One of the simplest examples of a smooth, non degenerate surface in P^4 is the quintic elliptic scroll. It can be constructed from an elliptic normal curve E by joining every point on E with the translation of this point by a non-zero 2-torsion point. The same construction can be applied when E is replaced by a (lineaerly normally embedded) abelian variety A. In this paper we ask the question when the resulting scroll Y is smooth. If A is an abelian surface embedded by a line bundle L of type (d_1,d_2) and r=d_1d_2, then we prove that for general A the scroll Y is smooth if r is at least 7 with the one exception where r=8 and the 2-torsion point is in the kernel K(L) of L. In this case Y is singular. The case r=7 is particularly interesting, since then Y is a smooth threefold in P^6 with irregularity 2. The existence of this variety seems not to have been noticed before. One can also show that the case of the quintic elliptic scroll and the above case are the only possibilities where Y is smooth and the codimension of Y is at most half the dimension of the surrounding projective space.
In this paper we investigate the exactness of the Grassmannian BGG complexes introduced in a previous work (arXiv:1211.2486), and obtain some inequalities between some Hodge numbers of some irregular varieties. In particular, we obtain sharp lower bounds for the Hodge numbers of smooth subvarieties of Abelian varieties, as well as some improvements of results of Lazarsfeld and Popa and Lombardi concerning threefolds and fourfolds.
We give a sharp lower bound for the selfintersection of a nef line bundle $L$ on an irregular variety $X$ in terms of its continuous global sections and the Albanese dimension of $X$, which we call the Generalized Clifford-Severi inequality. We also extend the result to nef vector bundles and give a slope inequality for fibred irregular varieties. As a byproduct we obtain a lower bound for the volume of irregular varieties; when $X$ is of maximal Albanese dimension the bound is $Vol(X) \geq 2 n! χω_X$ and it is sharp.
Euler-symmetric projective varieties are nondegenerate projective varieties admitting many C*-actions of Euler type. They are quasi-homogeneous and uniquely determined by their fundamental forms at a general point. We show that Euler-symmetric projective varieties can be classified by symbol systems, a class of algebraic objects modeled on the systems of fundamental forms at general points of projective varieties. We study relations between the algebraic properties of symbol systems and the geometric properties of Euler-symmetric projective varieties. We describe also the relation between Eule…
For an irregular variety $X$ of general type, we show that if a general fiber $F$ of the Albanese morphism of $X$ satisfies certain Hodge theoretic condition, the $0$-th cohomological support loci of $K_X$ generates the Picard variety of $X$ . We then show that the condition that the $0$-th cohomological support loci of $K_X$ generates the Picard variety of $X$ can often be applied to prove the birationality of certain pluricanonical maps of $X$.
We prove that the irregularity of a smooth abelian scroll whose dimension is at least half of that of the surrounding projective space is bounded by 2. In addition we discuss some existence results and open problems.
We compute the Hilbert series of general weighted flag varieties and discuss a computer-aided method to determine their defining equations. We apply our results to weighted flag varieties coming from the Lie groups of type G_2 and GL(6), to construct some families of polarised projective varieties in codimensions 8 and 6, respectively.
We give a classification of embedded smooth projective varieties swept out by rational homogeneous varieties whose Picard number and codimension are one.
We study the behavior of cohomological support loci of the canonical bundle under derived equivalence of smooth projective varieties. This is achieved by investigating the derived invariance of a generalized version of Hochschild homology. Furthermore, using techniques coming from birational geometry, we establish the derived invariance of the Albanese dimension for varieties having non-negative Kodaira dimension. We apply our machinery to study the derived invariance of the holomorphic Euler characteristic and of certain Hodge numbers for special classes of varieties. Further applications con…
Inspired by Beauville's recent construction of Ulrich sheaves on abelian surfaces, we pose the question of whether a torsion-free sheaf on a polarized smooth projective variety with Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity 1 is a GV (generic vanishing) sheaf, and present evidence that this question is governed by the positivity of cycles on generalized Brill-Noether loci. We prove that it has an affirmative answer for natural polarizations on many well-known irregular surfaces, as well as some polarizations on ruled threefolds over a curve.
Let $A$ be an abelian variety over an algebraically closed field. We show that $A$ is the automorphism group scheme of some smooth projective variety if and only if $A$ has only finitely many automorphisms as an algebraic group. This generalizes a result of Lombardo and Maffei for complex abelian varieties.
We prove that any smooth complex projective variety with generic vanishing index bigger or equal than 2 has birational bicanonical map. Therefore, if X is a smooth complex projective variety X with maximal Albanese dimension and non-birational bicanonical map, then the Albanese image of X is fibered by subvarieties of codimension at most 1 of an abelian subvariety of Alb X.
It is known that projective minimal models satisfy the celebrated Miyaoka-Yau inequalities. In this article, we extend these inequalities to the set of all smooth, projective and non-uniruled varieties.
