The purpose of this paper is to introduce and study certain irreducible perverse l-adic sheaves on a reductive group G over a finite field (we call them gamma-sheaves). One can construct such a sheaf starting with (almost) every finite-dimensional representation of the Langlands dual group. We present conjecture connecting the above sheaves with generalized gamma-functions introduced in our previous paper. We also conjecture that the convolution functor with the above sheaves enjoys certain nice properties (in particular, we compute the convolution of a gamma-sheaf with a character sheaf). We prove the above conjectures for G of semi-simple rank 0 or 1 and (partially) for G=GL(n).
We prove an analog of the Gauss-Bonnet formula for constructible sheaves on reductive groups. As a corollary from this formula we get that if a perverse sheaf on a reductive group is equivariant under the adjoint action, then its Euler characteristic is nonnegative.
This paper is an introduction, in a simplified setting, to Lusztig's theory of character sheaves. It develops a notion of character sheaves on reductive Lie algebras which is more general then such notion of Lusztig, and closer to Lusztig's theory of character sheaves on groups. The development is self contained and independent of the characteristic $p$ of the ground field. The results for Lie algebras are then used to give simple and uniform proofs for some of Lusztig's results on groups.
In this paper we propose a construction of generic character sheaves on reductive groups over finite local rings at even levels, whose characteristic functions are higher Deligne--Lusztig characters when the parameters are generic. We formulate a conjecture on the simple perversity of these complexes, and we prove it in the level two case (thus generalised a result of Lusztig from the function field case). We then discuss the induction and restriction functors, as well as the Frobenius reciprocity, based on the perversity.
Deligne constructed a remarkable local system on $\bP^1-\{0,\infty\}$ attached to a family of Kloosterman sums. Katz calculated its monodromy and asked whether there are Kloosterman sheaves for general reductive groups and which automorphic forms should be attached to these local systems under the Langlands correspondence. Motivated by work of Gross and Frenkel-Gross we find an explicit family of such automorphic forms and even a simple family of automorphic sheaves in the framework of the geometric Langlands program. We use these automorphic sheaves to construct l-adic Kloosterman sheaves for…
The aim of this paper is to identify a certain tensor category of perverse sheaves on the real loop Grassmannian of a real form $G_{\mathbb R}$ of a connected reductive complex algebraic group $G$ with the category of finite-dimensional representations of a connected reductive complex algebraic subgroup $\check H$ of the dual group $\check G$. The root system of $\check H$ is closely related to the restricted root system of the real form $G_{\mathbb R}$. The fact that $\check H$ is reductive implies that an interesting family of real algebraic maps satisfies the conclusion of the Decomposition…
This paper concerns character sheaves of connected reductive algebraic groups defined over non-Archimedean local fields and their relation with characters of smooth representations. Although character sheaves were devised with characters of representations of finite groups of Lie type in mind, character sheaves are perfectly well defined for reductive algebraic groups over any algebraically closed field. Nevertheless, the relation between character sheaves of an algebraic group $G$ over an algebraic closure of a field $K$ and characters of representations of $G(K)$ is well understood only when…
We briefly introduce the theory of perverse sheaves with special attention to the topological situation where strata can have odd dimension. This is part of a project to use perverse sheaves on the topological reductive Borel-Serre compactification of a Hermitian locally symmetric space as a tool to study perverse sheaves on the Baily-Borel compactification, a projective algebraic variety. We sketch why the decomposition theorem holds for the natural map between the reductive Borel-Serre and the Baily-Borel compactifications. We demonstrate how to calculate extensions of simple perverse sheave…
We extend the methods of geometric invariant theory to actions of non--reductive groups in the case of homomorphisms between decomposable sheaves whose automorphism groups are non--reductive. Given a linearization of the natural action of the group $\Aut(E)\times\Aut(F)$ on Hom(E,F), a homomorphism is called stable if its orbit with respect to the unipotent radical is contained in the stable locus with respect to the natural reductive subgroup of the automorphism group. We encounter effective numerical conditions for a linearization such that the corresponding open set of semi-stable homomorph…
Let X be a smooth projective complex variety, and let G be an algebraic reductive complex group. We define the notion of principal G-sheaf, that generalises the notion of principal G-bundle. Then we define a notion of semistability, and construct the projective moduli space of semistable principal G-sheaves on X. This is a natural compactification of the moduli space of principal G-bundles. This is the announcement note presented by the second author in the conference held at Catania (11-13 April 2001), dedicated to the 60th birthday of Silvio Greco. Detailed proofs will appear elsewhere.
