In a recent paper with Sprang and Zudilin, the following result was proved: if $a$ is large enough in terms of $\varepsilon>0$, then at least $2^{(1-\varepsilon)\frac{\log a}{\log \log a}}$ values of the Riemann zeta function at odd integers between $3$ and $a$ are irrational. This improves on the Ball-Rivoal theorem, that provides only $\frac{1-\varepsilon}{1+\log 2} \log a$ such irrational values -- but with a stronger property: they are linearly independent over the rationals. In the present paper we generalize this recent result to both $L$-functions of Dirichlet characters and Hurwitz zeta function. The strategy is different and less elementary: the construction is related to a Padé approximation problem, and a generalization of Shidlovsky's lemma is used to apply Siegel's linear independence criterion. We also improve the analogue of the Ball-Rivoal theorem in this setting: we obtain $\frac{1-\varepsilon}{1+\log 2} \log a$ linearly independent values $L(f,s)$ with $s\leq a$ of a fixed parity, when $f$ is a Dirichlet character. The new point here is that the constant $1+\log 2$ does not depend on $f$.
The knowledge on irrationality of p-adic zeta values has recently progressed. The irrationality of zeta_2(2), ζ_2(3) and of a few other p-adic series of Dirichlet was obtained by F. Calegari. F. Beukers gave a more elementary proof of this result. In parallel, T. Rivoal has just obtained, in the complex case, some Pade approximants of Lerch functions. It is this work which, transposed to C_p, enables us to obtain results of irrationality and linear independence.
In this paper we follow the approach of Bertrand-Beukers (and of later work of Bertrand), based on differential Galois theory, to prove a very general version of Shidlovsky's lemma that applies to Pad{é} approximation problems at several points, both at functional and numerical levels (i.e., before and after evaluating at a specific point). This allows us to obtain a new proof of the Ball-Rivoal theorem on irrationality of infinitely many values of Riemann zeta function at odd integers, inspired by the proof of the Siegel-Shidlovsky theorem on values of E-functions: Shidlovsky's lemma is used …
We provide a general theorem for evaluating trigonometric Dirichlet series of the form $\sum_{n \geq 1} \frac{f (πn τ)}{n^s}$, where $f$ is an arbitrary product of the elementary trigonometric functions, $τ$ a real quadratic irrationality and $s$ an integer of the appropriate parity. This unifies a number of evaluations considered by many authors, including Lerch, Ramanujan and Berndt. Our approach is based on relating the series to combinations of derivatives of Eichler integrals and polylogarithms.
We introduce and study a new complexity function in combinatorics on words, which takes into account the smallest second occurrence time of a factor of an infinite word. We characterize the eventually periodic words and the Sturmian words by means of this function. Then, we establish a new result on repetitions in Sturmian words and show that it is best possible. Let $b \ge 2$ be an integer. We deduce a lower bound for the irrationality exponent of real numbers whose sequence of $b$-ary digits is a Sturmian sequence over $\{0,1,\ldots, b-1\}$ and we prove that this lower bound is best possible…
In this article we study analytic properties of the multiple Dirichlet series associated to additive and Dirichlet characters. For the multiple Dirichlet series associated to additive characters, the meromorphic continuation is established via obtaining translation formulas satisfied by these multiple Dirichlet series. While it seems difficult to obtain such a translation formula for the multiple Dirichlet series associated to Dirichlet characters, we rely on their intrinsic connection with the multiple Dirichlet series associated to additive characters in order to investigate their analytic c…
In this article, we obtain the analytic continuation of the multiple shifted Lucas zeta function, multiple Lucas $L$-function associated to Dirichlet characters and additive characters. We then compute a complete list of exact singularities and residues of these functions at these poles. Further, we show the rationality of the multiple Lucas $L$-functions associated with quadratic characters at negative integer arguments.
A method of estimating sums of multiplicative functions braided with Dirichlet characters is demonstrated, leading to a taxonomy of the characters for which such sums are large.
