Let $\widetilde{J}$ be the canonical para-complex structure on $\mathbb{R}^{2n+2}\simeq\widetilde{\mathbb{C}}^{n+1}$. We study real affine hypersurfaces $f\colon M\rightarrow \widetilde{\mathbb{C}}^{n+1}$ with a $\widetilde{J}$-tangent transversal vector field. Such vector field induces in a natural way an almost paracontact structure ${(φ,ξ,η)}$ on $M$ as well as the affine connection $\nabla$. In this paper we give the classification of hypersurfaces with the property that $φ$ or $η$ is parallel relative to the connection $\nabla$. Moreover, we show that if $\nablaφ=0$ (respectively $\nablaη=0$) then around each point of $M$ there exists a parallel almost paracontact structure. Results we illustrate with some examples.
We study real affine hypersurfaces $f\colon M\rightarrow \mathbb{R}^{2n+2}$ with an almost paracontact structure $(φ,ξ,η)$ induced by a $\widetilde{J}$-tangent transversal vector filed, where $\widetilde{J}$ is the canonical paracomplex structure on $\mathbb{R}^{2n+2}$. We give a classification of hypersurfaces for which an induced almost paracontact structure is metric relative to the second fundamental form. Some other properties of such hypersurfaces are also studied.
In this paper, we study the invariant and noninvariant hypersurfaces of (1,1,1) almost contact manifolds, Lorentzian almost paracontact manifolds and Lorentzian para-Sasakian manifolds, respectively. We show that a noninvariant hypersurface of an (1,1,1) almost contact manifold admits an almost product structure. We investigate hypersurfaces of affinely cosymplectic and normal (1,1,1) almost contact manifolds. It is proved that a noninvariant hypersurface of a Lorentzian almost paracontact manifold is an almost product metric manifold. Some necessary and sufficient conditions have been given f…
In this paper we consider a manifold $(M,\nabla )$ with a symmetric linear connection $\nabla $ which induces on the cotangent bundle $T^*M$ of $M$ a semi-Riemannian metric $\overline g$ with a neutral signature. The metric $\overline g$ is called natural Riemann extension and it is a generalization (made by M. Sekizawa and O. Kowalski) of the Riemann extension, introduced by E. K. Patterson and A. G. Walker (1952). We construct two almost para-Hermitian structures on $(T^*M,\overline g)$ which are almost para-Kähler or para-Kähler and prove that the defined almost para-complex structures are …
There are introduced and studied a pair of associated Schouten-van Kampen affine connections adapted to the paracontact distribution and an almost paracontact almost paracomplex Riemannian structure generated by the pair of associated metrics and their Levi-Civita connections. By means of the constructed non-symmetric connections, the basic classes of the manifolds with the considered structure are characterized. Curvature properties of the studied connections are obtained. A family of examples on a Lie group is constructed.
We study the Schouten-van Kampen connection associated to an almost contact or paracontact metric structure. With the help of such a connection, some classes of almost (para) contact metric manifolds are characterized. Certain curvature properties of this connection are found.
Let $\widetilde{J}$ be the canonical para-complex structure on $\mathbb{R}^4$. In this paper we study $3$-dimensional centro-affine hypersurfaces with a $\widetilde{J}$-tangent centro-affine vector field (sometimes called $\widetilde{J}$-tangent centro-affine hypersurfaces) as well as $3$-dimensional $\widetilde{J}$-tangent affine hyperspheres with the property that at least one null-direction of the second fundamental form coincides with either $\mathcal{D}^+$ or $\mathcal{D}^-$. The main purpose of this paper is to give a full local classification of the above mentioned hypersurfaces. In par…
In this paper we study affine hypersurfaces with non-degenerate second fundamental form of arbitrary signature additionally equipped with an almost symplectic structure $ω$. We prove that if $R^pω=0$ or $\nabla^pω=0$ for some positive integer $p$ then the rank of the shape operator is at most one. The results provide complete classification of affine hypersurfaces with higher order parallel almost symplectic forms and are generalization of recently obtained results for Lorentzian affine hypersurfaces.
