Let $X$ be a real separable normed space $X$ admitting a separating polynomial. We prove that each continuous function from a subset $A$ of $X$ to a real Banach space can be uniformly approximated by restrictions to $A$ of functions which are analytic on open subsets of $X$. Also we prove that each continuous function to a complex Banach space from a complex separable normed space admitting a separating $*$-polynomial can be uniformly approximated by $*$-analytic functions.
We introduce a new $2$-norm on a normed space using a semi-inner product $g$ on the space. Using the $2$-norm, we propose a formula for the $g$-angle between $2$-dimensional subspaces in the space. Our formula serves as a revision of the one proposed by Nur {\it et al.} \cite{Nur1}.
The aim of this note is to study existence and main properties of direct and inverse limits in the category of normed $L^0$-modules (in the sense of Gigli) over a metric measure space.
In this article, we investigate a new characterization of the parallelogram law in a normed linear space. We give equivalent conditions to the paralleogram law, in terms of the homogeneous property of a continuous positive definite function on the normed space.
Best approximation (BA) is an interesting field in functional analysis that has attracted a lot of attention from many researchers for a very long period of time up-to-date. Of greatest consideration is the characterization of the Chebyshev set (CS) which is a subset of a normed linear space (NLS) which contains unique BAs. However, a fundamental question remains unsolved to-date regarding the convexity of the CS in infinite NLS known as the CS problem. The question which has not been answered is: Is every CS in a NLS convex?. This question has not got any solution including the simplest form …
A linear operator $T$ between two lattice-normed locally solid Riesz spaces is said to be $p_τ$-continuous if, for any $p_τ$-null net $(x_α)$, the net $(Tx_α)$ is $p_τ$-null, and $T$ is also said to be $p_τ$-bounded operator if it sends $p_τ$-bounded subsets to $p_τ$-bounded subsets. They are generalize several known classes of operators such as continuous, order continuous, $p$-continuous, order bounded, $p$-bounded operators, etc. We also study $up_τ$-continuous operators between lattice-normed locally solids Riesz spaces.
A function $f$ defined on a 2-normed space $ (X,||.,.||)$ is ward continuous if it preserves quasi-Cauchy sequences where a sequence $(x_n)$ of points in $X$ is called quasi-Cauchy if $lim_{n\rightarrow\infty}||Δx_{n},z||=0$ for every $z\in X$. Some other kinds of continuties are also introduced via quasi-Cauchy sequences in 2-normed spaces. It turns out that uniform limit of ward continuous functions is again ward continuous.
In this article we investigate some general properties of the multiplier algebras of normed spaces of continuous functions (NSCF). In particular, we prove that the multiplier algebra inherits some of the properties of the NSCF. We show that it is often possible to construct NSCF's which only admit constant multipliers. In order to do that, using a method from [23], we prove that any separable Banach space can be realized as a NSCF over any separable metrizable space. On the other hand, we give a sufficient condition for non-separability of a multiplier algebra.
Given a non-negative weight $v$, not necessarily bounded or strictly positive, defined on a domain $G$ in the complex plane, we consider the weighted space $H_v^\infty(G)$ of all holomorphic functions on $G$ such that the product $v|f|$ is bounded in $G$ and study the question of when is such a space complete under the canonical sup-seminorm. We obtain both some necessary and some sufficient conditions in terms of the weight $v$, exhibit several relevant examples, and characterize completeness in the case of spaces with radial weights on balanced domains.
A function $f$ defined on a subset $E$ of a two normed space $X$ is statistically ward continuous if it preserves statistically quasi-Cauchy sequences of points in $E$ where a sequence $(x_n)$ is statistically quasi-Cauchy if $(Δx_{n})$ is a statistically null sequence. A subset $E$ of $X$ is statistically ward compact if any sequence of points in $E$ has a statistically quasi-Cauchy subsequence. In this paper, new kinds of continuities are investigated in two normed spaces. It turns out that uniform limit of statistically ward continuous functions is again statistically ward continuous.
Norm estimates for strongly continuous semigroups have been successfully studied in numerous settings, but at the moment there are no corresponding studies in the case of solution operators of singular integral equations. Such equations have recently garnered a large amount of interest due to their potential to model numerous physically relevant phenomena with increased accuracy by incorporating so-called non-local effects. In this article, we provide the first step in the direction of providing such estimates for a particular class of operators which serve as solutions to certain integral equ…
In this paper, we apply the publication of Joung (2009) to derive a stability result for for the second order linear functional equation: $f(x) = pf(x-1)-qf(x-2)$ for all $x\in\mathbb R$, where $f$ is a mapping from $\mathbb R$ into the induced random space of any Banach space. By relaxing the lower bound assumption, we also generalize the result of Jung (2009) on arbitrary random normed spaces with the minimum $t$-norm. However, we need the monotonicity of the distribution in the lower bound assumption. By the properties of normal distributions, our main result can be applied.
