Given a connection on a meromorphic vector bundle over a compact Riemann surface with reductive Galois group, we associate to it a projective variety. Connections such that their associated projective variety are curves can be classified, up to projective equivalence, using ruled surfaces. In particular, such a meromorphic connection is the pullbacks of a Standard connection. This extend a similar result by Klein for second-order ordinary linear differential equations to a broader class of equations.
By a quasi-connected reductive group (a term of Labesse) over an arbitrary field we mean an almost direct product of a connected semisimple group and a quasi-torus (a smooth group of multiplicative type). We show that a linear algebraic group is quasi-connected reductive if and only if it is isomorphic to a smooth normal subgroup of a connected reductive group. We compute the first Galois cohomology set H^1(R,G) of a quasi-connected reductive group G over the field R of real numbers in terms of a certain action of a subgroup of the Weyl group on the Galois cohomology of a fundamental quasi-tor…
Let $G$ be a connected reductive group over a number field $F$, and let $S$ be a set (finite or infinite) of places of $F$. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for the surjectivity of the localization map from $H^1(F,G)$ to the "direct sum" of the sets $H^1(F_v,G)$ where $v$ runs over $S$. In the appendices, we give a new construction of the abelian Galois cohomology of a reductive group over a field of arbitrary characteristic.
We interpret Galois covers in terms of particular monoidal functors, extending the correspondence between torsors and fiber functors. As applications we characterize tame $G$-covers between normal varieties for finite and étale group schemes and we prove that, if $G$ is a finite, flat and finitely presented nonabelian and linearly reductive group scheme over a ring, then the moduli stack of $G$-covers is reducible.
We establish arithmetic duality theorems for short complexes associated to reductive groups over $p$-adic function fields. Using dualities, we deduce obstructions to weak approximation for certain reductive groups (especially quasi-split ones) and relate this obstruction to an unramified Galois cohomology group.
For any simple algebraic group $G$ of exceptional type, we construct geometric $\ell$-adic Galois representations with algebraic monodromy group equal to $G$, in particular producing the first such examples in types $\mathrm{F}_4$ and $\mathrm{E}_6$. To do this, we extend to general reductive groups Ravi Ramakrishna's techniques for lifting odd two-dimensional Galois representations to geometric $\ell$-adic representations.
We show that the triviality of the differential Galois cohomologies over a partial differential field K of a linear differential algebraic group is equivalent to K being algebraically, Picard-Vessiot, and linearly differentially closed. This former is also known to be equivalent to the uniqueness up to an isomorphism of a Picard-Vessiot extension of a linear differential equation with parameters.
Stratifications and iterative differential equations are analogues in positive characteristic of complex linear differential equations. There are few explicit examples of stratifications. The main goal of this paper is to construct stratifications on projective or affine curves in positive characteristic and to determine the possibilities for their differential Galois groups. For the related "differential Abhyankar conjecture" we present partial answers, supplementing the literature. The tools for the construction of regular singular stratifications and the study of their differential Galois g…
We develop a new connection between Differential Algebra and Geometric Invariant Theory, based on an anti-equivalence of categories between solution algebras associated to a linear differential equation (i.e. differential algebras generated by finitely many polynomials in a fundamental set of solutions), and affine quasi-homogeneous varieties (over the constant field) for the differential Galois group of the equation. Solution algebras can be associated to any connection over a smooth affine variety. It turns out that he spectrum of a solution algebra is an algebraic fiber space over the base …
We give model theoretic accounts and proofs of the existence and uniqueness of differential Galois extensions with no new constants, for logarithmic differential equations over a differential field K, when the field C of constants of K is not necessarily algebraically closed, under a variety of assumptions on C and K.
Generalizing the main result of [Aparicio-Monforte A., Compoint E., Weil J.-A., J. Pure Appl. Algebra 217 (2013), 1504-1516], we prove that a linear differential system is in reduced form in the sense of Kolchin and Kovacic if and only if any differential module in an algebraic construction admits a constant basis. Then we derive an explicit version of this statement. We finally deduce some properties of the Lie algebra of Katz's intrinsic Galois group.
