In analogy with the Riemann zeta function at positive integers, for each finite field F_p^r with fixed characteristic p we consider Carlitz zeta values zeta_r(n) at positive integers n. Our theorem asserts that among the zeta values in {zeta_r(1), zeta_r(2), zeta_r(3), ... | r = 1, 2, 3, ...}, all the algebraic relations are those algebraic relations within each individual family {zeta_r(1), zeta_r(2), zeta_r(3), ...}. These are the algebraic relations coming from the Euler-Carlitz relations and the Frobenius relations. To prove this, a motivic method for extracting algebraic independence results from systems of Frobenius difference equations is developed.
We compute a basis for the p-adic Dwork cohomology of a smooth complete intersection in projective space over a finite field and use it to give p-adic estimates for the action of Frobenius on this cohomology. In particular, we prove that the Newton polygon of the characteristic polynomial of Frobenius lies on or above the associated Hodge polygon. This result was first proved by B. Mazur using crystalline cohomology.
We consider the values at proper fractions of the arithmetic gamma function and the values at positive integers of the zeta function for F_q[theta] and provide complete algebraic independence results for them.
Using the sieve for Frobenius, we show that, in a certain sense, the roots of the L-functions of "most" algebraic curves over finite fields do not satisfy any non-trivial (linear or multiplicative) rational dependency relations. This can be seen as an analogue of conjectures of linear independence among ordinates of zeros of L-functions over number fields. As a corollary, we find, for "most" pairs of distinct algebraic curves over a finite field, the limiting distribution of the (suitably normalized) difference between the number of rational points over extensions of the ground field. The meth…
We prove a large sieve statement for the average distribution of Frobenius conjugacy classes in arithmetic monodromy groups over finite fields. As a first application we prove a stronger version of a result of Chavdarov on the ``generic'' irreducibility of the numerator of the zeta functions in a family of curves with large monodromy.
It is proved that the Riemann zeta function does not satisfy any nontrivial algebraic difference equation whose coefficients are meromorphic functions $ϕ$ with Nevanlinna characteristic satisfying $T(r, ϕ)=o(r)$ as $r\to \infty$
In analogy with values of the classical Euler Gamma-function at rational numbers and the Riemann zeta-function at positive integers, we consider Thakur's geometric Gamma-function evaluated at rational arguments and Carlitz zeta-values at positive integers. We prove that, when considered together, all of the algebraic relations among these special values arise from the standard functional equations of the Gamma-function and from the Euler-Carlitz relations and Frobenius p-th power relations of the zeta-function.
$p$-adic cyclotomic multiple zeta values depend on the choice of a number of iterations of the crystalline Frobenius of the pro-unipotent fundamental groupoid of $\mathbb{P}^{1} - \{0,μ_{N},\infty\}$. In this paper we study how the iterated Frobenius depends on the number of iterations, in relation with the computation of $p$-adic cyclotomic multiple zeta values in terms of cyclotomic multiple harmonic sums. This provides new results on that computation and the definition of a new pro-unipotent harmonic action.
In this paper we compute the values of the p-adic multiple polylogarithms of depth two at roots of unity. Our method is to solve the fundamental differential equation satisfied by the crystalline frobenius morphism using rigid analytic methods. The main result could be thought of as a computation in the p-adic theory of higher cyclotomy. We expect the result to be useful in proving non-vanishing results since it gives quite explicit formulas.
We develop a theory of Tannakian Galois groups for t-motives and relate this to the theory of Frobenius semilinear difference equations. We show that the transcendence degree of the period matrix associated to a given t-motive is equal to the dimension of its Galois group. Using this result we prove that Carlitz logarithms of algebraic functions that are linearly independent over the rational function field are algebraically independent.
