In this paper, we give Dirichlet series with periodic coefficients that have Riemann's functional equation and real zeros of Dirichlet $L$-functions. The details are as follows. Let $L(s,χ)$ be the Dirichlet $L$-function and $G(χ)$ be the Gauss sum associate with a primitive Dirichlet character $χ$ (${\rm{mod}} \,\, q$). Put $f (s,χ) := q^s L(s,χ) + i^{-κ(χ)} G(χ) L(s,\overlineχ)$, where $\overlineχ$ is the complex conjugate of $χ$ and $κ(χ) :=(1-χ(-1))/2$. Then we prove that $f (s,χ)$ satisfies Riemann's functional equation appearing in Hamburger's theorem if $χ$ is even. In addition, we show that $f (σ,χ) \ne 0$ all $σ\ge 1$. Moreover, we prove that $f(σ,χ) \ne 0$ for all $1/2 \le σ< 1$ if and only if $L(σ,χ) \ne 0$ for all $1/2 \le σ< 1$. When $χ$ is real, all zeros of $f(s,χ)$ with $\Re (s) >0$ are on the line $σ=1/2$ if and only if GRH for $L(s,χ)$ is true. However, $f (s,χ)$ has infinitely many zeros off the critical line $σ=1/2$ if $χ$ is non-real.
In this paper we obtain some new estimates for the number of large values of Dirichlet polynomials. Our results imply new zero density estimates for the Riemann zeta function which give a small improvement on results of Bourgain and Jutila.
To obtain the Dirichlet series for complex powers of the Riemann zeta function, we define and study the basic properties of a sequence of polynomials that, used as coefficients of the respective terms of the Dirichlet series of the Riemann zeta function in the half plane $x > 1$, produces the required exponential function. Unlike the method described in ([4], p.~278), which requires more advanced knowledge of the relationships between Dirichlet series and multiplicative arithmetic functions, our approach only needs mathematical induction on the total number of prime divisors of $n$, the Dirich…
Zeros of the Riemann zeta function and its derivatives have been studied by many mathematicians. Among, the number of zeros and the distribution of the real part of non-real zeros of the derivatives of the Riemann zeta function have been investigated by Berndt, Levinson, Montgomery, Akatsuka, and the author. Berndt, Levinson, and Montgomery investigated the unconditional case, while Akatsuka and the author gave sharper estimates under the truth of the Riemann hypothesis. In this paper, we prove similar results related to the first derivative of the Dirichlet $L$-functions associated with primi…
We prove an explicit upper bound of the function $S(t,χ)$, defined by the argument of Dirichlet $L$-functions. An explicit upper bound of the function $S_1(t)$, defined by the integral of the argument of the Riemann zeta-function, have already been obtained by A. Fujii. Our result is obtained by applying an idea of Fujii's result on $S_1(t)$. The constant part of the explicit upper bound of $S(t,χ)$ in this paper does not depend on a primitive Dirichlet character $χ\pmod {q>1}$.
We have established novel integral representations of the Riemann zeta-function and Dirichlet eta-function based on powers of trigonometric functions and digamma function, and then use these representations to find close forms of Laurent series expansions of these same powers of trigonometric functions and digamma function. The so obtained series can be used to find numerous summation rules for certain values of the Riemann zeta and related functions and numbers, such as e.g. Bernoulli and Euler numbers.
We construct in a Sonine Space of entire functions a subspace related to the Riemann zeta function and we show that the quotient contains vectors intrinsically attached to the non-trivial zeros and their multiplicities.
A new zerofree region of the Riemann Zeta-function $ζ$ is identified by using Turán's localization criterion linking zeros of $ζ$ with uniform local suprema of sets of Dirichlet polynomials expanded over the primes. The proof is based on a randomization argument. An estimate for local extrema for some finite families of shifted Dirichlet polynomials, % associated to linearly independent sequences of reals is established by preliminary considering their local increment properties, by means of Montgomery-Vaughan's variant of Hilbert's inequality. A covering argument combined with Turán's localiz…
The finite Dirichlet series from the title are defined by the condition that they vanish at as many initial zeroes of the zeta function as possible. It turned out that such series can produce extremely good approximations to the values of Riemann's zeta function inside the critical strip. In addition, the coefficients of these series have remarkable number-theoretical properties discovered in large scale high accuracy numerical experiments. So far no theoretical explanation to the observed phenomena was found.