In this paper, we give a geometrization and a generalization of a lemma of differential Galois theory. This geometrization, in addition of giving a nice insight on this result, offers us the occasion to investigate several points of differential algebra and differential algebraic geometry. We study the class of simple \D-schemes and prove that they all have a coarse space of leaves. Furthermore, instead of considering schemes endowed with one vector field, we consider the case of arbitrarilly large families of vector fields. This leads us to some developments in differential algebra, in partic…
We prove that a polynomial map is invertible if and only if some associated differential ring homomorphism is bijective. To this end, we use a theorem of Crespo and Hajto linking the invertibility of polynomial maps with Picard-Vessiot extensions of partial differential fields, the theory of strongly normal extensions as presented by Kovacic and the characterization of Picard-Vessiot extensions in terms of tensor products given by Levelt.
This is a translation in English of version 5 of the article arXiv:1404.3998, which is itself an introduction to arXiv:1209.5352. We explain all the ideas of the proof of the following theorem. For any reductive group G over a global function field, we use the cohomology of G-shtukas with multiple modifications and the geometric Satake equivalence to prove the global Langlands correspondence for G in the "automorphic to Galois" direction. Moreover we obtain a canonical decomposition of the spaces of cuspidal automorphic forms indexed by global Langlands parameters. The proof does not rely at a…
Let $f:X \to S$ be a Galois cover of Riemann surfaces, with Galois group $G$. In this paper we analyze the $G$-invariant divisors on $X$, and their associated spaces of meromorphic functions, differentials, and $q$-differentials. We generalize the trace formula for non-trivial elements of $G$ on $q$-differentials, as well as the Chevalley--Weil Formula. When $G$ is Abelian or when the genus of $S$ is 0 we prove additional results, and we also determine the non-special $G$-invariant divisors when both conditions are satisfied.
Let us consider a linear differential equation over a differential field K. For a differential field extension L/K generated by a fundamental system of the equation, we show that Galois group according to the general Galois theory of Umemura coincides with the Picard-Vessiot Galois group. This conclusion generalized the comparision theorem of Umemura and Casale.
This is a revision of the paper that was previously entitled "Weighted Completion of Galois Groups and Some Conjectures of Deligne". Fix a prime number $ł$. We prove a conjecture stated by Ihara, which he attributes to Deligne, about the action of the absolute Galois group on the pro-$ł$ completion of the fundamental group of the thrice punctured projective line. Similar techniques are also used to prove part of a conjecture of Goncharov, also about the action of the absolute Galois group on the fundamental group of the thrice punctured projective line. The main technical tool is the weighted …
In this paper we give smoothness criterions for a good quotient Y of a smooth variety X by a reductive group G. Our results partially answer a question raised by J. Fogarty in the case where G is a finite group. They also give a converse to a theorem of M. Brion, telling that invariant horizontal differential forms on X and differential forms on Y are isomorphic under the assumption that Y is smooth. The proof of our criterion rely on a new description of the dualizing sheaf of Y established in this article.
In an earlier paper it was proved that if a differential field $(K,δ)$ is algebraically closed and closed under Picard-Vessiot extensions then every differential algebraic principal homogeneous space over K for a linear differential algebraic group G over K has a K-rational point (in fact if and only if). This paper explores whether and if so, how, this can be extended to (a) several derivations, (b) one automorphism. Under a natural notion of "generalized Picard-Vessiot extension" (in the case of several derivations), we give a counterexample. We also have a counterexample in the case of one …
We study the inverse problem in the difference Galois theory of linear differential equations over the difference-differential field $\mathbb{C}(x)$ with derivation $\frac{d}{dx}$ and endomorphism $f(x)\mapsto f(x+1)$. Our main result is that every linear algebraic group, considered as a difference algebraic group, occurs as the difference Galois group of some linear differential equation over $\mathbb{C}(x)$.
If k is a commutative field and G a reductive (connected) algebraic group over k, we give bounds for the orders of the finite subgroups of G(k); these bounds depends on the type of G and on the Galois groups of the cyclotomic extensions of k.
