The algebra of big zeta values we introduce in this paper is an intermediate object between multiple zeta values and periods of the multiple zeta motive. It consists of number series generalizing multiple zeta values, the simplest examples, which are not multiple zeta series, are Tornheim sums. We show that convergent big zeta values are periods of the moduli space of stable curves of genus zero on one hand and multiple zeta values on the other hand. It gives an alternative way to prove that any such period may be expressed as a rational linear combination of multiple zeta values and a simple algorithm for finding such an expression.
In analogy with the Riemann zeta function at positive integers, for each finite field F_p^r with fixed characteristic p we consider Carlitz zeta values zeta_r(n) at positive integers n. Our theorem asserts that among the zeta values in {zeta_r(1), zeta_r(2), zeta_r(3), ... | r = 1, 2, 3, ...}, all the algebraic relations are those algebraic relations within each individual family {zeta_r(1), zeta_r(2), zeta_r(3), ...}. These are the algebraic relations coming from the Euler-Carlitz relations and the Frobenius relations. To prove this, a motivic method for extracting algebraic independence resu…
It is proved that if $T$ is sufficiently large, then uniformly for all positive integers $\ell \leqslant (\log T) / (\log_2 T)$, we have \begin{equation*} \max_{T\leqslant t\leqslant 2T}\left|ζ^{(\ell)}\Big(1+it\Big)\right| \geqslant e^γ\cdot \ell^{\ell}\cdot (\ell+1)^{ -(\ell+1)}\cdot\Big(\log_2 T - \log_3 T + O(1)\Big)^{\ell+1} \,, \end{equation*} where $γ$ is the Euler constant. We also establish lower bounds for maximum of $\big|ζ^{(\ell)}(σ+it)\big|$ when $\ell \in \mathbb N $ and $σ\in [1/2, \,1)$ are fixed.
Given a number field $K$ of degree $n_K$ and with absolute discriminant $d_K$, we obtain an explicit bound for the number $N_K(T)$ of non-trivial zeros (counted with multiplicity), with height at most $T$, of the Dedekind zeta function $ζ_K(s)$ of $K$. More precisely, we show that for $T \geq 1$, $$ \Big| N_K (T) - \frac{T}π \log \Big( d_K \Big( \frac{T}{2πe}\Big)^{n_K}\Big)\Big| \le 0.228 (\log d_K + n_K \log T) + 23.108 n_K + 4.520, $$ which improves previous results of Kadiri and Ng, and Trudgian. The improvement is based on ideas from the recent work of Bennett $et$ $al.$ on counting zeros…
We present some methods and results in the application of algebraic geometry and computer algebra to the study of algebraic vector bundles, foliations and zeta functions. A connection of the methods and results with noncommutative geometry will be consider.
In this paper, we study the arithmetic zeta function $$\mathscr{Z}_{\mathcal{X}}(s) = \prod_p \prod_{\substack{x \in \mathcal{X}_p \\ \text{closed}}} \Big( \frac{1}{1-|κ(x)|^{-s}} \Big)^{\mathfrak{m}_{p}(x)}$$ associated to a scheme $\mathcal{X}$ of finite type over $\mathbb{Z}$, where $κ(x)$ denotes the residue field and $\mathfrak{m}_{p}(x)$ the multiplicity of $x$ in $\mathcal{X}_p$. If $\mathcal{X}$ is defined over a finite field, then $\mathscr{Z}_{\mathcal{X}}$ appears naturally in the context of point counting with multiplicities. We prove that $\mathscr{Z}_{\mathcal{X}}$ admits a merom…
The p-cohomology of an algebraic variety in characteristic p lies naturally in the category $D_{c}^{b}(R)$ of coherent complexes of graded modules over the Raynaud ring (Ekedahl-Illusie-Raynaud). We study homological algebra in this category. When the base field is finite, our results provide relations between the the absolute cohomology groups of algebraic varieties, log varieties, algebraic stacks, etc. and the special values of their zeta functions. These results provide compelling evidence that $D_{c}^{b}(R)$ is the correct target for p-cohomology in characteristic p.
