We study ideals which are generated by monomials of degree $d$ in the polynomial ring in $n$ variables and which satisfy certain numerical side conditions regarding their exponents. Typical examples of such ideals are the ideals of Veronese type, squarefree Veronese ideals or $t$-spread Veronese ideals. In this paper we focus on $c$-bounded $t$-spread Veronese ideals and on Veronese ideals of bounded support. Their powers as well as their fiber cone is also be considered.
Given a standard graded polynomial ring over a commutative Noetherian ring $A$, we prove that the cohomological dimension and the height of the ideals defining any of its Veronese subrings are equal. This result is due to Ogus when $A$ is a field of characteristic zero, and follows from a result of Peskine and Szpiro when $A$ is a field of positive characteristic; our result applies, for example, when $A$ is the ring of integers.
This paper was motivated by a problem left by Herzog and Hibi, namely to classify all unmixed polymatroidal ideals. In the particular case of polymatroidal ideals corresponding to discrete polymatroids of Veronese type, i.e ideals of Veronese type, we give a complete description of the associated prime ideals and then, we show that such an ideal is unmixed if and only if it is Cohen-Macaulay. We also give for this type of ideals equivalent characterizations for being equidimensional.
In this paper, we obtain explicit formulas for the Hilbert series and Hilbert depth of squarefree Veronese ideals in a standard graded polynomial ring.
We prove that the defining ideal of a sufficiently high Veronese subring of a toric algebra admits a quadratic Gröbner basis consisting of binomials. More generally, we prove that the defining ideal of a sufficiently high Veronese subring of a standard graded ring admits a quadratic Gröbner basis. We give a lower bound on $d$ such that the defining ideal of $d$-th Veronese subring admits a quadratic Gröbner basis. Eisenbud--Reeves--Totaro stated the same theorem without a proof with some lower bound on $d$. In many cases, our lower bound is less than Eisenbud--Reeves--Totaro's lower bound.
We show that high Veronese subrings of any commutative graded ring have a Grobner basis with all relations of degree 2. (The d-th Veronese subring of a ring A_0 + A_1 + A_2 + ... is the ring A_0 + A_d + A_{2d} + ...; ``high'' means we take d sufficiently large, say at least half the regularity of the ideal defining the original ring.) This gives another proof of Backelin's theorem that such Veronese subrings are Koszul algebras (= wonderful rings), i.e., that the minimal resolution of the residue field of such a ring is linear.
We prove a duality theorem for simplicial complexes arising from a combinatorial construction we define, which applies to the squarefree monomial complexes for Veronese ideals of projective spaces and weighted projective spaces. Our theorem yields a formula for the multigraded Betti numbers of these Veronese ideals in terms of the reduced homology groups of these complexes which is dual to one given by Bruns and Herzog. We apply this formula in several ways, including by giving an algorithm for finding the highest syzygy of such a Veronese ideal.
All Cohen--Macaulay polymatroidal ideals are classified. The Cohen--Macaulay polymatroidal ideals are precisely the principal ideals, the Veronese ideals, and the squarefree Veronese ideals.
In this paper, we study toric ideals generated by circuits. For toric ideals which have squarefree quadratic initial ideals, a sufficient condition to be generated by circuits is given. In particular, squarefree Veronese subrings, the second Veronese subrings and configurations arising from root systems satisfy the condition. In addition, we study toric ideals of finite graphs and characterize the graphs whose toric ideals are generated by circuits u -v such that either u or v is squarefree. There exists several classes of graphs whose toric ideals satisfy this condition and whose toric rings …
The second Veronese ideal $I_n$ contains a natural complete intersection $J_n$ generated by the principal $2$-minors of a symmetric $(n\times n)$-matrix. We determine subintersections of the primary decomposition of $J_n$ where one intersectand is omitted. If $I_n$ is omitted, the result is the other end of a complete intersection link as in liaison theory. These subintersections also yield interesting insights into binomial ideals and multigraded algebra. For example, if $n$ is even, $I_n$ is a Gorenstein ideal and the intersection of the remaining primary components of $J_n$ equals $J_n+\lan…
Let $K$ be a field and $S=K[x_1,...,x_n]$. In 1982, Stanley defined what is now called the Stanley depth of an $S$-module $M$, denoted $\sdepth(M)$, and conjectured that $\depth(M) \le \sdepth(M)$ for all finitely generated $S$-modules $M$. This conjecture remains open for most cases. However, Herzog, Vladoiu and Zheng recently proposed a method of attack in the case when $M = I / J$ with $J \subset I$ being monomial $S$-ideals. Specifically, their method associates $M$ with a partially ordered set. In this paper we take advantage of this association by using combinatorial tools to analyze squ…
The ideal of a Segre variety is generated by the 2-minors of a generic hypermatrix of indeterminates. We extend this result to the case of Segre-Veronese varieties. The main tool is the concept of weak generic hypermatrix which allows us to treat also the case of projection of Veronese surfaces from a set of generic points and of Veronese varieties from a Cohen-Macaulay subvariety of codimension 2.