This article is concerned with Galois theory for iterative differential fields (ID-fields) in positive characteristic. More precisely, we consider purely inseparable Picard-Vessiot extensions, because these are the ones having an infinitesimal group scheme as iterative differential Galois group. In this article we prove a necessary and sufficient condition to decide whether an infinitesimal group scheme occurs as Galois group scheme of a Picard-Vessiot extension over a given ID-field or not. In particular, this solves the inverse ID-Galois problem for infinitesimal group schemes.
We describe a Picard-Vessiot theory for differential fields with non algebraically closed fields of constants. As a technique for constructing and classifying Picard-Vessiot extensions, we develop a Galois descent theory. We utilize this theory to prove that every linear algebraic group $G$ over $\mathbb{R}$ occurs as a differential Galois group over $\mathbb{R}(z)$. The main ingredient of the proof is the Riemann-Hilbert correspondence for regular singular differential equations over $\mathbb{C}(z)$.
This paper introduces a natural extension of Kolchin's differential Galois theory to positive characteristic iterative differential fields, generalizing to the non-linear case the iterative Picard-Vessiot theory recently developed by Matzat and van der Put. We use the methods and framework provided by the model theory of iterative differential fields. We offer a definition of strongly normal extension of iterative differential fields, and then prove that these extensions have good Galois theory and that a G-primitive element theorem holds. In addition, making use of the basic theory of arc spa…
Deligne constructed a remarkable local system on $\bP^1-\{0,\infty\}$ attached to a family of Kloosterman sums. Katz calculated its monodromy and asked whether there are Kloosterman sheaves for general reductive groups and which automorphic forms should be attached to these local systems under the Langlands correspondence. Motivated by work of Gross and Frenkel-Gross we find an explicit family of such automorphic forms and even a simple family of automorphic sheaves in the framework of the geometric Langlands program. We use these automorphic sheaves to construct l-adic Kloosterman sheaves for…
In positive characteristic, nearly all Picard-Vessiot extensions are inseparable over some intermediate iterative differential extensions. In the Galois correspondence, these intermediate fields correspond to nonreduced subgroup schemes of the Galois group scheme. Moreover, the Galois group scheme itself may be nonreduced, or even infinitesimal. In this article, we investigate which finite group schemes occur as iterative differential Galois group schemes over a given ID-field. For a large class of ID-fields, we give a description of all occuring finite group schemes.
I show that the cohomology of the generic points of algebraic complex varieties becomes {\sl stable} birational invariant, when considered `modulo the cohomology of the generic points of the affine spaces'.
In this paper we develop a differential Galois theory for algebraic Lie-Vessiot systems in algebraic homogeneous spaces. Lie-Vessiot systems are non autonomous vector fields that are linear combinations with time-dependent coefficients of fundamental vector fields of an algebraic Lie group action. Those systems are the building blocks for differential equations that admit superposition of solutions. Lie-Vessiot systems in algebraic homogeneous spaces include the case of linear differential equations. Therefore, the differential Galois theory for Lie-Vessiot systems is an extension of the class…
The complexity of computing the Galois group of a linear differential equation is of general interest. In a recent work, Feng gave the first degree bound on Hrushovski's algorithm for computing the Galois group of a linear differential equation. This bound is the degree bound of the polynomials used in the first step of the algorithm for finding a proto-Galois group and is sextuply exponential in the order of the differential equation. In this paper, we use Szanto's algorithm of triangular representation for algebraic sets to analyze the complexity of computing the Galois group of a linear dif…
We consider the moduli space of stable principal G-bundles over a compact Riemann surface C of genus >1, with G a reductive algebraic group. We explicitly construct a map F from the generic fibre of the Hitchin map to a generalized Prym variety associated to a suitable Galois covering of C. The map F has finite fibres. In case G=PGl(2) one can check that the generic fibre of F is a principal homogeneous space with respect to a product of 2d-2 copies of Z/2Z where d is the degree of the canonical bundle over C. However in case the Dynkin diagram of G does not contain components of type $B_{n}$ …
We are considering iterative derivations on the function field L of abelian schemes in positive characteristic p>0, and give conditions when the torsion group schemes of this abelian scheme occur as ID-automorphism groups, i.e. are the ID-Galois groups of L over certain ID-subfields. For an explicit example, we even give a construction of (a family of) such iterative derivations.