The zeta function of a curve over a finite field may be expressed in terms of the characteristic polynomial of a unitary symplectic matrix, called the Frobenius class of the curve. We compute the expected value of the trace of the n-th power of the Frobenius class for an ensemble of hyperelliptic curves of genus g over a fixed finite field in the limit of large genus, and compare the results to the corresponding averages over the unitary symplectic group USp(2g). We are able to compute the averages for powers n almost up to 4g, finding agreement with the Random Matrix results except for small …
The aim of this paper is to provide an analogue of the Ball-Rivoal theorem for $p$-adic $L$-values of Dirichlet characters. More precisely, we prove for a Dirichlet character $χ$ and a number field $K$ the formula $\dim_{K}(K+\sum_{i=2}^{s+1} L_p(i,χω^{1-i}) K )\geq \frac{(1-ε)\log (s)}{2[K:\mathbb{Q}](1+\log 2)}$. As a byproduct, we establish an asymptotic linear independence result for the values of the $p$-adic Hurwitz zeta function.
The knowledge on irrationality of p-adic zeta values has recently progressed. The irrationality of zeta_2(2), ζ_2(3) and of a few other p-adic series of Dirichlet was obtained by F. Calegari. F. Beukers gave a more elementary proof of this result. In parallel, T. Rivoal has just obtained, in the complex case, some Pade approximants of Lerch functions. It is this work which, transposed to C_p, enables us to obtain results of irrationality and linear independence.
The Zeta function of a curve $C$ over a finite field may be expressed in terms of the characteristic polynomial of a unitary matrix $Θ_C$. Following the work of Rudnick, we compute the expected value of $\mbox{tr}(Θ_C^n)$ over the moduli space of hyperelliptic curves of genus $g$, over a fixed finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, in the limit of large genus. As an application, we compute the expected value of the number of points on $C$ in $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ as the genus tends to infinity. We also look at biases in both expected values for small values of $n$.
In this paper, we study multizeta values over function fields in characteristic $p$. For each $d \geq 2$, we show that when the constant field has cardinality $> 2$, the field generated by all multizeta values of depth $d$ is of infinite transcendence degree over the field generated by all single zeta values. As a special case, this gives an affirmative answer to the function field analogue of a question of Y.\ André.
In this paper we refine Ball-Rivoal's theorem by proving that for any odd integer $a$ sufficiently large in terms of $ε>0$, there exist $[ \frac{(1-ε)\log a}{1+\log 2}]$ odd integers $s$ between 3 and $a$, with distance at least $a^ε$ from one another, at which Riemann zeta function takes $\Q$-linearly independent values. As a consequence, if there are very few integers $s$ such that $ζ(s)$ is irrational, then they are rather evenly distributed. The proof involves series of hypergeometric type estimated by the saddle point method, and the generalization to vectors of Nesterenko's linear indepe…
For each positive integer n, we determine the set of symmetric functions f for which the congruence f(p/1,p/2,...,p/(p-1)) \equiv 0 mod p^n holds for all sufficiently large primes p. Our determination is conditional on a conjecture regarding the modulo p independence of Bernoulli numbers. In a recent work the author introduced a new truncated analogue of the multiple zeta function and investigated a class of relations among values of this function at positive integers. The question answered in the present work is equivalent to the determination of the relations satisfied by values of the corre…
A lower bound for the dimension of the $\Q$-vector space spanned by special values of a Dirichlet series with periodic coefficients is given. As a corollary, it is deduced that both special values at even integers and at odd integers contain infinitely many irrational numbers. This result is proved by T.Rivoal if the function considered is the Riemann zeta function, and this paper gives its generalization to more general Dirichlet series.