In this note we define L-functions of finite graphs and study the particular case of finite cycles in the spirit of a previous paper that studied spectral zeta functions of graphs. The main result is a suggestive equivalence between an asymptotic functional equation for these L-functions and the corresponding case of the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis. We also establish a relation between the positivity of such functions and the existence of real zeros in the critical strip of the classical Dirichlet L-functions with the same character.
For any natural number $n$, let $X'_n$ be the set of primitive Dirichlet characters modulo $n$. We show that if the Riemann hypothesis is true, then the inequality $|X'_{2n_k}|\le C_2 e^{-γ} ϕ(2n_k)/\log\log(2n_k)$ holds for all $k\ge 1$, where $n_k$ is the product of the first $k$ primes, $γ$ is the Euler-Mascheroni constant, $C_2$ is the twin prime constant, and $ϕ(n)$ is the Euler function. On the other hand, if the Riemann hypothesis is false, then there are infinitely many $k$ for which the same inequality holds and infinitely many $k$ for which it fails to hold.
A q-analogue of the Riemann zeta function was studied in [Kaneko et al. 03] via a certain q-series of two variables. We introduce in a similar way a q-analogue of the Dirichlet L-functions and make a detailed study of them, including some issues concerning the classical limit of the q-analogue left open in [Kaneko et al. 03]. We also examine a "crystal" limit (i.e. q->0) behavior of the q-analogue. The q-trajectories of the trivial and essential zeros of the Riemann zeta function are investigated numerically when q moves in (0,1]. Moreover, conjectures for the crystal limit behavior of zeros o…
Conditionally on the Riemann hypothesis we prove asymptotic formulae for mean values of various long Dirichlet polynomials involving the von Mangoldt function. Our results avoid the use of correlation sum estimates although in addition to the Riemann hypothesis we must assume that our Dirichlet polynomials have weights from a specific class whose transforms are sufficiently concentrated near the origin. We also give large deviation estimates for these long Dirichlet polynomials.
We provide efficient methods to evaluate the Riemann zeta, the Lerch zeta and the Dirichlet $L$-functions. The method uses the Riemann-Siegel (RS) type formulas and a modified double exponential (MDE) quadrature method near the saddle point of appropriate integrands. We provide simplified derivations of the RS formulas, containing finite series sums and residual integrals, for the Lerch and the Dirichlet $L$-functions. The MDE method allows us to remove the contribution of the singularities near the contour of integration for the residual integrals. The method allows us to evaluate the residua…
A new definition for the Dirichlet beta function for positive integer arguments is discovered and presented for the first time. This redefinition of the Dirichlet beta function, based on the polygamma function for some special values, provides a general method for obtaining all special constants associated with Dirichlet beta function. We also show various new and fundamental relations between the polygamma function, Riemann zeta, the even-indexed euler numbers, the Dirichlet beta functions in a way never seen or imagined before.
A lower bound for the dimension of the $\Q$-vector space spanned by special values of a Dirichlet series with periodic coefficients is given. As a corollary, it is deduced that both special values at even integers and at odd integers contain infinitely many irrational numbers. This result is proved by T.Rivoal if the function considered is the Riemann zeta function, and this paper gives its generalization to more general Dirichlet series.
Improving earlier work of Balasubramanian, Conrey and Heath-Brown, we obtain an asymptotic formula for the mean-square of the Riemann zeta-function times an arbitrary Dirichlet polynomial of length $T^{1/2 + δ}$, with $δ= 0.01515....$ As an application we obtain an upper bound of the correct order of magnitude for the third moment of the Riemann zeta-function. We also refine previous work of Deshouillers and Iwaniec, obtaining asymptotic estimates in place of bounds. Using the work of Watt, we compute the mean-square of the Riemann zeta-function times a Dirichlet polynomial of length going up …
In this mainly expository article, we revisit some formal aspects of B{á}ez-Duarte's criterion for the Riemann hypothesis. In particular, starting from Weingartner's formulation of the criterion, we define an arithmetical function $ν$, which is equal to the M{ö}bius function if, and only if the Riemann hypothesis is true. We record the basic properties of the Dirichlet series of $ν$, and state a few questions. KEYWORDS: Riemann hypothesis, arithmetical functions, Dirichlet series, Hilbert space
We look at the values of two Dirichlet $L$-functions at the Riemann zeros (or a horizontal shift of them). Off the critical line we show that for a positive proportion of these points the pairs of values of the two $L$-functions are linearly independent over $\mathbb{R}$, which, in particular, means that their arguments are different. On the critical line we show that, up to height $T$, the values are different for $cT$ of the Riemann zeros for some positive $c$.
