Let $I$ be a monomial ideal in a polynomial ring $A=K[x_1,...,x_n]$. We call a monomial ideal $J$ to be a minimal monomial reduction ideal of $I$ if there exists no proper monomial ideal $L \subset J$ such that $L$ is a reduction ideal of $I$. We prove that there exists a unique minimal monomial reduction ideal $J$ of $I$ and we show that the maximum degree of a monomial generator of $J$ determines the slope $p$ of the linear function $\reg(I^t)=pt+c$ for $t\gg 0$. We determine the structure of the reduced fiber ring $\mathcal{F}(J)_{\red}$ of $J$ and show that $\mathcal{F}(J)_{\red}$ is isomorphic to the inverse limit of an inverse system of semigroup rings determined by convex geometric properties of $J$.
Let $K$ be a field and $S = K[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ be a polynomial ring over $K$. We discuss the behaviour of the extremal Betti numbers of the class of squarefree strongly stable ideals. More precisely, we give a numerical characterization of the possible extremal Betti numbers (values as well as positions) of such a class of squarefree monomial ideals.
Let K be a field and S a polynomial ring in a finite number of variables over K. Let F be a finitely generated graded free S-module. We examine some classes of squarefree monomial submodules of F. Hence, we focalize our attention on the Betti table of such classes in order to analyze the behavior of their extremal Betti numbers.
We determine in an explicit way the depth of the fiber cone and its relation ideal for classes of monomial ideals in two variables. These classes include concave and convex ideals as well as symmetric ideals.
In this short note we introduce a notion of extremality for Betti numbers of a minimal free resolution, which can be seen as a refinement of the notion of Mumford-Castelnuovo regularity. We show that extremal Betti numbers of an arbitrary submodule of a free S-module are preserved when taking the generic initial module. We relate extremal multigraded Betti numbers in the minimal resolution of a square free monomial ideal with those of the monomial ideal corresponding to the Alexander dual simplicial complex and generalize theorems of Eagon-Reiner and Terai. As an application we give easy (alte…
We consider the fiber cone of monomial ideals. It is shown that for monomial ideals $I\subset K[x,y]$ of height $2$, generated by $3$ elements, the fiber cone $F(I)$ of $I$ is a hypersurface ring, and that $F(I)$ has positive depth for interesting classes of height $2$ monomial ideals $I\subset K[x,y]$, which are generated by $4$ elements. For these classes of ideals we also show that $F(I)$ is Cohen--Macaulay if and only if the defining ideal $J$ of $F(I)$ is generated by at most 3 elements. In all the cases a minimal set of generators of $J$ is determined.
Given a monomial ideal in a polynomial ring over a field, we define the LCM-dual of the given ideal. We show good properties of LCM-duals. Including the isomorphism between the special fiber of LCM-dual and the special fiber of given monomial ideal. We show the special fibers of LCM-duals of strongly stable ideals are normal Cohen-Macaulay Koszul domains. We provide an explicit describing of minimal free resolutions of LCM-duals of strongly stable ideals.
Given a monomial ideal in a polynomial ring over a field, we define the generalized Newton complementary dual of the given ideal. We show good properties of such duals including linear quotients and isomorphisms between the special fiber rings. We construct the cellular free resolutions of duals of strongly stable ideals generated in the same degree. When the base ideal is generated in degree two, we provide an explicit description of cellular free resolution of the dual of a compatible generalized stable ideal.
We give conditions for determining the extremal behavior for the (graded) Betti numbers of squarefree monomial ideals. For the case of non-unique minima, we give several conditions which we use to produce infinite families, exponentially growing with dimension, of Hilbert functions which have no smallest (graded) Betti numbers among squarefree monomial ideals and all ideals. For the case of unique minima, we give two families of Hilbert functions, one with exponential and one with linear growth as dimension grows, that have unique minimal Betti numbers among squarefree monomial ideals.
