Let G|V, G connected, reductive over C, be a stable polar representation in the sense of [DK], satisfying some mild additional hypotheses. Given a G-equivariant rank one local system L on the general fiber of the quotient map f : V --> V/G, we compute the Fourier transform of the corresponding nearby cycle sheaf P on the zero-fiber of f. This provides a partial generalization of the results of [Gr1] and [GVX1]. Our main intended application is to the theory of character sheaves for graded Lie algebras over C.
We study certain nearby cycles sheaves on an affine flag manifold which arise naturally in the Beilinson-Gaitsgory deformation of the affine flag manifold to the affine Grassmannian. We study the multiplicity functions we introduced in an earlier paper, which encode the data of the Jordan-Hoelder series. We prove the multiplicity functions are polynomials in q, and we give a sharp bound for their degrees. Our results apply as well to the nearby cycles in the p-adic deformation of Laumon-Haines-Ngo, and also to Wakimoto sheaves.
The first author recently introduced a "nearby cycles formalism" in the framework of chain complexes of parity sheaves. In this paper, we compute this functor in two related settings: (i) affine space, stratified by the action of a torus, and (ii) the global Schubert variety associated to the first fundamental coweight of the group $PGL_n$. The latter is a parity-sheaf analogue of Gaitsgory's central sheaf construction.
In this article we study the perverse sheaf on Drinfeld's compactification obtained by applying the geometric Jacquet functor (alias nearby cycles) to a nondegenerate Whittaker sheaf. Namely, we describe its restrictions along the defect stratification in terms of the Langlands dual Lie algebra, in particular showing that this nearby cycles sheaf is tilting. We also describe the subquotients of the monodromy filtration using the Picard-Lefschetz oscillators introduced by S. Schieder, including a proof that the subquotients are semisimple without reference to any theory of weights. This argumen…
We survey nearby and vanishing cycles for both perverse sheaves and D-modules under analytic setting. Following ideas of A. Beilinson, M. Kashiwara and M. Saito, we explain in detail the proof of the comparison theorem between them in the sense of Riemann-Hilbert correspondence.
Deligne and Kato proved a formula computing the dimension of the nearby cycles complex of an l-adic sheaf on a relative curve over an excellent strictly henselian trait. In this article, we reprove this formula using Abbes-Saito's ramification theory.
The goal of this paper is to motivate a boundedness conjecture on nearby slopes of $\ell$-adic sheaves in positive characteristic, and to prove it for smooth curves. For a constructible $\ell$-adic sheaf, we prove the finiteness of the set of nearby slopes associated to a given morphism. For the constant sheaf, we prove the vanishing of nearby slopes in case of generalized semi-stable reduction.
We propose a new sheaf-theoretical method for the calculation of the monodromy zeta functions of Milnor fibrations. As an application, classical formulas of Kushnirenko and Varchenko etc. concerning polynomials on $\CC^n$ will be generalized to polynomial functions on any toric variety.
Let X be a stratified space on which the Juteau-Mautner-Williamson theory of parity sheaves is available. We develop a "nearby cycles formalism" in the framework of the homotopy category of parity sheaves on X, also known as the mixed modular derived category of X. This construction is expected to have applications in modular geometric representation theory.
In this article, we give a bound for the wild ramification of the monodromy action on the nearby cycles complex of a locally constant étale sheaf on the generic fiber of a smooth scheme over an equal characteristic trait in terms of Abbes and Saito's logarithmic ramification filtration. This provides a positive answer to the main conjecture in Isabel Leal's article "On the ramification of étale cohomology groups" for smooth morphisms in equal characteristic. We also study the ramification along vertical divisors of étale sheaves on relative curves and abelian schemes over a trait.
We prove a purely local form of a result of Saito and Yatagawa. They proved that the characteristic cycle of a constructible étale sheaf is determined by wild ramification of the sheaf along the boundary of a compactification. But they had to consider ramification at all the points of the compactification. We give a pointwise result, that is, we prove that the characteristic cycle of a constructible étale sheaf around a point is determined by wild ramification at the point. The key ingredient is to prove that wild ramification of the stalk of the nearby cycle complex of a constructible étale s…
Using Ram's theory of alcove walks, we give a proof of the Bernstein presentation of the affine Hecke algebra. The method works also in the case of unequal parameters. We also discuss how these results help in studying sheaves of nearby cycles on affine flag manifolds.
