This paper investigates t-reductions of ideals in pullback constructions. Section 2 examines the correlation between the notions of reduction and t-reduction in pseudo-valuation domains. Section 3 solves an open problem on whether the finite t-basic and v-basic ideal properties are distinct. We prove that these two notions coincide in any arbitrary domain. Section 4 features the main result, which establishes the transfer of the finite t-basic ideal property to pullbacks in line with Fontana-Gabelli's result on PvMDs and Gabelli-Houston's result on v-domains. This allows us to enrich the literature with new families of examples, which put the class of domains subject to the finite t-basic ideal property strictly between the two classes of v-domains and integrally closed domains.

Let $R$ be a commutative ring with identity. An ideal $I$ of $R$ is said to be a big ideal (resp. an upper big ideal) if whenever $J\subsetneqq I$ (resp. $I\subsetneqq J$), $J^{n}\subsetneqq I^{n}$ (resp. $I^{n}\subsetneqq J^{n}$) for every $n\geq 1$; and $R$ itself is a big ideal ring provided that every ideal of $R$ is a big ideal. In this paper we study the notions of big ideals, upper big ideals and big ideal rings in different contexts of commutative rings such us integrally closed domains, pullbacks and trivial ring extensions etc. We show that the notions of big and upper big ideals are…
Let $f: A\rightarrow B$ and $g: A\rightarrow C$ be two commutative ring homomorphisms and let $J$ and $J'$ be two ideals of $B$ and $C$, respectively, such that $f^{-1}(J)=g^{-1}(J')$. The \emph{bi-amalgamation} of $A$ with $(B, C)$ along $(J, J')$ with respect to $(f,g)$ is the subring of $B\times C$ given by $$A\bowtie^{f,g}(J,J'):=\big\{(f(a)+j,g(a)+j') \mid a\in A, (j,j')\in J\times J'\big\}.$$ This paper investigates ring-theoretic properties of \emph{bi-amalgamations} and capitalizes on previous works carried on various settings of pullbacks and amalgamations. In the second and third sec…
We introduce a new general construction, denoted by $R\JoinE$, called the amalgamated duplication of a ring $R$ along an $R$--module $E$, that we assume to be an ideal in some overring of $R$. (Note that, when $E^2 =0$, $R\JoinE$ coincides with the Nagata's idealization $R\ltimes E$.) After discussing the main properties of the amalgamated duplication $R\JoinE$ in relation with pullback--type constructions, we restrict our investigation to the study of $R\JoinE$ when $E$ is an ideal of $R$. Special attention is devoted to the ideal-theoretic properties of $R\JoinE$ and to the topological struc…
For the domain $R$ arising from the construction $T, M,D$, we relate the star class groups of $R$ to those of $T$ and $D$. More precisely, let $T$ be an integral domain, $M$ a nonzero maximal ideal of $T$, $D$ a proper subring of $k:=T/M$, $ϕ: T\to k$ the natural projection, and let $R=ϕ^{-1}(D)$. For each star operation $\ast$ on $R$, we define the star operation $\ast_ϕ$ on $D$, i.e., the ``projection'' of $\ast$ under $ϕ$, and the star operation ${(\ast)}_{_{T}}$ on $T$, i.e., the ``extension'' of $\ast$ to $T$. Then we show that, under a mild hypothesis on the group of units of $T$, if $\a…
For a finite-type star operation $\star$ on a domain $R$, we say that $R$ is $\star$-super potent if each maximal $\star$-ideal of $R$ contains a finitely generated ideal $I$ such that (1) $I$ is contained in no other maximal $\star$-ideal of $R$ and (2) $J$ is $\star$-invertible for every finitely generated ideal $J \supseteq I$. Examples of $t$-super potent domains include domains each of whose maximal $t$-ideals is $t$-invertible (e.g., Krull domains). We show that if the domain $R$ is $\star$-super potent for some finite-type star operation $\star$, then $R$ is $t$-super potent, we study $…
The reduction number of monomial ideals in the polynomial $K[x,y]$ is studied. We focus on ideals $I$ for which $J=(x^a,y^b)$ is a reduction ideal. The computation of the reduction number amounts to solve linear inequalities. In some special cases the reduction number can be explicitly computed.
