A discussion of torsion of Riemannian G-structures leads to a survey of contributions of Alfred Gray and others on almost Hermitian manifolds, G_2-manifolds, curvature identities, volume expansions, plotting geodesics, and the geometry of nilmanifolds. The paper concludes with a new example of a compact 8-manifold with a quaternionic 4-form that is closed but not parallel.
We show a Lichnerowicz-Obata type estimate for the first eigenvalue of the Laplacian of $n$-dimensional closed Riemannian manifolds with an almost parallel $p$-form ($2\leq p \leq n/2$) in $L^2$-sense, and give an almost decomposition result of the manifold under some pinching conditions when $2\leq p<n/2$.
In this article, we determine the seven-dimensional almost Abelian Lie algebras which admit calibrated or parallel G_2-/G_2^*-structures. Along the way, we show that certain well-established curvature restrictions for calibrated and parallel G_2-structures are not valid in the G_2^* case. In more detail, we provide the first example of a Ricci-flat calibrated G_2^*-structure on a compact manifold whose holonomy is not contained in G_2^*. Moreover, we get examples of non-flat parallel G_2^*-structures on almost Abelian Lie algebras g. We give a full classification of these G_2^*-structures if g…
The characteristic connection of an almost hermitian structure is a hermitian connection with totally skew-symmetric torsion. The case of parallel torsion in dimension six is of particular interest. In this work, we give a full classification of the algebraic types of the torsion form, and, based on this, undertake a systematic investigation into the possible geometries. Numerous naturally reductive spaces are constructed and classified as well as examples on nilmanifolds given.
In the present work we consider an almost complex manifold with Norden metric (i.e. a metric with respect to which the almost complex structure is an antiisometry). On such a manifold we study a linear connection preserving the almost complex structure and the metric and having a totally skew-symmetric torsion tensor. We consider the case when the manifold admits a connection with parallel totally skew-symmetric torsion and the case when such connection has a Kaehler curvature tensor. We get necessary and sufficient conditions for an isotropic Kaehler manifold with Norden metric.
In this paper we study slant null curves with respect to the original parameter on 3-dimensional normal almost contact B-metric manifolds with parallel Reeb vector field. We prove that for non-geodesic such curves there exists a unique Frenet frame for which the original parameter is distinguished. Moreover, we obtain a necessary condition this Frenet frame to be a Cartan Frenet frame with respect to the original parameter. Examples of the considered curves are constructed.
Almost hypercomplex manifolds with Hermitian and anti-Hermitian metrics are considered. A linear connection $D$ is introduced such that the structure of these manifolds is parallel with respect to D. Of special interest is the class of the locally conformally equivalent manifolds of the manifolds with covariantly constant almost complex structures and the case when the torsion of D is D-parallel. Curvature properties of these manifolds are studied. An example of 4-dimensional manifolds in the considered basic class is constructed and characterized.
