Let k be a p-adic field. Some time ago, D. Harbater [9] proved that any finite group G may be realized as a regular Galois group over the rational function field in one variable k(t), namely there exists a finite field extension $F/k(t)$, Galois with group G, such that F is a regular extension of k (i.e. k is algebraically closed in F). Moreover, one may arrange that a given k-place of k(t) be totally split in F. Harbater proved this theorem for k an arbitrary complete valued field. Rather formal arguments ([10, §4.5]; \S2 hereafter) then imply that the theorem holds over any `large' field k. This in turn is a special case of a result of Pop [15], hence will be referred to as the Harbater/Pop theorem. We refer to [10], [16], [6] for precise references to the literature (work of Dèbes, Deschamps, Fried, Haran, Harbater, Jarden, Liu, Pop, Serre, and Völklein).
Most proofs (see [10], [19, 8.4.4, p.~93] and Liu's contribution to [16]; see however [15]) first use direct arguments to establish the theorem when G is a cyclic group (here the nature of the ground field is irrelevant), then proceed by patching, using either formal or rigid geometry, together with GAGA theorems.
In the present paper, where I take the case of algebraically closed fields for granted, I show how a technique recently developed by Kollár [12] may be used to give a quite different proof of the Harbater/Pop theorem, when the `large' field k has characteristic zero. This proof actually gives more than the original result (see comment after statement of Theorem 1).
We consider the Kisin variety associated to a $n$-dimensional absolutely irreducible mod $p$ Galois representation $\barρ$ of a $p$-adic field $K$ and a cocharacter $μ$. Kisin conjectured that the Kisin variety is connected in this case. We show that Kisin's conjecture holds if $K$ is totally ramfied with $n=3$ or $μ$ is of a very particular form. As an application, we also get a connectedness result for the deformation ring associated to $\barρ$ of given Hodge-Tate weights. We also give counterexamples to show Kisin's conjecture does not hold in general.
Under a slightly stronger hypothesis, one improves a connectedness result of Debarre [D] for a product of two projective spaces in terms of the extension problem of formal-rational functions (see Theorems 1.3 and 1.4 of the introduction)
We supply a detailed proof of the result by P.S. Green and T. H$\ddot{\text{u}}$bsch that all complete intersection Calabi--Yau 3-folds in product of projective spaces are connected through projective conifold transitions (known as the standard web). We also introduce a subclass of small transitions which we call primitive small transitions and study such subclass. More precisely, given a small projective resolution $π: \widehat{X} \rightarrow X$ of a Calabi--Yau 3-fold $X$, we show that if the natural closed immersion $Def(\widehat{X}) \hookrightarrow Def(X)$ is an isomorphism then $X$ has on…
We explore connections between birational anabelian geometry and abstract projective geometry. One of the applications is a proof of a version of the birational section conjecture.
A criterion for the existence of a birational embedding of an algebraic curve into a projective plane with two Galois points is presented. Several novel examples of plane curves with two inner Galois points as an application are described.
In this paper, we give an affirmative answer to a conjecture in the Minimal Model Program. We prove that log $Q$-Fano varieties of dim $n$ are rationally connected. We also study the behavior of the canonical bundles under projective morphisms.
In this paper, we show that projective globally $F$-regular threefolds, defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p\geq 11$, are rationally chain connected.
We investigate the relationship between connectedness properties of spectra and the Lyubeznik numbers, numerical invariants defined via local cohomology. We prove that for complete equidimensional local rings, the Lyubeznik numbers characterize when connectedness dimension equals one. More generally, these invariants determine a bound on connectedness dimension. Additionally, our methods imply that the Lyubeznik number with indices (1,2) of the local ring at the vertex of the affine cone over a projective variety is independent of the choice of its embedding into projective space.
Given an embedding of a smooth projective curve $X$ of genus $g\geq1$ into $\mathbb{P}^N$, we study the locus of linear subspaces of $\mathbb{P}^N$ of codimension 2 such that projection from said subspace, composed with the embedding, gives a Galois morphism $X\to\mathbb{P}^1$. For genus $g\geq2$ we prove that this locus is a smooth projective variety with components isomorphic to projective spaces. If $g=1$ and the embedding is given by a complete linear system, we prove that this locus is also a smooth projective variety whose positive-dimensional components are isomorphic to projective bund…
In the projective plane PG(2,q) over a finite field of order q, a Tallini curve is a plane irreducible (algebraic) curve of (minimum) degree q+2 containing all points of PG(2,q). Such curves were investigated by G. Tallini in 1961, and by Homma and Kim in 2013. Our results concern the automorphism groups, the Weierstrass semigroups, the Hasse-Witt invariants, and quotient curves of the Tallini curves.