We give cases in which nearby cycles commutes with pushforward from sheaves on the moduli stack of shtukas to a product of curves over a finite field. The proof systematically uses the property that taking nearby cycles of Satake sheaves on the Beilinson-Drinfeld Grassmannian with parahoric reduction is a central functor together with a "Zorro's lemma" argument similar to that given by Xue to prove the smoothness of cohomology sheaves at unramified places. As an application, for automorphic forms at the parahoric level, we characterize the image of tame inertia under the Langlands corresponden…
Let $G$ be a reductive group, let $Gr=G((t))/G[[t]]$ be the corresponding affine Grassmannian and let $Fl=G((t))/I$ be the affine flag variety. We construct, following an idea of Belinson, a 1-parametric deformation of the product $Gr\times G/B$ to $Fl$. We use this construction to produce perverse sheaves on $Fl$ which are central with respect to the convolution product from spherical perverse sheaves on $Gr$.
We give a new geometric construction of the big projective module in the principal block of the BGG category $\mathscr{O}$, or rather the corresponding $\mathscr{D}$-module on the flag variety. Namely, given a one-parameter family of nondegenerate additive characters of the unipotent radical of a Borel subgroup which degenerate to the trivial character, there is a corresponding one-parameter family of Whittaker sheaves. We show that the unipotent nearby cycles functor applied to this family yields the big projective $\mathscr{D}$-module.
In this paper we shall generalize the chamber structure of polarizations defined by Qin, and as an application we shall compute the Picard groups of moduli spaces of stable sheaves on a non-rational ruled surface.
Let $H$ and $H'$ be two ample line bundles over a smooth projective surface $X$, and $M(H)$ (resp. $M(H')$) the coarse moduli scheme of $H$-semistable (resp. $H'$-semistable) sheaves of fixed type $(r,c_1,c_2)$. We construct a sequence of blowing-ups which describes how $M(H)$ differs from $M(H')$ not only when $r=2$ but also when $r$ is arbitrary. Means we here utilize are elementary transforms and the notion of a sheaf with flag.
Let $H$ and $H'$ be two ample line bundles over a nonsingular projective surface $X$, and $M(H)$ (resp. $M(H')$) the coarse moduli scheme of $H$-semistable (resp. $H'$-semistable) sheaves of fixed type $(r=2,c_1,c_2)$. In a moduli-theoretic way that comes from elementary transforms, we connect $M(H)$ and $M(H')$ by a sequence of blowing-ups when walls separating $H$ and $H'$ are not necessarily good. As an application, we also consider the polarization change problem of Donaldson polynomials.
We introduce a notion of compatibility for families $(\mathcal{F}_{\ell})_{\ell}$ of bounded constructible $\ell$-adic complexes of étale sheaves on schemes. For schemes of finite type over a field, this notion is preserved by the usual six functors. We prove that the compatibility of a family is preserved by the nearby cycles functor and by the linearized $\varepsilon$-factors introduced recently by the author. We establish independence of $\ell$ for the characteristic cycles and characteristic $\varepsilon$-cycles of compatible families.
We construct the so-called polar complex for an arbitrary locally free sheaf on a smooth variety over a field of characteristic zero. This complex is built from logarithmic forms on all irreducible subvarieties with values in a locally free sheaf. We prove that cohomology groups of the polar complex are canonically isomorphic to the cohomology groups of the locally free sheaf. Relations of the polar complex with Rost's cycle modules, algebraic cycles, Cousin complex, and adelic complex are discussed. In particular, the polar complex is a subcomplex in the Cousin complex. One can say that the p…
Let $X$ be a Hirzebruch surface, and let $H$ be any ample divisor. In this paper, we algorithmically determine when the moduli space of semistable sheaves $M_{X,H}(r,c_1,c_2)$ is nonempty. Our algorithm relies on certain stacks of prioritary sheaves. We first solve the existence problem for these stacks and then algorithmically determine the Harder-Narasimhan filtration of the general sheaf in the stack. In particular, semistable sheaves exist if and only if the Harder-Narasimhan filtration has length one. We then study sharp Bogomolov inequalities $Δ\geq δ_H(c_1/r)$ for the discriminants of s…
We extend results on generic strange duality for K3 surfaces by showing that the proposed isomorphism holds over an entire Noether-Lefschetz divisor in the moduli space of quasipolarized K3s. We interpret the statement globally as an isomorphism of sheaves over this divisor, and also describe the global construction over the space of polarized K3s.
