These are expanded notes on a lecture of the same title at the 2015 AMS summer institute in algebraic geometry. We give an introduction and overview of the "beyond geometric invariant theory" program for analyzing moduli problems in algebraic geometry. We discuss methods for analyzing stability in general moduli problems, focusing on the moduli of coherent sheaves on a smooth projective scheme as a toy example. We describe several applications: a general structure theorem for the derived category of coherent sheaves on an algebraic stack; some results on the topology of moduli stacks; and a "virtual non-abelian localization formula" in K-theory. We also propose a generalization of toric geometry to arbitrary compactifications of homogeneous spaces for algebraic groups, and formulate a conjecture on the Hodge theory of algebraic-symplectic stacks.
This note extends some recent results on the derived category of a geometric invariant theory quotient to the setting of derived algebraic geometry. Our main result is a structure theorem for the derived category of a derived local quotient stack which admits a stratification of the kind arising in geometric invariant theory. The use of derived algebraic geometry leads to results with pleasingly few hypotheses, even when the stack is not smooth. Using the same methods, we establish a "virtual non-abelian localization theorem" which is a K-theoretic analog of the virtual localization theorem in…
For a complex reductive group G acting linearly on a complex affine space V with respect to a character, we show two stratifications of V associated to this action (and a choice of invariant inner product on the Lie algebra of the maximal compact subgroup of G) coincide. The first is Hesselink's stratification by adapted 1-parameter subgroups and the second is the Morse theoretic stratification associated to the norm square of the moment map. We also give a proof of a version of the Kempf-Ness theorem which states that the GIT quotient is homeomorphic to the symplectic reduction (both taken wi…
We study the degree of the Gauss map of the theta divisor of principally polarised complex abelian varieties. We use this to obtain a bound on the multiplicity of the theta divisor along irreducible components of its singular locus, and apply this bound in examples, and to understand the local structure of isolated singular points. We further define a stratification of the moduli space of ppav's by the degree of the Gauss map. In dimension four, we show that this stratification gives a weak solution of the Schottky problem, and we conjecture that this is true in any dimension.
In this paper we are interested in the geometric local theta correspondence at the Iwahori level for dual reductive pairs $(G,H)$ of type II over a non-Archimedean field of characteristic $p\neq 2$ in the framework of the geometric Langlands program. We consider the geometric version of the $I_{H}\times I_{G}$-invariants of the Weil representation $\mathcal{S}^{I_{H}\times I_{G}}$ as a bimodule under the of action Iwahori-Hecke algebras $\mathcal{H}_{I_{G}}$ and $\mathcal{H}_{I_{H}}$ and we give some partial geometric description of the corresponding category under the action of Hecke functors…
To any closed subvariety $Y$ of a complex abelian variety one can attach a reductive algebraic group $G$ which is determined by the decomposition of the convolution powers of $Y$ via a certain Tannakian formalism. For a theta divisor $Y$ on a principally polarized abelian variety, this group $G$ provides a new invariant that naturally endows the moduli space $A_g$ of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension $g$ with a finite constructible stratification. We determine $G$ for a generic principally polarized abelian variety, and for $g=4$ we show that the stratification detects the l…
Motivated by constructing moduli spaces of unstable objects, we use new ideas in non-reductive GIT to construct quotients by parabolic group actions. For moduli problems with semistable moduli spaces constructed by reductive GIT, we consider associated instability (or HKKN) stratifications, which are often closed related to Harder-Narasimhan stratifications, and construct quotients of the unstable strata under various stabiliser assumptions by further developing ideas of non-reductive GIT. Our approach is to construct parabolic quotients in stages, in order for the required stabiliser assumpti…
Let X be any nonsingular complex projective variety on which a complex reductive group G acts linearly, and let X^{ss} and X^s be the sets of semistable and stable points of X in the sense of Mumford's geometric invariant theory. Then X has a G-equivariantly perfect stratification by locally closed nonsingular G-invariant subvarieties with X^{ss} as an open stratum, which can be obtained as the Morse stratification of the normsquare of a moment map for the action of a maximal compact subgroup K of G. In this note this stratification is refined to obtain stratifications of X by locally closed n…
We use Drinfeld's relative compactifications and the Tannakian viewpoint on principal bundles to construct the Harder-Narasimhan stratification of the moduli stack Bun_G of G-bundles on an algebraic curve in arbitrary characteristic, generalizing the stratification for G=GL_n due to Harder and Narasimhan to the case of an arbitrary reductive group G. To establish the stratification on the set-theoretic level, we exploit a Tannakian interpretation of the Bruhat decomposition and give a new and purely geometric proof of the existence and uniqueness of the canonical reduction in arbitrary charact…
Let G be a complex reductive group and let C be a smooth curve of genus at least one. We prove a converse to a theorem of Atiyah-Bott concerning the stratification of the space of holomorphic G-bundles on C. In case the genus of C is one, we establish that one has a stratification in the strong sense. The paper concludes with a characterization of the minimally unstable strata in case G is simple.