In this paper, we partially confirm a conjecture, proposed by Cimpoeaş, Keller, Shen, Streib and Young, on the Stanley depth of squarefree Veronese ideals $I_{n,d}$. This conjecture suggests that, for positive integers $1 \le d \le n$, $\sdepth (I_{n,d})= \lfloor \binom{n}{d+1}/\binom{n}{d} \rfloor+d$. Herzog, Vladoiu and Zheng established a connection between the Stanley depths of quotients of monomial ideals and interval partitions of certain associated posets. Based on this connection, Keller, Shen, Streib and Young recently developed a useful combinatorial tool to analyze the interval part…
Let $C$ be a smooth (irreducible) curve of degree $d$ in $\mathbb{P}^{2}$. Let $\mathbb{P}^{2} \hookrightarrow \mathbb{P}^{5}$ be the Veronese embedding and let $\mathcal{I}_{C}$ denote the homogeneous ideal of $C$ on $\mathbb{P}^{5}$. In this note we explicitly write down the minimal free resolution of $\mathcal{I}_{C}$ for $d\geq 2
The goal of this paper is to explicitly describe a minimal binomial generating set of a class of lattice ideals, namely the ideal of certain Veronese $3$-fold projections. More precisely, for any integer $d\ge 4$ and any $d$-th root $e$ of 1 we denote by $X_d$ the toric variety defined as the image of the morphism $φ_{T_d}:\mathbb{P}^3 \longrightarrow \mathbb{P}^{μ(T_d)-1}$ where $T_d$ are all monomials of degree $d$ in $k[x,y,z,t]$ invariant under the action of the diagonal matrix $M(1,e,e^2,e^3).$ In this work, we describe a $\mathbb{Z}$-basis of the lattice $L_{η}$ associated to $I(X_d)$ as…
This is a survey article on Gorenstein initial complexes of extensively studied ideals in commutative algebra and algebraic geometry. These include defining ideals of Segre and Veronese varieties, toric deformations of flag varieties known as Hibi ideals, determinantal ideals of generic matrices of indeterminates, and ideals generated by Pfaffians of generic skew symmetric matrices. We give a summary of recent work on the construction of squarefree Gorenstein initial ideals of these ideals when the ideals are themselves Gorenstein. We also present our own independent results for the Segre, Ver…
In this paper we study the Freiman inequality for the minimal number of generators of the square of an equigenerated monomial ideal. Such an ideal is called a Freiman ideal if equality holds in the Freiman inequality. We classify all Freiman ideals of maximal height, the Freiman ideals of certain classes of principal Borel ideals, the Hibi ideals which are Freiman, and classes of Veronese type ideals which are Freiman.
Generalizing techniques that prove that Veronese subrings are Koszul, we show that Rees and multi-Rees algebras of certain types of principal strongly stable ideals are Koszul. We provide explicit Gröbner basis for the defining ideals of these multi-Rees algebras with squarefree initial monomials, to show that they are also normal Cohen-Macaulay domains.
Let $K$ be a field, $R$ be a standard graded $K$-algebra and $M$ be a finitely generated graded $R$-module. The rate of $M$, $\rate_R(M)$, is a measure of the growth of the shifts in the minimal graded free resolution of $M$. In this paper, we study the rate of Veronese modules of $M$. More precisely, it is shown that $\rate_{R^{(c)}}(M)\leq \lceil \max\{\rate_{R}(M),\rat(R)\}/c\rceil+\max\{0,\lceil t^{R}_{0}(M)/c\rceil\},$ for all $c\geq 1$. This extends a result of Herzog et al. As a consequence of this, if $M$ is generated in degree zero, then $\reg_{R^{(c)}}(M)=0$, for all $c\geq \max\{\ra…
Let $R = k[x_1,\ldots, x_n]$ be the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over a field $k$ and let $I$ be a monomial ideal of $R$. In this paper, we study almost Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complex. Moreover, we characterize the almost Cohen-Macaulay polymatroidal Veronese type and transversal polymatroidal ideals and furthermore we give some examples.
We study ideals of Borel type, including $k$-Borel ideals and $t$-spread Veronese ideals. We determine their free resolutions and their homological shift ideals. The multiplicity and the analytic spread of equigenerated squarefree principal Borel ideals are computed. For the multiplicity, the result is given under an additional assumption which is always satisfied for squarefree principal Borel ideals. These results are used to analyze the behaviour of height, multiplicity and analytic spread of the homological shift ideals $HS_j(I)$ as functions of $j$, when $I$ is an equigenerated squarefree…
We describe a formula for computing the product of the Young symmetrizer of a Young tableau with the Young symmetrizer of a subtableau, generalizing the classical quasi-idempotence of Young symmetrizers. We derive some consequences to the structure of ideals in the generic tensor algebra and its partial symmetrizations. Instances of these generic algebras appear in the work of Sam and Snowden on twisted commutative algebras, as well as in the work of the author on the defining ideals of secant varieties of Segre-Veronese varieties, and in joint work of Oeding and the author on the defining ide…
Let $S=K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ be the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over a field $K$. In this paper, we compute the socle of $\cb$-bounded strongly stable ideals and determine that the saturation number of strongly stable ideals and of equigenerated $\cb$-bounded strongly stable ideals. We also provide explicit formulas for the saturation number $\sat(I)$ of Veronese type ideals $I$. Using this formula, we show that $\sat(I^k)$ is quasi-linear from the beginning and we determine the quasi-linear function explicitly.
