypersurface (as a module over the automorphism group of the hypersurface). We then focus on the degree 3 case and show that the period map for cubic fourfolds as analyzed by R. Laza and the author gives complete information about the period map for cubic hypersurfaces of lower dimension dimension. In particular, we thus rec…
Given a compact Kähler manifold, the Infinitesimal Torelli problem asks whether the differential of the period map of a Kuranishi family is injective. Unlike the classical Torelli theorem for curves, there is a negative answer for example for hyperelliptic curves of genus greater than $2$. Nevertheless the Infinitesimal Torelli Theorem holds for many other classes of manifolds. We will prove it for smooth hypersurfaces in simple abelian varieties with sufficiently high self-intersection giving an effective bound on a result by Green in this particular case.
We provide a construction of examples of semistable degeneration via toric geometry. The applications include a higher dimensional generalization of classical degeneration of K3 surface into 4 rational components, an algebraic geometric version of decomposing K3 as the fiber sum of two E(1)'s as well as it's higher dimensional generalizations, and many other new examples.
We construct new subvarieties in the varieties of power sums for certain quartic hypersurfaces. This provides a generalization of Mukai's description of smooth prime Fano threefolds of genus twelve as the varieties of power sums for plane quartics. In fact, in our second paper, we show that these quartics are exactly the Scorza quartics associated to general pairs of trigonal curves and ineffective theta characteristics and this enables us to prove there the main cojecture of Dolgachev and Kanev.
Alex Waldron proved that for sufficiently general degree $d$ hypersurfaces in projective $n$-space, the Fano scheme parameterizing $r$-dimensional linear spaces contained in the hypersurface is nonempty precisely for the degree range $n\geq N_1(r,d)$ where the "expected dimension" $f_1(n,r,d)$ is nonnegative, in which case $f_1(n,r,d)$ equals the (pure) dimension. Using work by Gleb Nenashev, we prove that for sufficiently general degree $d$ hypersurfaces in projective $n$-space, the parameter space of $r$-dimensional $e$-uple Veronese varieties contained in the hypersurface is nonempty of pur…
In the paper we present new examples of unexpected varieties. The research on unexpected varieties started with a paper of Cook II, Harbourne, Migliore and Nagel and was continued in the paper of Harbourne, Migliore, Nagel and Teitler. Here we present three ways of producing unexpected varieties that expand on what was previously known. In the paper of Harbourne, Migliore, Nagel and Teitler, cones on varieties of codimension 2 were used to produce unexpected hypersurfaces. Here we show that cones on positive dimensional varieties of codimension 2 or more almost always give unexpected hypersurf…
We study the equivalence between infinitesimal Torelli theorem for smooth hypersurfaces in rational homogeneous varieties with Picard number one and the theory of generalized Massey products. This equivalence shows that the differential of the period map vanishes on an infinitesimal deformation if and only if certain twisted differential forms are elements of the Jacobian ideal of the hypersurface. We also prove an infinitesimal Torelli theorem result for smooth hypersurfaces in log parallelizable varieties.
We describe a method to construct hypersurfaces of the complex affine $n$-space with isomorphic $\mathbb{C}^*$-cylinders. Among these hypersurfaces, we find new explicit counterexamples to the Laurent Cancellation Problem, i.e. hypersurfaces that are non isomorphic, although their $\mathbb{C}^*$-cylinders are isomorphic as abstract algebraic varieties. We also provide examples of non isomorphic varieties $X$ and $Y$ with isomorphic cartesian squares $X\times X$ and $Y\times Y$.
A real algebraic variety is maximal (with respect to the Smith-Thom inequality) if the sum of the Betti numbers (with $\mathbb{Z}_2$ coefficients) of the real part of the variety is equal to the sum of Betti numbers of its complex part. We prove that there exist polytopes that are not Newton polytopes of any maximal hypersurface in the corresponding toric variety. On the other hand we show that for any polytope $Δ$ there are families of hypersurfaces with the Newton polytopes $(λΔ)_{λ\in \mathbb{N}}$ that are asymptotically maximal when $λ$ tends to infinity. We also show that these results ge…
Linearly projecting smooth projective varieties provides a method of obtaining hypersurfaces birational to the original varieties. We show that in low dimension, the resulting hypersurfaces only have Du Bois singularities. Moreover, we conclude that these Du Bois singularities are in fact semi log canonical. However, we demonstrate the existence of counterexamples in high dimension -- the generic linear projection of certain varieties of dimension 30 or higher is neither semi log canonical nor Du Bois.
Let X be a projective hypersurface in P_k^n of degree d <= n. In this paper we study the relation between the class [X] in K_0(Var_k) and the existence of k-rational points. Using elementary geometric methods we show, for some particular X, that X(k) is nonempty if and only if [X] is equivalent to 1 modulo the class of the affine line in K_0(Var_k). More precisely we consider the following cases: a union of hyperplanes, a quadric, a cubic hypersurface with a singular k-rational point, and a quartic which is a union of two quadrics one of which being smooth.