We compute the divisor class group and the Picard group of projective varieties with Hibi rings as homogeneous coordinate rings. These varieties are precisely the toric varieties associated to order polytopes. We use tools from the theory of toric varieties to get a description of the two groups which only depends on combinatorial properties of the underlying poset.
Here we explore the geometry of the osculating spaces to projective varieties of arbitrary dimension. In particular, we classify varieties having very degenerate higher order osculating spaces and we determine mild conditions for the existence of inflectionary points.
From the point of view of uniform bounds for the birationality of pluricanonical maps, irregular varieties of general type and maximal Albanese dimension behave similarly to curves. In fact Chen-Hacon showed that, at least when their holomorphic Euler characteristic is positive, the tricanonical map of such varieties is always birational. In this paper we study the bicanonical map. We consider the natural subclass of varieties of maximal Albanese dimension formed by primitive varieties of Albanese general type. We prove that the only such varieties with non-birational bicanonical map are the n…
Symmetric varieties are normal equivariant open embeddings of symmetric homogeneous spaces and they are interesting examples of spherical varieties. The principal goal of this article is to study the rigidity under Kähler deformations of smooth projective symmetric varieties with Picard number one.
The Lefschetz algebra $L^*(X)$ of a smooth complex projective variety $X$ is the subalgebra of the cohomology algebra of $X$ generated by divisor classes. We construct smooth complex projective varieties whose Lefschetz algebras do not satisfy analogues of the hard Lefschetz theorem and Poincaré duality.
We define a quasi--projective reduction of a complex algebraic variety $X$ to be a regular map from $X$ to a quasi--projective variety that is universal with respect to regular maps from $X$ to quasi--projective varieties. A toric quasi--projective reduction is the analogous notion in the category of toric varieties. For a given toric variety $X$ we first construct a toric quasi--projective reduction. Then we show that $X$ has a quasi--projective reduction if and only if its toric quasi--projective reduction is surjective. We apply this result to characterize when the action of a subtorus on a…
In this note we introduce the concept of reflective projective varieties. These are stratified projective varieties with certain dimension constraints on their dual varieties. We prove that for such varieties, the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes of the strata completely determine the local Euler obstructions and the polar degrees. We also propose an algorithm to compute the local Euler obstructions when such varieties are formed by group orbits. As examples we compute the local Euler obstructions of quadratic hypersurfaces and ordinary determinantal varieties to illustrate our method.
We study the equivariant cobordism rings for the action of a torus $T$ on smooth varieties over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. We prove a theorem describing the rational $T$-equivariant cobordism rings of smooth projective $G$-spherical varieties with the action of a maximal torus $T$ of $G$. As an application, we obtain explicit presentations for the rational equivariant cobordism rings of smooth projective horospherical varieties of Picard number one.
We describe smooth projective horospherical varieties with Picard number 1. Moreover we prove that the automorphism group of any such variety acts with at most two orbits and we give a geometric characterisation of non-homogeneous ones.
We prove an elementary but somewhat unexpected result about projective embeddings of smooth varieties X whose cotangent bundles are numerically effective. Specifically, we show that the degree of X in any projective embedding must grow (almost) exponentially in the dimension of X.
We show that the moduli space of rank three toric vector bundles on smooth projective toric varieties satisfies Murphy's law, that is, every singularity type of finite type arises somewhere on this space.
The geometric and algebraic properties of smooth projective varieties with 1-regular structure sheaf are well understood, and the complete classification of these varieties is a classical result. The aim of this paper is to study the next case: smooth projective varieties with 2-regular structure sheaf. First, we give a classification of such varieties using adjunction mappings. Next, under suitable conditions, we study the syzygies of section rings of those varieties to understand the structure of the Betti tables, and show a sharp bound for Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity.
We give an algorithm for computing Segre classes of subschemes of arbitrary projective varieties by computing degrees of a sequence of linear projections. Based on the fact that Segre classes of projective varieties commute with intersections by general effective Cartier divisors, we can compile a system of linear equations which determine the coefficients for the Segre class pushed forward to projective space. The algorithm presented here comes after several others which solve the problem in special cases, where the ambient variety is for instance projective space; to our knowledge, this is t…
We use a generalization of Horrocks monads for arithmetic Cohen-Macaulay (ACM) varieties to establish a cohomological characterization of linear and Steiner bundles over projective spaces and quadric hypersurfaces. We also study resolutions of bundles on ACM varieties by line bundles, and characterize linear homological dimension in the case of quadric hypersurfaces.
We classify all smooth projective horospherical varieties with Picard number 1. We prove that the automorphism group of any such variety X acts with at most two orbits and that this group still acts with only two orbits on X blown up at the closed orbit. We characterize all smooth projective two-orbits varieties with Picard number 1 that satisfy this latter property.
We make explicit the equations of any projective $PGL_2(\C)$-variety defined by quadrics. We study their zero-locus and their relationship with the geometry of the Veronese curve.
We shortly describe the algorithms behind some of the functions provided by the Macaulay2 package MultiprojectiveVarieties, a package for multi-projective varieties and rational maps between them.