This is a review on the two first parts of our work on $p$-adic multiple zeta values at $N$-th roots of unity ($p$MZV$μ_{N}$'s), the $p$-adic periods of the crystalline pro-unipotent fundamental groupoid of $\mathbb{P}^{1} - \{0,μ_{N},\infty\}$ (where $N$ and $p$ are coprime). We restrict for simplicity the review to the case of $N=1$, i.e. the case of $p$-adic multiple zeta values ($p$MZV's). The main tools are new objects which we call $p$-adic pro-unipotent harmonic actions. These are continuous group actions on a space containing the non-commutative generating series of weighted multiple h…
In this small note, we provide an elementary proof of the fact that infinitely many odd zeta values are irrational. For the first time, this celebrated theorem been proven by Rivoal and Ball--Rivoal. The original proof uses highly non-elementary methods like the saddle-point method and Nesterenko's linear independence criterion. Recently, Zudilin has re-proven a slightly weaker form of his important result that at least one of the odd zeta values $ζ(5),ζ(7),ζ(9)$ and $ζ(11)$ is irrational, by elementary means. His new main ingredient are certain 'twists by half' of hypergeometric series. Gener…
In this paper we follow the approach of Bertrand-Beukers (and of later work of Bertrand), based on differential Galois theory, to prove a very general version of Shidlovsky's lemma that applies to Pad{é} approximation problems at several points, both at functional and numerical levels (i.e., before and after evaluating at a specific point). This allows us to obtain a new proof of the Ball-Rivoal theorem on irrationality of infinitely many values of Riemann zeta function at odd integers, inspired by the proof of the Siegel-Shidlovsky theorem on values of E-functions: Shidlovsky's lemma is used …
Available proofs of result of the type 'at least one of the odd zeta values $ζ(5),ζ(7),\dots,ζ(s)$ is irrational' make use of the saddle-point method or of linear independence criteria, or both. These two remarkable techniques are however counted as highly non-elementary, therefore leaving the partial irrationality result inaccessible to general mathematics audience in all its glory. Here we modify the original construction of linear forms in odd zeta values to produce, for the first time, an elementary proof of such a result - a proof whose technical ingredients are limited to the prime numbe…
In this paper, we established a sharp version of the difference analogue of the celebrated Hölder's theorem concerning the differential independence of the Euler gamma function $Γ$. More precisely, if $P$ is a polynomial of $n+1$ variables in $\mathbb{C}[X, Y_0,\dots, Y_{n-1}]$ such that \begin{equation*} P(s, Γ(s+a_0), \dots, Γ(s+a_{n-1}))\equiv 0 \end{equation*} for some $(a_0, \dots, a_{n-1})\in \mathbb{C}^{n}$ and $a_i-a_j\notin \mathbb{Z}$ for any $0\leq i<j\leq n-1$, then we have $$P\equiv 0.$$ Our result complements a classical result of algebraic differential independence of the Euler …
We develop a new method for proving algebraic independence of $G$-functions. Our approach rests on the following observation: $G$-functions do not always come with a single linear differential equation, but also sometimes with an infinite family of linear difference equations associated with the Frobenius that are obtained by reduction modulo prime ideals. When these linear difference equations have order one, the coefficients of the $G$-function satisfy congruences reminiscent of a classical theorem of Lucas on binomial coefficients. We use this to derive a Kolchin-like algebraic independence…
In this paper we deduce a lower bound for the rank of a family of $p$ vectors in $\R^k$ (considered as a vector space over the rationals) from the existence of a sequence of linear forms on $\R^p$, with integer coefficients, which are small at $k$ points. This is a generalization to vectors of Nesterenko's linear independence criterion (which corresponds to $k=1$), used by Ball-Rivoal to prove that infinitely many values of Riemann zeta function at odd integers are irrational. The proof is based on geometry of numbers, namely Minkowski's theorem on convex bodies.
Milnor formulated a conjecture about rational linear independence of some special Hurwitz zeta values. The second and third authors along with Ram Murty studied this conjecture and suggested an extension of Milnor's conjecture. In this note, we investigate the number field generalisation of this extended Milnor conjecture. We indicate the motivation for considering this number field case by noting that such a phenomenon is true in an analogous context. We also study some new spaces related to normalised Hurwitz zeta values.
Let $X_{0}=\mathbb{P}^{1} - (\{0,\infty\} \cup μ_{N})\text{ }/\text{ }\mathbb{F}_{q}$, with $N \in \mathbb{N}^{\ast}$ and $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ of characteristic $p>0$ and containing a primitive $N$-th root of unity. We establish an explicit theory of the crystalline pro-unipotent fundamental groupoid of $X_{0}$. In part I, we have computed explicitly the Frobenius, and in particular cyclotomic $p$-adic multiple zeta values. In part II, we use part I to understand the algebraic relations of cyclotomic $p$-adic multiple zeta values via explicit formulas ; this is in particular a study of the harmoni…
We generalize the definition of overconvergent $p$-adic multiple polylogarithms and of $p$-adic cyclotomic multiple zeta values and we prove a bound on their norm. A byproduct of the proof is a characterization of these objects in terms of certain regularized $p$-adic iterated integrals. The generalization of the definition consists in replacing the underlying Frobenius structure by its iterations. The bound on the norms of overconvergent $p$-adic multiple polylogarithms that we obtain is a prerequisite for our subsequent papers on $p$-adic cyclotomic multiple zeta values.
