Norm estimates for strongly continuous semigroups have been successfully studied in numerous settings, but at the moment there are no corresponding studies in the case of solution operators of singular integral equations. Such equations have recently garnered a large amount of interest due to their potential to model numerous physically relevant phenomena with increased accuracy by incorporating so-called non-local effects. In this article, we provide the first step in the direction of providing such estimates for a particular class of operators which serve as solutions to certain integral equations. The provided results hold in arbitrary normed vector spaces and include the classical results for strongly continuous semigroups as a special case.
We describe a procedure to introduce Sobolev spaces and the semigroup generated by the fractional Dirichlet Laplacian on an arbitrary domain of $\R^d$. In particular, the well-definedness of the spaces of both non-homogeneous and homogeneous type together with their duality properties, embeddings, and Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities will be discussed. We also show the continuity and the smoothing property of the semigroup.
The concept of boundary values of holomorphic semigroups in a general Banach space is studied. As an application, we consider the Riemann-Liouville semigroup of integration operator in the little Hölder spaces $\rm{lip}_0^α[0,\, 1] , \, 0<α<1$ and prove that it admits a strongly continuous boundary group, which is the group of fractional integration of purely imaginary order. The corresponding result for the $L^p$-spaces ($1<p<\infty$) has been known for some time, the case $p=2$ dating back to the monograph by Hille and Phillips. In the context of $L^p$ spaces, we establish the existence of t…
We consider the fractional derivative of a general Poisson semigroup. With this fractional derivative we define the generalized fractional Littlewood-Paley $g$-function for semigroups acting on $L^p$-spaces of functions with values in Banach spaces. We give a characterization of the classes of Banach spaces for which the fractional Litlewood-Paley $g$-function is bounded on $L^p$-spaces. We show that the class of Banach spaces is independent of the order of derivation and coincides with the classical (Lusin type/cotype) case. It is also shown that the same kind of results exist for the case of…
For certain classes of negative definite symbols $q(x,ξ)$ and state space dependent Bernstein function $f(x,s)$ we prove that $-p(x,D)$, the pseudo-differential operator with symbol $-p(x,ξ)=-f(x,q(x,ξ))$, extends to the generator of a Feller semigroup. Our result extends previously known results related to operators of variable (fractional) order of differentiation, or variable order fractional powers. New concrete examples are given.
For $1<p\leq q$ we show that the Poisson semigroup $e^{-t\sqrt{-Δ}}$ on the $n$-sphere is hypercontractive from $L^{p}$ to $L^{q}$ in dimensions $n \leq 3$ if and only if $e^{-t\sqrt{n}} \leq \sqrt{\frac{p-1}{q-1}}$. We also show that the equivalence fails in large dimensions.
Let $X$ be a Banach space, and $T:[0,\infty)\rightarrow {\mathcal{L}}(X,X),$ the bounded linear operators on $X.$ A family $\{T(t)\}_{t\ge 0}\subseteq {% \mathcal{L}}(X,X)$ is called a one-parameter semigroup if $T(s+t)=T(s)T(t),$ and $T(0)=I,$ the identity operator on $X.$ The infinitesimal generator of the semigroup is the derivative of the semigroup at $t=0.$ The object of this paper is to introduce a (conformable) fractional semigroup of operators whose generator will be the fractional derivative of the semigroup at $t=0.$ The basic properties of such semigroups will be studied.
In this paper we study the Riemann-Liouville fractional integral of order $α>0$ as a linear operator from $L^p(I,X)$ into itself, when $1\leq p\leq \infty$, $I=[t_0,t_1]$ (or $I=[t_0,\infty)$) and $X$ is a Banach space. In particular, when $I=[t_0,t_1]$, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions to ensure its compactness. We also prove that Riemann-Liouville fractional integral defines a $C_0-$semigroup but does not defines a uniformly continuous semigroup. We close this study by presenting lower and higher bounds to the norm of this operator.
In this paper, we continue our previous research studies of exponential ultradistribution semigroups in Banach spaces. The existence and uniqueness of analytical solutions of abstract fractional relaxation equations associated with the generators of exponential ultradistribution semigroups have been considered. Some other results are also proved.
We extend results of Caffarelli--Silvestre and Stinga--Torrea regarding a characterization of fractional powers of differential operators via an extension problem. Our results apply to generators of integrated families of operators, in particular to infinitesimal generators of bounded $C_0$ semigroups and operators with purely imaginary symbol. We give integral representations to the extension problem in terms of solutions to the heat equation and the wave equation.
