For any natural number $n$, let $X'_n$ be the set of primitive Dirichlet characters modulo $n$. We show that if the Riemann hypothesis is true, then the inequality $|X'_{2n_k}|\le C_2 e^{-γ} ϕ(2n_k)/\log\log(2n_k)$ holds for all $k\ge 1$, where $n_k$ is the product of the first $k$ primes, $γ$ is the Euler-Mascheroni constant, $C_2$ is the twin prime constant, and $ϕ(n)$ is the Euler function. On the other hand, if the Riemann hypothesis is false, then there are infinitely many $k$ for which the same inequality holds and infinitely many $k$ for which it fails to hold.
Assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis (GRH), we show using the asymptotic large sieve that 91% of the zeros of primitive Dirichlet $L$-functions are simple. This improves on earlier work of Özlük which gives a proportion of at most 86%. We further compute an $q$-analogue of the Pair Correlation Function $F(α)$ averaged over all primitive Dirichlet $L$-functions in the range $|α| < 2$ . Previously such a result was available only when the average included all the characters $χ$.
We study the family of Dirichlet $L$-functions of all even primitive characters of conductor at most $Q$, where $Q$ is a parameter tending to $\infty$. For an arbitrary positive integer $k$, we approximate the twisted $2k$th moment of this family by using Dirichlet polynomial approximations of $L^k(s,χ)$ of length $X$, with $Q<X<Q^2$. Assuming the Generalized Lindelöf Hypothesis, we prove an asymptotic formula for these approximations of the twisted moments. Our result agrees with the prediction of Conrey, Farmer, Keating, Rubinstein, and Snaith for this family of $L$-functions, and provides t…
Katz and Sarnak conjectured that the statistics of low-lying zeros of various family of $L$-functions matched with the scaling limit of eigenvalues from the random matrix theory. In this paper we confirm this statistic for a family of primitive Dirichlet $L$-functions matches up with corresponding statistic in the random unitary ensemble, in a range that includes the off-diagonal contribution. To estimate the $n$-level density of zeros of the $L$-functions, we use the asymptotic large sieve method developed by Conrey, Iwaniec and Soundararajan. For the random matrix side, a formula from Conrey…
In this paper we obtain some new estimates for the number of large values of Dirichlet polynomials. Our results imply new zero density estimates for the Riemann zeta function which give a small improvement on results of Bourgain and Jutila.
To obtain the Dirichlet series for complex powers of the Riemann zeta function, we define and study the basic properties of a sequence of polynomials that, used as coefficients of the respective terms of the Dirichlet series of the Riemann zeta function in the half plane $x > 1$, produces the required exponential function. Unlike the method described in ([4], p.~278), which requires more advanced knowledge of the relationships between Dirichlet series and multiplicative arithmetic functions, our approach only needs mathematical induction on the total number of prime divisors of $n$, the Dirich…
Zeros of the Riemann zeta function and its derivatives have been studied by many mathematicians. Among, the number of zeros and the distribution of the real part of non-real zeros of the derivatives of the Riemann zeta function have been investigated by Berndt, Levinson, Montgomery, Akatsuka, and the author. Berndt, Levinson, and Montgomery investigated the unconditional case, while Akatsuka and the author gave sharper estimates under the truth of the Riemann hypothesis. In this paper, we prove similar results related to the first derivative of the Dirichlet $L$-functions associated with primi…
In this work we discuss Dirichlet products evaluated at Fibonacci numbers. As first applications of the results we get a representation of Fibonacci numbers in terms of Euler's totient function, an upper bound on the number of primitive prime divisors and representations of some related Euler products. Moreover, we sum functions over all primitive divisors of a Fibonacci number and obtain a non--trivial fixed point of this operation.