Classical Castelnuovo's Lemma shows that the number of linearly independent quadratic equations of a nondegenerate irreducible projective variety of codimension $c$ is at most ${{c+1} \choose {2}}$ and the equality is attained if and only if the variety is of minimal degree. Also a generalization of Castelnuovo's Lemma by G. Fano implies that the next case occurs if and only if the variety is a del Pezzo variety. For curve case, these results are extended to equations of arbitrary degree respectively by J. Harris and S. L'vovsky. This paper is intended to extend these results to arbitrary dime…
We provide a sufficient condition for a general hypersurface in a $\mathbb Q$-Fano toric variety to be a Calabi-Yau variety in terms of its Newton polytope. Moreover, we define a generalization of the Berglund-Hübsch-Krawitz construction in case the ambient is a $\mathbb Q$-Fano toric variety with torsion free class group and the defining polynomial is not necessarily of Delsarte type. Finally, we introduce a duality between families of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces which includes both Batyrev and Berglund-Hübsch-Krawitz mirror constructions. This is given in terms of a polar duality between pairs …
We use a generalization of Horrocks monads for arithmetic Cohen-Macaulay (ACM) varieties to establish a cohomological characterization of linear and Steiner bundles over projective spaces and quadric hypersurfaces. We also study resolutions of bundles on ACM varieties by line bundles, and characterize linear homological dimension in the case of quadric hypersurfaces.
We establish the Hodge conjecture for some subvarieties of a class of toric varieties. First we study quasi-smooth intersections in a projective simplicial toric variety, which is a suitable notion to generalize smooth complete intersection subvarieties in the toric environment, and in particular quasi-smooth hypersurfaces. We show that under appropriate conditions, the Hodge Conjecture holds for a very general quasi-smooth intersection subvariety, generalizing the work on quasi-smooth hypersurfaces of the first author and Grassi in [3]. We also show that the Hodge Conjecture holds asymptotica…
Trinomial hypersurfaces form a natural class of affine algebraic varieties closely connected with varieties admitting a torus action of complexity one. We investigate orbits of the automorphism group on these hypersurfaces. We prove that each nonrigid trinomial variety has finite number of orbits. We investigate singular orbits and this gives us description of all orbits for some classes of flexible trinomial hypersurfaces. Also we obtain a description of orbits for a class of hypersurfaces having a unique variable with power one in the equation.
We study the birational geometry of irreducible holomorphic symplectic varieties arising as varieties of lines of general cubic fourfolds containing a cubic scroll. We compute the ample and moving cones, and exhibit a birational automorphism of infinite order explaining the chamber decomposition of the moving cone.
Given the space $V={\mathbb P}^{\binom{d+n-1}{n-1}-1}$ of forms of degree $d$ in $n$ variables, and given an integer $\ell>1$ and a partition $λ$ of $d=d_1+\cdots+d_r$, it is in general an open problem to obtain the dimensions of the $\ell$-secant varieties $σ_\ell ({\mathbb X}_{n-1,λ})$ for the subvariety ${\mathbb X}_{n-1,λ} \subset V$ of hypersurfaces whose defining forms have a factorization into forms of degrees $d_1,\ldots,d_r$. Modifying a method from intersection theory, we relate this problem to the study of the Weak Lefschetz Property for a class of graded algebras, based on which we…
We investigate the logarithmic bundles associated to arrangements of hypersurfaces with a fixed degree in a smooth projective variety. We then specialize to the case when the variety is a quadric hypersurface and a multiprojective space to prove a Torelli type theorem in some cases.
In this paper, we address the following two general problems: given two algebraic varieties in ${\bf C}^n$, find out whether or not they are (1) isomorphic; (2) equivalent under an automorphism of ${\bf C}^n$. Although a complete solution of either of these problems is out of the question at this time, we give here some handy and useful invariants of isomorphic as well as of equivalent varieties. Furthermore, and more importantly, we give a universal procedure for obtaining all possible algebraic varieties isomorphic to a given one, and use it to construct numerous examples of isomorphic, but …
We show that complex Fano hypersurfaces can have arbitrarily large degrees of irrationality. More precisely, if we fix a Fano index e, then the degree of irrationality of a very general complex Fano hypersurface of index e and dimension n is bounded from below by a constant times $\sqrt{n}$. To our knowledge this gives the first examples of rationally connected varieties with degrees of irrationality greater than 3. The proof follows a degeneration to characteristic p argument which Kollár used to prove nonrationality of Fano hypersurfaces. Along the way we show that in a family of varieties, …
There are easy "polynomial" deformations of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in toric varieties performed by changing the coefficients of the defining polynomial of the hypersurface. In this paper, we explicitly constructed the ``non-polynomial'' deformations of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces, which arise from deformations of the ambient toric variety.
We investigate the arrangement of hypersurfaces on a nonsingular varieties whose associated logarithmic vector bundle is arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (for short, aCM), and prove that the projective space is the only smooth complete intersection with Picard rank one that admits an aCM logarithmic vector bundle. We also obtain a number of results on aCM logarithmic vector bundles over several specific varieties. As an opposite situation we investigate the Torelli-type problem that the logarithmic cohomology determines the arrangement.