This paper examines the dimension of the graded local cohomology $H_\mathfrak{m}^p(S/K^s)_γ$ and $H_\mathfrak{m}^p(S/K^{(s)})$ for a monomial ideal $K$. This information is encoded in the reduced homology of a simplicial complex called the degree complex. We explicitly compute the degree complexes of ordinary and symbolic powers of sums and fiber products of ideals, as well as the degree complex of the mixed product, in terms of the degree complexes of their components. We then use homological techniques to discuss the cohomology of their quotient rings. In particular, this technique allows fo…
For any ideal $I$ in a Noetherian local ring or any graded ideal $I$ in a standard graded $K$-algebra over a field $K$, we introduce the socle module $\mathrm{Soc}(I)$, whose graded components give us the socle of the powers of $I$. It is observed that $\mathrm{Soc}(I)$ is a finitely generated module over the fiber cone of $I$. In the case that $S$ is the polynomial ring and all powers of $I\subseteq S$ have linear resolution, we define the module $\mathrm{Soc}^*(I)$ which is a module over the Rees ring of $I$. For the edge ideal of a graph and for classes of polymatroidal ideals we study the …
Given any equigenerated monomial ideal $I$ with the property that the defining ideal $J$ of the fiber cone $ F(I)$ of $I$ is generated by quadratic binomials, we introduce a matrix such that the set of its binomial $2$-minors is a generating set of $J$. In this way, we characterize the fiber cone of sortable and Freiman ideals.

In this paper we study the extent to which Golodness may be transferred along morphisms of DG-algebras. In particular, we show that if $I$ is a so-called fiber invariant ideal, then Golodness of $I$ is equivalent to Golodness of the initial ideal of $I$. We use this to transfer Golodness results for monomial ideals to more general classes of ideals. We also prove that any so-called rainbow monomial ideal with linear resolution defines a Golod ring; this result encompasses and generalizes many known Golodness results for classes of monomial ideals. We then combine the techniques developed to gi…
Cohen Macaulay property of fiber cones of ideals is characterized in terms of its Hilbert series. Hilbert series of fiber cones of ideals with minimal mixed multiplicity is calculated. It is proved that the fiber cone of an m-primary ideal I with minimal mixed multiplicity is Cohen-Macaulay if and only if its reduction number is atmost one. Hilbert series of fiber cones of ideals generated by quadratic sequences in standard graded rings is computed by deforming it to a face ring of a simplicial complex. Applications are given to defining ideals of monomial projective space curves lying on the …

We present a class of homogeneous ideals which are generated by monomials and binomials of degree two and are set-theoretic complete intersections. This class includes certain reducible varieties of minimal degree and, in particular, the presentation ideals of the fiber cone algebras of monomial varieties of codimension two.
Let $R=\Bbbk[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ be a polynomial ring over a field $\Bbbk$ and let $I\subset R$ be a monomial ideal preserved by the natural action of the symmetric group $\mathfrak S_n$ on $R$. We give a combinatorial method to determine the $\mathfrak S_n$-module structure of $\mathrm{Tor}_i(I,\Bbbk)$. Our formula shows that $\mathrm{Tor}_i(I,\Bbbk)$ is built from induced representations of tensor products of Specht modules associated to hook partitions, and their multiplicities are determined by topological Betti numbers of certain simplicial complexes. This result can be viewed as an $\mathfra…
The toric fiber product is a general procedure for gluing two ideals, homogeneous with respect to the same multigrading, to produce a new homogeneous ideal. Toric fiber products generalize familiar constructions in commutative algebra like adding monomial ideals and the Segre product. We describe how to obtain generating sets of toric fiber products in non-zero codimension and discuss persistence of normality and primary decompositions under toric fiber products. Several applications are discussed, including (a) the construction of Markov bases of hierarchical models in many new cases, (b) a n…
A tame ideal is an ideal $I$ such that the blowup of the affine space $\mathbb{A}_k^n$ along $I$ is regular. In this paper, we give a combinatorial characterization of tame squarefree monomial ideals. More precisely, we show that a square free monomial ideal is tame if and only if the corresponding clutter is a union of some isolated vertices and a complete $d$-partite $d$-uniform clutter. It turns out that a squarefree monomial ideal is tame, if and only if the facets of its Stanley-Reisner complex have mutually disjoint complements. Also, we characterize all monomial ideals generated in degr…

We investigate the Rees algebra and the toric ring of the squarefree monomial ideal associated to the three-dimensional Ferrers diagram. Under the projection property condition, we describe explicitly the presentation ideals of the Rees algebra and the toric ring. We show that the toric ring is a Koszul Cohen--Macaulay normal domain, while the Rees algebra is Koszul and the defining ideal is of fiber type.