In this paper, we study strictly convex affine hypersurfaces centroaffinely congruent to their centre map, in the case when the shape operator has two distinct eigenvalues: one of multiplicity 1, and one nonzero of multiplicity n-1. We show how to construct them from (n-1)-dimensional affine hyperspheres.
Using the Blaschke-Berwald metric and the affine shape operator of a hypersurface M in the (n+1)-dimensional real affine space we can define some generalized curvature tensor named the Opozda-Verstraelen affine curvature tensor. In this paper we determine curvature conditions of pseudosymmetry type expressed by this tensor for locally strongly convex hypersurfaces M, n>2, with two distinct affine principal curvatures or with three distinct affine principal curvatures assuming that at least one affine principal curvature has multiplicity 1.
In this article we obtain a classification of strictly locally convex affine hypersurfaces in A^{n+1} for which the geometrical structure is pointwise invariant under the group SO(n-1) represented by rotations around a fixed axis in the tangent space.
In this paper we study $4$-dimensional affine hypersurfaces with a Lorentzian second fundamental form additionally equipped with an almost symplectic structure $ω$. We prove that the rank of the shape operator is at most one if $R^k\cdot ω=0$ or $\nabla^kω=0$ for some positive integer $k$. This result is the final step in a classification of Lorentzian affine hypersurfaces with higher order parallel almost symplectic forms.
In (equi-)affine differential geometry, the most important algebraic invariants are the affine (Blaschke) metric h, the affine shape operator S and the difference tensor K. A hypersurface is said to admit a pointwise symmetry if at every point there exists a linear transformation preserving the affine metric, the affine shape operator and the difference tensor K. The study of submanifolds which admit pointwise isometries was initiated by Bryant (math.DG/0007128). In this paper, we consider the 3-dimensional positive definite hypersurfaces for which at each point the group of symmetries is isom…
An affine hypersurface is said to admit a pointwise symmetry, if there exists a subgroup of the automorphism group of the tangent space, which preserves (pointwise) the affine metric h, the difference tensor K and the affine shape operator S. In this paper, we deal with positive definite affine hypersurfaces of dimension three. First we solve an algebraic problem. We determine the non-trivial stabilizers G of the pair (K,S) under the action of SO(3) on an Euclidean vectorspace (V,h) and find a representative (canonical form of K and S) of each (SO(3)/G)-orbit. Then, we classify hypersurfaces a…
In this paper, we extend the notion of affine translation surfaces introduced by Liu and Yu (Proc. Japan Acad. Ser. A Math. Sci. 89, 111--113, 2013) in a Euclidean space R^{3} to higher dimensional ambient spaces. We provide that an affine translation hypersurface of constant Gauss-Kronocker curvature K_{0} in R^{n+1} is a cylinder, i.e. K_{0}=0. As further applications we describe such hypersurfaces in the isotropic spaces satisfying certain conditions on the isotropic curvatures and the Laplacian.