In a recent work on Euler-type formulae for even Dirichlet beta values, i.e. $β{(2n)}$, I have derived an exact closed-form expression for a class of zeta series. From this result, I have conjectured closed-form summations for two families of zeta series. Here in this work, I begin by using a known formula by Wilton to prove those conjectures. As example of applications, some special cases are explored, yielding rapidly converging series representations for the Apéry constant, $ζ(3)$, and the Catalan constant, $G = β(2)$. Interestingly, our series for $\,ζ(3)\,$ converges faster than that used…
We prove that suitable properties of the twists by Dirichlet characters of an L-function of degree 2 imply that its Euler product is of polynomial type.
We evaluate the average of cubic and quartic Dirichlet character sums with the modulus going up to a size comparable to the length of the individual sums. This generalizes a result of Conrey, Farmer and Soundararajan on quadratic Dirichlet character sums.
We obtain by simple elementary method, the character average of fourth power of Dirichlet L-series at unity. This result seems to be new.We also obtain character average of second power of Dirichlet L-series at unity, using the power series in second variable of Hurwitz zeta function at unity.
Katz showed that the L-functions of all Dirichlet characters of F_q(t), with conductor a fixed power of a degree one prime, are equidistributed in the limit as q goes to infinity. We generalize this statement to the L-functions of twists of an arbitrary Galois representation by Dirichlet characters, including independence of the L-functions of twists of different representations by the same Dirichlet character. A similar generalization, without the independence statement, for characters with squarefree conductor, was proven by Hall, Keating, and Roditty-Gershon.
The Postnikov character formula is used to express large portions of a Dirichlet character sum in terms of quadratic exponential sums. The quadratic sums are then computed using an analytic algorithm previously derived by the author. This leads to a power-saving if the modulus is smooth enough. As an application, a fast, and potentially practical, method to compute Dirichlet L-functions with complexity exponent 1/3 for smooth enough moduli is derived.
We use the $q$-analogue of van der Corput's method to estimate short character sums to smooth moduli. If $χ$ is a primitive Dirichlet character modulo a squarefree, $q^δ$-smooth integer $q$ we show that $$L(\frac12,χ)\ll_εq^{\frac{27}{164}+O(δ)+ε}.$$
Let $\mathbb{A}=\mathbb{F}_q[T]$ be the polynomial ring over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. In this article, we prove a generalization of Tóth identity on $\mathbb{A}$ involving arithmetical functions, multiplicative and additive characters.
Using some basic properties of the gamma function, we evaluate a simple class of infinite products involving Dirichlet characters as a finite product of gamma functions and, in the case of odd characters, as a finite product of sines. As a consequence we obtain evaluations of certain multiple $L$-series. In the final part of this paper we derive expressions for infinite products of cyclotomic polynomials, again as finite products of gamma or of sine functions.
For a given Dirichlet character $χ(n) = e^{i θ_n}$, we prove central limit theorems for the series $\sum_{p'} \cos θ_{p'}$ for non-principal characters, and $\sum_{p' } \cos (t \log p')$ for principal characters, where $p'$ are integers based on a variant of Cramér's random model for the primes. For non-principal characters, we use these results to show that the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis for the associated $L$-function is true with probability equal to one. For principal characters we propose how to extend these arguments to $\Re (s) = t \to \infty$.
Let $χ$ be a Dirichlet character (mod $n$) with conductor $d$. In a quite recent paper Zhao and Cao deduced the identity $\sum_{k=1}^n (k-1,n) χ(k)= φ(n)τ(n/d)$, which reduces to Menon's identity if $χ$ is the principal character (mod $n$). We generalize the above identity by considering even functions (mod $n$), and offer an alternative approach to proof. We also obtain certain related formulas concerning Ramanujan sums.
We construct a class of companion elliptic functions associated with the even Dirichlet characters. Using the well-known properties of the classical Weierstrass elliptic function $\wp(z|τ)$ as the blueprint, we will derive their representations in terms of $q$-series and partial fractions, explore the significance of the coefficients of their power series expansions and establish the modular properties under the actions of the arithmetic groups $Γ_0(N)$ and $Γ_1(N)$.