In this paper we address the problem of computing asymptotic formulae for the expected values and second moments of central values of primitive Dirichlet $L$-functions $L(1/2,χ_{8d}\otimesψ)$ when $ψ$ is a fixed even primitive non-quadratic character of odd modulus $q$, $χ_{8d}$ is a primitive quadratic character, $d\equiv h\pmod r$ is odd and squarefree and $r\equiv0\pmod q$ is even. Restricting to these arithmetic progressions ensures that the resulting sets of $L$-functions each form a ``family of primitive $L$-functions" in the specific sense defined by Conrey, Farmer, Keating, Rubinstein …
Fix a Hecke cusp form $f$, and consider the $L$-function of $f$ twisted by a primitive Dirichlet character. As we range over all primitive characters of a large modulus $q$, what is the average behavior of the square of the central value of this $L$-function? Stefanicki proved an asymptotic valid only for $q$ having very few prime factors, and we extend this to almost all $q$.
We prove an explicit upper bound of the function $S(t,χ)$, defined by the argument of Dirichlet $L$-functions. An explicit upper bound of the function $S_1(t)$, defined by the integral of the argument of the Riemann zeta-function, have already been obtained by A. Fujii. Our result is obtained by applying an idea of Fujii's result on $S_1(t)$. The constant part of the explicit upper bound of $S(t,χ)$ in this paper does not depend on a primitive Dirichlet character $χ\pmod {q>1}$.
We have established novel integral representations of the Riemann zeta-function and Dirichlet eta-function based on powers of trigonometric functions and digamma function, and then use these representations to find close forms of Laurent series expansions of these same powers of trigonometric functions and digamma function. The so obtained series can be used to find numerous summation rules for certain values of the Riemann zeta and related functions and numbers, such as e.g. Bernoulli and Euler numbers.
We construct in a Sonine Space of entire functions a subspace related to the Riemann zeta function and we show that the quotient contains vectors intrinsically attached to the non-trivial zeros and their multiplicities.
We discuss how one could study asymptotics of cyclotomic quantities via the mean values of certain multiplicative functions and their Dirichlet series using a theorem of Delange. We show how this could provide a new approach to Artin's conjecture on primitive roots. We focus on whether a fixed prime has a certain order modulo infinitely many other primes. We also give an estimate for the mean value of one such Dirichlet series.
A new zerofree region of the Riemann Zeta-function $ζ$ is identified by using Turán's localization criterion linking zeros of $ζ$ with uniform local suprema of sets of Dirichlet polynomials expanded over the primes. The proof is based on a randomization argument. An estimate for local extrema for some finite families of shifted Dirichlet polynomials, % associated to linearly independent sequences of reals is established by preliminary considering their local increment properties, by means of Montgomery-Vaughan's variant of Hilbert's inequality. A covering argument combined with Turán's localiz…
The finite Dirichlet series from the title are defined by the condition that they vanish at as many initial zeroes of the zeta function as possible. It turned out that such series can produce extremely good approximations to the values of Riemann's zeta function inside the critical strip. In addition, the coefficients of these series have remarkable number-theoretical properties discovered in large scale high accuracy numerical experiments. So far no theoretical explanation to the observed phenomena was found.
In this note we define L-functions of finite graphs and study the particular case of finite cycles in the spirit of a previous paper that studied spectral zeta functions of graphs. The main result is a suggestive equivalence between an asymptotic functional equation for these L-functions and the corresponding case of the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis. We also establish a relation between the positivity of such functions and the existence of real zeros in the critical strip of the classical Dirichlet L-functions with the same character.