In this paper we obtain new characterizations of the uniformly convex and smooth Banach spaces. These characterizations are established by using Lp-boundedness properties of Littlewood-Paley functions and area integrals associated with heat semigroups and involving fractional derivatives. Our results apply for instance by considering the heat semigroups defined by Hermite and Laguerre operators that do not satisfy the Markovian property.
The aim of this paper is to establish the decay estimate for the fractional wave equation semigroup on H-type groups given by $e^{itΔ^α}$, $0<α<1$. Combing the dispersive estimate and a standard duality argument, we also derive the corresponding Strichartz inequalties.
We study continuity and Hölder continuity of $t\mapsto P_tf$, where $P_t$ is a generalized Mehler semigroup in $C_b(X)$, the space of the continuous and bounded functions from a Banach space $X$ to $R$, and $f\in C_b(X)$. The generators $L$ of such semigroups are realizations of a class of differential and pseudo-differential operators, both in finite and in infinite dimension. Examples of operators $L$ to which this theory is applicable include Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators with fractional diffusion in finite dimension, and Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators with associated strong-Feller semigroups,…
The \textit{method of semigroups} is a unifying, widely applicable, general technique to formulate and analyze fundamental aspects of fractional powers of operators $L$ and their regularity properties in related functional spaces. The approach was introduced by the author and José L.~Torrea in 2009 (arXiv:0910.2569v1). The aim of this chapter is to show how the method works in the particular case of the fractional Laplacian $L^s=(-Δ)^s$, $0<s<1$. The starting point is the semigroup formula for the fractional Laplacian. From here, the classical heat kernel permits us to obtain the pointwise for…
We use Bochner's subordination technique to obtain caloric smoothing estimates in Besov- and Triebel--Lizorkin spaces. Our new estimates extend known smoothing results for the Gauß--Weierstraß, Cauchy--Poisson and higher-order generalized Gauß--Weierstraß semigroups. Extensions to other function spaces (homogeneous, hybrid) and more general semigroups are sketched.
In this paper we show novel underlying connections between fractional powers of the Laplacian on the unit sphere and functions from analytic number theory and differential geometry, like the Hurwitz zeta function and the Minakshisundaram zeta function. Inspired by Minakshisundaram's ideas, we find a precise pointwise description of $(-Δ_{\mathbb{S}^{n-1}})^s u(x)$ in terms of fractional powers of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map on the sphere. The Poisson kernel for the unit ball will be essential for this part of the analysis. On the other hand, by using the heat semigroup on the sphere, addition…
In this paper, we provide the spectral decomposition in Hilbert space of the $\mathcal{C}_0$-semigroup $P$ and its adjoint $\hatP$ having as generator, respectively, the Caputo and the right-sided Riemann-Liouville fractional derivatives of index $1<α<2$. These linear operators, which are non-local and non-self-adjoint, appear in many recent studies in applied mathematics and also arise as the infinitesimal generators of some substantial processes such as the reflected spectrally negative $α$-stable process. Our approach relies on intertwining relations that we establish between these semigrou…
The purpose of this article is to establish upper and lower estimates for the integral kernel of the semigroup exp(-tP) associated to a classical, strongly elliptic pseudodifferential operator P of positive order on a closed manifold. The Poissonian bounds generalize those obtained for perturbations of fractional powers of the Laplacian. In the selfadjoint case, extensions to t in C_+ are studied. In particular, our results apply to the Dirichlet-to-Neumann semigroup.