The paper considers a method for converting a divergent Dirichlet series into a convergent Dirichlet series by directly converting the coefficients of the original series $1\rightarrowδ_{n}(s)$ for the Riemann Zeta function. In the first part of the paper, we study the properties of the coefficients $δ^*_n$ of a finite Dirichlet series for approximating the Riemann Zeta function on the interval $Δ{H}$. In general, the coefficients $δ^*_n$ of a finite Dirichlet series are complex numbers. The dependence of the coefficients $δ^*_n$ of a finite Dirichlet series on the ordinal number of the coeffi…
For any real $β_0\in[\tfrac12,1)$, let ${\rm GRH}[β_0]$ be the assertion that for every Dirichlet character $χ$ and all zeros $ρ=β+iγ$ of $L(s,χ)$, one has $β\leβ_0$ (in particular, ${\rm GRH}[\frac12]$ is the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis). In this paper, we show that the validity of ${\rm GRH}[\frac{9}{10}]$ depends only on certain distributional properties of the zeros of the Riemann zeta function $ζ(s)$. No conditions are imposed on the zeros of nonprincipal Dirichlet $L$-functions.
A well-known result, due to Dirichlet and later generalized by de la Vallee-Poussin, expresses a relationship between the sum of fractional parts and the Euler-Mascheroni constant. In this paper, we prove an asymptotic relationship between the summation of the products of fractional parts with powers of integers on one hand, and the values of the Riemann zeta function, on the other hand. Dirichlet's classical result falls as a particular case of this more general theorem.
We give a conditional result on the constant in the Báez-Duarte reformulation of the Nyman-Beurling criterion for the Riemann Hypothesis. We show that assuming the Riemann hypothesis and that $\sum_ρ\frac{1}{|ζ'(ρ)|^2}\ll T^{3/2-δ}$, for some $δ>0$, the value of this constant coincides with the lower bound given by Burnol.
We address the question of non-vanishing of $L(1,f)$ where $f$ is an algebraic-valued, periodic arithmetical function. We do this by characterizing algebraic-valued, periodic functions $f$ for which $L(1,f)=0$. The case of odd functions was resolved by Baker, Birch and Wirsing in 1973. We apply a result of Bass to obtain a characterization for the even functions. We also describe a theorem of the first two authors which says that it is enough to consider only the even and the odd functions in order to obtain a complete characterization.
For any periodic function $f:{\mathbb N} \to {\mathbb C}$ with period $q$, we study the Dirichlet series $L(s,f):=\sum_{n\geq 1} f(n)/n^s.$ It is well-known that this admits an analytic continuation to the entire complex plane except at $s=1$, where it has a simple pole with residue $$ρ:= q^{-1}\sum_{1\leq a\leq q} f(a).$$ Thus, the function is analytic at $s=1$ when $ρ=0$ and in this case, we study its non-vanishing using the theory of linear forms in logarithms and Dirichlet $L$-series. In this way, we give new proofs of an old criterion of Okada for the non-vanishing of $L(1,f)$ as well as …
Let $a=(a_n)_{n\ge 1}$ be a periodic sequence, $F_a(s)$ the meromorphic continuation of $\sum_{n\ge 1} a_n/n^s$, and $N_a(σ_1, σ_2, T)$ the number of zeros of $F_a(s)$, counted with their multiplicities, in the rectangle $σ_1 < \Re s < σ_2$, $|\Im s | \le T$. We extend previous results of Laurinčikas, Kaczorowski, Kulas, and Steuding, by showing that if $F_a(s)$ is not of the form $P(s) L_χ (s)$, where $P(s)$ is a Dirichlet polynomial and $L_χ(s)$ a Dirichlet L-function, then there exists an $η=η(a)>0$ such that for all $1/2 < σ_1 < σ_2 < 1+η$, we have $c_1 T \le N_a(σ_1, σ_2, T) \le c_2 T$ fo…
In this paper we study sums of Dirichlet series whose coefficients are terms of the Thue-Morse sequence and variations thereof. We find closed-form expressions for such sums in terms of known constants and functions including the Riemann zeta function and the Dirichlet eta function using elementary methods.