A linear operator $T$ between two vector lattices normed by locally solid Riesz spaces is said to be $p_τ$-continuous if, for any $p_τ$-null net $(x_α)$, the net $(Tx_α)$ is $p_τ$-null, and $T$ is said to be $p_τ$-bounded operator if it sends $p_τ$-bounded subsets to $p_τ$-bounded subsets. Also, $T$ is called $p_τ$-compact if, for any $p_τ$-bounded net $(x_α)$, the net $(Tx_α)$ has a $p_τ$-convergent subnet. They generalize several known classes of operators such as norm continuous, order continuous, $p$-continuous, order bounded, $p$-bounded, compact and AM-compact operators. We study the gen…
The s-th forward difference sequence that tends to zero, inspired by the consecutive terms of a sequence approaching zero, is examined in this study. Functions that take sequences satisfying this condition to sequences satisfying the same condition are called s-ward continuous. Inclusion theorems that are related to this kind of uniform continuity and continuity are also considered. Additionally, the concept of $s$-ward compactness of a subset of $X$ via $s$-quasi-Cauchy sequences are investigated. One finds out that the uniform limit of any sequence of $s$-ward continuous function is $s$-ward…
Let X, Y be asymmetric normed spaces and Lc(X, Y) the convex cone of all linear continuous operators from X to Y. It is known that in general, Lc(X, Y) is not a vector space. The aim of this note is to prove, using the Baire category theorem, that if Lc(X, Y) is a vector space for some asymmetric normed space Y , then X is isomorphic to its associated normed space (the converse is true for every asymmetric normed space Y and is easy to establish). For this, we introduce an index of symmetry of the space X denoted c(X) $\in$ [0, 1] and we give the link between the index c(X) and the fact that L…
In this short note, we show by elementary computations that the notion of non-Archimedean fuzzy normed (and 2-normed) spaces is void. Namely, there are no strictly convex spaces at all --not even the zero-dimensional linear space. Before this, we also study the case of strictly convex non-Archimedean normed spaces; in this setting we see that the only nonzero linear space (defined over an arbitrary non-Archimedean field) that satisfies this property is the one-dimensional linear space over $\mathbb{Z}/3\mathbb{Z}$. Consequently, the results that have been proven for this class of spaces, like …
We consider linear narrow operators on lattice-normed spaces. We prove that, under mild assumptions, every finite rank linear operator is strictly narrow (before it was known that such operators are narrow). Then we show that every dominated, order continuous linear operator from a lattice-normed space over atomless vector lattice to an atomic lattice-normed space is order narrow.
In this note we generalize the well-known Wigner's unitary-anti\-unitary theorem. For $X$ and $Y$ smooth normed spaces and $f:X\to Y$ a surjective mapping such that $|[f(x),f(y)]|=|[x,y]|$, $x,y\in X$, where $[\cdot,\cdot]$ is the unique semi-inner product, we show that $f$ is phase equivalent to either a linear or an anti-linear surjective isometry. When $X$ and $Y$ are smooth real normed spaces and $Y$ strictly convex, we show that Wigner's theorem is equivalent to $\{\|f(x)+f(y)\|,\|f(x)-f(y)\|\}=\{\|x+y\|,\|x-y\|\}$, $x,y\in X$.
In this paper, we prove that if $E$ is a uniquely remotal subset of a real normed linear space $X$ such that $E$ has a Chebyshev center $c \in X$ and the farthest point map $F:X\rightarrow E$ restricted to $[c,F(c)]$ is partially statistically continuous at $c$, then $E$ is a singleton. We obtain a necessary condition on uniquely remotal subsets of uniformly rotund Banach spaces to be a singleton. Moreover, we show that there exists a remotal set $M$ having a Chebyshev center $c$ such that the farthest point map $F:\mathbb{R}\rightarrow M$ is not continuous at $c$ but is partially statisticall…
The aim of this article is to extend results of Maslyuchenko O., Mykhaylyuk V. Popov M. about narrow operators on vector lattices. We give a new definition of a narrow operator where a vector lattice as the domain space of a narrow operator is replaced with a lattice-normed space. We prove that every GAM-compact (bo)-norm continuous linear operator from a Banach-Kantorovich space V to a Banach lattice Y is narrow. Then we show that, under some mild conditions, a continuous dominated operator is narrow if and only if its exact dominant is narrow.