A well known result of Iwaniec and Sarnak states that for at least one third of the primitive Dirichlet characters to a large modulus q, the associated L-functions do not vanish at the central point. When q is a large power of a fixed prime, we prove the same proportion already among the primitive characters of any given order. The set of primitive characters modulo q of a given order can be described as an orbit under the action of the Galois group of the corresponding cyclotomic field. We also prove a positive proportion of nonvanishing within substantially shorter orbits generated by interm…
In this paper, we give Dirichlet series with periodic coefficients that have Riemann's functional equation and real zeros of Dirichlet $L$-functions. The details are as follows. Let $L(s,χ)$ be the Dirichlet $L$-function and $G(χ)$ be the Gauss sum associate with a primitive Dirichlet character $χ$ (${\rm{mod}} \,\, q$). Put $f (s,χ) := q^s L(s,χ) + i^{-κ(χ)} G(χ) L(s,\overlineχ)$, where $\overlineχ$ is the complex conjugate of $χ$ and $κ(χ) :=(1-χ(-1))/2$. Then we prove that $f (s,χ)$ satisfies Riemann's functional equation appearing in Hamburger's theorem if $χ$ is even. In addition, we show…
A q-analogue of the Riemann zeta function was studied in [Kaneko et al. 03] via a certain q-series of two variables. We introduce in a similar way a q-analogue of the Dirichlet L-functions and make a detailed study of them, including some issues concerning the classical limit of the q-analogue left open in [Kaneko et al. 03]. We also examine a "crystal" limit (i.e. q->0) behavior of the q-analogue. The q-trajectories of the trivial and essential zeros of the Riemann zeta function are investigated numerically when q moves in (0,1]. Moreover, conjectures for the crystal limit behavior of zeros o…
In this note, we prove that given a Hecke-Maass cusp form $f$ for $SL_2(\mathbb{Z})$ and a sufficiently large integer $q=q_1q_2$ with $q_j\asymp \sqrt{q}$ being prime numbers for $j=1,2$, there exists a primitive Dirichlet character $χ$ of conductor $q$ such that $L\left(\frac{1}{2},f\otimes χ\right)L\left(\frac{1}{2},χ\right)\neq 0$. To prove this, we establish asymptotic formulas of $L\left(\frac{1}{2},f\otimes χ\right)L\left(\frac{1}{2},χ\right)$ over the family of even primitive Dirichlet characters $χ$ of conductor $q$ for more general $q$.
Conditionally on the Riemann hypothesis we prove asymptotic formulae for mean values of various long Dirichlet polynomials involving the von Mangoldt function. Our results avoid the use of correlation sum estimates although in addition to the Riemann hypothesis we must assume that our Dirichlet polynomials have weights from a specific class whose transforms are sufficiently concentrated near the origin. We also give large deviation estimates for these long Dirichlet polynomials.
We show that for a positive proportion of fundamental discriminants d, L(1/2,chi_d) != 0. Here chi_d is the primitive quadratic Dirichlet character of conductor d.
Let $f$ be a Hecke-Maass cusp form for the full modular group and let $χ$ be a primitive Dirichlet character modulo a prime $q$. Let $s_0=σ_0+it_0$ with $\frac{1}{2}\leqσ_0<1$. We improve the error term for the first moment of $L(s_0,f\otimesχ)\overline{L(s_0,χ)}$ over the family of even primitive Dirichlet characters. As an application, we show that for any $t\in\mathbb{R}$, there exists a primitive Dirichlet character $χ$ modulo $q$ for which $L(1/2+it,f\otimesχ)L(1/2+it,χ)\neq0$ if the prime $q$ satisfies $q\gg (1+|t|)^{\frac{543}{25}+\varepsilon}$.
We provide efficient methods to evaluate the Riemann zeta, the Lerch zeta and the Dirichlet $L$-functions. The method uses the Riemann-Siegel (RS) type formulas and a modified double exponential (MDE) quadrature method near the saddle point of appropriate integrands. We provide simplified derivations of the RS formulas, containing finite series sums and residual integrals, for the Lerch and the Dirichlet $L$-functions. The MDE method allows us to remove the contribution of the singularities near the contour of integration for the residual integrals. The method allows us to evaluate the residua…
We show that for at least $\frac{5}{13}$ of the primitive Dirichlet characters $χ$ of large prime modulus, the central value $L(\frac{1}{2},χ)$ does not vanish, improving on the previous best known result of $\frac{3}{8}$.
A new definition for the Dirichlet beta function for positive integer arguments is discovered and presented for the first time. This redefinition of the Dirichlet beta function, based on the polygamma function for some special values, provides a general method for obtaining all special constants associated with Dirichlet beta function. We also show various new and fundamental relations between the polygamma function, Riemann zeta, the even-indexed euler numbers, the Dirichlet beta functions in a way never seen or imagined before.