We study the syzygies of secant ideals of Veronese subrings of a fixed commutative graded algebra over a field of characteristic 0. One corollary is that the degrees of the minimal generators of the ith syzygy module of the coordinate ring of the rth secant variety of any Veronese embedding of a projective scheme X can be bounded by a constant that only depends on i, r, and X, and not on the choice of the Veronese embedding.
Over a field of characteristic zero, we prove that for each r, there exists a constant C(r) so that the prime ideal of the rth secant variety of any Veronese embedding of any projective space is generated by polynomials of degree at most C(r). The main idea is to consider the coordinate ring of all of the ambient spaces of the Veronese embeddings at once by endowing it with the structure of a Hopf ring, and to show that its ideals are finitely generated. We also prove a similar statement for partial flag varieties and, in fact, arbitrary projective schemes, and we also get multi-graded version…
Secant varieties to Veronese embeddings of projective space are classical varieties whose equations are not completely understood. Minors of catalecticant matrices furnish some of their equations, and in some situations even generate their ideals. Geramita conjectured that this is the case for the secant line variety of the Veronese variety, namely that its ideal is generated by the 3x3 minors of any of the "middle" catalecticants. Part of this conjecture is the statement that the ideals of 3x3 minors are equal for most catalecticants, and this was known to hold set-theoretically. We prove the…
In [7] we obtained a formula for the Hilbert depth of squarefree Veronese ideals in a standard graded polynomial ring by relating it to the Hilbert depth of powers of the irrelevant maximal ideal. In this paper, we prove that these two Hilbert depth formulas are equivalent to each other. Our result reveals that there is a strong connection between these two classes of seemingly unrelated monomial ideals. We conjecture that their Stanley depths are equivalent as well.
For a monomial ideal $I$, we consider the $i$th homological shift ideal of $I$, denoted by $\text{HS}_i(I)$, that is, the ideal generated by the $i$th multigraded shifts of $I$. Some algebraic properties of this ideal are studied. It is shown that for any monomial ideal $I$ and any monomial prime ideal $P$, $\text{HS}_i(I(P))\subseteq \text{HS}_i(I)(P)$ for all $i$, where $I(P)$ is the monomial localization of $I$. In particular, we consider the homological shift ideal of some families of monomial ideals with linear quotients. For any $\textbf{c}$-bounded principal Borel ideal $I$ and for the …
We study the minimal bigraded free resolution of an ideal with three generators of the same bidegree, contained in the bihomogeneous maximal ideal $ \langle s,t\rangle \cap \langle u,v \rangle$ of the bigraded ring K[s,t;u,v]. Our analysis involves tools from algebraic geometry (Segre-Veronese varieties), classical commutative algebra (Buchsbaum-Eisenbud criteria for exactness, Hilbert-Burch theorem), and homological algebra (Koszul homology, spectral sequences). We treat in detail the case in which the bidegree is (1,n). We connect our work to a conjecture of Fröberg-Lundqvist on bigraded Hil…
In this article, we introduce a relation including ideals of an evolution algebra and hereditary subsets of vertices of its associated graph and establish some properties among them. This relation allows us to determine maximal ideals and ideals having the absorption property of an evolution algebra in terms of its associated graph. We also define a couple of order-preserving maps, one from the sets of ideals of an evolution algebra to that of hereditary subsets of the corresponding graph, and the other in the reverse direction. Conveniently restricted to the set of absorption ideals and to th…
In this paper, we study the geometry of $GT-$varieties $X_{d}$ with group a finite cyclic group $Γ\subset \mathrm{GL}(n+1,\mathbb{K})$ of order $d$. We prove that the homogeneous ideal $\mathrm{I}(X_{d})$ of $X_{d}$ is generated by binomials of degree at most $3$ and we provide examples reaching this bound. We give a combinatorial description of the canonical module of the homogeneous coordinate ring of $X_{d}$ and we show that it is generated by monomial invariants of $Γ$ of degree $d$ and $2d$. This allows us to characterize the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the homogeneous coordinate ri…
This paper studies the question of when the Rees algebras associated to arbitrary filtration of ideals are sequentially Cohen-Macaulay. Although this problem has been already investigated by N. T. Cuong, S. Goto and H. L. Truong, their situation is quite a bit of restricted, so we are eager to try the generalization of their results.
