Let $X$ be a smooth projective connected curve of genus $g\ge 2$ defined over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$. Let $G$ be a finite group, $P$ a Sylow $p$-subgroup of $G$ and $N_G(P)$ its normalizer in $G$. We show that if there exists an étale Galois cover $Y\to X$ with group $N_G(P)$, then $G$ is the Galois group wan étale Galois cover $\mathcal{Y}\to\mathcal{X}$, where the genus of $\mathcal{X}$ depends on the order of $G$, the number of Sylow $p$-subgroups of $G$ and $g$. Suppose that $G$ is an extension of a group $H$ of order prime to $p$ by a $p$-group $P$ and $X$ is defined over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ large enough to contain the $|H|$-th roots of unity. We show that integral idempotent relations in the group ring $\mathbb{C}[H]$ imply similar relations among the corresponding generalized Hasse-Witt invariants.
In this paper I explore the structure of the fields of definition of Galois branched covers of the projective line over \bar Q. The first main result states that every mere cover model has a unique minimal field of definition where its automorphisms are defined, and goes on to describe special properties of this field. One corollary of this result is that for every G-Galois branched cover there is a field of definition which is Galois over its field of moduli, with Galois group a subgroup of Aut(G). The second main theorem states that the field resulting by adjoining to the field of moduli all…
By two well-known results, one of Ax, one of Lubotzky and van den Dries, a profinite group is projective iff it is isomorphic to the absolute Galois group of a pseudo-algebraically closed field. This paper gives an analogous characterization of relatively projective profinite groups as absolute Galois groups of regularly closed fields.
We consider the inverse Galois problem over function fields of positive characteristic p, for example, the inverse Galois problem over the projective line. We describe a method to construct certain Galois covers of the projective line and other curves, which are ordinary in the sense that their Jacobian has maximal p-torsion. We do this by constructing Galois covers of ordinary semi-stable curves, and then deforming them into smooth Galois covers.
Field Arithmetic studies the interplay between arithmetical properties of fields and their absolute Galois groups. Here we studies fields satisfying local global principles for rational points of varieties and profinite groups satisfying local global principles for solvability of embedding problems.
In his previous paper (Math. Res. Letters 7(2000), 123--132) the author proved that in characteristic zero the jacobian $J(C)$ of a hyperelliptic curve $C: y^2=f(x)$ has only trivial endomorphisms over an algebraic closure $K_a$ of the ground field $K$ if the Galois group $Gal(f)$ of the irreducible polynomial $f(x) \in K[x]$ is either the symmetric group $S_n$ or the alternating group $A_n$. Here $n>4$ is the degree of $f$. In math.AG/0003002 we extended this result to the case of certain ``smaller'' Galois groups. In particular, we treated the infinite series $n=2^r+1, Gal(f)=L_2(2^r)$ and $…
This article is the first part of a series of three articles about compatible systems of symplectic Galois representations and applications to the inverse Galois problem. In this first part, we determine the smallest field over which the projectivisation of a given symplectic group representation satisfying some natural conditions can be defined. The answer only depends on inner twists. We apply this to the residual representations of a compatible system of symplectic Galois representations satisfying some mild hypothesis and obtain precise information on their projective images for almost all…
Ideas and techniques from Khare's and Wintenberger's article on the proof of Serre's conjecture for odd conductors are used to establish that for a fixed prime l infinitely many of the groups PSL_2(F_{l^r}) (for r running) occur as Galois groups over the rationals such that the corresponding number fields are unramified outside a set consisting of l, the infinite place and only one other prime.
For a fixed odd prime p and a representation ρof the absolute Galois group of Q into the projective group PGL(2,p), we provide the twisted modular curves whose rational points supply the quadratic Q-curves of degree N prime to p that realize ρthrough the Galois action on their p-torsion modules. The modular curve to twist is either the fiber product of the modular curves X_0(N) and X(p) or a certain quotient of Atkin-Lehner type, depending on the value of N mod p. For our purposes, a special care must be taken in fixing rational models for these modular curves and in studying their automorphis…
Let X be a smooth projective curve of positive genus defined over a number field K. Assume given a Galois covering map x from X to the projective line over K and a place v of K. We introduce a local canonical height on the set of K_v-valued points of X associated to x as an integral with logarithmic integrand, generalizing Tate's local Neron function on an elliptic curve. The resulting global height can be viewed as a 'Mahler measure' associated to x. We prove that the local canonical height can be obtained by averaging, and taking a limit, over divisors of higher order Weierstrass points on X…
This is a revision of the paper that was previously entitled "Weighted Completion of Galois Groups and Some Conjectures of Deligne". Fix a prime number $ł$. We prove a conjecture stated by Ihara, which he attributes to Deligne, about the action of the absolute Galois group on the pro-$ł$ completion of the fundamental group of the thrice punctured projective line. Similar techniques are also used to prove part of a conjecture of Goncharov, also about the action of the absolute Galois group on the fundamental group of the thrice punctured projective line. The main technical tool is the weighted …
The fundamental group of Fermat and generalized Fermat curves is computed. These curves are Galois ramified covers of the projective line with abelian Galois groups $H$. We provide a unified study of the action of both cover Galois group $H$ and the absolute Galois group $\mathrm{Gal}(\bar{\Q}/\Q)$ on the pro-$\ell$ homology of the curves in study. Also the relation to the pro-$\ell$ Burau representation is investigated.