Let $ψ$ be a real primitive character modulo $D$. If the $L$-function $L(s,ψ)$ has a real zero close to $s=1$, known as a Landau-Siegel zero, then we say the character $ψ$ is exceptional. Under the hypothesis that such exceptional characters exist, we prove that at least fifty percent of the central values $L(1/2,χ)$ of the Dirichlet $L$-functions $L(s,χ)$ are nonzero, where $χ$ ranges over primitive characters modulo $q$ and $q$ is a large prime of size $D^{O(1)}$. Under the same hypothesis we also show that, for almost all $χ$, the function $L(s,χ)$ has at most a simple zero at $s = 1/2$.
Let $χ$ be a primitive Dirichlet character modulo $q$ and $L(s,χ)$ be the Dirichlet L-function associated to $χ$. Using a new two-piece mollifier we show that $L(\tfrac{1}{2},χ)\ne0$ for at least 34% of the characters in the family.
Let $χ$ a primitive character$\pmod q$ and consider the Dirichlet $L$-function $$L(s,χ)=\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}\frac{χ(n)}{n^s}.$$ We give a new proof of an upper bound of Heath-Brown for $|L(s,χ)|$ on the critical line $s=1/2+it$
Improving earlier work of Balasubramanian, Conrey and Heath-Brown, we obtain an asymptotic formula for the mean-square of the Riemann zeta-function times an arbitrary Dirichlet polynomial of length $T^{1/2 + δ}$, with $δ= 0.01515....$ As an application we obtain an upper bound of the correct order of magnitude for the third moment of the Riemann zeta-function. We also refine previous work of Deshouillers and Iwaniec, obtaining asymptotic estimates in place of bounds. Using the work of Watt, we compute the mean-square of the Riemann zeta-function times a Dirichlet polynomial of length going up …
Let $χ$ be a primitive Dirichlet character of conductor $q$ and let us denote by $L(z, χ)$ the associated $L$-series. In this paper, we provide an explicit upper bound for $\left|L(1, χ)\right|$ when $χ$ is a primitive even Dirichlet character with $χ(2)=1$.
We use the $q$-analogue of van der Corput's method to estimate short character sums to smooth moduli. If $χ$ is a primitive Dirichlet character modulo a squarefree, $q^δ$-smooth integer $q$ we show that $$L(\frac12,χ)\ll_εq^{\frac{27}{164}+O(δ)+ε}.$$
In this mainly expository article, we revisit some formal aspects of B{á}ez-Duarte's criterion for the Riemann hypothesis. In particular, starting from Weingartner's formulation of the criterion, we define an arithmetical function $ν$, which is equal to the M{ö}bius function if, and only if the Riemann hypothesis is true. We record the basic properties of the Dirichlet series of $ν$, and state a few questions. KEYWORDS: Riemann hypothesis, arithmetical functions, Dirichlet series, Hilbert space
We look at the values of two Dirichlet $L$-functions at the Riemann zeros (or a horizontal shift of them). Off the critical line we show that for a positive proportion of these points the pairs of values of the two $L$-functions are linearly independent over $\mathbb{R}$, which, in particular, means that their arguments are different. On the critical line we show that, up to height $T$, the values are different for $cT$ of the Riemann zeros for some positive $c$.