The notion of 'slope rational connectedness' is introduced in the context of smooth orbifold pairs. The main result parallels the characterization of the rational connectedness of projective manifolds in terms of either the non-existence of holomorphic covariant tensors, or of absence of fibrations onto manifolds with pseudo-effective canonical bundle, or of existence of movable classes for which the minimal slope of the tangent bundle is positive. We then use this result to construct the `rational quotient map' in orbifold category.
Let $X$ be an irreducible projective variety and $f$ a morphism $X \rightarrow \mathbb{P}^n$. We give a new proof of the fact that the preimage of any linear variety of dimension $k\ge n+1-\dim f(X)$ is connected. We prove that the statement is a consequence of the Generalized Hodge Index Theorem using easy numerical arguments that hold in any characteristic. We also prove the connectedness Theorem of Fulton and Hansen as application of our main theorem.
A criterion for the existence of a birational embedding into a projective plane with three collinear Galois points for algebraic curves is presented. The extendability of an automorphism induced by a Galois point to a linear transformation of the projective plane is also discussed, under the assumption that two Galois points exist.
We study some examples of Bridgeland-Douglas stability conditions on triangulated categories. From one side we give a complete description of the stability manifolds for smooth projective curves of positive genus. From the other side we study stability conditions on triangulated categories generated by an exceptional collection. In the case of the projective line this leads to the connectedness and simply-connectedness of the stability manifold.
In a previous paper, we proved that a projective Kähler manifold of positive total scalar curvature is uniruled. At the other end of the spectrum, it is a well-known theorem of Campana and Kollár-Miyaoka-Mori that a projective Kähler manifold of positive Ricci curvature is rationally connected. In the present work, we investigate the intermediate notion of $k$-positive Ricci curvature and prove that for a projective $n$-dimensional Kähler manifold of $k$-positive Ricci curvature the MRC fibration has generic fibers of dimension at least $n-k+1$. We also establish an analogous result for projec…
The article provides a sufficient condition for a locally finite module over the absolute Galois group of a finite field F to satisfy the Riemann Hypothesis Analogue with respect to the projective line. The condition holds for all smooth irreducible projective curves of positive genus, defined over F. By construction of an explicit example we establish that the scope of our main result is larger than the class of the smooth irreducible projective varieties, defined over F.
Given a connection on a meromorphic vector bundle over a compact Riemann surface with reductive Galois group, we associate to it a projective variety. Connections such that their associated projective variety are curves can be classified, up to projective equivalence, using ruled surfaces. In particular, such a meromorphic connection is the pullbacks of a Standard connection. This extend a similar result by Klein for second-order ordinary linear differential equations to a broader class of equations.
We prove the irredcibility (and the rational connectedness) of the moduli spaces of (free) morphisms from a projective line to a successive blowing-up of a product of projective spaces if a suitable numerical condition on morphisms is provided (and also if all centers of the blowing-up are rationally connected).

We study cyclic finite Galois extensions of the rational function field of the projective line P^{1}(F_q) over a finite field F_q with q elements defined by considering quotient curves by finite subgroups of the projective linear group PGL(2,q), and we enumerate them expressing the count in terms of Stirling numbers.
On a general Fano hypersurface in projective space, we determine for infinitely many $k$ the minimal degree $e$ of a rational curve through a general collection of $k$ points. In the case of a hypersurface of index 1, our results hold for all $k\geq 1$. In an appendix, M.C. Chang proves an arithmetical result which implies that in the case of index $>1$, the density of the set of curve degrees $e$ covered by our method is approximately $\frac{(n-d)(d-\frac{5}{2})}{(n-2)d}$.
It is well known that a smooth projective Fano variety is rationally connected. Recently Zhang (and later Hacon and McKernan as a special case of their work on the Shokurov RC-conjecture) proved that the same conclusion holds for a klt pair $(X,\D)$ such that $-(K_X+\D)$ is big and nef. We prove here a natural generalization of the above result by dropping the nefness assumption. Namely we show that a klt pair $(X,\D)$ such that $-(K_X+\D)$ is big is rationally connected modulo the non-nef locus of $-(K_X+\D)$. This result is a consequence of a more general structure theorem for arbitrary pair…
The arrangement of all Galois lines for the Artin-Schreier-Mumford curve in the projective 3-space is described. It may be surprising that there exist infinitely many Galois lines intersecting this curve.