In this paper, we study some features of n-normed spaces with respect to norms of its quotient spaces. We define continuous functions with respect to the norms of its quotient spaces and show that all types of continuity are equivalent. We also study contractive mappings on n- normed spaces using the same approach. In particular, we prove a fixed point theorem for contractive mappings on a closed and bounded set in an n-normed space.
We establish a criterion to decide when a countable projective limit of countable inductive limits of normed spaces is bornological. We compare the conditions occurring within our criterion with well-known abstract conditions from the context of homological algebra and with conditions arising within the investigation of weighted PLB-spaces of continuous functions.
In this paper, we work on the structure of soft linear spaces over a field K and investigate some of its properties. Here, we use the concept of the soft point which was introduced in [2,6]. We then introduce the soft norm in soft linear spaces. Finally, we examine the properties of this soft normed space and present some investigations about soft continuous operators in the space.
We prove various reconstruction theorems about open subsets of normed spaces. E.g. if the uniformly continuous homeomorphism groups of two such sets are isomorphic, then this isomorphism is induced by a uniformly continuous homeomorphism between these open sets.
The aim of this note is to introduce the space D_{U}(V,W) of the dominated Uryson operators on lattice-normed spaces. We prove an "Up-and-down" type theorem for a positive abstract Uryson operator defined on a vector lattice and taking values in a Dedekind complete vector lattice. This result we apply to prove the decomposability of the lattice valued norm of the space D_{U}(V,W) of all dominated Uryson operators. We obtain that, for a lattice-normed space V and a Banach-Kantorovich space W the space D_{U}(V,W) is also a Banach-Kantorovich space. We prove that under some mild conditions, a dom…
In this note one tries to venture into a study of some notions, in the context of a (unital) normed algebra, in particular the algebra of operators on a Hilbert space. Namely, one considers ``moving norms'', i.e.\ norming an element minus a scalar multiple of the unity and related notions, and goes into obtaining some rather nice assertions.
A linear operator $T$ between two lattice-normed spaces is said to be $p$-compact if, for any $p$-bounded net $x_α$, the net $Tx_α$ has a $p$-convergent subnet. $p$-Compact operators generalize several known classes of operators such as compact, weakly compact, order weakly compact, $AM$-compact operators, etc. Similar to $M$-weakly and $L$-weakly compact operators, we define $p$-$M$-weakly and $p$-$L$-weakly compact operators and study some of their properties. We also study $up$-continuous and $up$-compact operators between lattice-normed vector lattices.
In this paper we prove a characterization of continuity for polynomials on a normed space. Namely, we prove that a polynomial is continuous if and only if it maps compact sets into compact sets. We also provide a partial answer to the question as to whether a polynomial is continuous if and only if it transforms connected sets into connected sets. These results motivate the natural question as to how many non-continuous polynomials there are on an infinite dimensional normed space. A problem on the \emph{lineability} of the sets of non-continuous polynomials and multilinear mappings on infinit…
In this note we correct a paper by D. Kang ("On the Mazur-Ulam theorem in non-Archimedean fuzzy anti-2-normed spaces", Filomat, 2017). The research in that paper applies to what the author calls strictly convex spaces. Nevertheless, we prove that this notion is void: there is no single space that satisfies the definition.