The paper considers a method for converting a divergent Dirichlet series into a convergent Dirichlet series by directly converting the coefficients of the original series $1\rightarrowδ_{n}(s)$ for the Riemann Zeta function. In the first part of the paper, we study the properties of the coefficients $δ^*_n$ of a finite Dirichlet series for approximating the Riemann Zeta function on the interval $Δ{H}$. In general, the coefficients $δ^*_n$ of a finite Dirichlet series are complex numbers. The dependence of the coefficients $δ^*_n$ of a finite Dirichlet series on the ordinal number of the coeffi…
We extend the results obtained by E. Ntienjem to all positive integers. Let $\EuFrak{N}$ be the subset of $\mathbb{N}$ consisting of $\,2^ν\mho$, where $ν$ is in $\{0,1,2,3\}$ and $\mho$ is a squarefree finite product of distinct odd primes. We discuss the evaluation of the convolution sum, $\underset{\substack{ {(l,m)\in\mathbb{N}^{2}} {α\,l+β\,m=n} } }{\sum}σ(l)σ(m)$, when $αβ$ is in $\mathbb{N}\setminus\EuFrak{N}$. The evaluation of convolution sums belonging to this class is achieved by applying modular forms and primitive Dirichlet characters. In addition, we revisit the evaluation of the…
For any real $β_0\in[\tfrac12,1)$, let ${\rm GRH}[β_0]$ be the assertion that for every Dirichlet character $χ$ and all zeros $ρ=β+iγ$ of $L(s,χ)$, one has $β\leβ_0$ (in particular, ${\rm GRH}[\frac12]$ is the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis). In this paper, we show that the validity of ${\rm GRH}[\frac{9}{10}]$ depends only on certain distributional properties of the zeros of the Riemann zeta function $ζ(s)$. No conditions are imposed on the zeros of nonprincipal Dirichlet $L$-functions.
The purpose of this paper is to generalize our earlier work on the logarithm of the Riemann zeta-function to linear combinations of logarithms of primitive Dirichlet $L$-functions with constant real coefficients. Under the assumption of suitable hypotheses, we prove that as $T\to \infty $, a sequence of the form $(a_1\log|L(ρ,χ_n)|+\dots+a_1\log|L(ρ,χ_n)|)$ has an approximate Gaussian distribution with mean $0$ and variance $ \tfrac{1}{2}\big({a_1}^2+\dots+{a_n}^2 \big)\log\log T$. Here $a_1, \dots, a_n \in \mathbb{R}$, each of the $χ_i$ is a primitive Dirichlet character modulo $M_i$ with $M_…
Let C(q,+) be the set of even, primitive Dirichlet characters (mod q). Using the mollifier method we show that L^{(k)}(1/2,chi) is not equal to zero for almost all the characters chi in C(q,+) when k and q are large. Here, L^{(k)}(s,chi) is the k-th derivative of of the Dirichlet L-function L(s,chi).
We present some monotonicity results for Dirichlet $L$-functions associated to real primitive characters. We show in particular that these Dirichlet $L$-functions are far from being logarithmically completely monotonic. Also, we show that, unlike in the case of the Riemann zeta function, the problem of comparing the signs of $\frac{d^k}{ds^k}\log L(s,χ)$ at any two points $s_1, s_2>1$ is more subtle.
A well-known result, due to Dirichlet and later generalized by de la Vallee-Poussin, expresses a relationship between the sum of fractional parts and the Euler-Mascheroni constant. In this paper, we prove an asymptotic relationship between the summation of the products of fractional parts with powers of integers on one hand, and the values of the Riemann zeta function, on the other hand. Dirichlet's classical result falls as a particular case of this more general theorem.
We show under the Generalised Riemann Hypothesis that for every $δ>0$, almost every prime $q$ in $[Q,2Q]$ has the expected of prime primitive roots in the interval $[x,x+x^{\frac{1}2+δ}]$ provided $Q$ is not more than $x^{\frac{2}{3}-ε}$. We obtain this via a variant of the classical truncated Perron's formula for the partial sums of the coefficients of a Dirichlet series.
We give a conditional result on the constant in the Báez-Duarte reformulation of the Nyman-Beurling criterion for the Riemann Hypothesis. We show that assuming the Riemann hypothesis and that $\sum_ρ\frac{1}{|ζ'(ρ)|^2}\ll T^{3/2-δ}$, for some $δ>0$, the value of this constant coincides with the lower bound given by Burnol.
We calculate mean values of $\operatorname{GL}_n$-automorphic $L$-functions twisted by primitive even Dirichlet characters of prime-power conductor, at arbitrary points within the critical strip, by derivation of special Voronoi summation formulae. Our calculation is novel in that the twisted sum can be expressed in terms of the average itself, and also that it sees the derivation of various new summation formulae in the setting of prime-power modulus. One consequence, as we explain, is to show the analytic continuation and additive summation formulae for hyper-Kloosterman Dirichlet series ass…