We describe the arrangement of all Galois lines for the Giulietti--Korchmáros curve in the projective $3$-space. As an application, we determine the set of all Galois points for a plane model of the GK curve. This curve possesses many Galois points.
For $X$ a smooth projective variety over a field $k$, we consider the problem of Galois descent for higher Brauer groups. More precisely, we extend a finiteness result of Colliot-Thélène and Skorobogatov to higher Brauer groups.
By studying the theory of rational curves, we introduce a notion of rational simple connectedness for projective homogeneous spaces. As an application, we prove that over a function field of an algebraic surface, a projective homogeneous space admits a rational point if the elementary obstruction vanishes.
We define, for smooth projective orbifold pairs $(X,D)$ notions of `slope Rational connectedness', and of orbifold `slope Rational quotient' . These notions extend to this larger context the classical notions of rationally connected manifold and `rational quotient' (sometimes called `MRC fibration'). Our notions and proofs work entirely in characteristic zero, and are based on the consideration of foliations with minimal positive slope with respect to some suitable movable class. The existence of covering or connecting families of `orbifold rational curves' is indeed presently unknown in the o…
A point $P$ in projective space is said to be Galois with respect to a hypersurface if the function field extension induced by the projection from $P$ is Galois. We present a hyperplane section theorem for Galois points. Precisely, if $P$ is a Galois point for a hypersurface, then $P$ is Galois for a general hyperplane section passing through $P$. As an application, we determine hypersurfaces of dimension $n$ with $n$-dimensional sets of Galois points.
Let $C \subset \mathbb{P}^2$ be a plane curve of degree at least three. A point $P$ in projective plane is said to be Galois if the function field extension induced by the projection $π_P: C \dashrightarrow \mathbb P^1$ from $P$ is Galois. Further we say that a Galois point is extendable if any birational transformation induced by the Galois group can be extended to a linear transformation of the projective plane. This article is the second part of [2], where we showed that the Galois group at an extendable Galois point $P$ has a natural action on the dual curve $C^* \subset \mathbb{P}^{2*}$ w…
Given a morphism between smooth projective varieties $f: W \to X$, we study whether $f$-relatively free rational curves imply the existence of $f$-relatively very free rational curves. The answer is shown to be positive when the fibers of the map $f$ have Picard number 1 and a further smoothness assumption is imposed. The main application is when $X \subset \PP^n$ is a smooth complete intersection of type $(d_1, ..., d_c)$ and $\sum d_i^2 \leq n$. In this case, we take $W$ to be the space of pointed lines contained in $X$ and the positive answer to the question implies that $X$ contains very t…
In this paper I explore the structure of the fields of definition of Galois branched covers of the projective line over \bar Q. The first main result states that every mere cover model has a unique minimal field of definition where its automorphisms are defined, and goes on to describe special properties of this field. One corollary of this result is that for every G-Galois branched cover there is a field of definition which is Galois over its field of moduli, with Galois group a subgroup of Aut(G). The second main theorem states that the field resulting by adjoining to the field of moduli all…
For a plane curve, a point in the projective plane is said to be Galois when the point projection induces a Galois extension of function fields. We give a new characterization of a Fermat curve whose degree minus one is a power of $p$ in characteristic $p>2$, which is sometimes called Hermitian, by the number of Galois points lying on the curve.
We present four new examples of plane rational curves with two Galois points in positive characteristic, and determine the number of Galois points for three of them. Our results are related to a problem on projective linear groups.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective connected curve of genus $g\ge 2$ defined over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$. Let $G$ be a finite group, $P$ a Sylow $p$-subgroup of $G$ and $N_G(P)$ its normalizer in $G$. We show that if there exists an étale Galois cover $Y\to X$ with group $N_G(P)$, then $G$ is the Galois group wan étale Galois cover $\mathcal{Y}\to\mathcal{X}$, where the genus of $\mathcal{X}$ depends on the order of $G$, the number of Sylow $p$-subgroups of $G$ and $g$. Suppose that $G$ is an extension of a group $H$ of order prime to $p$ by a $p$-group $P$ and $…
We consider the inverse Galois problem over function fields of positive characteristic p, for example, the inverse Galois problem over the projective line. We describe a method to construct certain Galois covers of the projective line and other curves, which are ordinary in the sense that their Jacobian has maximal p-torsion. We do this by constructing Galois covers of ordinary semi-stable curves, and then deforming them into smooth Galois covers.
