A skew brane is an immersed codimension 2 submanifold in affine space, free from pairs of parallel tangent spaces. Using Morse theory, we prove that a skew brane cannot lie on a quadratic hypersurface. We also prove that there are no skew loops on embedded ruled developable discs in 3-space. The paper extends recent work by M. Ghomi and B. Solomon.

No skew branes on non-degenerate hyperquadrics

We show that non-degenerate hyperquadrics in R^{n+2} admit no skew branes. Stated more traditionally, a compact codimension-one immersed submanifold of a non-degenerate hyperquadric of euclidean space must have parallel tangent spaces at two distinct points. Similar results have been proven by others, but (except for ellipsoids in R^3) always under C^2 smoothness and genericity assumptions. We use neither assumption here.

Existence and non-existence of skew branes

Following recent work by Ghomi, Solomon and Tabachnikov, we study geometry and topology of skew branes. A skew brane is a codimension 2 submanifold in affine space such that the tangent spaces at any pair of distinct points are not parallel. We prove that if an oriented closed manifold has a non-zero Euler characteristic $ξ$ then it is not a skew brane; generically, the number of oppositely oriented pairs of parallel tangent spaces is not less than $(ξ^2)/4$. We also construct examples of skew odd-dimensional spheres and skew two-dimensional tori.

Skew-symmetric complex matrices, pure spinors, the twistor space of the conformal $2n$-sphere, and the Fano variety of linear $n$-folds of a non-singular complex quadric hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}^{2n+1}$

For $n \geq 1$, the twistor space $\mathfrak{Z}(\mathbb{S}^{2n})$ of the conformal $2n$-sphere is biholomorphic to the Zariski closure, taken in the complex Grassmannian manifold $\mathbf{G}(n+1, 2n+2)$, of the set of graphs of skew-symmetric linear endomorphism of $\mathbb{C}^{n+1}$. Second Order parallel tensor on generalized f.pk-space form and hypersurfaces of generalized f.pk-space form

The purpose of the present paper to study a second order symmetric parallel tensor in generalized f.pk-space form. Second order symmetric parallel tensor in f.pk-space form is combination of the associated metric tensor and $1$-forms of structure vector fields. We prove that there does not exist second order skew-symmetric parallel tensor in f.pk-space form. We also deduce that there is no parallel hypersurface in a generalized f.pk-space form but there is semi-parallel hypersurfaces in a generalized f.pk-space form.

Virtual immersions and minimal hypersurfaces in compact symmetric spaces

We show that closed, immersed, minimal hypersurfaces in a compact symmetric space satisfy a lower bound on the index plus nullity, which depends linearly on their first Betti number. Moreover, if either the minimal hypersurface satisfies a certain genericity condition, or if the ambient space is a product of two CROSSes, we improve this to a lower bound on the index alone, which is affine in the first Betti number. Lie derivatives and structure Jacobi operator on real hypersurfaces in complex projective spaces II

Let $M$ be a real hypersurface in complex projective space. The almost contact metric structure on $M$ allows us to consider, for any nonnull real number $k$, the corresponding $k$-th generalized Tanaka-Webster connection on $M$ and, associated to it, a differential operator of first order of Lie type. Considering such a differential operator and Lie derivative we define, from the structure Jacobi operator $R_ξ$ on $M$ a tensor field of type (1,2), $R_{ξ_T}^{(k)}$. We obtain some classifications of real hypersurfaces for which $R_{ξ_T}^{(k)}$ is either symmetric or skew symmetric.

Instantons and branes in manifolds with vector cross product

In this paper we study the geometry of manifolds with vector cross product and its complexification. First we develop the theory of instantons and branes and study their deformations. For example they are (i) holomorphic curves and Lagrangian submanifolds in symplectic manifolds and (ii) associative submanifolds and coassociative submanifolds in G_2-manifolds. Second we classify Kahler manifolds with the complex analog of vector cross product, namely they are Calabi-Yau manifolds and hyperkahler manifolds. Branes, moduli spaces and smooth transition from big crunch to big bang

We consider branes $N$ in a Schwarzschild-$\text{AdS}_{(n+2)}$ bulk, where the stress energy tensor is dominated by the energy density of a scalar fields map $\f:N\ra \mc S$ with potential $V$, where $\mc S$ is a semi-Riemannian moduli space.