In math.RT/0205144 we observed that, on the level of derived categories, representations of the Lie algebra of a semisimple algebraic group over a field of finite characteristic with a given (generalized) regular central character can be identified with coherent sheaves on the formal neighborhood of the corresponding (generalized) Springer fiber. In the present paper we treat singular central characters. The basic step is the Beilinson-Bernstein localization of modules with a fixed (generalized) central character as sheaves on the partial flag variety corresponding to the singularity of the ch…
By the geometric Satake isomorphism of Mirkovic and Vilonen, decomposition numbers for reductive groups can be interpreted as decomposition numbers for equivariant perverse sheaves on the complex affine Grassmannian of the Langlands dual group. Using a description of the minimal degenerations of the affine Grassmannian obtained by Malkin, Ostrik and Vybornov, we are able to recover geometrically some decomposition numbers for reductive groups. In the other direction, we can use some decomposition numbers for reductive groups to prove geometric results, such as a new proof of non-smoothness res…
Let $G$ be a reductive group over a finite field with a maximal unipotent subgroup $U$, we consider certain sheaves on $G/U$ defined by Kazhdan and Laumon and show that their cohomology produces the cohomology of the Deligne-Lusztig varieties. We then use this comparison to give a new proof of a result of Dudas.
We prove that cuspidal automorphic D-modules have non-vanishing Whittaker coefficients, generalizing known results in the geometric Langlands program from GL_n to general reductive groups. The key tool is a microlocal interpretation of Whittaker coefficients. We establish various exactness properties in the geometric Langlands context that may be of independent interest. Specifically, we show Hecke functors are t-exact on the category of tempered D-modules, strengthening a classical result of Gaitsgory (with different hypotheses) for GL_n. We also show that Whittaker coefficient functors are t…
In geometric representation theory, one often wishes to describe representations realized on spaces of invariant functions as trace functions of equivariant perverse sheaves. In the case of principal series representations of a connected split reductive group G over a local field, there is a description of families of these representations realized on spaces of functions on G invariant under the translation action of the Iwahori subgroup, or a suitable smaller compact open subgroup, studied by Howe, Bushnell and Kutzko, Roche, and others. In this paper, we construct categories of perverse shea…
The category of perverse sheaves on the affine Grassmannian of a complex reductive group $G$ gives a canonical geometric construction of the split form of the Langlands dual group $\check G_\bZ$ over the integers. Given a field $k$, we give a Tannakian construction of the quasi-split forms of $\check G_k$, as well as a construction of the gerbe associated to an inner form of $\check G_k$.
The purpose of this article is to set foundations for decomposition numbers of perverse sheaves, to give some methods to calculate them in simple cases, and to compute them concretely in two situations: for a simple (Kleinian) surface singularity, and for the closure of the minimal non-trivial orbit in a simple Lie algebra. This work has applications to modular representation theory, for Weyl groups using the nilpotent cone of the corresponding semisimple Lie algebra, and for reductive algebraic group schemes using the affine Grassmannian of the Langlands dual group.
This is an expanded version of the text ``Perverse Sheaves on Loop Grassmannians and Langlands Duality'', AG/9703010. The main new result is a topological realization of algebraic representations of reductive groups over arbitrary rings. We outline a proof of a geometric version of the Satake isomorphism. Given a connected, complex algebraic reductive group G we show that the tensor category of representations of the Langlands dual group is naturally equivalent to a certain category of perverse sheaves on the loop Grassmannian of G. The above result has been announced by Ginsburg in and some o…
Let G be a connected reductive group. The late Ramanathan gave a notion of (semi)stable principal G-bundle on a complex projective curve and constructed a projective moduli space of such objects. We generalize Ramanathan's notion and construction to the case of higher dimension, allowing also objects which we call semistable principal G-sheaves.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$ and let $\ell$ be another prime number. O. Gabber and F. Loeser proved that for any algebraic torus $T$ over $k$ and any perverse $\ell$-adic sheaf $\calF$ on $T$ the Euler characteristic $χ(\calF)$ is non-negative. We conjecture that the same result holds for any perverse sheaf $\calF$ on a reductive group $G$ over $k$ which is equivariant with respect to the adjoint action. We prove the conjecture when $\calF$ is obtained by Goresky-MacPherson extension from the set of regular semi-simple elements in $G$. From this we deduce th…
We prove, for all reductive groups, that the cohomology sheaves with compact support of stacks of shtukas are ind-smooth over $(X - N)^I$ and that their geometric generic fibers are equiped with an action of $\text{Weil}(X - N, \overlineη)^I$. Our method does not use any compactification of stacks of shtukas.