Analogues of Eakin-Sathaye theorem for reductions of ideals are proved for ${\mathbb N}^s$-graded good filtrations. These analogues yield bounds on joint reduction vectors for a family of ideals and reduction numbers for $\mathbb N$-graded filtrations. Several examples related to lex-segment ideals, contracted ideals in $2$-dimensional regular local rings and the filtration of integral and tight closures of powers of ideals in hypersurface rings are constructed to show effectiveness of these bounds.
We characterize when the monomial maximal ideal of a simplicial affine semigroup ring has a monomial minimal reduction. When this is the case, we study the Cohen-Macaulay and Gorenstein properties of the associated graded ring and provide several bounds for the reduction number with respect to the monomial minimal reduction.
The reduction number r(A) of a standard graded algebra A is the least integer k such that there exists a minimal reduction J of the homogeneous maximal ideal m of A such that Jm^k=m^{k+1}. Vasconcelos conjectured that the reduction number of A=R/I can only increase by passing to the initial ideal, i.e r(R/I)\leq r(R/in(I)). The goal of this note is to prove the conjecture.
The homological property of the associated graded ring of an ideal is an important problem in commutative algebra and algebraic geometry. In this paper we explore the almost Cohen-Macaulayness of the associated graded ring of stretched $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideals in the case where the reduction number attains almost minimal value in a Cohen-Macaulay local ring $(A,\mathfrak{m})$. As an application, we present complete descriptions of the associated graded ring of stretched $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideals with small reduction number.
Let R be a commutative ring and I an ideal of R. A sub-ideal J of I is a reduction of I if JI^n = I^n+1 for some positive integer n. The ring R has the (finite) basic ideal property if (finitely generated) ideals of R do not have proper reductions. Hays characterized (one-dimensional) Prufer domains as domains with the finite basic ideal property (basic ideal property). We extend Hays' results to Prufer v-multiplication domains by replacing "basic" with "w-basic," where w is a particular star operation. We also investigate relations among star-basic properties for certain star operations.
In this paper, we give a way to construct graded filtrations of graded modules. We then apply it to the Sally module, which describes a correction term of the Hilbert function. As a result, we obtain the inequality of the Hilbert coefficients for ideals of reduction number $2$ or $3$.
Let A be a commutative ring and I an ideal of A with a reduction Q. In this paper we give an upper bound on the reduction number of I with respect to Q, when a suitable family of ideals in A is given. As a corollary it follows that if some ideal J containing I satisfies J^2 = QJ, then I^{v + 2} = QI^{v + 1}, where v denotes the number of generators of J / I as an A-module.
Let $I$ be a monomial ideal in a polynomial ring $A=K[x_1,...,x_n]$. We call a monomial ideal $J$ to be a minimal monomial reduction ideal of $I$ if there exists no proper monomial ideal $L \subset J$ such that $L$ is a reduction ideal of $I$. We prove that there exists a unique minimal monomial reduction ideal $J$ of $I$ and we show that the maximum degree of a monomial generator of $J$ determines the slope $p$ of the linear function $\reg(I^t)=pt+c$ for $t\gg 0$. We determine the structure of the reduced fiber ring $\mathcal{F}(J)_{\red}$ of $J$ and show that $\mathcal{F}(J)_{\red}$ is isomo…
Let R be an integral domain and I a nonzero ideal of R. A sub-ideal J of I is a t-reduction of I if (JI^{n})_{t}=(I^{n+1})_{t} for some positive integer n. An element x in R is t-integral over I if there is an equation x^{n} + a_{1}x^{n-1} +...+ a_{n-1}x + a_{n} = 0 with a_{i} in (I^{i})_{t} for I = 1,...,n. The set of all elements that are t-integral over I is called the t-integral closure of I. This paper investigates the t-reductions and t-integral closure of ideals. Our objective is to establish satisfactory t-analogues of well-known results, in the literature, on the integral closure of i…
In this paper, we introduce an invariant of Cohen-Macaulay local rings in terms of the reduction number of canonical ideals. The invariant can be defined in arbitrary Cohen-Macaulay rings and it measures how close to being Gorenstein. First, we clarify the relation between almost Gorenstein rings and nearly Gorenstein rings by using the invariant in dimension one. We next characterize the idealization of trace ideals over Gorenstein rings in terms of the invariant. It provides better prospects for a result of the almost Gorenstein property of idealization.
