This is a revision of the paper that was previously entitled "Weighted Completion of Galois Groups and Some Conjectures of Deligne". Fix a prime number $ł$. We prove a conjecture stated by Ihara, which he attributes to Deligne, about the action of the absolute Galois group on the pro-$ł$ completion of the fundamental group of the thrice punctured projective line. Similar techniques are also used to prove part of a conjecture of Goncharov, also about the action of the absolute Galois group on the fundamental group of the thrice punctured projective line. The main technical tool is the weighted completion of a profinite group with respect to a reductive representation (and other appropriate data). This theory is developed in this paper.
We study the action of the Galois group on the pro-l-completion of the fundamental group of P^1 - {0, infinity and N-th roots of unity}. We describe the Lie algebra of the image of the Galois action and relate with the geometry of the modular varieties for GL_m for m = 1,2,3,... This story is the l-adic side of the motivic theory of multiple polylogarithms at roots of unity, which generalize the classical cyclotomy theory.
For a stopped Liouville manifold arising from a Liouville sector, we construct a symplectic analogue of the formal neighborhood of the stop on the level of Fukaya categories. This geometric construction is performed via Floer-theoretic methods by allowing wrappings in the negative direction. On the other hand, inspired by homological mirror symmetry for pairs, where the mirror is the formal neighborhood of a divisor in an ambient projective variety, there is a different approach by taking a `categorical formal completion' introduced by Efimov. Our main results establishes equivalence of these …
In the first part of this paper we study the coaction dual to the action of the cosmic Galois group on the motivic lift of the sunrise Feynman integral with generic masses and momenta, and we express its conjugates in terms of motivic lifts of Feynman integrals associated to related Feynman graphs. Only one of the conjugates of the motivic lift of the sunrise, other than itself, can be expressed in terms of motivic lifts of Feynman integrals of subquotient graphs. To relate the remaining conjugates to Feynman integrals we introduce a general tool: subdiving edges of a graph. We show that all m…
We discuss the following two problems: 1) The properties of the multiple zeta-values and their generalizations, multiple polylogarithms at N-th roots of unity; 2) The action of the absolute Galois group on the pro-l-completion of the fundamental group of the projective line without zero, infinity, and all N-th roots of unity; and a surprising connection of these problems with the geometry and topology of modular varieties for GL_m.
Let $C$ be a complex algebraic curve uniformised by a Fuchsian group $Γ$. In the first part of this paper we identify the automorphism group of the solenoid associated with $Γ$ with the Belyaev completion of its commensurator $\mathrm{Comm}(Γ)$ and we use this identification to show that the isomorphism class of this completion is an invariant of the natural Galois action of $\mathrm{Gal}(\mathbb C/\mathbb Q)$ on algebraic curves. In turn this fact yields a proof of the Galois invariance of the arithmeticity of $Γ$ independent of Kazhhdan's. In the second part we focus on the case in which $Γ$…
In this paper, we prove that the group of homotopy automorphisms of the profinite completion of the operad of little $2$-disks is isomorphic to the profinite Grothendieck-Teichmüller group. In particular, the absolute Galois group of $\mathbb{Q}$ acts faithfully on the profinite completion of $E_2$ in the homotopy category of profinite weak operads.
Suppose that C is a smooth, projective, geometrically connected curve of genus g > 2 defined over a number field K. Suppose that x is a K-rational point of C. Denote the Lie algebra of the unipotent completion (over Q_ell) of the fundamental group of the corresponding complex analytic curve by p(C,x). This is acted on by both G_K (the Galois group of K) and Gamma, the mapping class group of the pointed complex curve. In this paper we show that the algebraic cycle C_x-C_x^- in the jacobian of C controls the size of the image of G_K in Aut p(C,x). More precisely, we give necessary and sufficient…
We consider the canonical representation of the absolute Galois group of the rational numbers in the outer automorphism group of the pro-p completion of the fundamental group of the projective line minus 0,1, and infinity. Deligne has conjectured that a certain graded Z_p-Lie algebra arising from this representation becomes a free p-adic Lie algebra on one element in each odd degree starting with 3 when tensored with the Q_p. We construct good choices of these elements and use them to examine the structure of the Z_p-Lie algebra. In particular, we consider how its structure depends upon the re…
Let $F$ be a local non-Archimedean field with ring of integers $o$. Let $\bf X$ be a one-dimensional formal $o$-module of $F$-height $n$ over the algebraic closure of the residue field of $o$. By the work of Drinfeld, the universal deformation $X$ of $\bf X$ is a formal group over a power series ring $R_0$ in $n-1$ variables over the completion of the maximal unramified extension of $o$. For $h \in \{0,...,n-1\}$ let $U_h$ be the subscheme of $\Spec(R_0)$ where the connected part of the associated divisible module of $X$ has height $h$. Using the theory of Drinfeld level structures we show tha…
A positive space is a space with a positive atlas, i.e. a collection of rational coordinate systems with subtraction free transition functions. The set of positive real points of a positive space is well defined. We define a tropical compactification of the latter. We show that it generalizes the Thurston compactification of a Teichmuller space. The tropical boundary of a positive space is a sphere with a piecewise linear structure. Cluster X-varieties are positive spaces of rather special type. We define special completions of cluster X-varieties. They have a stratification whose strata are (…