We learn mathematics subjectively and must apply it objectively. But sometimes, we apply it subjectively by using wrong intuitions which may be elusive to our eyes. The aim of this note is to disclose the secretes of two kinds of these false intuitions and the opportunities they may provide. We first discuss the wrong assumption which says that each topology is uniquely determined by studying a very bad phenomenon happening in dealing with weak* topology. Then, we consider the problem of completing a normed space under two comparable norms, one being smaller than the other. Here, we show that …
In the first part of our note we prove that every Weakly Lindelöf Determined (WLD) (in particular, every reflexive) non-separable Banach $X$ space contains two dense linear subspaces $Y$ and $Z$ that are not densely isomorphic. This means that there are no further dense linear subspaces $Y_0$ and $Z_0$ of $Y$ and $Z$ which are linearly isomorphic. Our main result (Theorem B) concerns the existence of biorthogonal systems in normed spaces. In particular, we prove under the Continuum Hypothesis (CH) that there exists a dense linear subspace of $\ell_2(ω_1)$ (or more generally every WLD space of …
We introduce the notion centre of a convex set and study the space of continuous affine functions on a compact convex set with a centre. We show that these spaces are precisely the dual of a base normed space in which the underlying base has a (unique) centre. We also characterize the corresponding base norm space. We obtain a condition on a compact, balanced, convex subset of a locally convex space so that the corresponding space of continuous affine functions on the convex set is an absolute order unit space. Similarly, we characterize a condition on the base with a centre of a base normed s…
The aim of this paper is to present a survey of some recent results obtained in the study of spaces with asymmetric norm. The presentation follows the ideas from the theory of normed spaces (topology, continuous linear operators, continuous linear functionals, duality, geometry of asymmetric normed spaces, compact operators) emphasizing similarities as well as differences with respect to the classical theory. The main difference comes form the fact that the dual of an asymmetric normed space $X$ is not a linear space, but merely a convex cone in the space of all linear functionals on $X.$ Due …
The aim of this article is to extend results of M.~Popov and second named author about orthogonally additive narrow operators on vector lattices. The main object of our investigations are an orthogonally additive narrow operators between lattice-normed spaces. We prove that every $C$-compact laterally-to-norm continuous orthogonally additive operator from a Banach-Kantorovich space $V$ to a Banach lattice $Y$ is narrow. We also show that every dominated Uryson operator from Banach-Kantorovich space over an atomless Dedekind complete vector lattice $E$ to a sequence Banach lattice $\ell_p(Γ)$ o…
We study an equation $Qu=g$, where $Q$ is a continuous quadratic operator acting from one normed space to another normed space. Obviously, if $u$ is a solution of such equation then $-u$ is also a solution. We find conditions implying that there are no other solutions and apply them to the study of the Dirichlet boundary value problem for the partial differential equation $uΔu =g$.
In this paper, we continue the investigation of topological properties of unbounded norm (un-)topology in normed lattices. We characterize separability and second countability of un-topology in terms of properties of the underlying normed lattice. We apply our results to prove that an order continuous Banach function space $X$ over a semi-finite measure space is separable if and only if it has a $σ$-finite carrier and is separable with respect to the topology of local convergence in measure. We also address the question when a normed lattice is a normal space with respect to the un-topology.
In this paper, we generalize the concept of unbounded norm (un) convergence: let $X$ be a normed lattice and $Y$ a vector lattice such that $X$ is an order dense ideal in $Y$; we say that a net $(y_α)$ un-converges to $y$ in $Y$ with respect to $X$ if $\Bigl\lVert\lvert y_α-y\rvert \wedge x\Bigr\rVert\to 0$ for every $x\in X_+$. We extend several known results about un-convergence and un-topology to this new setting. We consider the special case when $Y$ is the universal completion of $X$. If $Y=L_0(μ)$, the space of all $μ$-measurable functions, and $X$ is an order continuous Banach function …
In the recent paper \cite{Hos}, surjective isometries, not necessarily linear, $T: {\rm AC}(X,E) \longrightarrow {\rm AC}(Y,F)$ between vector-valued absolutely continuous functions on compact subsets $X$ and $Y$ of the real line, has been described. The target spaces $E$ and $F$ are strictly convex normed spaces. In this paper, we assume that $X$ and $Y$ are compact Hausdorff spaces and $E$ and $F$ are normed spaces, which are not assumed to be strictly convex. We describe (with a short proof) surjective isometries $T: (A,\|\cdot\|_A) \longrightarrow (B,\|\cdot\|_B)$ between certain normed su…
In the present note, we are interested in bounded 2-functionals and 2-dual spaces of $L^p[0,1]$. The 2-dual spaces of the sequence space $l^p$ is considered in the literature. But interestingly an explicit computation of $Lp$ spaces has not been considered though n-duals of general normed spaces have been considered. We shall consider the 2-dual spaces with the usual $\|.\|_p$ norm and with respect to the Gähler and the Gunawan norm. The n-dual space of $L^p[0,1]$ can be treated in a similar manner.