Let $\widetilde{J}$ be the canonical para-complex structure on $\mathbb{R}^{2n+2}\simeq\widetilde{\mathbb{C}}^{n+1}$. We study real affine hypersurfaces $f\colon M\rightarrow \widetilde{\mathbb{C}}^{n+1}$ with a $\widetilde{J}$-tangent transversal vector field. Such vector field induces in a natural way an almost paracontact structure ${(φ,ξ,η)}$ on $M$ as well as the affine connection $\nabla$. In this paper we give the classification of hypersurfaces with the property that $φ$ or $η$ is parallel relative to the connection $\nabla$. Moreover, we show that if $\nablaφ=0$ (respectively $\nablaη…
It is established that the existence of non-isotropic vector field which Jacobi operator of maximal rank is an obstacle for the existence of non-trivial second-order symmetric parallel tensor field. In turns out that presence of such obstacle follows that manifold as pseudo-Riemannian manifold is locally non-reducible. In particular result can be applied directly to known classes of almost (para-) contact metric manifolds when considered Jacobi operator of characteristic vector field has maximal rank. There is effective algorithmic procedure which resolves the problem of existence of such vect…
We study almost Kähler manifolds whose curvature tensor satisfies the second curvature condition of Gray (shortly ${\cal{AK}}_2$). This condition is interpreted in terms of the first canonical Hermitian connection. It turns out that this condition forces the torsion of this connection to be parallel in directions orthogonal to the Kähler nullity of the almost complex structure. We prove a local structure result for ${\cal{AK}}_2$ manifolds, showing that the basic pieces are manifolds with parallel torsion and special almost Kähler manifolds, a class generalizing, to some algebraic extent, the …
Reflection in a line in Euclidean 3-space defines an almost paracomplex structure on the space of all oriented lines, isometric with respect to the canonical neutral Kaehler metric. Beyond Euclidean 3-space, the space of oriented geodesics of any real 3-dimensional space form admits both isometric and anti-isometric paracomplex structures. This paper considers the existence or otherwise of isometric and anti-isometric almost paracomplex structures $j$ on a pseudo-Riemannian 4-manifold $(M,g)$, such that $j$ is parallel with respect to the Levi-Civita connection of $g$. It is shown that if an i…
We classify locally homogeneous quasi-Sasakian manifolds in dimension five that admit a parallel spinor $ψ$ of algebraic type $F \cdot ψ= 0$ with respect to the unique connection $\nabla$ preserving the quasi-Sasakian structure and with totally skew-symmetric torsion. We introduce a certain conformal transformation of almost contact metric manifolds and discuss a link between them and the dilation function in 5-dimensional string theory. We find natural conditions implying conformal invariances of parallel spinors. We present topological obstructions to the existence of parallel spinors in the…
The subject of investigations are the almost hypercomplex manifolds with Hermitian and anti-Hermitian (Norden) metrics. A linear connection D is introduced such that the structure of these manifolds is parallel with respect to D and its torsion is totally skew-symmetric. The class of the nearly Kaehler manifolds with respect to the first almost complex structure is of special interest. It is proved that D has a D-parallel torsion and is weak if it is not flat. Some curvature properties of these manifolds are studied.
An almost complex manifolds $(M^4,J)$ of real dimension 4 with non-degenerate torsion bundle admit a double absolute parallelism and it is provided the classification of homogeneous $(M^4,J)$ having an associated non-solvable Lie algebra. We extend such a classification to the analysis of the manifolds having an associated solvable Lie algebra, up-to-coverings. Moreover, for homogeneous $(M^4,J)$ we provide examples with connected and non-connected double covering, thus proving that in general the double absolute parallelism is not the restriction of two absolute parallelisms. Furthermore, it …
In this work, almost product and almost golden structures are studied. Conditions for those structures being Integrable and parallel are investigated. Also harmonicity of a map between almost pruduct or almost golden manifolds with pure or hyperbolic metric is discussed under certain conditions.
Ricci-like solitons on Sasaki-like almost contact B-metric manifolds are the object of study. Cases, where the potential of the Ricci-like soliton is the Reeb vector field or pointwise collinear to it, are considered. In the former case, the properties for a parallel or recurrent Ricci-tensor are studied. In the latter case, it is shown that the potential of the considered Ricci-like soliton has a constant length and the manifold is $η$-Einstein. Other curvature conditions are also found, which imply that the main metric is Einstein. After that, some results are obtained for a parallel symmetr…
We study special almost Kaehler manifolds whose curvature tensor satisfies the second curvature condition of Gray. It is shown that for such manifolds, the torsion of the first canonical Hermitian is parallel. This enables us to show that every AK_2-manifold has parallel torsion. Some applications of this result, concerning the existence of orthogonal almost Kaehler structures on spaces of constant curvature are given.
We study almost Kaehler manifolds whose curvature tensor satisfies the third curvature condition of Gray. We show that the study of manifolds within this class reduces to the study of a subclass having the property that the torsion of the first canonical Hermitian connection has the simplest possible algebraic form. This allows to understand the structure of the Kaehler nullity of an almost Kaehler manifold with parallel torsion.