Given an object over the algebraic closure Qbar of Q, there is often no reason for invariants of the corresponding holomorphic object to be preserved by the absolute Galois group Gal(Qbar/Q), and in general this is not true, although it is sometimes surprising to observe in practice. The case of covers of the projective line branched only over the points 0, 1, and infinity, through Belyi's theorem, leads to Grothendieck's dessins d'enfants program for understanding the absolute Galois group through its faithful action on such covers. This note is motivated by Catanese's question about a higher…
We study projective completions of affine algebraic varieties which are given by filtrations, or equivalently, 'degree like functions' on their rings of regular functions. For a quasifinite polynomial map P (i.e. with all fibers finite) of affine varieties, we prove that there are completions of the source that do not add points at infinity for P (i.e. in the intersection of completions of the hypersurfaces corresponding to a generic fiber and determined by the component functions of P). Moreover we show that there are 'finite type' completions with the latter property, determined by the maxim…
Given a smooth projective curve $X$ of genus at least 2 over a number field $k$, Grothendieck's Section Conjecture predicts that the canonical projection from the étale fundamental group of $X$ onto the absolute Galois group of $k$ has a section if and only if the curve has a rational point. We show that there exist curves where the above map has a section over each completion of $k$ but not over $k$. In the appendix Victor Flynn gives explicit examples in genus 2. Our result is a consequence of a more general investigation of the existence of sections for the projection of the étale fundament…
In this paper we compute the Galois cohomology of the pro-p completion of primitive link groups. Here, a primitive link group is the fundamental group of a tame link in the 3-sphere whose linking number diagram is irreducible modulo p (e.g. none of the linking numbers is divisible by p). The result is that (with Z/pZ-coefficients) the Galois cohomology is naturally isomorphic to the Z/pZ-cohomology of the discrete link group. The main application of this result is that for such groups the Baum-Connes conjecture or the Atiyah conjecture are true for every finite extension (or even every element…
In this article we continue from \cite{sub2-1} the study of normal analytic compactifications of $\cc^2$ from the point of view of their associated pencils of jets of curve germs centered at infinity. If $\bar X$ is a normal analytic compactification of $\cc^2$ which is {\em primitive}, i.e.\ $\bar X \setminus \cc^2$ is irreducible curve, then we show that $\bar X$ is projective iff $\bar X$ is algebraic iff at least one of the jets in the associated pencil of jets of curve-germs can be represented by a planar curve with one place at infinity. As a result we show that there are primitive norma…
This paper gives an exposition of relative weight filtrations on completions of mapping class groups associated to a stable degeneration of marked genus g curves. These relative weight filtrations have been constructed using Galois theory (with Matsumoto) and Hodge theory (with Pearlstein and Terasoma). It is shown that the level 0 part of the relative weight filtration is an analogue of a parabolic subalgebra of a Kac-Moody Lie algebra. It is shown that all such subalgebras correspond to equivalence classes of pants decompositions of the surface -- two being equivalent if and only if they det…
Fix a prime number ell. In this paper we develop the theory of relative pro-ell completion of discrete and profinite groups -- a natural generalization of the classical notion of pro-ell completion -- and show that the pro-ell completion of the Torelli group does not inject into the relative pro-ell completion of the corresponding mapping class group when the genus is at least 3. As an application, we prove that when g > 2, the action of the pro-ell completion of the Torelli group T_{g,1} on the pro-ell fundamental group of a pointed genus g surface is not faithful. The choice of a first-order…
We investigate geometric and combinatorial aspects of the mysterious relationship between the action of the motivic Galois group on the motivic fundamental group of the projective line punctured at zero, infinity, and N-th roots of unity, and the geometry of modular manifolds for the congruence subgroup Y(m;N) of GL(m,Z) fixing (0, ... , 0, 1) modulo N. To achieve this, we consider a canonical collection of elements in the image of the motivic Galois Lie algebra, spanning it over Q. These elements are the motivic correlators at N-th roots of unity. We assign to them chains in the complex compu…
We give a universal construction of a derived affine group scheme and its representation category from a symmetric monoidal infinity-category, which we shall call the tannnakization of a symmetric monoidal infinity-category. This can be viewed as infinity-categorical generalization of the work of Joyal-Street and Nori. We then apply it to the stable infinity-category of mixed motives equipped with the realization functor of a mixed Weil cohomology and obtain a derived motivic Galois group whose representation category has a universality, and which represents the automorphism group of the reali…
The Hodge Galois group is the Tannakian Galois group of the category of real mixed Hodge structures. It has a subgroup, called the twistor Galois group, which is the Galois group of the category of mixed twistor structures, defined by C. Simpson. It is isomorphic to a semidirect product of C* and the unipotent radical of the Hodge Galois group. We define a natural action of the twistor Galois group by A-infinity autoequivalences of the derived category of complexes of sheaves with smooth cohomology on a compact smooth Kahler manifold X. The action of C* is provided by Simpson's action on irred…
We consider smooth completion of algebraic manifolds. Having some information about its singular completions or about completions of its images we prove purity of cohohomology of the set at infinity. We deduce also some topological properties. The work is based on the study of perverse direct images for algebraic maps.