In this paper, we present an algorithm for computing the minimal reductions of $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideals of Cohen--Macaulay local rings. Using this algorithm, we are able to compute the Hilbert--Samuel multiplicities and solve the membership problem for the integral closure of $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideals.
We study minimal reductions of edge ideals of graphs and determine restrictions on the coefficients of the generators of these minimal reductions. We prove that when $I$ is not basic, then $\core{I}\subset \m I$, where $I$ is an edge ideal in the corresponding localized polynomial ring and $\m$ is the maximal ideal of this ring. We show that the inclusion is an equality for the edge ideal of an even cycle with an arbitrary number of whiskers. Moreover, we show that the core is obtained as a finite intersection of homogeneous minimal reductions in the case of even cycles. The formula for the co…
Let $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ be a local Noetherian ring with residue field $k$. While much is known about the generating sets of reductions of ideals of $R$ if $k$ is infinite, the case in which $k$ is finite is less well understood. We investigate the existence (or lack thereof) of proper reductions of an ideal of $R$ and the number of generators needed for a reduction in the case $k$ is a finite field. When $R$ is one-dimensional, we give a formula for the smallest integer $n$ for which every ideal has an $n$-generated reduction. It follows that in a one-dimensional local Noetherian ring every ide…
Let $(R,m)$ be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring of positive dimension $d$ and infinite residue field. Let $I$ be an m-primary ideal and $J$ a minimal reduction of $I$. In this paper, we show that $\widetilde{r_J(I)}\leq r_J(I)$. This answer to a question that made by M.E. Rossi and I. Swanson in [\ref{Rs}, Question 4.6].
We find conditions on the local cohomology modules of multi-Rees algebras of admissible filtrations which enable us to predict joint reduction numbers. As a consequence we are able to prove a generalisation of a result of Reid-Roberts-Vitulli in the setting of analytically unramified local rings for completeness of power products of complete ideals.
We discuss the problem of determining reduction number of a polynomial ideal I in n variables. We present two algorithms based on parametric computations. The first one determines the absolute reduction number of I and requires computation in a polynomial ring with (n-dim(I))dim(I) parameters and n-dim(I) variables. The second one computes via a Grobner system the set of all reduction numbers of the ideal I and thus in particular also its big reduction number. However,it requires computations in a ring with n.dim(I) parameters and n variables.
Let $R$ be a Noetherian local ring and let $I$ be an ideal in $R$. The ideal $I$ is called balanced if the colon ideal $J:I$ is independent of the choice of the minimal reduction $J$ of $I$. Under suitable assumptions, Ulrich showed that $I$ is balanced if and only if the reduction number, $r(I)$, of $I$ is at most the `expected' one, namely $\ell(I)- \height I+1$, where $\ell(I)$ is the analytic spread of $I$. In this article we propose a generalization of balanced. We prove under suitable assumptions that if either $R$ is one-dimensional or the associated graded ring of $I$ is Cohen-Macaulay…
We study relationship between postulation and reduction vectors of admissible multigraded filtrations $\mathcal F= \{\mathcal F (\underline n)\}_{\underline n\in\mathbb Z^s}$ of ideals in Cohen-Macaulay local rings of dimension at most two. This is enabled by a suitable generalisation of the Kirby-Mehran Complex. An analysis of its homology leads to an analogue of Huneke's Fundamental Lemma which plays a crucial role in our investigations. We also clarify the relationship between the Cohen-Macaulay property of the multigraded Rees algebra of $\mathcal F$ and reduction vectors with respect to c…
We study the relationship between the reduction number of a primary ideal of a local ring relative to one of its minimal reductions and the multiplicity of the corresponding Sally module. This paper is focused on three goals: (i) To develop a change of rings technique for the Sally module of an ideal to allow extension of results from Cohen-Macaulay rings to more general rings. (ii) To use the fiber of the Sally modules of almost complete intersection ideals to connect its structure to the Cohen-Macaulayness of the special fiber ring. (iii) To extend some of the results of (i) to two-dimension…
Let $R$ be a standard graded algebra over an infinite field $\mathbb{K}$ and $M$ a finitely generated $\ZZ$-graded $R$-module. Let $I_1,\ldots I_m$ be graded ideals of $R$. The functions $r(M/I_1^{a_1}\ldots I_m^{a_m}M)$ and $r(I_1^{a_1}\ldots I_m^{a_m}M)$ are investigated and their asymptotical behaviours are given. Here $r(\bullet)$ stands for the reduction number of a finitely graded module $\bullet$.