We describe all almost contact metric, almost hermitian and $G_2$-structures admitting a connection with totally skew-symmetric torsion tensor, and prove that there exists at most one such connection. We investigate its torsion form, its Ricci tensor, the Dirac operator and the $\nabla$-parallel spinors. In particular, we obtain solutions of the type II string in dimension $n=5,6$ and 7.
By a theorem of Kirchhoff if the six sphere admits an almost complex structure then the seven sphere is parallelizable, more crucial, he exhibited an explicit global frame constructed out of the given almost complex structure. This result implicitly equips the seven sphere with a definite H-space multiplication. We propose to address the existence problem of complex structures on the six sphere studying the associated parallelism-multiplications on the seven sphere. We ask to what extent the integrability condition of the almost complex structure amounts to the constancy of the structure funct…
Among other results, a compact almost Kähler manifold is proved to be Kähler if the Ricci tensor is semi-negative and its length coincides with that of the star Ricci tensor or if the Ricci tensor is semi-positive and its first order covariant derivatives are Hermitian. Moreover, it is shown that there are no compact almost Kähler manifolds with harmonic Weyl tensor and non-parallel semi-positive Ricci tensor. Stronger results are obtained in dimension 4.
Let M be a smooth compact manifold without boundary. We consider two smooth Sub-Semi-Riemannian metrics on M. Under suitable conditions, we show that they are almost conformally isometric in an Lp sense. Assume also that M carries a Riemannian metric with parallel Ricci curvature. Then an equation of Ricci type, is in some sense solvable, without assuming any closeness near a special metric.
A generalization of Ricci-like solitons with torse-forming potential, which is a constant multiple of the Reeb vector field, is studied. The conditions under which these solitons are equivalent to almost Einstein-like metrics are given. Some results are obtained for a parallel symmetric second-order covariant tensor. Finally, an explicit example of an arbitrary dimension is given and some of the results are illustrated.
A natural connection with totally skew-symmetric torsion on almost contact manifolds with B-metric is constructed. The class of these manifolds, where the considered connection exists, is determined. Some curvature properties for this connection, when the corresponding curvature tensor has the properties of the curvature tensor for the Levi-Civita connection and the torsion tensor is parallel, are obtained.
We study 4-dimensional second-Chern-Einstein almost-Hermitian manifolds. In the compact case, we observe that under a certain hypothesis the Riemannian dual of the Lee form is a Killing vector field. We use that observation to describe 4-dimensional compact second-Chern-Einstein locally conformally symplectic manifolds and we give some examples of such manifolds. Finally, we study the second-Chern-Einstein problem on unimodular almost-abelian Lie algebras, classifying those that admit a left-invariant second-Chern-Einstein metric with a parallel non-zero Lee form.
On 5-dimensional almost contact B-metric manifolds, the form of any Kähler-type tensor (i.e. a tensor satisfying the properties of the curvature tensor of the Levi-Civita connection in the special class of the parallel structures on the manifold) is determined. The associated 1-forms are derived by the scalar curvatures of the Kähler-type tensor for the canonical connection on the manifolds from the main classes with closed 1-forms.