We develop a Galois theory for linear differential equations equipped with the action of an endomorphism. This theory is aimed at studying the difference algebraic relations among the solutions of a linear differential equation. The Galois groups here are linear difference algebraic groups, i.e., matrix groups defined by algebraic difference equations.
In this paper, we generalize the definition of the differential Galois group and the Galois correspondence theorem established previously for Picard-Vessiot extensions of real differential fields with real closed field of constants to any Picard-Vessiot extension.
We determine the absolute differential Galois group of the field $\mathbb{C}(x)$ of rational functions: It is the free proalgebraic group on a set of cardinality $|\mathbb{C}|$. This solves a longstanding open problem posed by B.H. Matzat. For the proof we develop a new characterization of free proalgebraic groups in terms of split embedding problems, and we use patching techniques in order to solve a very general class of differential embedding problems. Our result about $\mathbb{C}(x)$ also applies to rational function fields over more general fields of coefficients.
For a differential operator $L$ of order $n$ over $C(z)$ with a finite (differential) Galois group $G\subset {\rm GL}(C^n)$, there is an algorithm, by M. van Hoeij and J.-A.~Weil, which computes the associated evaluation of the invariants $ev:C[X_1,\dots ,X_n]^G\rightarrow C(z)$. The procedure proposed here does the opposite: it uses a theorem of E.~Compoint and computes the operator $L$ from a given evaluation $h$. Moreover it solves a part of the inverse problem of producing $L$ for a given representation of a finite group $G$. Another part considered here, is finding irreducible $G$-invaria…
The purpose of this paper is to connect two subjects: the theory of quantum integrable systems (complete commutative rings of differential operators), and differential Galois theory. We define quantum completely integrable systems (QCIS), algebraically integrable QCIS, the differential Galois group of a QCIS. We show that the differential Galois group is always reductive and that a QCIS is algebraically integrable if and only if its differential Galois group is commutative. In particular, we show that a differential operator L in one variable is algebraic in the sense of Krichever (i.e. finite…
This article is a survey of conjectures and results on reductive algebraic groups having good reduction at a suitable set of discrete valuations of the base field. Until recently, this subject has received relatively little attention, but now it appears to be developing into one of the central topics in the emerging arithmetic theory of (linear) algebraic groups over higher-dimensional fields. The focus of this article is on the Main Conjecture asserting the finiteness of the number of isomorphism classes of forms of a given reductive group over a finitely generated field that have good reduct…
We develop algorithms to compute the differential Galois group corresponding to a one-parameter family of second order homogeneous ordinary linear differential equations with rational function coefficients. More precisely, we consider equations of the form \frac{\partial^2Y}{\partial x^2}+ r_1\frac{\partial Y}{\partial x} +r_2Y=0, where $r_1,r_2\in C(x,t)$ and $C$ is an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. We work in the setting of parameterized Picard-Vessiot theory, which attaches a linear differential algebraic group to such an equation, that is, a group of invertible matrices…
Let $\nabla$ be a meromorphic connection on a vector bundle over a compact Riemann surface $Γ$. An automorphism $σ:Γ\toΓ$ is called a symmetry of $\nabla$ if the pull-back bundle and the pull-back connection can be identified with $\nabla$. We study the symmetries by means of what we call the Fano Group; and, under the hypothesis that $\nabla$ has a unimodular reductive Galois group, we relate the differential Galois group, the Fano group and the symmetries by means of an exact sequence.
In this article we compute Galois groupoid of discret Painlev{é} equations. Our main tool is a semi-continuity theorem for the Galois groupoid in a confluence situation of a diffrence equation to a differential equation.