We study holonomic D-modules on SL_n(C)xC^n, called mirabolic modules, analogous to Lusztig's character sheaves. We describe the supports of simple mirabolic modules. We show that a mirabolic module is killed by the functor of Hamiltonian reduction from the category of mirabolic modules to the category of representations of the trigonometric Cherednik algebra if and only if the characteristic variety of the module is contained in the unstable locus. We introduce an analogue of the Verdier specialization functor for representations of Cherednik algebras which agrees, on category O, with the res…
We consider a notion of stability for sheaves, which we call multi-Gieseker stability that depends on several ample polarisations $L_1, \dots, L_N$ and on an additional parameter $σ\in \mathbb{Q}_{\geq 0}^N\setminus\{0\}$. The set of semi stable sheaves admits a projective moduli space $\mathcal M_σ$. We prove that given a finite collection of parameters $σ$, there exists a sheaf- and representation-theoretically defined master space $Y$ such that each corresponding moduli space is obtained from $Y$ as a Geometric Invariant Theory (GIT) quotient. In particular, any two such spaces are related …
Using the Langlands-Kottwitz paradigm, we compute the trace of Frobenius composed with Hecke operators on the cohomology of nearby cycles, at places of parahoric reduction, of perverse sheaves on certain moduli stacks of shtukas. Following an argument of Ngo, we then use this to give a geometric proof of a base change fundamental lemma for parahoric Hecke algebras for GL_n over local function fields. This generalizes a theorem of Ngo, who proved the base change fundamental lemma for spherical Hecke algebras for GL_n over local function fields, and extends to positive characteristic (for GL_n) …
For a constructible étale sheaf on a smooth variety of positive characteristic ramified along an effective divisor, the largest slope in Abbes and Saito's ramification theory of the sheaf gives a divisor with rational coefficients called the conductor divisor. In this article, we prove decreasing properties of the conductor divisor after pull-backs. The main ingredient behind is the construction of étale sheaves with pure ramifications. As applications, we first prove a lower semi-continuity property for conductors of étale sheaves on relative curves in the equal characteristic case, which sup…
For (X,L) a polarized toric variety and G a torus of automorphisms of (X,L), denote by Y the GIT quotient X/G. We define a family of fully faithful functors from the category of torus equivariant reflexive sheaves on Y to the category of torus equivariant reflexive sheaves on X. We show, under a genericity assumption on G, that slope stability is preserved by these functors if and only if the pair ((X, L), G) satisfies a combinatorial criterion. As an application, when (X,L) is a polarized toric orbifold of dimension n, we relate stable equivariant reflexive sheaves on (X, L) to stable equivar…
On a Weierstraß elliptic surface $X$, we define a `limit' of Bridgeland stability conditions, denoted as $Z^l$-stability, by moving the polarisation towards the fiber direction in the ample cone while keeping the volume of the polarisation fixed. We describe conditions under which a slope stable torsion-free sheaf is taken by a Fourier-Mukai transform to a $Z^l$-stable object, and describe a modification upon which a $Z^l$-semistable object is taken by the inverse Fourier-Mukai transform to a slope semistable torsion-free sheaf. We also study wall-crossing for Bridgeland stability, and show th…
We prove a finiteness theorem and a comparison theorem in the theory of étale cohomology of rigid analytic varieties. By a result of Huber, for a quasi-compact separated morphism of rigid analytic varieties with target being of dimension $\le1$, the compactly supported higher direct image preserves quasi-constructibility. Though the analogous statement for morphisms with higher dimensional target fails in general, we prove that, in the algebraizable case, it holds after replacing the target with a modification. We deduce it from a known finiteness result in the theory of nearby cycles over gen…
Let $X$ be the blow-up of $\mathbb{P}^2$ along $m$ general points, and $A=H-\sum \varepsilon_iE_i$ be a generic polarization with $0<\varepsilon_i\ll1$. We classify the Chern characters which satisfy the weak Brill-Noether property, i.e. a general sheaf in $M_A({\bf{v}})$, the moduli space of slope stable sheaves with Chern character ${\bf{v}}$, has at most one non-zero cohomology. We further give a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of stable sheaves. Our strategy is to specialize to the case when the $m$ points are collinear.
Let S be a smooth complex projective surface equipped with a Poisson structure s and also a polarization H. The moduli space M_H(S,P) of stable sheaves on S having a fixed Hilbert polynomial P of degree one has a natural Poisson structure given by s, studied by Tyurin and Bottacin. We prove that the symplectic leaves of M_H(S,P) are the fibers of the natural map from it to the symmetric power of the effective divisor on S given by the singular locus of s.
Let $X$ be a projective K3 surface with generic polarization $\cO_X(1)$ and let $M_c=M(2,0,c)$ be the moduli space of semistable torsion-free sheaves on $X$ of rank 2, with Chern classes $c_1=0$ and $c_2=c$. When $c=2n\ge 4$ is even, $M_c$ is a singular projective variety. We show that there is no symplectic desingularization of $M_{2n}$ if $\frac{n a_n}{2n-3}$ is not an integer where $a_n$ is the Euler number of the Hilbert scheme $X^{[n]}$ of $n$ points in $X$.
Let X be a normal projective variety, and let A be an ample Cartier divisor on X. We prove that the twisted cotangent sheaf $Ω_X \otimes A$ is generically nef with respect to the polarisation A unless X is a projective space. As an application we prove a Kobayashi-Ochiai theorem for foliations: if $F \subsetneq T_X$ is a foliation of rank r such that $det F \equiv i_F A$, then we have $i_F \leq r$.