In this paper, we obtain a generalization, in dimension $3$, of a theorem of David Rees about joint reductions of the bigraded filtration $\{ \overline{I^rJ^s}\}$ of complete ${\mathfrak m}$-primary ideals and vanishing of the second normal Hilbert coefficient $\overline{e}_2(IJ)$ where $R$ is a two-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay analytically unramified local ring with maximal ideal $\mathfrak m.$ This generalization is obtained as a consequence of a formula for the third local cohomology module of the extended Rees algebras of the $\mathbb Z^3$-graded filtration $\{\overline{I^rJ^sK^t}\}$ with su…
In a local Cohen-Macaulay ring $(A, \mathrm{m})$, we study the Hilbert function of an $\mathrm{m}$-primary ideal $I$ whose reduction number is two. It is a continuous work of the papers of Huneke, Ooishi, Sally, and Goto-Nishida-Ozeki. With some conditions, we show the inequality $\mathrm{e}_1(I)\ge \mathrm{e}_0(I) - \ell_A (A/I) + \mathrm{e}_2(I)$ of the Hilbert coefficients, which is the converse inequality of Sally and Itoh. We also study relations between the Hilbert coefficients and the depth of the associated graded ring.
Green's general hyperplane restriction theorem gives a sharp upper bound for the Hilbert function of a standard graded algebra over and infinite field K modulo a general linear form. We strengthen Green's result by showing that the linear forms that do not satisfy such estimate belong to a finite union of proper linear spaces. As an application we give a method to derive variations of the Eakin-Sathaye theorem on reductions. In particular, we recover and extend results by O'Carroll on the Eakin-Sathaye theorem for complete and joint reductions.
In a Cohen-Macaulay local ring $(A, \mathfrak{m})$, we study the Hilbert function of an integrally closed $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideal $I$ whose reduction number is three. With a mild assumption we give an inequality $\ell_A(A/I) \ge \mathrm{e}_0(I) - \mathrm{e}_1(I) + \dfrac{\mathrm{e}_2(I) + \ell_A(I^2/QI)}{2}$, where $\mathrm{e}_i(I)$ denotes the $i$th Hilbert coefficients and $Q$ denotes a minimal reduction of $I$. The inequality is located between inequalities of Itoh and Elias-Valla. Furthermore our inequality becomes an equality if and only if the depth of the associated graded ring of …
Let $R$ be a $d$-dimensional standard graded ring over an Artin local ring. Let $M$ be the unique maximal homogeneous ideal of $R.$ Let $h^i(R)_n$ denote the length of $H^i_M(R)_n$, i.e. the nth graded component of the ith local cohomology module of R with respect to M. Define the Eisenbud-Goto invariant of $R$ to be the number $$EG(R)= \sum_{q=0}^{d-1} \binom{d-1}{q} h^q(R)_{1-q}.$$ We prove that the $a$-invariant of $R$ satisfies $$ a(R) \leq e(R)-length(R_1)+(d-1)(length(R_0)-1)+ EG(R).$$ Using this bound we get upper bounds for the reduction number of an $m$-primary ideal of a Cohen-Macaul…
Let $m$, $n$, $a_1$, ..., $a_r$, $b_1$, ..., $b_r$ be integers with $1\leq a_1<...<a_r\leq m$ and $1\leq b_1<...<b_r\leq n$. And let $x$ be the universal $m\times n$ matrix with the property that $i$-minors of first $a_i-1$ rows and first $b_i-1$ columns are all zero, for $i=1$, ..., $r+1$ ($a_{r+1}=m+1$ and $b_{r+1}=n+1$). For an integer $u$ with $1\leq u\leq m$, we denote by $U$ the $u\times n$ matrix consisting of the first $u$ rows of $x$. In this paper, we consider the analytic spread and the reduction number of the ideal of maximal minors of $U$
We study a notion called $n$-standardness (defined by M. E. Rossi and extended in this paper) of ideals primary to the maximal ideal in a Cohen-Macaulay local ring and some of its consequences. We further study conditions under which the maximal ideal is three-standard, first proving results when the residue field has prime characteristic and then using the method of reduction to prime characteristic to extend the results to the equicharacteristic zero case. As an application, we extend a result due to T. Puthenpurakal and show that a certain length associated to a minimal reduction of the max…
Let $J\subset I$ be ideals in a formally equidimensional local ring with $λ(I/J)<\infty.$ Rees proved that for all $n\gg0$, $λ(I^n/J^n)$ is a polynomial $P(I/J)(X)$ in $n$ of degree at most dim $R$ and $J$ is a reduction of $I$ if and only if deg $P(I/J)(X)\leq$ dim $R-1.$ We extend this result for all Noetherian filtrations of ideals in a formally equidimensional local ring and for (not necessarily Noetherian) filtrations of ideals in analytically irreducible rings. We provide certain classes of ideals such that deg $P(I/J)$ achieves its maximal degree. On the other hand, for ideals $J\subset…
The reductions of an ideal $I$ give a natural pathway to the properties of $I$, with the advantage of having fewer generators. In this paper we primarily focus on a conjecture about the reduction exponent of links of a broad class of primary ideals. The existence of an algebra structure on the Koszul and Eagon-Northcott resolutions is the main tool for detailing the known cases of the conjecture. In the last section we relate the conjecture to a formula involving the length of the first Koszul homology modules of these ideals.
