Let $ψ$ be a real primitive character modulo $D$. If the $L$-function $L(s,ψ)$ has a real zero close to $s=1$, known as a Landau-Siegel zero, then we say the character $ψ$ is exceptional. Under the hypothesis that such exceptional characters exist, we prove that at least fifty percent of the central values $L(1/2,χ)$ of the Dirichlet $L$-functions $L(s,χ)$ are nonzero, where $χ$ ranges over primitive characters modulo $q$ and $q$ is a large prime of size $D^{O(1)}$. Under the same hypothesis we also show that, for almost all $χ$, the function $L(s,χ)$ has at most a simple zero at $s = 1/2$.
We show that for a positive proportion of fundamental discriminants d, L(1/2,chi_d) != 0. Here chi_d is the primitive quadratic Dirichlet character of conductor d.
We show that for at least $\frac{5}{13}$ of the primitive Dirichlet characters $χ$ of large prime modulus, the central value $L(\frac{1}{2},χ)$ does not vanish, improving on the previous best known result of $\frac{3}{8}$.
We prove that given a Hecke-Maass form $f$ for $\text{SL}(2, \mathbb{Z})$ and a sufficiently large prime $q$, there exists a primitive Dirichlet character $χ$ of conductor $q$ such that the $L$-values $L(\tfrac{1}{2}, f \otimes χ)$ and $L(\tfrac{1}{2}, χ)$ do not vanish. We expect the same method to work for any large integer $q$.
In this note, we prove that given a Hecke-Maass cusp form $f$ for $SL_2(\mathbb{Z})$ and a sufficiently large integer $q=q_1q_2$ with $q_j\asymp \sqrt{q}$ being prime numbers for $j=1,2$, there exists a primitive Dirichlet character $χ$ of conductor $q$ such that $L\left(\frac{1}{2},f\otimes χ\right)L\left(\frac{1}{2},χ\right)\neq 0$. To prove this, we establish asymptotic formulas of $L\left(\frac{1}{2},f\otimes χ\right)L\left(\frac{1}{2},χ\right)$ over the family of even primitive Dirichlet characters $χ$ of conductor $q$ for more general $q$.
The aim of this paper is to improve the upper bound for the exceptional zeroes $β_0$ of Dirichlet $L$-functions. We do this by improving on explicit estimate for $L'(σ, χ)$ for $σ$ close to unity.
This paper improves the upper bound for the exceptional zeroes of Dirichlet L-functions with even characters. The result is obtained by improving on explicit estimate for $L'(σ;χ)$ for $σ$ close to unity, using a result on the average of Dirichlet characters, and on the lower bound for $L(1;χ)$, with computational aid.
Let $ϕ= \sum_{r^{2} \leq 4mn}c(n,r)q^{n}ζ^{r}$ be a Jacobi form of weight $k$ (with $k > 2$ if $ϕ$ is not a cusp form) and index $m$ with integral algebraic coefficients which is an eigenfunction of all Hecke operators $T_{p}, (p,m) = 1,$ and which has at least one nonvanishing coefficient $c(n,r)$ with $r$ prime to $m$. We prove that for almost all primes $\ell$ there are infinitely many fundamental discriminants $D = r^{2}-4mn < 0$ prime to $m$ with $ν_{\ell}(c(n,r)) = 0$, where $ν_{\ell}$ denotes a continuation of the $\ell$-adic valuation on $\mathbb{Q}$ to an algebraic closure. As applica…
We prove that for $d \in \{ 2,3,5,7,13 \}$ and $K$ a quadratic (or rational) field of discriminant $D$ and Dirichlet character $χ$, if a prime $p$ is large enough compared to $D$, there is a newform $f \in S_2(Γ_0(dp^2))$ with sign $(+1)$ with respect to the Atkin-Lehner involution $w_{p^2}$ such that $L(f \otimes χ,1) \neq 0$. This result is obtained through an estimate of a weighted sum of twists of $L$-functions which generalises a result of Ellenberg. It relies on the approximate functional equation for the $L$-functions $L(f \otimes χ, \cdot)$ and a Petersson trace formula restricted to A…
We prove that the Dirichlet $L$-functions associated with Dirichlet characters in $\mathbb{F}_{q}[x]$ are universal. That is, given a modulus of high enough degree, $L$-functions with characters to this modulus can be found that approximate any given nonvanishing analytic function arbitrarily closely.