For a lattice Λin the complex plane, let K_Λ be the field of Λ-elliptic functions. For two relatively prime integers p (respectively q) greater than 1, consider the endomorphisms ψ(resp. ϕ) of K_Λ given by multiplication by p (resp. q) on the elliptic curve \mathbb{C}/Λ. We prove that if f (resp. g) are complex Laurent power series that satisfy linear difference equations over K_Λ with respect to ϕ(resp. ψ) then there is a dichotomy. Either, for some sublattice Λ' of Λ, one of f or g belongs to the ring K_{Λ'}[z,z^{-1},ζ(z,Λ')], where ζ(z,Λ') is the Weierstrass zeta function, or f and g are al…
Let $f(z)$ be in $1+z\mathbb{Q}[[z]]$ and $\mathcal{S}$ be an infinite set of prime numbers such that, for all $p\in\mathcal{S}$, we can reduce $f(z)$ modulo $p$. We let $f(z)_{\mid p}$ denote the reduction of $f(z)$ modulo $p$. Generally, when $f(z)$ is D-finite, $f(z)_{\mid p}$ is algebraic over $\mathbb{F}_p(z)$. It turns out that if $f(z)$ is a solution of a polynomial of the form $X-A_p(z)X^{p^l}$, we can use this type of equations to obtain results of transcendence and algebraic independence over $\mathbb{Q}(z)$. In the present paper, we look for conditions on the differential operators …
The zeta-function of a manifold is closely related to, and sometimes can be calculated completely, in terms of its periods. We report here on a practical and computationally rapid implementation of this procedure for families of Calabi-Yau manifolds with one complex structure parameter phi. Although partly conjectural, it turns out to be possible to compute the matrix of the Frobenius map on the third cohomology group of X(phi) directly from the Picard-Fuchs differential operator of the family. To illustrate our method, we compute tables of the quartic numerators of the zeta-functions for six …
Let $F_n$ and $L_n$ be the Fibonacci and Lucas numbers, respectively. Four corresponding zeta functions in $s$ are defined by \[ζ_F(s) \,:=\, \sum_{n=1}^{\infty} \frac{1}{F_n^s}\,,\quad ζ_F^*(s) \,:=\,\sum_{n=1}^{\infty} \frac{{(-1)}^{n+1}}{F_n^s}\,,\quad ζ_L(s) \,:=\, \sum_{n=1}^{\infty} \frac{1}{L_n^s}\,,\quad ζ_L^*(s) \,:=\, \sum_{n=1}^{\infty} \frac{{(-1)}^{n+1}}{L_n^s} \,.\] For positive integers $s$ the transcendence of these values is known as well as algebraic independence or dependence results for sets of these numbers. In this paper, we investigate linear forms in the above zeta func…
In a recent paper with Sprang and Zudilin, the following result was proved: if $a$ is large enough in terms of $\varepsilon>0$, then at least $2^{(1-\varepsilon)\frac{\log a}{\log \log a}}$ values of the Riemann zeta function at odd integers between $3$ and $a$ are irrational. This improves on the Ball-Rivoal theorem, that provides only $\frac{1-\varepsilon}{1+\log 2} \log a$ such irrational values -- but with a stronger property: they are linearly independent over the rationals. In the present paper we generalize this recent result to both $L$-functions of Dirichlet characters and Hurwitz zeta…
A difference equation analogue of the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equation is exhibited by developing a theory of the generating function $H(z)$ of Hurwitz polyzeta functions to parallel that of the polylogarithms. By emulating the role of the KZ equation as a connection on a suitable bundle, a difference equation version of the notion of connection is developed for which $H(z)$ is a flat section. Solving a family of difference equations satisfied by the Hurwitz polyzetas leads to the normalized multiple Bernoulli polynomials (NMBPs) as the counterpart to the Hurwitz polyzeta functions, at tuples o…