We consider non-degenerate centro-affine hypersurface immersions in R^n whose cubic form is parallel with respect to the Levi-Civita connection of the affine metric. There exists a bijective correspondence between homothetic families of proper affine hyperspheres with center in the origin and with parallel cubic form, and Köchers conic omega-domains, which are the maximal connected sets consisting of invertible elements in a real semi-simple Jordan algebra. Every level surface of the omega function in an omega-domain is an affine complete, Euclidean complete proper affine hypersphere with para…
An affine hypersurface (AH) structure is a pair comprising a conformal structure and a projective structure such that for any torsion-free connection representing the projective structure the completely trace-free part of the covariant derivative of any metric representing the conformal structure is completely symmetric. AH structures simultaneously generalize Weyl structures and abstract the geometric structure determined on a non-degenerate co-oriented hypersurface in flat affine space by its second fundamental form together with either the projective structure induced by the affine normal o…
Affine deformations serve as basic examples in the continuum mechanics of deformable 3-dimensional bodies (referred as homogeneous deformations). They preserve parallelism and are often used as an approximation to general deformations. However, when the deformable body is a membrane, a shell or an interface modeled by a surface, the parallelism is defined by the affine connection of this surface. In this work we study the infinitesimally affine time - dependent deformations (motions) after establishing formulas for the variation of the connection, but in the more general context of hypersurfac…
In a previous memoir 2202.03030, we showed that in every dimension $n \geq 5$, there exists (unexpectedly) no affinely homogeneous hypersurface $H^n \subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ having Hessian of constant rank 1 (and not being affinely equivalent to a product with $\mathbb{R}^{m \geqslant 1}$). The present work is devoted to determine all non-product constant Hessian rank 1 affinely homogeneous hypersurfaces $H^n \subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ in dimensions $n = 2, 3, 4$, the cases $n = 1, 2$ being known. With complete details in the case $n = 2$, we illustrate the main features of what can be termed …
In the present paper we study geometric structures associated with webs of hypersurfaces. We prove that with any geodesic (n+2)-web on an n-dimensional manifold there is naturally associated a unique projective structure and, provided that one of web foliations is pointed, there is also associated a unique affine structure. The projective structure can be chosen by the claim that the leaves of all web foliations are totally geodesic, and the affine structure by an additional claim that one of web functions is affine. These structures allow us to determine differential invariants of geodesic we…
Motivated by the ideas and methods used by Naitoh in the consideration of parallel totally real submanifolds in complex space forms, the author of the present paper successfully makes use of the so called Jordan triple and (restricted) structure Lie algebra associated with a given Jordan algebra to establish a one-to-one correspondence between the set of equivalence classes of connected, simply connected and nondegenerate equiaffine symmetric hypersurfaces with a given nonzero affine mean curvature and that of the equivalence classes of semi-simple real Jordan algebras. Then, via the existing …
In this paper, we introduce and study the locally strongly convex equiaffine isoparametric hypersurfaces and equiaffine isoparametric functions on the affine space $A^{n+1}$. Motivated by the case on the Euclidean space $E^{n+1}$, we first introduce the concept of equiaffine parallel hypersurfaces in $A^{n+1}$, obtaining some fundamental identities with the basic equiaffine geometric invariants, and then we define the equiaffine isoparametric hypersurfaces to be ones that are among families of equiaffine parallel hypersurfaces of constant affine mean curvature in $A^{n+1}$. Finally, we introdu…
We begin the study of completeness of affine connections, especially those on statistical manifolds as well as on affine hypersurfaces. We collect basic facts, prove new theorems and provide examples with remarkable properties.
We consider geodesic flows between hypersurfaces in $\R^n$. However, rather than consider using geodesics in $\R^n$, which are straight lines, we consider an induced flow using geodesics between the tangent spaces of the hypersurfaces viewed as affine hyperplanes. For naturality, we want the geodesic flow to be invariant under rigid transformations and homotheties. Consequently, we do not use the dual projective space, as the geodesic flow in this space is not preserved under translations. Instead we give an alternate approach using a Lorentzian space, which is semi-Riemannian with a metric of…
Consider a closed connected hypersurface in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with constant signature (k,l) of the second quadratic form, and approaching a quadratic cone at infinity. This hypersurface divides $\mathbb{R}^n$ into two pieces. We prove that one of them contains a k-dimensional subspace, and another contains a l-dimensional subspace, thus proving an affine version of Arnold hypothesis. We construct an example of a surface of negative curvature in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with slightly different asymptotical behavior for which the previous claim is wrong.
A skew brane is an immersed codimension 2 submanifold in affine space, free from pairs of parallel tangent spaces. Using Morse theory, we prove that a skew brane cannot lie on a quadratic hypersurface. We also prove that there are no skew loops on embedded ruled developable discs in 3-space. The paper extends recent work by M. Ghomi and B. Solomon.
We prove that square integrable holomorphic functions (with respect to a plurisubharmonic weight) can be extended in a square integrable manner from certain singular hypersurfaces (which include uniformly flat, normal crossing divisors) to entire functions in affine space. This provides evidence for a conjecture regarding the positivity of the curvature of the weight under consideration.