Let $Δ(x)$ denote the error term in the classical Dirichlet divisor problem, and let the modified error term in the divisor problem be $Δ^*(x) = -Δ(x) + 2Δ(2x) - \frac{1}{2}Δ(4x)$. We show that $$ \int_T^{T+H}Δ^*\bigl(\frac{t}{2π}\bigr)|ζ(1/2+it)|^2dt \;\ll\; HT^{1/6}\log^{7/2}T \quad(T^{2/3+\varepsilon} \le H = H(T) \le T), $$ $$ \int_0^TΔ(t)|ζ(1/2+it)|^2dt \;\ll\; T^{9/8}(\log T)^{5/2},$$ and obtain asymptotic formulae for $$ \int_0^T{\Bigl(Δ^*\bigl(\frac{t}{2π}\bigr)\Bigr)}^2 |ζ(1/2+it)|^2dt,\quad \int_0^T{\Bigl(Δ^*\bigl(\frac{t}{2π}\bigr)\Bigr)}^3|ζ(1/2+it)|^2dt. $$ The importance of the $…
We develop techniques for computing zeta functions associated with nilpotent groups, not necessarily associative algebras, and modules, as well as Igusa-type zeta functions. At the heart of our method lies an explicit convex-geometric formula for a class of $p$-adic integrals under non-degeneracy conditions with respect to associated Newton polytopes. Our techniques prove to be especially useful for the computation of topological zeta functions associated with algebras, resulting in the first systematic investigation of their properties.
We introduce an algebraic formulation of cyclic sum formulas for multiple zeta values and for multiple zeta-star values. We also present an algebraic proof of cyclic sum formulas for multiple zeta values and for multiple zeta-star values by reducing them to Kawashima relation.
For each $(m+1)$-tuple ${\bf n}_m=(n_0,n_1,\ldots,n_m)$ of positive integers, the ${\bf n}_m$-derived zeta function $\widehatζ_{X,\mathbb F_q}^{\,({\bf n}_m)}(s)$ is defined for a curve $X$ over $\mathbb F_q$. This derived zeta function satisfies standard zeta properties. In particular, similar to the Artin Zeta function of $X/\mathbb F_q$, this ${\bf n}_m$-derived Zeta function of $X$ over $\mathbb F_q$ is a ratio of a degree $2g$ polynomial $P_{X,\mathbb F_q}^{({\bf n}_m)}$ in $T_{{\bf n}_m}=q^{-s\prod_{k=0}^mn_k}$ by $(1-T_{{\bf n}_m})(1-q_{{\bf n}_m}T_{{\bf n}_m})T_{{\bf n}_m}^{g-1}$ with …
In this article, we introduce an algebraic setup of non-strict multiple zeta values (NMZVs, for short) and prove some relations of NMZVs, which are analogous to Hoffman's relations of multiple zeta values, by using this algebraic setup of NMZVs.
Building on our previous work (arXiv:1405.5711), we develop the first practical algorithm for computing topological zeta functions of nilpotent groups, non-associative algebras, and modules. While we previously depended upon non-degeneracy assumptions, the theory developed here allows us to overcome these restrictions in various interesting cases.
Interpolated multiple zeta values can be regarded as interpolation polynomials of multiple zeta values and multiple zeta-star values. In this paper, we give some algebraic relations of interpolated multiple zeta values, such as the symmetric sum formula, the shuffle regularized sum formula, a weighted sum formula and some evaluation formulas with even arguments. All the algebraic relations provided in this paper are deduced from the extended double shuffle relations.
We prove a sum-shuffle formula for multiple zeta values in Tate algebras (in positive characteristic), introduced in \cite{PEL3}.This follows from an analog result for double twisted power sums, implying that an ${\mathbb{F}\_p$-vector space generated by multiple zeta values in Tate algebras is an ${\mathbb{F}\_p$-algebra.
Montgomery's pair correlation conjecture predicts the asymptotic behavior of the function $N(T,β)$ defined to be the number of pairs $γ$ and $γ'$ of ordinates of nontrivial zeros of the Riemann zeta-function satisfying $0<γ,γ'\leq T$ and $0 < γ'-γ\leq 2πβ/\log T$ as $T\to \infty$. In this paper, assuming the Riemann hypothesis, we prove upper and lower bounds for $N(T,β)$, for all $β>0$, using Montgomery's formula and some extremal functions of exponential type. These functions are optimal in the sense that they majorize and minorize the characteristic function of the interval $[-β, β]$ in a w…
In this note, we shall discuss a generalization of Thakur's multiple zeta values and allied objects, in the framework of function fields of positive characteristic and more precisely, of periods in Tate algebras.
We consider the values at proper fractions of the arithmetic gamma function and the values at positive integers of the zeta function for F_q[theta] and provide complete algebraic independence results for them.