We classify the Ulrich vector bundles of arbitrary rank on smooth projective varieties of minimal degree. In the process, we prove the stability of the sheaves of relative differentials on rational scrolls.
In this paper we characterize smooth complex projective varieties that admit a quadric bundle structure on some dense open subset in terms of the geometry of certain families of rational curves.
Let $G$ be a semi-simple algebraic group over a perfect field $k$. A lot of progress has been made recently in computing the Chow motives of projective $G$-homogenous varieties. When $k$ has positive characteristic, a broader class of $G$-homogeneous varieties appear. These are varieties over which $G$ acts transitively with possibly non-reduced isotropy subgroup. In this paper we study these varieties which we call ${\it \mbox{projective pseudo-homogeneous varieties}}$ for $G$ inner type over $k$ and prove that their motives satisfy Rost nilpotence. We also find their motivic decompositions a…
We reduce the problem of the projective normality of polarized abelian varieties to check the rank of very explicit matrices. This allow us to prove some results on normal generation of primitive line bundles on abelian threefolds and fourfolds. We also give two situations where the projective normality always fails. Finally we make some conjecture.
Let $\V$ be a mixed characteristic complete discrete valuation ring with perfect residue field $k$. We solve Berthelot's conjectures on the stability of the holonomicity over smooth projective formal $\V$-schemes. Then we build a category of complexes of arithmetic $\D$-modules over quasi-projective $k$-varieties with bounded, $F$-holonomic cohomology. We get its stability under Grothendieck's six operations.
So far only a few families of smooth irregular surfaces are known to exist in P^4 up to pullbacks by suitable finite morphisms from P^4 onto P^4 itself. In this paper we present two different constructions of irregular smooth minimal elliptic surfaces of degree 12 in P^4. The first is a monad construction while the other uses liaison. The family constructed via liaison includes the surfaces of the first family as a special case.
The automorphism group of a projective bundle P(E) over a simplicial toric variety is described when the bundle E is a direct sum of line bundles. Applications to study of moduli of complete intersections on toric varieties, including Calabi Yau m-folds and Del Pezzo surfaces, are indicated.
We prove that the universal cover of a normal, projective variety X is quasi-projective if and only if a finite, étale cover of X is a fiber bundle over an Abelian variety with simply connected fiber.
We define partially ample subvarieties of projective varieties, generalizing Ottem's work on ample subvarieties, and show their ubiquity. As an application, we obtain a connectedness result for pre-images of subvarieties by morphisms, reminiscent to a problem posed by Fulton-Hansen.
We give an example of a pair of projective symplectic varieties in arbitrarily large dimensions which are D-equivalent, L-equivalent, and birationally inequivalent.
We provide a generalization of the algorithm of Eklund-Jost-Peterson for computing Segre classes of closed subschemes of projective k-space. The algorithm is here generalized to computing the Segre classes of closed subschemes of smooth projective toric varieties.
In this paper we construct a tilting sheaf for Severi-Brauer Varieties and Involution Varieties. This sheaf relates the derived category of each variety to the derived category of modules over a ring whose semisimple component consists of the Tits algebras of the corresponding linear algebraic group.
In this article we prove new results on projective normality and normal presentation of adjunction bundle associated to an ample and globally generated line bundle on higher dimensional smooth projective varieties with nef canonical bundle. As one of the consequences of the main theorem, we give bounds on very ampleness and projective normality of pluricanonical linear systems on varieties of general type in dimensions three, four and five. These improve known such results.
We generalize the well-known numerical criterion for projective spaces by Cho, Miyaoka and Shepherd-Barron to varieties with at worst quotient singularities. Let $X$ be a normal projective variety of dimension $n \geq 3$ with at most quotient singularities. Our result asserts that if $C \cdot (-K_X) \geq n+1$ for every curve $C \subset X$, then $X \cong \PP^n$.
We give evidence for a uniformization-type conjecture, that any algebraic variety can be altered into a variety endowed with a tower of smooth fibrations of relative dimension one.
We list the irreducible reduced and not degenerate normal projective varieties $X\subset\mathbb{P}^N$ of dimension $n$ and degree five defined over an algebraically closed field $k$ of char$(k) = 0$. In the smooth case, or when $n = 2$, we give also classification results for any algebraically closed field $k$ of char$(k) \geq 0$.
We generalize Givental's Theorem for complete intersections in smooth toric varieties in the Fano case. In particular, we find Gromov--Witten invariants of Fano varieties of dimension $\geq 3$, which are complete intersections in weighted projective spaces and singular toric varieties. We generalize the Riemann-Roch equations to weighted projective spaces. We compute counting matrices of smooth Fano threefolds with Picard group Z and anticanonical degrees 2, 8, and 16.
This is an expository paper in which we define projective GIT quotients and introduce toric varieties from this perspective. It is intended primarily for readers who are learning either invariant theory or toric geometry for the first time.