These are expanded notes on a lecture of the same title at the 2015 AMS summer institute in algebraic geometry. We give an introduction and overview of the "beyond geometric invariant theory" program for analyzing moduli problems in algebraic geometry. We discuss methods for analyzing stability in general moduli problems, focusing on the moduli of coherent sheaves on a smooth projective scheme as a toy example. We describe several applications: a general structure theorem for the derived category of coherent sheaves on an algebraic stack; some results on the topology of moduli stacks; and a "v…
In this article we prove a conjecture of Braverman and Kazhdan in \cite{BK1} on acyclicity of $ρ$-Bessel sheaves on reductive groups in both $\ell$-adic and de Rham settings. We do so by establishing a vanishing conjecture proposed in \cite{C1}. As a corollary, we obtain a geometric construction of the non-linear Fourier kernels for finite reductive groups as conjectured by Braverman and Kazhdan. The proof of the vanishing conjecture relies on the techniques developed in \cite{BFO} on Drinfeld center of Harish-Chandra bimodules and character D-modules, and a construction of a class of characte…
We study the intermediate extension of the character sheaves on an adjoint group to the semi-stable locus of its wonderful compactification. We show that the intermediate extension can be described by a direct image construction. As a consequence, we show that the ``ordinary'' restriction of a character sheaf on the compactification to a boundary piece inside the semi-stable locus is a shift of semisimple perverse sheaf and is closely related to Lusztig's restriction functor (from a character sheaf on a reductive group to a direct sum of character sheaves on a Levi subgroup). We also provide a…
In this paper we investigate the representations of reductive groups over a finite field, introduced in 1987 by D.Kazhdan and G.Laumon. We show that generically these representations are irreducible and that their character is equal to the function obtained by traces of Frobenius morphism on the stalks of the corresponding Lusztig's character sheaf. This, together with the corresponding result by G.Lusztig, implies that generic Kazhdan-Laumon representations are isomorphic to the corresponding Deligne-Lusztig representations. In the second half of the paper we give a direct geometric construct…
For a split reductive group $G$ over a finite field, we show that the neutral block of its mixed Hecke category with a fixed monodromy under the torus action is monoidally equivalent to the mixed Hecke category of the corresponding endoscopic group $H$ with trivial monodromy. We also extend this equivalence to all blocks. We give two applications. One is a relationship between character sheaves on $G$ with a fixed semisimple parameter and unipotent character sheaves on the endoscopic group $H$, after passing to asymptotic versions. The other is a similar relationship between representations of…
It was proved by Ginzburg and Mirkovic-Vilonen that the $G(O)$-equivariant perverse sheaves on the affine grassmannian of a connected reductive group $G$ form a tensor category equivalent to the tensor category of finite dimensional representations of the dual group $G^\vee$. The proof use the Tannakian formalism. The purpose of this paper is to construct explicitely the action of $G^\vee$ on the global cohomology of a perverse sheaf.
On a finite-dimensional real vector space, we give a microlocal characterization of (derived) piecewise linear sheaves (PL sheaves) and prove that the triangulated category of such sheaves is generated by sheaves associated with convex polyhedra. We then give a similar theorem for PL gamma-sheaves, that is, PL sheaves associated with the gamma-topology, for a closed convex polyhedral proper cone gamma. Our motivation is that convex polyhedra may be considered as building blocks for higher dimensional barcodes.
Let G be a reductive groups over an algebraically closed field k. Let P^{(i)} be associated parabolic subgroups, and X^{(i)}:=T^*G/P^i. The bounded derived categories of coherent sheaves on X^{(i)} are equivalent, but there is no canonical equivalence. By refining a construction from a previous paper, we construct a local system of categories over a topological space V^0_C, where these categories are assigned to different points in V^0_C. Natural equivalence functors between these categories are parameterized by homotopy classes of paths between the corresponding points.