Special covers are metacyclic covers of the projective line, with Galois group of order pm, which have a specific type of bad reduction to characteristic p. Such covers arise in the study of the arithmetic of Galois covers of the projective line with three branch points. Our results provide a classification of all special covers in terms of certain lifting data in characteristic p.
A classical theorem by Hartshorne states that the dual graph of any arithmetically Cohen--Macaulay projective scheme is connected. We give a quantitative version of Hartshorne's result, in terms of Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity. If $X \subset \mathbb{P}^n$ is an arithmetically Gorenstein projective scheme of regularity $r+1$, and if every irreducible component of $X$ has regularity $\le r'$, we show that the dual graph of $X$ is $\lfloor{\frac{r+r'-1}{r'}}\rfloor$-connected. The bound is sharp. We also provide a strong converse to Hartshorne's result: Every connected graph is the dual graph …
We use the theory of canonical models of Shimura varieties to describe the projective limit of the curves Y(N), all N, and its automorphism group. In particular we prove that the Galois group of Q(CM) over Q is an extension of a certain abelian group by a 2-element group, where Q(CM) stands for the the extension of Q by all the CM-points on all the curves Y(N).
In his previous paper (Math. Res. Letters 7(2000), 123--132) the author proved that in characteristic zero the jacobian $J(C)$ of a hyperelliptic curve $C: y^2=f(x)$ has only trivial endomorphisms over an algebraic closure $K_a$ of the ground field $K$ if the Galois group $Gal(f)$ of the irreducible polynomial $f(x) \in K[x]$ is either the symmetric group $S_n$ or the alternating group $A_n$. Here $n>4$ is the degree of $f$. In math.AG/0003002 we extended this result to the case of certain ``smaller'' Galois groups. In particular, we treated the infinite series $n=2^r+1, Gal(f)=L_2(2^r)$ and $…
We study birational transformations belonging to Galois points. Let $P$ be a Galois point for a plane curve $C$ and $G_P$ be a Galois group at $P$. Then an element of $G_P$ induces a birational transformation of $C$. In general, it is difficult to determine when this birational transformations can be extended to a Cremona (or projective) transformation. In this article, we shall prove that if the Galois group is isomorphic to the cyclic group of order three, then any element of the Galois group has an expression as a de Jonquières transformation. In particular, they can be extended to Cremona …
The automorphism group of the Galois covering induced by a pluri-canonical generic covering of a projective space is investigated. It is shown that by means of such coverings one obtains, in dimensions one and two, serieses of specific actions of the symmetric groups $S_d$ on curves and surfaces not deformable to an action of $S_d$ which is not the full automorphism group. As an application, new DIF $\ne$ DEF examples for $G$-varieties in complex and real geometry are given.
In this paper, we study the problem of tropicalizing tame degree three coverings of the projective line. Given any degree three covering $C\longrightarrow{\mathbb{P}^{1}}$, we give an algorithm that produces the Berkovich skeleton of $C$. In particular, this gives an algorithm for finding the Berkovich skeleton of a genus $3$ curve. The algorithm uses a continuity statement for inertia groups of semistable Galois coverings, which we prove first. After that we give a formula for the decomposition group of an irreducible component $Γ\subset{\mathcal{C}_{s}}$ for a semistable Galois covering $\ma…
We use Galois closures of finite rational maps between complex projective varieties to introduce a new method for producing varieties such that the holomorphic part of the cup product map has non-trivial kernel. We then apply our result to the two-dimensional case and we construct a new family of surfaces which are Lagrangian in their Albanese variety. Moreover, we analyze these surfaces computing their Chern invariants, and proving that they are not fibred over curves of genus greater than one.
We prove a generalization of Shafarevich's Conjecture for fields of Laurent series in two variables over an arbitrary field. While not projective, the absolute Galois group of such a field is shown to be semi-free. We also show that the function field of a smooth projective curve over a large field has semi-free absolute Galois group. In the first edition of this paper it was shown that these groups are quasi-free, which is weaker.