A few formulas and theorems for statistical structures are proved. They deal with various curvatures as well as with metric properties of the cubic form or its covariant derivative. Some of them generalize formulas and theorems known in the case of Lagrangian submanifolds or affine hypersurfaces.
This paper is a continuation of our paper math.AG/0205321 where we have built a combinatorial model for the torus fibrations of Calabi-Yau toric hypersurfaces. This part addresses the connection between the model torus fibration and the complex and Kähler geometry of the hypersurfaces.
Bernstein problem for affine maximal type equation has been a core problem in affine geometry. A conjecture proposed firstly by Chern for entire graph and then extended by Trudinger-Wang to its fully generality asserts that any Euclidean complete, affine maximal type, locally uniofrmly convex C^4-hypersurface in R^{N+1} must be an elliptic paraboloid. At the same time, this conjecture was solved completely by Trudinger-Wang for dimension N=2 and θ=3/4, and later extended by Jia-Li to N=2, θ\in(3/4,1] (see also [Zhou]). On the past twenty years, much efforts were done toward higher dimensional …
Eastwood and Ezhov generalized the Cayley surface to the Cayley hypersurface in each dimension, proved some characteristic properties of the Cayley hypersurface and conjectured that a homogeneous hypersurface in affine space satisfying these properties must be the Cayley hypersurface. We will prove this conjecture when the domain bounded by a graph of a function defined on $\R^n$ is also homogeneous giving a characterization of Cayley hypersurface. The idea of the proof is to look at the problem of affine homogeneous hypersurfaces as that of left symmetric algebras with a Hessian type inner pr…
In this paper, we study a second order variational problem for locally convex hypersurfaces, which is the affine invariant analogue of the classical Plateau problem for minimal surfaces. We prove existence, regularity and uniqueness results for hypersurfaces maximizing affine area under appropriate boundary conditions.
In this paper, we study locally strongly convex Tchebychev hypersurfaces, namely the {\it centroaffine totally umbilical hypersurfaces}, in the $(n+1)$-dimensional affine space $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$. We first make an ordinary-looking observation that such hypersurfaces are characterized by having a Riemannian structure admitting a canonically defined closed conformal vector field. Then, by taking the advantage of properties about Riemannian manifolds with closed conformal vector fields, we show that the ellipsoids are the only centroaffine Tchebychev hyperovaloids. This solves the longstanding pr…
The authors study the geometry of lightlike hypersurfaces on manifolds $(M, c)$ endowed with a pseudoconformal structure $c = CO (n - 1, 1)$ of Lorentzian signature. Such hypersurfaces are of interest in general relativity since they can be models of different types of physical horizons. On a lightlike hypersurface, the authors consider the fibration of isotropic geodesics and investigate their singular points and singular submanifolds. They construct a conformally invariant normalization of a lightlike hypersurface intrinsically connected with its geometry and investigate affine connections i…
The total curvature of complex hypersurfaces in $\bC^{n+1}$ and its variation in families appear to depend not only on singularities but also on the behaviour in the neighbourhood of infinity. We find the asymptotic loss of total curvature towards infinity and we express the total curvature and the Gauss-Bonnet defect in terms of singularities and tangencies at infinity.
We consider non-degenerate graph immersions into affine space $\mathbb A^{n+1}$ whose cubic form is parallel with respect to the Levi-Civita connection of the affine metric. There exists a correspondence between such graph immersions and pairs $(J,γ)$, where $J$ is an $n$-dimensional real Jordan algebra and $γ$ is a non-degenerate trace form on $J$. Every graph immersion with parallel cubic form can be extended to an affine complete symmetric space covering the maximal connected component of zero in the set of quasi-regular elements in the algebra $J$. It is an improper affine hypersphere if a…
To every Gorenstein algebra $A$ of finite dimension greater than 1 over a field ${\Bbb F}$ of characteristic zero, and a projection $π$ on its maximal ideal ${\mathfrak m}$ with range equal to the annihilator $\hbox{Ann}({\mathfrak m})$ of ${\mathfrak m}$, one can associate a certain algebraic hypersurface $S_π\subset{\mathfrak m}$. Such hypersurfaces possess remarkable properties. They can be used, for instance, to help decide whether two given Gorenstein algebras are isomorphic, which for ${\Bbb F}={\Bbb C}$ leads to interesting consequences in singularity theory. Also, for ${\Bbb F}={\Bbb R…
The floating body approach to affine surface area is adapted to a holomorphic context providing an alternate approach to Fefferman's invariant hypersurface measure.