We study $\mathcal D$-homothetic deformations of almost $α$-Kenmotsu structures. We characterize almost contact metric manifolds which are $CR$-integrable almost $α$-Kenmotsu manifolds, through the existence of a canonical linear connection, invariant under $\mathcal D$-homothetic deformations. If the canonical connection associated to the structure $(φ,ξ,η,g)$ has parallel torsion and curvature, then the local geometry is completely determined by the dimension of the manifold and the spectrum of the operator $h'$ defined by $2αh'=({\mathcal L}_ξφ)\circφ$. In particular, the manifold is locall…
We study the geometry of almost contact pseudo-metric manifolds in terms of tensor fields $h:=\frac{1}{2}£_ξφ$ and $\ell := R(\cdot,ξ)ξ$, emphasizing analogies and differences with respect to the contact metric case. Certain identities involving $ξ$-sectional curvatures are obtained. We establish necessary and sufficient condition for a nondegenerate almost $CR$ structure $(\mathcal{H}(M), J, θ)$ corresponding to almost contact pseudo-metric manifold $M$ to be $CR$ manifold. Finally, we prove that a contact pseudo-metric manifold $(M,φ,ξ,η,g)$ is Sasakian if and only if the corresponding nonde…
A Riemannian or pseudo-Riemannian (or conformal) structure is conformally Einstein if and only if there is a suitably generic parallel section of a certain vector bundle -- the so-called standard conformal tractor bundle. We show that this characterisation leads to a systematic approach to constructing obstructions to conformally Einstein metrics. Relaxing the requirement that the parallel tractor field be generic gives a natural generalisation of the Einstein equations.
A Theorem of Kirichenko states that the torsion 3-form of the characteristic connection of a nearly Kähler manifold is parallel. On the other side, any almost hermitian manifold of type $\mathrm{G}_1$ admits a unique connection with totally skew symmetric torsion. In dimension six, we generalize Kirichenko's Theorem and we describe almost hermitian $\mathrm{G}_1$-manifolds with parallel torsion form. In particular, among them there are only two types of $\mathcal{W}_3$-manifolds with a non-abelian holonomy group, namely twistor spaces of 4-dimensional self-dual Einstein manifolds and the invar…
Manifolds endowed with three foliations pairwise transversal are known as 3-webs. Equivalently, they can be algebraically defined as biparacomplex or complex product manifolds, i.e., manifolds endowed with three tensor fields of type $(1,1)$, $F$, $P$ and $J=F \circ P$, where the two first are product and the third one is complex, and they mutually anti-commute. In this case, it is well known that there exists a unique torsion-free connection parallelizing the structure. In the present paper, we study connections attached to non-integrable almost biparacomplex manifolds.

For a Riemannian $G$-structure, we compute the divergence of the vector field induced by the intrinsic torsion. Applying the Stokes theorem, we obtain the integral formula on a closed oriented Riemannian manifold, which we interpret in certain cases. We focus on almost harmitian and almost contact metric structures.
We consider an almost complex manifold with Norden metric (i. e. a metric with respect to which the almost complex structure is an anti-isometry). On such a manifold we study a linear connection preserving the almost complex structure and the metric and having a totally skew symmetric torsion tensor (i. e. a 3-form). We prove that if a non-Kaehler almost complex manifold with Norden metric admits such connection then the manifold is quasi-Kaehlerian (i. e. has non-integrable almost complex structure). We prove that this connection is unique, determine its form, and construct an example of it o…
Let $F^{2n}=(M,M',F^{\ast})$ be an even-dimensional pseudo-Finsler manifold. We construct an almost hypercomplex structure on any chart domain of a certain atlas of $M'$ by using a considered non-linear connection. Then by using the almost hypercomplex structure we define two new families of Finsler connections. Also we show that for any Finsler connection $\nabla$ there exists a linear connection $D$ such that the local almost hypercomplex structure is parallel with respect to it.
We study almost contact metric structures induced by 2-fold vector cross products on manifolds with $G_2$ structures. We get some results on possible classes of almost contact metric structures. Finally we give examples.
We investigate 7 dimensional almost para-contact metric structures induced by the 3-forms of $G_2^*$ Structures. We calculate the projections that determine to which class the almost para-contact structure belongs, by using the properties of $G_2^*$ Structures.
We study almost Hermitian structures admitting a Hermitian connexion with totally skew-symmetric torsion or equivalently, those almost Hermitian structures with totally skew-symmetric Nijenhuis tensor. We investigate up to what extent the Nijenhuis tensor fails to be parallel with respect to the characteristic connexion. This is naturally described by means of an extension of the notion of Killing form to almost Hermitian geometry. In this context, we also make an essentially self-contained survey of nearly-Kaehler geometry, but from the perspective of non-integrable holonomy systems.