We provide a stacky fan description of the total space of certain split vector bundles, as well as their projectivization, over toric Deligne-Mumford stacks. We then specialize to the case of Hirzebruch orbifold $\mathcal{H}_{r}^{ab}$ obtained by projectivizing $\mathcal{O} \oplus \mathcal{O}(r)$ over the weighted projective line $\mathbb{P}(a,b)$. Next, we give a combinatorial description of toric sheaves on $\mathcal{H}_{r}^{ab}$ and investigate their basic properties. With fixed choice of polarization and a generating sheaf, we describe the fixed point locus of the moduli scheme of $μ$-stab…
This paper proves that the nearby cycles complexes on a certain family of PEL local models are central with respect to the convolution product of sheaves on the corresponding affine flag varieties. As a corollary, the semisimple trace functions defined using the action of Frobenius on those nearby cycles complexes are, via the sheaf-function dictionary, in the centers of the corresponding Iwahori-Hecke algebras. This is commonly referred to as Kottwitz's Conjecture. The reductive groups associated to the PEL local models under consideration are unramified unitary similitude groups with even di…
Let (X,H) be a polarized, smooth, complex projective surface, and let v be a Chern character on X with positive rank and sufficiently large discriminant. In this paper, we compute the Gieseker wall for v in a slice of the stability manifold of X. We construct explicit curves parameterizing non-isomorphic Gieseker stable sheaves that become S-equivalent along the wall. As a corollary, we conclude that if there are no strictly semistable sheaves of character v, the Bayer-Macri divisor associated to the wall is a boundary nef divisor on the moduli space of sheaves M_H(v). We recover previous resu…
We investigate properties and describe examples of tilt-stable objects on a smooth complex projective threefold. We give a structure theorem on slope semistable sheaves of vanishing discriminant, and describe certain Chern classes for which every slope semistable sheaf yields a Bridgeland semistable object of maximal phase. Then, we study tilt stability as the polarisation $ω$ gets large, and give sufficient conditions for tilt-stability of sheaves of the following two forms: 1) twists of ideal sheaves or 2) torsion-free sheaves whose first Chern class is twice a minimum possible value.
In this paper we give an introduction to our recent work on characteristic classes of complex hypersurfaces based on some talks given at conferences in Strasbourg, Oberwolfach and Kagoshima. We explain the relation between nearby cycles for constructible functions or sheaves as well as for (relative) Grothendieck groups of algebraic varieties and mixed Hodge modules, and the specialization of characteristic classes of singular spaces like the Chern-, Todd-, Hirzebruch- and motivic Chern-classes. As an application we get a description of the differences between the corresponding virtual and fun…
In this paper we study deformation classes of moduli spaces of sheaves on a projective K3 surface. More precisely, let $(S1,H1)$ and $(S2,H2)$ be two polarized K3 surfaces, $m\in\mathbb{N}$, and for $i=1,2$ let $mv_{i}$ be a Mukai vector on $S_{i}$ such that $H_{i}$ is $mv_{i}-$generic. Moreover, suppose that the moduli spaces $M_{mv_{1}}(S_{1},H_{1})$ of $H_{1}-$semistable sheaves on $S_{1}$ of Mukai vector $mv_{1}$ and $M_{mv_{2}}(S_{2},H_{2})$ of $H_{2}-$semistable sheaves on $S_{2}$ with Mukai vector $mv_{2}$, have the same dimension. The aim of this paper is to prove that $M_{mv_{1}}(S_{1…
Let $X$ be a complex projective manifold. Fix two ample line bundles $H_0$ and $H_1$ on $X$. It is the aim of this note to study the variation of the moduli spaces of Gieseker semistable sheaves for polarizations lying in the cone spanned by $H_0$ and $H_1$. We attempt a new definition of walls which naturally describes the behaviour of Gieseker semistability. By means of an example, we establish the possibility of non-rational walls which is a substantially new phenomenon compared to the surface case. Using the approach of Ellingsrud and Goettsche via parabolic sheaves, we were able to show t…
On a Weierstraß elliptic surface $X$, we define a `limit' of Bridgeland stability conditions, denoted $Z^l$-stability, by varying the polarisation in the definition of Bridgeland stability along a curve in the ample cone of $X$. We show that a slope stable torsion-free sheaf of positive (twisted) degree or a slope stable locally free sheaf is taken by a Fourier-Mukai transform on $D^b(X)$ to a $Z^l$-stable object, while a $Z^l$-semistable object of nonzero fiber degree can be modified so that its inverse Fourier-Mukai transform is a slope semistable torsion-free sheaf.