The core of an $R$-ideal $I$ is the intersection of all reductions of $I$. This object was introduced by D. Rees and J. Sally and later studied by C. Huneke and I. Swanson, who showed in particular its connection to J. Lipman's notion of adjoint of an ideal. Being an a priori infinite intersection of ideals, the core is difficult to describe explicitly. We prove in a broad setting that: ${\rm core}(I)$ is a finite intersection of minimal reductions; ${\rm core}(I)$ is a finite intersection of general minimal reductions; ${\rm core}(I)$ is the contraction to $R$ of a `universal' ideal; ${\rm co…
Let $R$ be a commutative ring with identity. In this note, we study the property: If $ I \subsetneqq J$ are ideals in $R$, then $ I^n \subsetneqq J^n$ for all $ n\geq 1$. We define the notion of a big ideal (Definition 1.2). It is noted that the property has close relationship with the notions of reduction of an ideal and Ratliff-Rush ideal [7]. Apart from other results, it is proved that a Noetherian domain satifies the property if and only if every ideal in $R$ is a Ratliff-Rush ideal. We also prove that ideals having no proper reduction are big ideals, and maximal ideals in regular rings ar…
Let $(A, \frak m)$ be a noetherian local ring with maximal ideal $\frak{m}$ and infinite residue field $k = A/\frak{m}.$ Let $J$ be an $\frak m$-primary ideal, $I_1,...,I_s$ ideals of $A$, and $M$ a finitely generated $A$-module. In this paper, we interpret mixed multiplicities of $(I_1,..., I_s,J)$ with respect to $M$ as multiplicities of joint reductions of them. This generalizes the Rees's theorem on mixed multiplicity (Theorem 2.4). As an application we show that mixed multiplicities are also multiplicities of Rees's superficial sequences.
The core of an ideal is defined as the intersection of all of its reductions. In this paper we provide an explicit description for the core of a monomial ideal $I$ satisfying certain residual conditions, showing that ${\rm core}(I)$ coincides with the largest monomial ideal contained in a general reduction of $I$. We prove that the class of lex-segment ideals satisfies these residual conditions and study the core of lex-segment ideals generated in one degree. For monomial ideals that do not necessarily satisfy the residual conditions and that are generated in one degree, we conjecture an expli…
In this article, we define a class of binomial ideals associated to a simplicial complex. This class of ideals appears in the presentation of fiber cones of codimension 2 lattice ideals \cite{hm}, and in the work of Barile and Morales \cite{bm2}, \cite{bm3}, \cite{bm4}. We compute the reduction number of Binomial extensions of Simplicial ideals. This extends all the previous results in this area.
The aim of this paper is to study the relationship between reduction numbers and Borel-fixed ideals in all characteristics. By definition, Borel-fixed ideals are closed under certain specializations which is similar to the strong stability. We will estimate the number of monomials which can be specialized to a given monomial. As a consequence, we obtain a combinatorial version of the well-known Eakin-Sathaye's theorem which bounds the reduction number in terms of the Hilbert function. Furthermore, we show that the bound of Eakin-Sathaye's theorem is attained by the reduction number of a lex-se…
We prove new results on the connections between reduction numbers and the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of blowup algebras and blowup modules, the key basic tool being the operation of Ratliff-Rush closure. First, we answer in two particular cases a question of M. E. Rossi, D. T. Trung, and N. V. Trung about Rees algebras of ideals in two-dimensional Buchsbaum local rings, and we even ask whether one of such situations always holds. In another theorem we generalize a result of A. Mafi on ideals in two-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay local rings, by extending it to arbitrary dimension (and allowing…
It is well known that in the Noetherian local ring with infinite residue field the reduction of $\mm$-primary ideal may be given in the form of a sufficiently general linear combination of its generators. In the paper we give a condition for the existence of such reduction in terms of the sum of degrees of the ideal fiber cone prime divisors in the case of any Noetherian local ring.