For a rational valued periodic function, we associate a Dirichlet series and provide a new necessary and sufficient condition for the vanishing of this Dirichlet series specialized at positive integers. This question was initiated by Chowla, and carried out by Okada for a particular infinite sum. Our approach relies on the decomposition of the Dirichlet characters in terms of primitive characters. Using this, we find some new family of natural numbers for which a conjecture of Erdös holds. We also characterize rational valued periodic functions for which the associated Dirichlet series vanishe…
An algorithm to compute Dirichlet $L$-functions for many quadratic characters is derived. The algorithm is optimal (up to logarithmic factors) provided that the conductors of the characters under consideration span a dyadic window.
In this paper, we give an asymptotic formula for the second moment of Dirichlet twists of an automorphic $L$-function $L(s, π)$ on the critical line averaged over characters and conductors, where $π$ denotes an irreducible tempered cuspidal automorphic representation of $\textrm{GL}_{4}$ with unitary central character. We give some hybrid bound for the error term with respect to the size of conductors of Dirichlet characters and that of the automorphic representation.
Let $χ$ be a primitive Dirichlet character modulo $q$ and $L(s,χ)$ be the Dirichlet L-function associated to $χ$. Using a new two-piece mollifier we show that $L(\tfrac{1}{2},χ)\ne0$ for at least 34% of the characters in the family.
We study the double character sum $\sum\limits_{\substack{m\leq X,\\m\odd}}\sum\limits_{\substack{n\leq Y,\\n\odd}}\leg mn$ and its smoothly weighted counterpart. An asymptotic formula with power saving error term was obtained by Conrey, Farmer and Soundararajan by applying the Poisson summation formula. The result is interesting, because the main term involves a non-smooth function. In this paper, we apply the inverse Mellin transform twice and study the resulting double integral that involves a double Dirichlet series. This method has two advantages -- it leads to a better error term, and th…
This paper improves the upper bound for the exceptional zeroes of Dirichlet L-functions with even characters. The result is obtained by improving on explicit estimate for $L'(σ;χ)$ for $σ$ close to unity, using a result on the average of Dirichlet characters, and on the lower bound for $L(1;χ)$, with computational aid.
Let $ψ$ be a real primitive character modulo $D$. If the $L$-function $L(s,ψ)$ has a real zero close to $s=1$, known as a Landau-Siegel zero, then we say the character $ψ$ is exceptional. Under the hypothesis that such exceptional characters exist, we prove that at least fifty percent of the central values $L(1/2,χ)$ of the Dirichlet $L$-functions $L(s,χ)$ are nonzero, where $χ$ ranges over primitive characters modulo $q$ and $q$ is a large prime of size $D^{O(1)}$. Under the same hypothesis we also show that, for almost all $χ$, the function $L(s,χ)$ has at most a simple zero at $s = 1/2$.
Menon's identity is a classical identity involving gcd sums and the Euler totient function $ϕ$. In a recent paper, Zhao and Cao derived the Menon-type identity $\sum\limits_{\substack{k=1}}^{n}(k-1,n)χ(k) = ϕ(n)τ(\frac{n}{d})$, where $χ$ is a Dirichlet character mod $n$ with conductor $d$. We derive an identity similar to this replacing gcd with a generalization it. We also show that some of the arguments used in the derivation of Zhao-Cao identity can be improved if one uses the method we employ here.
We establish an analogue of a conjecture of Balasubramanian, Conrey, and Heath-Brown for the family of all Dirichlet characters with conductor up to $Q$. This forms another application of our work in developing an asymptotic large sieve.
We prove that more than nine percent of the central values $L(\frac{1}{2},χ_p)$ are non-zero, where $p\equiv 1 \pmod{8}$ ranges over primes and $χ_p$ is the real primitive Dirichlet character of conductor $p$. Previously, it was not known whether a positive proportion of these central values are non-zero. As a by-product, we obtain the order of magnitude of the second moment of $L(\frac{1}{2},χ_p)$, and conditionally we obtain the order of magnitude of the third moment. Assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, we show that our lower bound for the second moment is asymptotically sharp.
Let C(q,+) be the set of even, primitive Dirichlet characters (mod q). Using the mollifier method we show that L^{(k)}(1/2,chi) is not equal to zero for almost all the characters chi in C(q,+) when k and q are large. Here, L^{(k)}(s,chi) is the k-th derivative of of the Dirichlet L-function L(s,chi).