Relations between conjugate connections with respect to the pair of Norden metrics and to the almost complex structure on almost Norden manifolds are studied. Conjugate connections of the Levi-Civita connections induced by the Norden metrics are obtained. Statistical structures on almost Norden manifolds are considered.
In this paper we study almost complex and almost para-complex Cayley structures on six-dimensional pseudo-Riemannian spheres in the space of purely imaginary octaves of the split Cayley algebra $\mathbf{Ca}'$. It is shown that the Cayley structures are non-integrable, their basic geometric characteristics are calculated. In contrast to the usual Riemann sphere $\mathbb{S}^6$, there exist (integrable) complex structures and para-complex structures on the pseudospheres under consideration.
The study of quasi-Kähler Chern-flat almost Hermitian manifolds is strictly related to the study of anti-bi-invariant almost complex Lie algebras. In the present paper we show that quasi-Kähler Chern-flat almost Hermitian structures on compact manifolds are in correspondence to complex parallelisable Hermitian structures satisfying the second Gray identity. From an algebraic point of view this correspondence reads as a natural correspondence between anti-bi-invariant almost complex structures on Lie algebras to bi-invariant complex structures. Some natural algebraic problems are approached and…
A 3-dimensional Riemannian manifold equipped with a tensor structure of type $(1,1)$, whose third power is the identity, is considered. This structure and the metric have circulant matrices with respect to some basis, i.e., these structures are circulant. An associated manifold, whose metric is expressed by both structures, is studied. Three classes of such manifolds are considered. Two of them are determined by special properties of the curvature tensor of the manifold. The third class is composed by manifolds whose structure is parallel with respect to the Levi-Civita connection of the metri…
We introduce generalized almost contact structures which admit the $B$-field transformations on odd dimensional manifolds. We provide definition of generalized Sasakain structures from the view point of the generalized almost contact structures. We obtain a generalized Sasakian structure on a non-compact manifold which does not arise as a pair of ordinary Sasakian structures. However we show that a generalized Sasakian structure on compact 3-dimensional manifold is equivalent to a pair of Sasakian structures with the same metric. Finally we extend a definition of a generalized almost contact s…
Let $\nabla $ be a linear connection on an $2n$-dimensional almost anti-Hermitian manifold $M$\ equipped with an almost complex structure $J$, a pseudo-Riemannian metric $g$ and the twin metric $G=g\circ J$. In this paper, we first introduce three types of conjugate connections of linear connections relative to $g$, $G$ and $J$. We obtain a simple relation among curvature tensors of these conjugate connections. To clarify relations of these conjugate connections, we prove a result stating that conjugations along with an identity operation together act as a Klein group. Secondly, we give some r…
Gray & Hervella gave a classification of almost Hermitian structures (g,I) into 16 classes. We systematically study the interaction between these classes when one has an almost hyper-Hermitian structure (g,I,J,K). In general dimension we find at most 167 different almost hyper-Hermitian structures. In particular, we obtain a number of relations that give hyperKäher or locally conformal hyperKähler structures, thus generalising a result of Hitchin. We also study the types of almost quaternion-Hermitian geometries that arise and tabulate the results.
We study Lie algebras of generators of infinitesimal symmetries of almost-cosymplectic-contact structures of odd dimensional manifolds. The almost-cosymplectic-contact structure admits on the sheaf of pairs of 1-forms and functions the structure of a Lie algebra. We describe Lie subalgebras in this Lie algebra given by pairs generating infinitesimal symmetries of basic tensor fields given by the almost-cosymplectic-contact structure.
We find geometric conditions on a four-dimensional almost Hermitian manifold under which the almost complex structure is a harmonic map or a minimal isometric imbedding of the manifold into its twistor space.