Let X be a smooth compactification of a homogeneous space of a linear algebraic group G over a number field k. We establish the conjecture of Colliot-Thélène, Sansuc, Kato and Saito on the image of the Chow group of zero-cycles of X in the product of the same groups over all the completions of k. When G is semisimple and simply connected and the geometric stabiliser is finite and supersolvable, we show that rational points of X are dense in the Brauer-Manin set. For finite supersolvable groups, in particular for finite nilpotent groups, this yields a new proof of Shafarevich's theorem on the i…
We prove a formula of the equivariant infinity-adic special L-values of abelian t-modules. This gives function field analogues of the equivariant class number formula. As an application, we calculate the special values of Artin L-functions for Galois representations.
For $2g-2+n>0$, the Teichmüller modular group $Γ_{g,n}$ of a compact Riemann surface of genus $g$ with $n$ points removed $S_{g,n}$ is the group of homotopy classes of diffeomorphisms of $S_{g,n}$ which preserve the orientation of $S_{g,n}$ and a given order of its punctures. Let $Π_{g,n}$ be the fundamental group of $S_{g,n}$, with a given base point, and $\hatΠ_{g,n}$ its profinite completion. There is then a natural faithful representation $Γ_{g,n}\hookrightarrow Out(\hatΠ_{g,n})$. The procongruence completion $\checkΓ_{g,n}$ of the Teichmüller group is defined to be the closure of the Teic…
We define motivic multiple polylogarithms and prove the double shuffle relations for them. We use this to study the motivic fundamental group of the multiplicative group - {N-th roots of unity} and relate it to geometry of modular varieties. In particular we get new information about the actionof the Galois group on the pro-l completion of the above fundamental group. This paper is the second part of "Multiple polylogarithms and mixed Tate motives" math.AG/0103059
Given a smooth and separated K(pi,1) variety X over a field k, we associate a "cycle class" in etale cohomology with compact supports to any continuous section of the natural map from the arithmetic fundamental group of X to the absolute Galois group of k. We discuss the algebraicity of this class in the case of curves over p-adic fields, and deduce in particular a new proof of Stix's theorem according to which the index of a curve X over a p-adic field k must be a power of p as soon as the natural map from the arithmetic fundamental group of X to the absolute Galois group of k admits a sectio…
A birationally liftable Galois section s of a hyperbolic curve X/k over a number field k yields an adelic point x(s) in the smooth completion of X. We show that x(s) is X-integral outside a set of places of Dirichlet density 0, or s is cuspidal. The proof relies on $GL_2(F_\ell)$-quotients of $π_1(U)$ for some open U of X. If k is totally real or imaginary quadratic, we prove that all birationally adelic, non-cuspidal Galois sections come from rational points as predicted by the section conjecture of anabelian geometry. As an aside we also obtain a strong approximation result for rational poin…
Let $X$ be a normal proper variety over a perfect field $k$. We describe abelian coverings of X in terms of the functor $\underline{\rm HDiv}_X$ of principal relative Cartier divisors on $X$. If the base field $k$ is finite, the geometric Galois group of the maximal abelian extension of the function field of $X$ is given by the $k$-valued points of the Cartier dual of the completion of $\underline{\rm HDiv}_X$. As another application, we present the geometric abelianized fundamental group of the affine $n$-space over a finite field by the group of big Witt vectors in $n$ variables, a generaliz…
The Deligne--Simpson problem is an existence problem for connections with specified local behavior. Almost all previous work on this problem has restricted attention to connections with regular or unramified singularities. Recently, the authors, together with Kulkarni and Matherne, formulated a version of the Deligne--Simpson problem where certain ramified singular points are allowed and solved it for the case of Coxeter connections, i.e., connections on the Riemann sphere with a maximally ramified singularity at zero and (possibly) an additional regular singular point at infinity. A certain m…
Let pi be a pro-l completion of a free group, and let G be a profinite group acting continuously on pi. First suppose the action is given by a character. Then the boundary maps delta_n: H^1(G, pi/[pi]_n) -> H^2(G, [pi]_n/[pi]_{n+1}) are Massey products. When the action is more general, we partially compute these boundary maps. Via obstructions of Jordan Ellenberg, this implies that pi_1 sections of P^1_k-{0,1,infty} satisfy the condition that associated nth order Massey products in Galois cohomology vanish. For the pi_1 sections coming from rational points, these conditions imply that < (1-x)^…
In a previous work, the third named author found a combinatorics of line arrangements whose realizations live in the cyclotomic group of the fifth roots of unity and such that their non-complex-conjugate embedding are not topologically equivalent in the sense that they are not embedded in the same way in the complex projective plane. That work does not imply that the complements of the arrangements are not homeomorphic. In this work we prove that the fundamental groups of the complements are not isomorphic. It provides the first example of a pair of Galois-conjugate plane curves such that the …