We study ideals which are generated by monomials of degree $d$ in the polynomial ring in $n$ variables and which satisfy certain numerical side conditions regarding their exponents. Typical examples of such ideals are the ideals of Veronese type, squarefree Veronese ideals or $t$-spread Veronese ideals. In this paper we focus on $c$-bounded $t$-spread Veronese ideals and on Veronese ideals of bounded support. Their powers as well as their fiber cone is also be considered.
Let $R$ and $S$ be polynomial rings of positive dimensions over a field $k$. Let $I\subseteq R, J\subseteq S$ be non-zero homogeneous ideals none of which contains a linear form. Denote by $F$ the fiber product of $I$ and $J$ in $T=R\otimes_k S$. We compute homological invariants of the powers of $F$ using the data of $I$ and $J$. Under the assumption that either $\text{char}~ k=0$ or $I$ and $J$ are monomial ideals, we provide explicit formulas for the depth and regularity of powers of $F$. In particular, we establish for all $s\ge 2$ the intriguing formula $\text{depth}(T/F^s)=0$. If moreove…
Given a homogeneous ideal I of a polynomial ring A=K[X_1,...,X_n] and a monomial order, we construct a new monomial ideal of A associated with I. We call it the zero-generic initial ideal of I with respect to the order and denote it with gin_0(I), or with Gin_0(I) whenever the order is the reverse-lexicographic order. When the characteristic of K is zero, a zero-generic initial ideal is the usual generic initial ideal. We show that Gin_0(I) is endowed with many interesting properties, some of which are easily seen, e.g., it is a strongly stable monomial ideal in any characteristic, and has the…
We study, by means of embeddings of Hilbert functions, a class of rings which we call Shakin rings, i.e. quotients K[X_1,...,X_n]/a of a polynomial ring over a field K by ideals a=L+P which are the sum of a piecewise lex-segment ideal L, as defined by Shakin, and a pure powers ideal P. Our main results extend Abedelfatah's recent work on the Eisenbud-Green-Harris conjecture, Shakin's generalization of Macaulay and Bigatti-Hulett-Pardue theorems on Betti numbers and, when char(K)=0, Mermin-Murai theorem on the Lex-Plus-Power inequality, from monomial regular sequences to a larger class of ideal…
Let $M$ and $N$ be two monomials of the same degree, and let $I$ be the smallest Borel ideal containing $M$ and $N$. We show that the toric ring of $I$ is Koszul by constructing a quadratic Gröbner basis for the associated toric ideal. Our proofs use the construction of graphs corresponding to fibers of the toric map. As a consequence, we conclude that the Rees algebra is also Koszul.
We investigate Rees algebras and special fiber rings obtained by blowing up specialized Ferrers ideals. This class of monomial ideals includes strongly stable monomial ideals generated in degree two and edge ideals of prominent classes of graphs. We identify the equations of these blow-up algebras. They generate determinantal ideals associated to subregions of a generic symmetric matrix, which may have holes. Exhibiting Gröbner bases for these ideals and using methods from Gorenstein liaison theory, we show that these determinantal rings are normal Cohen-Macaulay domains that are Koszul, that …
The deviations of a graded algebra are a sequence of integers that determine the Poincare series of its residue field and arise as the number of generators of certain DG algebras. In a sense, deviations measure how far a ring is from being a complete intersection. In this paper we study extremal deviations among those of algebras with a fixed Hilbert series. In this setting, we prove that, like the Betti numbers, deviations do not decrease when passing to an initial ideal and are maximized by the Lex-segment ideal. We also prove that deviations grow exponentially for Golod rings and for certai…