Let V be a nonsingular projective algebraic variety of dimension n. Suppose there exists a very ample divisor D such that D^n=6 and dim H^0(V, O(D))=n+3. Then, (V, D) defines a D_6-Galois embedding if and only if it is a Galois closure variety of a smooth cubic in P^{n+1} with respect to a suitable projection center such that the pull back of hyperplane of P^n is linearly equivalent to D.
An abelian variety over a number field is called L-abelian variety if, for any element of the absolute Galois group of a number field L, the conjugated abelian variety is isogenous to the given one by means of an isogeny that preserves the Galois action on the endomorphism rings. We can think of them as generalizations of abelian varieties defined over L with endomorphisms also defined over L. In the one dimensional case, an elliptic curve defined over L gives rise to a Galois representation provided by the Galois action on its Tate module. This classical Galois representation has been a centr…
We study toric varieties over a field k that split in a Galois extension K/k using Galois cohomology with coefficients in the toric automorphism group. Part of this Galois cohomology fits into an exact sequence induced by the presentation of the class group of the toric variety. This perspective helps to compute the Galois cohomology, particularly for cyclic Galois groups. We use Galois cohomology to classify k-forms of projective spaces when K/k is cyclic, and we also study k-forms of surfaces.
In this note we investigate the problem of existence of a torsor structure for Galois covers of (formal) schemes over a complete discrete valuation ring of residue characteristic $p>0$ in the case of abelian Galois groups of type (p,p,...,p).
This note explores the consequences of Koenigsmann's model theoretic argument from the proof of the birational p-adic section conjecture for curves in the context of higher dimensional varieties over p-adic local fields.
In this paper, we consider infinite Galois extensions of number fields and study the relation between their local degrees and the structure of their Galois groups. It is known that, if $K$ is a number field and $L/K$ is an infinite Galois extension of group $G$, then the local degrees of $L$ are uniformly bounded at all rational primes if and only if $G$ has finite exponent. In this note we show that the non uniform boundedness of the local degrees is not equivalent to any group theoretical property. More precisely, we exhibit several groups that admit two different realisations over a given n…
We discuss the following two problems: 1) The properties of the multiple zeta-values and their generalizations, multiple polylogarithms at N-th roots of unity; 2) The action of the absolute Galois group on the pro-l-completion of the fundamental group of the projective line without zero, infinity, and all N-th roots of unity; and a surprising connection of these problems with the geometry and topology of modular varieties for GL_m.
Let $p$ be an odd prime number, $K_{f}$ the finite unramified extension of $\mathbb{Q}_{p}$ of degree $f$, and $G_{K_{f}}$ its absolute Galois group. We construct analytic families of étale $(φ,Γ)$-modules which give rise to some families of 2-dimensional crystalline representations of $G_{K_{f}}$ with length of filtration $\geq p$. As an application, we prove that the modulo $p$ reductions of the members of each such family (with respect to appropriately chosen Galois-stable lattices) are constant.
We propose the notion of the {\em crystalline sub-representation functor} defined on $p$-adic representations of the Galois groups of finite extensions of $\Qp$, with certain restrictions in the case of integral representations. By studying its right-derived functors, we find a natural extension of a formula of Grothendieck expressing the group of connected components of a Neron model of an abelian variety in terms of Galois cohomology.
In the next paper (Progress in Math. 195(2001), 473--490) we extended this result to the case of certain``smaller'' Galois groups. In particular, we treated the infinite s…
In this mostly expository note we explain how Nori's theory of motives achieves the aim of establishing a Galois theory of periods, at least under the period conjecture. We explain and compare different notions periods, different versions of the period conjecture and view the evidence by explaining the examples of Artin motive, mixed Tate motives and 1-motives.