We deal with hypersurfaces in the framework of the $n$-dimensional relative differential geometry. We consider a hypersurface $\varPhi$ of $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ with position vector field $\mathbf{x}$, which is relatively normalized by a relative normalization $\mathbf{y}$. Then $\mathbf{y}$ is also a relative normalization of every member of the one-parameter family $\mathcal{F}$ of hypersurfaces $\varPhi_μ$ with position vector field $$\mathbf{x}_μ= \mathbf{x} + μ\, \mathbf{y},$$ where $μ$ is a real constant. We call every hypersurface $\varPhi_μ\in \mathcal{F}$ relatively parallel to $\varPhi$…
We construct noncompact solutions to the affine normal flow of hypersurfaces, and show that all ancient solutions must be either ellipsoids (shrinking solitons) or paraboloids (translating solitons). We also provide a new proof of the existence of a hyperbolic affine sphere asymptotic to the boundary of a convex cone containing no lines, which is originally due to Cheng-Yau. The main techniques are local second-derivative estimates for a parabolic Monge-Ampere equation modeled on those of Ben Andrews and Gutierrez-Huang, a decay estimate for the cubic form under the affine normal flow due to B…
Equivalences under the affine group ${\rm Aff} (\mathbb{R}^3)$ of constant Hessian rank $1$ surfaces $S^2 \subset \mathbb{R}^3$, sometimes called parabolic, were, among other objects, studied by Doubrov, Komrakov, Rabinovich, Eastwood, Ezhov, Olver, Chen, Merker, Arnaldsson, Valiquette. Especially, homogeneous models and algebras of differential invariants in various branches have been fully understood. Then what about higher dimensions? We consider hypersurfaces $H^n \subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ graphed as $\{ u = F(x_1, \dots, x_n) \}$ whose Hessian matrix $(F_{x_i x_j})$, a relative affine inv…
Quadratic hypersurfaces are a natural generalization of affine subspaces, and projections are elementary blocks of algorithms in optimization and machine learning. It is therefore intriguing that no proper studies and tools have been developed to tackle this nonconvex optimization problem. The quadproj package is a user-friendly and documented software that is dedicated to project a point onto a non-cylindrical central quadratic hypersurface.
Holomorphically homogeneous CR real hypersurfaces $M^3 \subset \mathbb{C}^2$ were classified by Élie Cartan in 1932. In the next dimension, we complete the classification of simply-transitive Levi non-degenerate hypersurfaces $M^5 \subset \mathbb{C}^3$ using a novel Lie algebraic approach independent of any earlier classifications of abstract Lie algebras. Central to our approach is a new coordinate-free formula for the fundamental (complexified) quartic tensor. Our final result has a unique (Levi-indefinite) non-tubular model, for which we demonstrate geometric relations to planar equi-affine…
Real analytic ($\mathcal{C}^ω$) surfaces $S^2$ in $\mathbb{R}^3 \ni (x,y,u)$ graphed as $\big\{ u = F(x,y) \big\}$ with $F_{xx} \neq 0$ whose Gaussian curvature vanishes identically: \[ 0 \,\equiv\, F_{xx}\,F_{yy} - F_{xy}^2, \] possess, under the action of the affine transformation group ${\sf Aff}_3(\mathbb{R}) = {\sf GL}_3(\mathbb{R}) \ltimes \mathbb{R}^3$, a basic invariant analogous to $2$-nondegeneracy for $\mathcal{C}^ω$ real hypersurfaces $M^5 \subset \mathbb{C}^3$: \[ S_{\sf aff} \,:=\, \frac{F_{xx}\,F_{xxy}-F_{xy}\,F_{xxx}}{ F_{xx}^2}. \] It is known (or easily recovered) that $S$ is…