An explicit Dirichlet series is obtained, which represents an analytic function of $s$ in the half-plane $\Re s>1/2$ except for having simple poles at points $s_j$ that correspond to exceptional eigenvalues $λ_j$ of the non-Euclidean Laplacian for Hecke congruence subgroups $Γ_0(N)$ by the relation $λ_j=s_j(1-s_j)$ for $j=1,2,..., S$. Coefficients of the Dirichlet series involve all class numbers $h_d$ of real quadratic number fields. But, only the terms with $h_d\gg d^{1/2-ε}$ for sufficiently large discriminants $d$ contribute to the residues $m_j/2$ of the Dirichlet series at the poles $s_j…
A well known result of Iwaniec and Sarnak states that for at least one third of the primitive Dirichlet characters to a large modulus q, the associated L-functions do not vanish at the central point. When q is a large power of a fixed prime, we prove the same proportion already among the primitive characters of any given order. The set of primitive characters modulo q of a given order can be described as an orbit under the action of the Galois group of the corresponding cyclotomic field. We also prove a positive proportion of nonvanishing within substantially shorter orbits generated by interm…
Let $f$ be a holomorphic cusp form of integral weight $k \geq 3$ for $Γ_{0}(N)$ with nebentypus character $ψ$. Generalising work of Kohnen and Raghuram we construct a kernel function for the $L$-function $L(f,χ,s)$ of $f$ twisted by a primitive Dirichlet character $χ$ and use it to show that the average $\sum_{f \in S_{k}(N,ψ)}\frac{L(f,χ,s)}{<f,f>}\bar{a_{f}(1)}$ over an orthogonal basis of $S_{k}(N,ψ)$ does not vanish on certain line segments inside the critical strip if the weight $k$ or the level $N$ is big enough. As another application of the kernel function we prove an averaged version …
We prove that the existence of exceptional real zeroes of Dirichlet $L$-functions would lead to cancellations in the sum $\sum_{p\leq x} \Kl(1, p)$ of Kloosterman sums over primes, and also to sign changes of $\Kl(1, n)$, where $n$ runs over integers with exactly two prime factors. Our arguments involve a variant of Bombieri's sieve, bounds for twisted sums of Kloosterman sums, and work of Fouvry and Michel on sums of $\left| \Kl(1, n)\right|$.
Let pi be an automorphic representation on GL(r, A_Q) for r=1, 2, or 3. Let d be a fundamental discriminant and chi_d the corresponding quadratic Dirichlet character. We consider the question of the least d, relative to the data (level, weight or eigenvalue) of pi, such that the central value of the twisted L-series is nonzero, i.e. L(1/2, pi x chi_d) != 0. For example, let N be the level of pi. Using multiple Dirichlet series, we prove the nonvanishing of a central twisted $L$-value with d << N^{1/2} for GL(1), d << N^1 for GL(2), and d << N^2 for GL(3), the last case assuming that a certain …
Let $π$ and $π'$ be cuspidal automorphic representations of $\mathrm{GL}(n)$ and $\mathrm{GL}(n')$ with unitary central characters. We establish a new zero-free region for all $\mathrm{GL}(1)$-twists of the Rankin-Selberg $L$-function $L(s,π\timesπ')$, generalizing Siegel's celebrated work on Dirichlet $L$-functions. As an application, we prove the first unconditional Siegel-Walfisz theorem for the Dirichlet coefficients of $-L'(s,π\timesπ')/L(s,π\timesπ')$. Also, for $n\leq 8$, we extend the region of holomorphy and nonvanishing for the twisted symmetric power $L$-functions $L(s,π,\mathrm{Sym…
We consider the Fourier expansions of automorphic forms on general Lie groups, with a particular emphasis on exceptional groups. After describing some principles underlying known results on GL(n), Sp(4), and G_2, we perform an analysis of the expansions on split real forms of E_6 and E_7 where simplifications take place for automorphic realizations of real representations which have small Gelfand-Kirillov dimension. Though the character varieties are more complicated for exceptional groups, we explain how the nonvanishing Fourier coefficients for small representations behave analogously to Fou…
The Euler product formula relates Dirichlet $L(s,χ)$ functions to an infinite product over primes, and is known to be valid for $\Re (s) >1$, where it converges absolutely. We provide arguments that the formula is actually valid for $\Re (s) > 1/2$ in a specific sense. Namely, the logarithm of the Euler product, although formally divergent, is meaningful because it is Cesàro summable, and its Cesàro average converges to $\log L (s,χ)$. Our argument relies on the prime number theorem, an Abel transform, and a central limit theorem for the Random Walk of the Primes, the series $\sum_{n=1}^N \cos…