We prove that the jacobian of a hyperelliptic curve y^2=f(x) is absolutely simple if deg(f)=q+1 where q is a power prime congruent to 5 modulo 8, the polynomial f(x) is irreducible over the ground field of characteristic zero and its Galois group is L_2(q).
This note provides an insight to the diophantine properties of abelian surfaces with quaternionic multiplication over number fields. We study the fields of definition of the endomorphisms on these abelian varieties and the images of the Galois representations on their Tate modules. We illustrate our results with several explicit examples.
Let $G$ be a split reductive group with $\dim Z(G) \leq 1$. We show that for any prime $p$ that is large enough relative to $G$, there is a finitely ramified Galois representation $ρ\colon Γ_{\mathbb Q} \to G(\mathbb Z_p)$ with open image. We also show that for any given integer $e$, if the index of irregularity of $p$ is at most $e$ and if $p$ is large enough relative to $G$ and $e$, then there is a Galois representation $Γ_{\mathbb Q} \to G(\mathbb Z_p)$ ramified only at $p$ with open image, generalizing a theorem of A. Ray. The first type of Galois representation is constructed by lifting a…
We use tools from combinatorial group theory in order to study actions of three types on groups acting on a curve, namely the automorphism group of a compact Riemann surface, the mapping class group acting on a surface (which now is allowed to have some points removed) and the absolute Galois group $\mathrm{Gal}(\bar{\Q}/\Q)$ in the case of cyclic covers of the projective line.
Let $K$ be a number field not containing a CM subfield. For any smooth projective curve $Y/K$ of genus $\geq2$, we prove that the image of the "Selmer" part of Grothendieck's section set inside the $K_v$-rational points $Y(K_v)$ is finite for every finite place $v$. This gives an unconditional verification of a prediction of Grothendieck's section conjecture. In the process of proving our main result, we also refine and extend the method of Lawrence and Venkatesh, with potential consequences for explicit computations.
The paper deals with a particular type of a projective ring plane defined over the ring of double numbers over Galois fields, R\_{\otimes}(q) \equiv GF(q) \otimes GF(q) \cong GF(q)[x]/(x(x-1)). The plane is endowed with (q^2 + q + 1)^2 points/lines and there are (q + 1)^2 points/lines incident with any line/point. As R\_{\otimes}(q) features two maximal ideals, the neighbour relation is not an equivalence relation, i. e. the sets of neighbour points to two distant points overlap. Given a point of the plane, there are 2q(q+1) neighbour points to it. These form two disjoint, equally-populated fa…
In this article we consider outer Galois actions on a free profinite group of rank two, induced by the étale fundamental group of a projective line minus three points or of a pointed elliptic curve over a number field. Under mild technical assumptions their respective images uniquely determine the curves and the number fields.
This is a guide to the construction of nonlinear number fields, which includes new points not found in our earlier article ``Geometric Galois theory, nonlinear number fields and a Galois group interpretation of the idele class group''.
We use a rigidity argument to prove the existence of two related degree twenty-eight covers of the projective plane with Galois group SU3(3).2 = G2(2). Constructing corresponding two-parameter polynomials directly from the defining group-theoretic data seems beyond feasablity. Instead we provide two independent constructions of these polynomials, one from 3-division points on covers of the projective line studied by Deligne and Mostow, and one from 2-division points of genus three curves studied by Shioda. We explain how one of the covers also arises as a 2-division polynomial for a family of …
Let f(x) = x^n + (a[n-1] t + b[n-1]) x^(n-1) + ... + (a[0] t + b[0]) be of constant degree n in x and degree <= 1 in t, where all a[i],b[i] are randomly and uniformly selected from a finite field GF(q) of q elements. Then the probability that the Galois group of f over the rational function field GF(q)(t) is the symmetric group S(n) on n elements is 1 - O(1/q). Furthermore, the probability that the Galois group of f(x) over GF(q)(t) is not S(n) is >= 1/q for n >= 3 and > 1/q - 1/(2q^2) for n = 2.
We study compatible families of four-dimensional Galois representations constructed in the étale cohomology of a smooth projective variety. We prove a theorem asserting that the images will be generically large if certain conditions are satisfied. We only consider representations with coefficients in an imaginary quadratic field. We apply our result to an example constructed by Jasper Scholten, obtaining a family of linear groups and one of unitary groups as Galois groups over $\mathbb{Q}$.
In this note we produce examples of converging sequences of Galois representations, and study some of their properties. Some of the results here are used in the preprint math.NT/0210296.