In this paper we use some results related to regularity, Betti numbers and reduction of generic initial ideals, showing their stability in passing from an ideal to its initial ideal if the last has some simple properties.
Using vanishing of graded components of local cohomology modules of the Rees algebra of the normal filtration of an ideal, we give bounds on the normal reduction number. This helps to get necessary and sufficient conditions in Cohen-Macaulay local rings of dimension $d\geq 3$, for the vanishing of the normal Hilbert coefficients $\overline{e}_k(I)$ for $k\leq d,$ in terms of the normal reduction number.
We establish new classes of Ratliff-Rush closed ideals and some pathological behavior of the Ratliff-Rush closure. In particular, Ratliff-Rush closure does not behave well under passage modulo superficial elements, taking powers of ideals, associated primes, leading term ideals, and the minimal number of generators. In contrast, the reduction number of the Ratliff-Rush filtration behaves better: it preserves some information on the reduction number of the ideal.
The question we address in this paper is: which monomial ideals have minimal cellular resolutions, that is, minimal resolutions obtained from homogenizing the chain maps of CW-complexes? Velasco gave families of examples of monomial ideals that do not have minimal cellular resolutions, but those examples have large minimal generating sets. In this paper, we show that if a monomial ideal has at most four generators, then the ideal and its (monomial) Artinian reductions have minimal cellular resolutions. When the ideal is generated by two monomials, we can give a precise description of the CW-co…
D. Rees and J. Sally defined the core of an $R$-ideal $I$ as the intersection of all $($minimal$)$ reductions of $I$. However, it is not easy to give an explicit characterization of it in terms of data attached to the ideal. Until recently, the only case in which a closed formula was known is the one of integrally closed ideals in a two-dimensional regular local ring, due to C. Huneke and I. Swanson. The main result of this paper explicitly describes the core of a broad class of ideals with good residual properties in an arbitrary local Cohen-Macaulay ring. We also find sharp bounds on the num…
We prove that certain modules are faithful. This enables us to draw consequences about the reduction number and the integral closure of some classes of ideals.
We show that given a finitely generated standard-graded algebra of dimension $d$ over an infinite field, its graded Noether normalizations obey a certain kind of `generic exchange', allowing one to pass between any two of them in at most $d$ steps. We prove analogous generic exchange theorems for minimal reductions of an ideal, minimal complete reductions of a set of ideals, and minimal complete reductions of multigraded $k$-algebras. Finally, we unify all these results into a common axiomatic framework by introducing a new topological-combinatorial structure we call a generic matroid, which i…
In \cite{rees} Rees gave a characterization for the normal joint reduction number zero of two $\m$-primary ideals in an analytically unramified Cohen-Macaulay local ring of dimension two. Rees' result is a generalization of Zariski's product theorem for complete ideals in a regular local ring of dimension two. The aim of this paper is to extend Rees' theorem for the ordinary powers of $\m$-primary ideals $I$ and $J$ in a Cohen-Macaulay local ring of dimension two. Following Rees' approach, we define the modified Koszul homology modules $M^1_{r,s}(a^k,b^k)$ for a joint reduction $(a,b)$ of $I$ …
The notion of a root functional of polynomials is a generalization of the notion of a root for a multiple root. A root functional is a linear functional that is defined on a polynomial ring and annuls the ideal of a system of polynomials. A bounded root functional is a functional that annuls d-th component of the ideal in some filtration in this ideal. It was constructed the operation of continuation of root functionals and the operation of reduction of polynomials modulo the ideal on the basis of the extension operation for bounded root functionals when the number of polynomials is equal to t…
The core of an ideal is the intersection of all its reductions. For large classes of ideals I we explicitly describe the core as a colon ideal of a power of a single reduction and a power of I.