In this paper, we present a complete spectral research of generalized Cesàro operators on Sobolev-Lebesgue sequence spaces. The main idea is to subordinate such operators to suitable $C_0$-semigroups on these sequence spaces. We introduce that family of sequence spaces using the fractional finite differences and we prove some structural properties similar to classical Lebesgue sequence spaces. In order to show the main results about fractional finite differences, we state equalities involving sums of quotients of Euler's Gamma functions. Finally, we display some graphical representations of th…
Let $\mathcal{L}= \partial_t- Δ_x+|x|^2$. Consider its Poisson semigroup $e^{-y\sqrt{\mathcal{L}}}$. For $α>0$ define the Parabolic Hermite-Zygmund spaces $$ Λ^α_{\mathcal{L}}=\left\{f: \:f\in L^\infty(\mathbb{R}^{n+1})\:\; {\rm and} \:\; \left\|\partial_y^k e^{-y\sqrt{\mathcal{L}}} f \right\|_{L^\infty(\mathbb{R}^{n+1})}\leq C_k y^{-k+α},\;\: {\rm with }\, k=[α]+1, y>0. \right\}, $$ with the obvious norm. It is shown that these spaces have a pointwise description of Hölder type. The fractional powers $\mathcal{L}^{\pm β}$ are well defined in these spaces and the following regularity propertie…
Under the standard assumptions on the variable exponent $p(x)$ (log- and decay conditions), we give a characterization of the variable exponent Bessel potential space $\mathfrak B^α[L^{p(\cdot)}(\mathbb R^n)]$ in terms of the rate of convergence of the Poisson semigroup $P_t$. We show that the existence of the Riesz fractional derivative $\mathbb{D}^\al f$ in the space $L^{p(\cdot)}(\rn)$ is equivalent to the existence of the limit $\frac{1}{\ve^\al}(I-P_\ve)^\al f$. In the pre-limiting case $\sup_x p(x)<\frac{n}{\al}$ we show that the Bessel potential space is characterized by the condition $…
Let $L$ be the infinitesimal generator of an analytic semigroup on $L^2(R^n)$ with Gaussican kernel bounds, and let $L^{-α/2}$ be the fractional integrals of $L$ for $0<α<n.$ For any locally integrable function $b$, The commutators associated with $L^{-α/2}$ are defined by $[b,L^{-α/2}](f)(x)=b(x)L^{-α/2}(f)(x)-L^{-α/2}(bf)(x)$. When $b\in BMO(ω)$(weighted $BMO$ space) or $b\in BMO$, the author obtain the necessary and sufficient conditions for the boundedness of $[b,L^{-α/2}]$ on weighted Morrey spaces respectively.
We study growth rates for strongly continuous semigroups. We prove that a growth rate for the resolvent on imaginary lines implies a corresponding growth rate for the semigroup if either the underlying space is a Hilbert space, or the semigroup is asymptotically analytic, or if the semigroup is positive and the underlying space is an $L^{p}$-space or a space of continuous functions. We also prove variations of the main results on fractional domains; these are valid on more general Banach spaces. In the second part of the article we apply our main theorem to prove optimality in a classical exam…
We give sharp two-sided estimates of the semigroup generated by the fractional Laplacian plus the Hardy potential on $\mathbb{R}^d$, including the case of the critical constant. We use Davies' method back-to-back with a new method of integral analysis of Duhamel's formula.
We give the regularization for fractional integral by delta sequence and apply it to obtain existence-uniqueness theorems in Colombeau algebras for nonlinear equations with singularities: nonlinear system of integral equations with polar kernel and nonlinear parabolic equations (of ordinary type, with nonlinear conservative term and with Schrödinger kernel) with strongly singular initial data and non-Lipschitz nonlinearities. In a case of nonlinear parabolic equations we do in fact regularization of heat semigroup with delta sequence with respect to the time variable $t.$ We do the same for li…
In this paper we characterize the discrete Hölder spaces by means of the heat and Poisson semigroups associated to the discrete Laplacian. These characterizations allow us to get regularity properties of fractional powers of the discrete Laplacian and the Bessel potentials along these spaces and also in the discrete Zygmund spaces in a more direct way than using the pointwise definition of the spaces. To obtain our results, it has been crucial to get boundedness properties of the heat and Poisson kernels and their derivatives in both space and time variables. We believe that these estimates ar…
This article studies a Fokker-Planck type equation of fractional diffusion with conservative drift $\partial$f/$\partial$t = $Δ$^($α$/2) f + div(Ef), where $Δ$^($α$/2) denotes the fractional Laplacian and E is a confining force field. The main interest of the present paper is that it applies to a wide variety of force fields, with a few local regularity and a polynomial growth at infinity. We first prove the existence and uniqueness of a solution in weighted Lebesgue spaces depending on E under the form of a strongly continuous semigroup. We also prove the existence and uniqueness of a station…
We consider generalized time-fractional evolution equations of the form $$u(t)=u_0+\int_0^tk(t,s)Lu(s)ds$$ with a fairly general memory kernel $k$ and an operator $L$ being the generator of a strongly continuous semigroup. In particular, $L$ may be the generator $L_0$ of a Markov process $ξ$ on some state space $Q$, or $L:=L_0+b\nabla+V$ for a suitable potential $V$ and drift $b$, or $L$ generating subordinate semigroups or Schrödinger type groups. This class of evolution equations includes in particular time- and space- fractional heat and Schrödinger type equations. We show that a subordinat…
We study $L^p$ Besov critical exponents and isoperimetric and Sobolev inequalities associated with fractional Laplacians on metric measure spaces. The main tool is the theory of heat semigroup based Besov classes in Dirichlet spaces that was introduced by the authors in previous works.