In 2007 Chang and Yu determined all the algebraic relations among Goss's zeta values for the rational function field - these are also known as the Carlitz zeta values. Goss raised the problem about algebraic relations among Goss's zeta values for a general base ring A, but very little is known. In this paper we develop a general method and determine all algebraic relations among Goss's zeta values for the base ring A attached to an elliptic curve over a finite field. To our knowledge, these are the first non-trivial solutions of Goss's problem for a base ring whose class number is strictly gre…
Multiples zeta values (MZV's for short) in positive characteristic were introduced by Thakur as analogues of classical multiple zeta values of Euler. In this paper we give a systematic study of algebraic structures of MZV's in positive characteristic. We construct both the stuffle algebra and the shuffle algebra of these MZV's and equip them with algebra and Hopf algebra structures. In particular, we completely solve a problem suggested by Deligne and Thakur \cite{Del17} in 2017 and establish Shi's conjectures \cite{Shi18}. The construction of the stuffle algebra is based on our recent work \c…
It is proved that, for all odd integer $s \geqslant s_0(\varepsilon)$, there are at least $\big( c_0 - \varepsilon \big) \frac{s^{1/2}}{(\log s)^{1/2}} $ many irrational numbers among the following odd zeta values: $ζ(3),ζ(5),ζ(7),\cdots,ζ(s)$. The constant $c_0 = 1.192507\ldots$ can be expressed in closed form. The work is based on the previous work of Fischler, Sprang and Zudilin [FSZ19], improves the lower bound $2^{(1-\varepsilon)\frac{\log s}{\log\log s}}$ therein. The main new ingredient is an optimal design for the zeros of the auxiliary rational functions, which relates to the inverse …
We study trivial multiple zeta values in Tate algebras. These are particular examples of the multiple zeta values in Tate algebras in positive characteristic introduced by the second author. If the number of variables involved is 'not large' in a way that is made precise in the paper, we can endow the set of trivial multiple zeta values with a structure of module over a non-commutative polynomial ring with coefficients in the rational fraction field over a finite field. We determine the structure of this module in terms of generators and we show how in many cases, this is sufficient for the de…
We study the value-distribution of the Hurwitz zeta-function with algebraic irrational parameter $ζ(s;α)=\sum_{n\geq_0}(n+α)^{-s}$. In particular, we prove effective denseness results of the Hurwitz zeta-function and its derivatives in suitable strips containing the right boundary of the critical strip $1+i\mathbb{R}$. This may be considered as a first "weak" manifestation of universality for those zeta-functions.
In this paper, we introduce cell-forms on $\mathcal{M}_{0,n}$, which are top-dimensional differential forms diverging along the boundary of exactly one cell (connected component) of the real moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{0,n}(\mathbb{R})$. We show that the cell-forms generate the top-dimensional cohomology group of $\mathcal{M}_{0,n}$, so that there is a natural duality between cells and cell-forms. In the heart of the paper, we determine an explicit basis for the subspace of differential forms which converge along a given cell $X$. The elements of this basis are called insertion forms, their int…
We build, using the notion of zinbiel algebra, some commutative subalgebras $C_{u,v}$ inside an algebra of formal iterated integrals. There is a quotient map from this algebra of formal iterated integrals to the algebra of motivic multiple zeta values. Restricting this quotient map to the subalgebras $C_{u,v}$ of A$_{1,0}$ gives a morphism of graded commutative algebras with the same graded dimension. This is conjectured to be generically an isomorphism. When u+v = 0, the image is instead a sub-algebra of the algebra of motivic multiple zeta values.
Based on the notion of Stark units we present a new approach that obtains refinements of log-algebraic identities for Anderson t-modules. As a consequence, we establish a generalization of Chang's theorem on logarithmic interpretations for special characteristic p multiple zeta values (MZV's) and recover many earlier results in this direction. Further, we devise a direct and conceptual way to get logarithmic interpretations for both MZV's and v-adic MZV's. This generalizes completely the work of Anderson and Thakur for Carlitz zeta values.
This paper draws connections between the double shuffle equations and structure of associators; universal mixed elliptic motives as defined by Hain and Matsumoto; and the Rankin-Selberg method for modular forms for $SL_2(\mathbb{Z})$. We write down explicit formulae for zeta elements $σ_{2n-1}$ (generators of the Tannaka Lie algebra of the category of mixed Tate motives over $\mathbb{Z}$) in depths up to four, give applications to the Broadhurst-Kreimer conjecture, and completely solve the double shuffle equations for multiple zeta values in depths two and three.