Let $X$ be an integral model at a prime $p$ of a Shimura variety of PEL type having good reduction, associated to a reductive group $G$. To $\mathbb{Z}_p$ reprsententations of the group $G$ can be associated two kinds of sheaves : crystals on the special fiber of $X$, and locally constant étale sheaves on the generic fiber. We establish a comparison between the cohomology of these two kinds of sheaves.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective curve, $G$ a reductive group, and $Bun_G(X)$ the moduli of $G$-bundles on $X$. For each point of $X$, the Satake category acts by Hecke modifications on sheaves on $Bun_G(X)$. We show that, for sheaves with nilpotent singular support, the action is locally constant with respect to the point of $X$. This equips sheaves with nilpotent singular support with a module structure over perfect complexes on the Betti moduli $Loc_{G^\vee}(X)$ of dual group local systems. In particular, we establish the "automorphic to Galois" direction in the Betti Geometric Langlands corr…
Let X be an algebraic variety with an action of an algebraic group G. Suppose X has a full exceptional collection of sheaves, and these sheaves are invariant under the action of the group. We construct a semiorthogonal decomposition of bounded derived category of G-equivariant coherent sheaves on X into components, equivalent to derived categories of twisted representations of the group. If the group is finite or reductive over the algebraically closed field of zero characteristic, this gives a full exceptional collection in the derived equivariant category. We apply our results to particular …
When a reductive group $G$ acts linearly on a complex projective scheme $X$ there is a stratification of $X$ into $G$-invariant locally closed subschemes, with an open stratum $X^{ss}$ formed by the semistable points in the sense of Mumford's geometric invariant theory which has a categorical quotient $X^{ss} \to X//G$. In this article we describe a method for constructing quotients of the unstable strata. As an application, we construct moduli spaces of sheaves of fixed Harder-Narasimhan type with some extra data (an '$n$-rigidification') on a projective base.
For a reductive group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p > 0$ we construct the abelian category of perverse $\mathbb{F}_p$-sheaves on the affine Grassmannian that are equivariant with respect to the action of the positive loop group. We show this is a symmetric monoidal category, and then we apply a Tannakian formalism to show this category is equivalent to the category of representations of a certain affine monoid scheme. We also show that our work provides a geometrization of the inverse of the mod $p$ Satake isomorphism. Along the way we prove that affine Schubert varie…
Using sheaves of A^1-connected components, we prove that the Morel-Voevodsky singular construction on a reductive algebraic group fails to be A^1-local if the group does not satisfy suitable isotropy hypotheses. As a consequence, we show the failure of A^1-invariance of torsors for such groups on smooth affine schemes over infinite perfect fields. We also characterize A^1-connected reductive algebraic groups over a field of characteristic 0.
Let X be a scheme of finite type over a Noetherian base scheme S admitting a dualizing complex, and let U be an open subset whose complement has codimension at least 2. We extend the Deligne-Bezrukavnikov theory of perverse coherent sheaves by showing that a coherent middle extension (or intersection cohomology) functor from perverse sheaves on U to perverse sheaves on X may be defined for a much broader class of perversities than has previously been known. We also introduce a derived category version of the coherent middle extension functor. Under suitable hypotheses, we introduce a construct…
Let X be a smooth projective connected curve over an algebraically closed field k of positive characteristic. Let G be a reductive group over k, γbe a dominant coweight for G, and E be an \ell-adic \check{G}-local system on X, where \check{G} denotes the Langlands dual group. Let \Bun_G be the moduli stack of G-bundles on X. Under some conditions on the triple (G,γ,E) we propose a conjectural construction of a distinguished E-Hecke automorphic sheaf on \Bun_G. We are motivated by a construction of automorphic forms suggested by Ginzburg, Rallis and Soudry in [6,7]. We also generalize Laumon's …
We apply the ideas of derived algebraic geometry and topological field theory to the representation theory of reductive groups. Our focus is the Hecke category of Borel-equivariant D-modules on the flag variety of a complex reductive group G (equivalently, the category of Harish Chandra bimodules of trivial central character) and its monodromic variant. The Hecke category is a categorified analogue of the finite Hecke algebra, which is a finite-dimensional semi-simple symmetric Frobenius algebra. We establish parallel properties of the Hecke category, showing it is a two-dualizable Calabi-Yau …
In this paper we give a geometric version of the Satake isomorphism. Given a connected complex reductive algebraic group, we show that the category of representations of its Langlands dual is naturally equivalent to a certain category of perverse sheaves on the complex affine Grassmannian. We can work with perverse sheaves with coefficients in an arbitrary commutative ring and then we recover the representation theory of the split form of the dual group over the commutative ring.