The classical Menon's identity [7] states that \begin{equation*}\label{oldbegin1} \sum_{\substack{a\in\Bbb Z_n^\ast }}\gcd(a -1,n)=φ(n) σ_{0} (n), \end{equation*} where for a positive integer $n$, $\Bbb Z_n^\ast$ is the group of units of the ring $\Bbb Z_n=\Bbb Z/n\Bbb Z$, $\gcd(\ ,\ )$ represents the greatest common divisor, $φ(n)$ is the Euler's totient function and $σ_{k} (n) =\sum_{d|n } d^{k}$ is the divisor function. In this paper, we generalize Menon's identity with Dirichlet characters in the following way: \begin{equation*} \sum_{\substack{a\in\Bbb Z_n^\ast b_1, ..., b_k\in\Bbb Z_n}} …
For any natural number $n$, let $X'_n$ be the set of primitive Dirichlet characters modulo $n$. We show that if the Riemann hypothesis is true, then the inequality $|X'_{2n_k}|\le C_2 e^{-γ} ϕ(2n_k)/\log\log(2n_k)$ holds for all $k\ge 1$, where $n_k$ is the product of the first $k$ primes, $γ$ is the Euler-Mascheroni constant, $C_2$ is the twin prime constant, and $ϕ(n)$ is the Euler function. On the other hand, if the Riemann hypothesis is false, then there are infinitely many $k$ for which the same inequality holds and infinitely many $k$ for which it fails to hold.
We obtain the extended genus field of an abelian extension of a rational function field. We follow the definition of Anglès and Jaulent, which uses class field theory. First we show that the natural definition of extended genus field of a cyclotomic function field obtained by means of Dirichlet characters is the same as the one given by Anglès and Jaulent. Next we study the extended genus field of a finite abelian extension of a rational function field along the lines of the study of genus fields of abelian extensions of rational function fields and compare this approach with the one given by …
Extending a result of Heath-Brown, we establish an asymptotic formula for the fourth moment of central values of Dirichlet $L$-functions attached to primitive characters $\pmod q$.
In a previous paper we proved that if an $L$-function $F$ from the Selberg class has degree $2$, its conductor $q_F$ is a prime number and $F$ is weakly twist-regular at all primes $p\neq q_F$, then $F$ has a polynomial Euler product. In this paper we extend this result to $L$-functions of degree 2 with square-free conductor $q_F$, which are weakly twist-regular at all primes $p\nmid q_F$
Let $f\in S_k(Γ_{0}(N))$ be a normalized Hecke eigenform of even integral weight $k$ and level $N$. Let $j\ge1$ be a positive integer. We prove that for almost all primes $p$, $p\nmid N$, and for all characters $χ_{0}=\pm 1\pmod N$, the sequence $\left(χ_{0}(p^{nj})a(p^{nj})\right)_{n\in\N}$ has infinitely many sign changes. We also obtain a similar result for the sequence $\left(a(p^{j(1+2n)})\right)_{n\in\N}$ when $j$ is odd.
We give a geometric criterion for Dirichlet $L$-functions associated to cyclic characters over the rational function field $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$ to vanish at the central point $s=1/2$. The idea is based on the observation that vanishing at the central point can be interpreted as the existence of a map from the projective curve associated to the character to some abelian variety over $\mathbb{F}_q$. Using this geometric criterion, we obtain a lower bound on the number of cubic characters over $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$ whose $L$-functions vanish at the central point where $q=p^{4n}$ for any rational prime $…
Fix a Hecke cusp form $f$, and consider the $L$-function of $f$ twisted by a primitive Dirichlet character. As we range over all primitive characters of a large modulus $q$, what is the average behavior of the square of the central value of this $L$-function? Stefanicki proved an asymptotic valid only for $q$ having very few prime factors, and we extend this to almost all $q$.
In this paper, we prove a large sieve inequality for quartic Dirichlet characters. The result is analogous to large sieve inequalities for the quadratic and cubic Dirichlet characters.