We study the algebra MD of generating function for multiple divisor sums and its connections to multiple zeta values. The generating functions for multiple divisor sums are formal power series in q with coefficients in Q arising from the calculation of the Fourier expansion of multiple Eisenstein series. We show that the algebra MD is a filtered algebra equipped with a derivation and use this derivation to prove linear relations in MD. The (quasi-)modular forms for the full modular group Sl_2(Z) constitute a sub-algebra of MD this also yields linear relations in MD. Generating functions of mul…
In this note we shall study the Witten multiple zeta function associated to the exceptional Lie algebra g_2. Our main result shows that its special values at nonnegative integers can always be expressed as rational linear combinations of the multi-polylogs evaluated at 12th roots of unity, except for two irregular cases.
We study multiple zeta values and their generalizations from the point of view of Rota--Baxter algebras. We obtain a general framework for this purpose and derive relations on multiple zeta values from relations in Rota--Baxter algebras.
The Dedekind zeta function of a quadratic number field factors as a product of the Riemann zeta function and the $L$-function of a quadratic Dirichlet character. We categorify this formula using objective linear algebra in the abstract incidence algebra of the division poset.
We prove certain general forms of functional relations among Witten multiple zeta-functions in several variables (or zeta-functions of root systems). The structural background of those functional relations is given by the symmetry with respect to Weyl groups. From those relations we can deduce explicit expressions of values of Witten zeta-functions at positive even integers, which is written in terms of generalized Bernoulli numbers of root systems. Furthermore we introduce generating functions of those Bernoulli numbers of root systems, by which we can give an algorithm of calculating Bernoul…
The conical zeta values are a generalization of the multiple zeta values which are defined by certain multiple sums over convex cones. In this paper, we present a relation between the values of the Dedekind zeta functions for totally real fields and the conical zeta values for certain algebraic cones. More precisely, we show that the values of the partial zeta functions for totally real fields can be expressed as a rational linear combination of the conical zeta values associated with certain algebraic cones up to the square root of the discriminant.
We study the values of the zeta-function of the root system of type $G_2$ at positive integer points. In our previous work we considered the case when all integers are even, but in the present paper we prove several theorems which include the situation when some of the integers are odd. The underlying reason why we may treat such cases including odd integers is also discussed.
The algebraic and combinatorial theory of shuffles, introduced by Chen and Ree, is further developed and applied to the study of multiple zeta values. In particular, we establish evaluations for certain sums of cyclically generated multiple zeta values. The boundary case of our result reduces to a former conjecture of Zagier.
This paper is a culmination of [CM20] on the study of multiple zeta values (MZV's) over function fields in positive characteristic. For any finite place $v$ of the rational function field $k$ over a finite field, we prove that the $v$-adic MZV's satisfy the same $\bar{k}$-algebraic relations that their corresponding $\infty$-adic MZV's satisfy. Equivalently, we show that the $v$-adic MZV's form an algebra with multiplication law given by the $q$-shuffle product which comes from the $\infty$-adic MZV's, and there is a well-defined $\bar{k}$-algebra homomorphism from the $\infty$-adic MZV's to t…
We investigate relations between elliptic multiple zeta values and describe a method to derive the number of indecomposable elements of given weight and length. Our method is based on representing elliptic multiple zeta values as iterated integrals over Eisenstein series and exploiting the connection with a special derivation algebra. Its commutator relations give rise to constraints on the iterated integrals over Eisenstein series relevant for elliptic multiple zeta values and thereby allow to count the indecomposable representatives. Conversely, the above connection suggests apparently new r…
Let $X_{0}=\mathbb{P}^{1} - (\{0,\infty\} \cup μ_{N})\text{ }/\text{ }\mathbb{F}_{q}$, with $N \in \mathbb{N}^{\ast}$ and $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ of characteristic $p>0$ and containing a primitive $N$-th root of unity. We establish an explicit theory of the crystalline pro-unipotent fundamental groupoid of $X_{0}$. In part I, we have computed explicitly the Frobenius, and in particular cyclotomic $p$-adic multiple zeta values. In part II, we use part I to understand the algebraic relations of cyclotomic $p$-adic multiple zeta values via explicit formulas ; this is in particular a study of the harmoni…
I explain how the Lax-Phillips theory can be applied to a purely innovating time series and compute the corresponding scattering function. I then associate such a time series to an algebraic curve (of genus at least 1) over a finite field and show that the Riemann Hypothesis (proven long ago) holds if and only if the scattering is causal (this causality is not independently established, though).