The Galois action on the pro-$\ell$ étale fundamental groupoid of the projective line minus three points with rational base points gives rise to a non-commutative formal power series in two variables with $\ell$-adic coefficients, called the $\ell$-adic Galois associator. In the present paper, we focus on how Landen's functional equation of trilogarithms and its $\ell$-adic Galois analog can be derived algebraically from the $S_3$-symmetry of the projective line minus three points. Twofold proofs of the functional equation will be presented, one is based on Zagier's tensor criterion devised in…
Let $R$ be a ring and let $A$ be a finite projective $R$-algebra of rank $n$. Manjul Bhargava and Matthew Satriano have recently constructed an $R$-algebra $G(A/R)$, the Galois closure of $A/R$. Many natural questions were asked at the end of their paper. Here we address one of these questions, proving the existence of the natural constructions they call intermediate $S_n$-closures. We will also study properties of these constructions, generalizing some of their results, and proving new results both on the intermediate $S_n$-closures and on $G(A/R)$.
Let p be an odd prime. We consider the cyclotomic extension T := Z_(p)[zeta_{p^2}] of S := Z_(p), with galois group G := (Z/p^2)^*. Since this extension is wildly ramified, the SG-module T is not projective. We calculate its cohomology ring H^*(G, T; S), carrying the cup product induced by the ring structure of T. Proceeding in a somewhat greater generality, our results also apply to certain Lubin-Tate extensions.
We prove automorphy lifting theorems for 2-dimensional Galois representations of absolute Galois groups of totally real fields when the residual representation is of "exceptional" type. This exceptional case is when we are in characteristic 5, the residual representation has projective image PGL_2(F_5), and the fixed field of its kernel contains a primitive 5th root of unity. In this case the Taylor-Wiles patching method does not suffice and we prove our theorem by combining patching with the technique of automorphy by p-adic approximation.
In this note we relate the property of a semisimple l-adic Galois representation being "F-split" for a number field F to its having abelian image. By F-split we mean that the characteristic polynomials of Frobenii all split in F.
In this note we show how the main conjecture of the Iwasawa theory over Q has a natural place in the context of the Galois representation of the Galois group $Gal(\bar Q/Q)$ on the etale pro-p fundamental group of the projective line minus three points. However we still need to assume the Vandiver conjecture to get a proof of the main conjecture in this context.
In this article new cases of the Inverse Galois Problem are established. The main result is that for a fixed integer n, there is a positive density set of primes p such that PSL_2(F_{p^n}) occurs as the Galois group of some finite extension of the rational numbers. These groups are obtained as projective images of residual modular Galois representations. Moreover, families of modular forms are constructed such that the images of all their residual Galois representations are as large as a priori possible. Both results essentially use Khare's and Wintenberger's notion of good-dihedral primes. Pa…
In the local, unramified case the determinantal functions associated to the group-ring of a finite group satisfy Galois descent. This note examines the obstructions to Galois determinantal descent in the ramified case.
Let $L/k$ an Galois extension of number fields with Galois group isomorphic to a dihedral group of order $2n$. In this note, we give a general description of the Hasse norm principle for $L/k$ and the weak approximation for the norm one torus $R^1_{L/k}(\mathbb{G}_m)$ associated to $L/k$.
We investigate the rank gain of elliptic curves, and more generally, Jacobian varieties, over non-Galois extensions whose Galois closure has Galois group permutation-isomorphic to a prescribed group $G$ (in short, "$G$-extensions"). In particular, for alternating groups and (an infinite family of) projective linear groups $G$, we show that most elliptic curves over (e.g.) $\mathbb{Q}$ gain rank over infinitely many $G$-extensions, conditional only on the parity conjecture. More generally, we provide a theoretical criterion which allows to deduce that "many" elliptic curves gain rank over infin…
Let $K$ be a local field and let $L/K$ be a totally ramified Galois extension of degree $p^n$. Being semistable and possessing a Galois scaffold are two conditions which facilitate the computation of the additive Galois module structure of $L/K$. In this note we show that $L/K$ is semistable if and only if $L/K$ has a Galois scaffold. We also give sufficient conditions in terms of Galois scaffolds for the extension $L/K$ to be stable.
We provide a Boseck-type basis of the space of holomorphic differentials for a large class of solvable covers of the projective line with perfect field of constants of characteristic $p > 0$. Within this class, we also describe the Galois module structure of holomorphic differentials for abelian covers.
In Sen's theory in the imperfect residue field case, Brinon defined a functor from the category of C_p-representations to the category of linear representations of certain Lie algebra. We give a comparison theorem between the continuous Galois cohomology of C_p-representations and the Lie algebra cohomology of the associated representations. The key ingredients of the proof are Hyodo's calculation of Galois cohomology and the effaceability of Lie algebra cohomology for solvable Lie algebras.