We modify the very well known theory of normed spaces $(E, \norm)$ within functional analysis by considering a sequence $(\norm_n : n\in\N)$ of norms, where $\norm_n$ is defined on the product space $E^n$ for each $n\in\N$. Our theory is analogous to, but distinct from, an existing theory of `operator spaces'; it is designed to relate to general spaces $L^p$ for $p\in [1,\infty]$, and in particular to $L^1$-spaces, rather than to $L^2$-spaces. After recalling in Chapter 1 some results in functional analysis, especially in Banach space, Hilbert space, Banach algebra, and Banach lattice theory t…
The \emph{relative projection constant} $λ(Y, X)$ of normed spaces $Y \subset X$ is defined as $λ(Y, X) = \inf \{ ||P|| : P \in \mathcal{P}(X, Y) \}$, where $\mathcal{P}(X, Y)$ denotes the set of all continuous projections from $X$ onto $Y$. By the well-known result of Bohnenblust for every $n$-dimensional normed space $X$ and its subspace $Y$ of codimension $1$ the inequality $λ(Y, X) \leq 2 - \frac{2}{n}$ holds. The main goal of the paper is to study the equality case in the theorem of Bohnenblust. We establish an equivalent condition for the equality $λ(Y, X) = 2 - \frac{2}{n}$ and present …
It is well known that every (real or complex) normed linear space $L$ is isometrically embeddable into $C(X)$ for some compact Hausdorff space $X$. Here $X$ is the closed unit ball of $L^*$ (the set of all continuous scalar-valued linear mappings on $L$) endowed with the weak$^*$ topology, which is compact by the Banach-Alaoglu theorem. We prove that the compact Hausdorff space $X$ can indeed be chosen to be the Stone-Cech compactification of $L^*\setminus\{0\}$, where $L^*\setminus\{0\}$ is endowed with the supremum norm topology.
We consider approximations of a continuous function on a countable normed Fréchet space by analytic and $*$-analytic. Also we found a criterium of the existence of an extension of a continuous function from a dense subspace of a topological space onto the space.
The prime objective of this paper is to develop the notion of absolute continuity of functions on a more general setting outside $\R$. For this we have considered a topological space which is a measure space as well. We have built axioms for making the $σ$- algebra and measure compatible with the topology of the space. These spaces are termed as \textit{topological measure space} (in short \textit{tms}). $\R^n$ with usual topology, Lebesgue $σ$-algebra and Lebesgue measure is a relevant example of tms. Further, we have presented a new tms structure on second countable metric spaces with the de…
We investigate the completeness and completions of the normed algebras $D^{(1)}(X)$ for perfect, compact plane sets $X$. In particular, we construct a radially self-absorbing, compact plane set $X$ such that the normed algebra $D^{(1)}(X)$ is not complete. This solves a question of Bland and Feinstein. We also prove that there are several classes of connected, compact plane sets $X$ for which the completeness of $D^{(1)}(X)$ is equivalent to the pointwise regularity of $X$. For example, this is true for all rectifiably connected, polynomially convex, compact plane sets with empty interior, for…
Lecture notes on Weak Topologies: We discuss about the weak and weak star topologies on a normed linear space. Our aim is to prove the well known Banach-Alaouglu theorem and discuss some of its consequences, in particular, characterizations of reflexive spaces.
We present a fixed point theorem on topological cylinders in normed linear spaces for maps satisfying a property of stretching a space along paths. This result is a generalization of a similar theorem obtained by D. Papini and F. Zanolin. In view of the main result we discuss the existence of fixed points for maps defined on different types of domains and we propose alternative proofs for classical fixed point theorems, as Brouwer, Schauder and Krasnosel'ski\uı ones.
In this paper, we will study some properties of b-weakly compact operators and we will investigate their relationships to some variety of operators on the normed vector lattices. With some new conditions, we show that the modulus of an operator $T$ from Banach lattice $E$ into Dedekind complete Banach lattice $F$ exists and is $b$-weakly operator whenever $T$ is a $b$-weakly compact operator. We show that every Dunford-Pettis operator from a Banach lattice $E$ into a Banach space $X$ is b-weakly compact, and the converse holds whenever $E$ is an $AM$-space or the norm of $E^\prime$ is order co…
We study the K_0 group of the commutant modulo a normed ideal of an n-tuple of commuting Hermitian operators in some of the simplest cases. In case n=1, the results, under some technical conditions are rather complete and show the key role of the absolutely continuous part when the ideal is the trace-class. For a commuting n-tuple, n>2 and the Lorentz (n, 1) ideal, we show under an absolute continuity assumption that the commutant determines a canonical direct summand in K_0. Also, certain properties involving the compact ideal, established assuming quasicentral approximate units mod the norme…