By the description due to Mukai and Iliev, a smooth prime Fano threefold X of genus 9 is associated to a surface P(V), ruled over a smooth plane quartic Gamma. We use Kuznetsov's integral functor to study rank-2 stable sheaves on X with odd determinant. For each c_2 \geq 7, we prove that a component of their moduli space M_X(2,1,c_2) is birational to a Brill-Noether locus of bundles on Gamma having enough sections when twisted by V. Moreover we prove that M_X(2,1,7) is isomorphic to the blowing-up of the Picard variety Pic^2(Gamma) along the curve parametrizing lines contained in X.
Let $G$ be a reductive group, let $Gr=G((t))/G[[t]]$ be the corresponding affine Grassmannian and let $Fl=G((t))/I$ be the affine flag variety. We construct, following an idea of Belinson, a 1-parametric deformation of the product $Gr\times G/B$ to $Fl$. We use this construction to produce perverse sheaves on $Fl$ which are central with respect to the convolution product from spherical perverse sheaves on $Gr$.
Let G be a connected reductive complex algebraic group. This paper is devoted to the space Z of meromorphic quasimaps from a curve into an affine spherical G-variety X. The space Z may be thought of as an algebraic model for the loop space of X. In this paper, we associate to X a connected reductive complex algebraic subgroup $\check H$ of the dual group $\check G$. The construction of $\check H$ is via Tannakian formalism: we identify a certain tensor category Q(Z) of perverse sheaves on Z with the category of finite-dimensional representations of $\check H$. Combinatorial shadows of the grou…
Let k be an algebraically closed field of characteristic p>>0. Let $X\rightarrow Y$ be a symplectic resolution. There are two questions which motivates this work. One question is a construction of an action of a group on the category $\mathcal{C}:=D^b(Coh(X))$ - The bounded derived category of coherent sheaves of the symplectic resolution X. Second question is understanding equivalence functors between derived categories of coherent sheaves for different symplectic resolutions of Y. Let G/k be a reductive group. In this paper, we construct a local system on a topological space called $V^0_{\ma…
Motivated by constructing moduli spaces of unstable objects, we use new ideas in non-reductive GIT to construct quotients by parabolic group actions. For moduli problems with semistable moduli spaces constructed by reductive GIT, we consider associated instability (or HKKN) stratifications, which are often closed related to Harder-Narasimhan stratifications, and construct quotients of the unstable strata under various stabiliser assumptions by further developing ideas of non-reductive GIT. Our approach is to construct parabolic quotients in stages, in order for the required stabiliser assumpti…
We outline a proof of a geometric version of the Satake isomorphism. Given a connected, complex algebraic reductive group G we show that the tensor category of representations of the dual group $\check G$ is naturally equivalent to a certain category of perverse sheaves on the loop Grassmannian of G. The above result has been announced by Ginsburg in \cite{G} and some of the arguments are borrowed from \cite{G}. However, we use a more "natural" commutativity constraint for the convolution product, due to Drinfeld. Secondly, we give a direct geometric proof that the global cohomology functor is…
In this paper, given a smooth proper scheme X over a p-adic dvr and a p-power torsion etale local system L on it, we study a family of sheaves associated to the cohomology of local relative (Phi-Gamma)-modules of L and their cohomology. As applications we derive descriptions of the etale cohomology groups on the geometric generic fiber of X with values in L, as well as of their classical (Phi-Gamma)-modules, in terms of cohomology of the above mentioned sheaves.
We prove that the perfect loop functor $LX$ of a quasi-projective scheme $X$ over a local non-archimedean field $k$ satisfies arc-descent, strengthening a result of Drinfeld. Then we prove that for an unramified reductive group $G$, the map $LG \rightarrow L(G/B)$ is a $v$-surjection. This gives a mixed characteristic version (for $v$-topology) of an equal characteristic result (in étale topology) of Bouthier--Česnavičius. In the second part of the article, we use the above results to introduce a well-behaved notion of Deligne--Lusztig spaces $X_w(b)$ attached to unramified $p$-adic reductive …