We analyze the stratification of the moduli space S_g of spin curves of genus g given by the dimension of the theta-characteristic. Using the relation between gaussian maps and the strata S_g^r, we construct "regular" components of S_g^r having expected codimension r(r+1)/2 inside S_g. We also relate moduli spaces of pointed curves with a moving spin structure to the classical Gieseker-Petri loci in M_g. We show that the locus of curves for which the Gieseker-Petri theorem fails for a pencil is always a divisor on M_g. Finally, we give a sufficient criterion for the injectivity of Gaussian map…
We study a compactification of the moduli space of theta characteristics, giving a modular interpretation of the geometric points and describing the boundary stratification. This space is different from the moduli space of spin curves. The modular description and the boundary stratification of the new compactification are encoded by a tropical moduli space. We show that this tropical moduli space is a refinement of the moduli space of spin tropical curves. We describe explicitly the induced decomposition of its cones.
We consider a reductive dual pair (G, G') in the stable range with G' the smaller member and of Hermitian symmetric type. We study the theta lifting of nilpotent K'_C-orbits, where K' is a maximal compact subgroup of G' and we describe the precise K_C-module structure of the regular function ring of the closure of the lifted nilpotent orbit of the symmetric pair (G, K). As an application, we prove sphericality and normality of the closure of certain nilpotent K_C-orbits obtained in this way. We also give integral formulas for their degrees.
We show that the degree of Gauss maps on abelian varieties is semicontinuous in families, and we study its jump loci. As an application we obtain that in the case of theta divisors this degree answers the Schottky problem. Our proof computes the degree of Gauss maps by specialization of Lagrangian cycles on the cotangent bundle. We also get similar results for the intersection cohomology of varieties with a finite morphism to an abelian variety; it follows that many components of Andreotti-Mayer loci, including the Schottky locus, are part of the stratification of the moduli space of ppav's de…
For complex connected, reductive, affine, algebraic groups $G$, we give a Lie-theoretic characterization of the semistability of principal $G$-co-Higgs bundles on the complex projective line $\mathbb{P}^1$ in terms of the simple roots of a Borel subgroup of $G$. We describe a stratification of the moduli space in terms of the Harder-Narasimhan type of the underlying bundle.
This is a survey of the rationality problem in invariant theory. It also contains some new results, in particular in Chapter 2 on moduli spaces of plane curves with a theta-characteristic, and a detailed account of the relation of the Hesselink stratification of the Hilbert nullcone to the rationality problem, with an application to the rationality of the moduli space of plane curves of degree 34.
Recent results in geometric invariant theory (GIT) for non-reductive linear algebraic group actions allow us to stratify quotient stacks of the form [X/H], where X is a projective scheme and H is a linear algebraic group with internally graded unipotent radical acting linearly on X, in such a way that each stratum [S/H] has a geometric quotient S/H. This leads to stratifications of moduli stacks (for example, sheaves over a projective scheme) such that each stratum has a coarse moduli space.
We present a systematic approach to studying the geometric aspects of Vinberg theta-representations. The main idea is to use the Borel-Weil construction for representations of reductive groups as sections of homogeneous bundles on homogeneous spaces, and then to study degeneracy loci of these vector bundles. Our main technical tool is to use free resolutions as an "enhanced" version of degeneracy loci formulas. We illustrate our approach on several examples and show how they are connected to moduli spaces of Abelian varieties. To make the article accessible to both algebraists and geometers, w…
When a reductive group $G$ acts linearly on a complex projective scheme $X$ there is a stratification of $X$ into $G$-invariant locally closed subschemes, with an open stratum $X^{ss}$ formed by the semistable points in the sense of Mumford's geometric invariant theory which has a categorical quotient $X^{ss} \to X//G$. In this article we describe a method for constructing quotients of the unstable strata. As an application, we construct moduli spaces of sheaves of fixed Harder-Narasimhan type with some extra data (an '$n$-rigidification') on a projective base.
We show that for an algebraic reductive group $G$, the partition of a double Schubert cell in the flag variety $G/B$ defined by Deodhar, and coming from a Bialynicki-Birula decomposition, is not a stratification in general. We give a counterexample for a group of type B$_n$, where the closure of some specific cell of dimension $2n$ has a non-trivial intersection with a cell of dimension $3n-3$
We establish an algebraic approach to prove the properness of moduli spaces of K-polystable Fano varieties and reduce the problem to a conjecture on destabilizations of K-unstable Fano varieties. Specifically, we prove that if the stability threshold of every K-unstable Fano variety is computed by a divisorial valuation, then such K-moduli spaces are proper. The argument relies on studying certain optimal destabilizing test configurations and constructing a Theta-stratification on the moduli stack of Fano varieties.