We announce a new type of "Jacobi identity" for vertex operator algebras, incorporating values of the Riemann zeta function at negative integers. Using this we "explain" and generalize some recent work of S. Bloch's relating values of the zeta function with the commutators of certain operators and Lie algebras of differential operators.
In our previous work, we established the theory of multi-variable Witten zeta-functions, which are called the zeta-functions of root systems. We have already considered the cases of types $A_2$, $A_3$, $B_2$, $B_3$ and $C_3$. In this paper, we consider the case of $G_2$-type. We define certain analogues of Bernoulli polynomials of $G_2$-type and study the generating functions of them to determine the coefficients of Witten's volume formulas of $G_2$-type. Next we consider the meromorphic continuation of the zeta-function of $G_2$-type and determine its possible singularities. Finally, by using…
In this paper, we consider the prehomogeneous vector space for pair of simple algebras which are $k$-forms of the $D_4$ type and the $E_6$ type. We mainly study the non-split cases. The main purpose of this paper is to determine the principal parts of the global zeta functions associated with these spaces in the non-split cases. We also give a description of the sets of rational orbits of these spaces, which suggests the expected density theorems arising from the properties of these zeta functions.
In this paper we define and study a Dedekind-like zeta function for the algebra of multicomplex numbers. By using the idempotent representations for such numbers, we are able to identify this zeta function with the one associated to a product of copies of the field of Gaussian rationals. The approach we use is substantially different from the one previously introduced by Rochon (for the bicomplex case) and by Reid and Van Gorder (for the multicomplex case).
Let $S(t) \;:=\; \frac{\displaystyle 1}{\displaystyle π}\arg ζ(\frac{1}{2} + it)$. We prove that, for $T^{\,27/82+\varepsilon} \le H \le T$, we have $$ {\rm mes}\Bigl\{t\in [T, T+H]\;:\; S(t)>0\Bigr\} = \frac{H}{2} + O\left(\frac{H\log_3T}{\varepsilon\sqrt{\log_2T}}\right), $$ where the $O$-constant is absolute. A similar formula holds for the measure of the set with $S(t)<0$, where $\log_kT = \log(\log_{k-1}T)$. This result is derived from an asymptotic formula for the distribution of values of $S(t)$, which is uniform in the relevant parameters, and this is of crucial importance. This in fac…
The MZV algebra is the graded algebra over ${\bold Q}$ generated by all multiple zeta values. The stable derivation algebra is a graded Lie algebra version of the Grothendieck-Teichmüller group. We shall show that there is a canonical surjective $\bold Q $-linear map from the graded dual vector space of the stable derivation algebra over $\bold Q$ to the new-zeta space, the quotient space of the sub-vector space of the MZV algebra whose grade is greater than 2 by the square of the maximal ideal. As a corollary, we get an upper-bound for the dimension of the graded piece of the MZV algebra at e…
In this paper, we are going to perform the shuffle products of $Z_-(n) = \sum_{a+b=m} (-1)^{b} ζ(\{1\}^{a},b+2)$ and $Z_+^\star(n) = \sum_{c+d=n} ζ^{\star}(\{1\}^{c},d+2)$ with $m+n = p$. The resulted shuffle relation is a weighted sum formula given by \begin{equation*} \frac{(p+1)(p+2)}{2} ζ(p+4) =\sum_{m+n=p} \sum_{|\boldsymbolα|=p+3} ζ(α_{0}, α_{1}, \ldots, α_{m}, α_{m+1}+1) \sum_{a+b+c=m} \Bigl( W_{\boldsymbolα}(a,b,c) + W_{\boldsymbolα}(a,b,c=0) + W_{\boldsymbolα}(a=0,b,c) + W_{\boldsymbolα}(a=0,b=m,c=0) \Bigr), \end{equation*} where $W_{\boldsymbolα}(a,b,c) = 2^{σ(a+b+1)-σ(a)-(b+1)} (1-2…
Pellarin introduced the deformation of multiple zeta values of Thakur as elements over Tate algebras. In this paper, we relate these values to a certain coordinate of a higher dimensional Drinfeld module over Tate algebras which we will introduce. Moreover, we define multiple polylogarithms in our setting and represent deformation of multiple zeta values as a linear combination of multiple polylogarithms.