A new method for continuing the usual Dirichlet series that defines the Riemann zeta function $ζ(s)$ is presented. Numerical experiments demonstrating the computational efficacy of the resulting continuation are discussed.
We introduce Möbius functions of higher rank, a new class of arithmetic functions so that the classical Möbius function is of rank 2. With this idea, we evaluate Dirichlet series on the sum of the reciprocal square of all $r$-free numbers. For the proof, the Riemann zeta function and cyclotomic polynomials play a key role.
For a rational valued periodic function, we associate a Dirichlet series and provide a new necessary and sufficient condition for the vanishing of this Dirichlet series specialized at positive integers. This question was initiated by Chowla, and carried out by Okada for a particular infinite sum. Our approach relies on the decomposition of the Dirichlet characters in terms of primitive characters. Using this, we find some new family of natural numbers for which a conjecture of Erdös holds. We also characterize rational valued periodic functions for which the associated Dirichlet series vanishe…
In the present paper, we prove that the generalized Riemann hypothesis for the Dirichlet $L$-function $L(s,χ)$ is equivalent to the following bound: Let $k \geq 1$ and $\ell$ be positive real numbers. For any $ε>0$, we have \begin{align*} \sum_{n=1}^{\infty} \frac{χ(n) μ(n)}{n^{k}} \exp \left(- \frac{ x}{n^{\ell}}\right) = O_{ε,k,\ell} \bigg(x^{-\frac{k}{\ell}+\frac{1}{2 \ell} + ε}\bigg), \quad \mathrm{as}\,\, x \rightarrow \infty, \end{align*} where $χ$ is a primitive Dirichlet character modulo $q$, and $μ(n)$ denotes the Möbius function. This bound generalizes the previous bounds given by Ri…
We study the fourth moment of quadratic Dirichlet $L$-functions at $s= \frac{1}{2}$. We show an asymptotic formula under the generalized Riemann hypothesis, and obtain a precise lower bound unconditionally. The proofs of these results follow closely arguments of Soundararajan and Young [19] and Soundararajan [17].
Series acceleration formulas are obtained for Dirichlet series with periodic coefficients. Special cases include Ramanujan's formula for the values of the Riemann zeta function at the odd positive integers exceeding two, and related formulas for values of Dirichlet L-series and the Lerch zeta function. Such formulas have been made famous by Lerch, Ramanujan, Grosswald, Berndt, and others. The approach herein is based on the partial fraction expansion of the hyperbolic cotangent, and as such is somewhat more elementary than previous approaches, yet is quite general.
The class of Dirichlet series associated with a periodic arithmetical function $f$ includes the Riemann zeta-function as well as Dirichlet $L$-functions to residue class characters. We study the value-distribution of these Dirichlet series $L(s;f)$, resp. their analytic continuation in the neighborhood of the critical line (which is the abscissa of symmetry of the related Riemann-type functional equation). In particular, for a fixed complex number $a\neq 0$, we prove for an even or odd periodic $f$ the number of $a$-points of the $Δ$-factor of the functional equation, prove the existence of th…
The relation between Eisenstein series and the $J$-homomorphism is an important topic in chromatic homotopy theory at height $1$. Both sides are related to the special values of the Riemann $ζ$-function. Number theorists have studied the twistings of the Riemann $ζ$-functions and Eisenstein series by Dirichlet characters. Motivated by the Dirichlet equivariance of these Eisenstein series, we introduce the Dirichlet $J$-spectra in this paper. The homotopy groups of the Dirichlet $J$-spectra are related to the special values of the Dirichlet $L$-functions. Moreover, we find Brown-Comenetz duals …
