The toric fiber product is a general procedure for gluing two ideals, homogeneous with respect to the same multigrading, to produce a new homogeneous ideal. Toric fiber products generalize familiar constructions in commutative algebra like adding monomial ideals and the Segre product. We describe how to obtain generating sets of toric fiber products in non-zero codimension and discuss persistence of normality and primary decompositions under toric fiber products.
Several applications are discussed, including (a) the construction of Markov bases of hierarchical models in many new cases, (b) a new proof of the quartic generation of binary graph models associated to $K_{4}$-minor free graphs, and (c) the recursive computation of primary decompositions of conditional independence ideals.
Let $R=\bigoplus_{\underline{n} \in \mathbb{N}^t}R_{\underline{n}}$ be a commutative Noetherian $\mathbb{N}^t$-graded ring, and $L = \bigoplus_{\underline{n}\in\mathbb{N}^t}L_{\underline{n}}$ be a finitely generated $\mathbb{N}^t$-graded $R$-module. We prove that there exists a positive integer $k$ such that for any $\underline{n} \in \mathbb{N}^t$ with $L_{\underline{n}} \neq 0$, there exists a primary decomposition of the zero submodule $O_{\underline{n}}$ of $L_{\underline{n}}$ such that for any $P \in {\rm Ass}_{R_0}(L_{\underline{n}})$, the $P$-primary component $Q$ in that primary decomp…
We express the multigraded Betti numbers of an arbitrary monomial ideal in terms of the multigraded Betti numbers of two basic classes of ideals. This decompo- sition has multiple applications. In some concrete cases, we use it to construct minimal resolutions of classes of monomial ideals; in other cases, we use it to compute projective dimensions. To illustrate the effectiveness of the structural decomposition, we give a new proof of a classic theorem by Charalambous.
Let I be either the ideal of maximal minors or the ideal of 2-minors of a row graded or column graded matrix of linear forms L. In two previous papers we showed that I is a Cartwright-Sturmfels ideal, that is, the multigraded generic initial ideal gin(I) of I is radical (and essentially independent of the term order chosen). In this paper we describe generators and prime decomposition of gin(I) in terms of data related to the linear dependences among the row or columns of the submatrices of L. In the case of 2-minors we also give a closed formula for its multigraded Hilbert series.
The aim of this paper is to introduce a method for computing Hilbert decompositions (and consequently the Hilbert depth) of a finitely generated multigraded module $M$ over the polynomial ring $K[X_1,..., X_n]$ by reducing the problem to the computation of the finite set of the new defined Hilbert partitions. Moreover, in the last section, we show that Hilbert partitions may also be used for computing the Stanley depth of the module $M$.
In this article we extend a previous definition of Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity for modules over an algebra graded by a finitely generated abelian group. Our notion of regularity is based on Maclagan and Smith's definition, and is extended first by working over any commutative base ring, and second by considering local cohomology with support in an arbitrary finitely generated graded ideal $B$, obtaining, for each $B$, a $B$-regularity region. The first extension provides a natural approach for working with families of sheaves or of graded modules, while the second opens new applications. We…
In commutative algebra, E. Miller and B. Sturmfels defined the notion of multidegree for multigraded modules over a multigraded polynomial ring. We apply this theory to bifiltered modules over the Weyl algebra D. The bifiltration is a combination of the standard filtration by the order of differential operators and of the so-called V-filtration along a coordinate subvariety of the ambient space defined by M. Kashiwara. The multidegree we define provides a new invariant for D-modules. We investigate its relation with the L-characteristic cycles considered by Y. Laurent. We give examples from th…
Primary decomposition of commutative monoid congruences is insensitive to certain features of primary decomposition in commutative rings. These features are captured by the more refined theory of mesoprimary decomposition of congruences, introduced here complete with witnesses and associated prime objects. The combinatorial theory of mesoprimary decomposition lifts to arbitrary binomial ideals in monoid algebras. The resulting binomial mesoprimary decomposition is a new type of intersection decomposition for binomial ideals that enjoys computational efficiency and independence from ground fiel…
The main purpose of this paper is to investigate prime, primary, and maximal ideals of semirings. The localization and primary decomposition of ideals in semirings are also studied.
The toric Hilbert scheme parametrizes all algebras isomorphic to a given semigroup algebra as a multigraded vectorspace. All components of the scheme are toric varieties, and among them, there is a fairly well understood coherent component. However, it is unknown whether toric Hilbert schemes are always connected. In this chapter we illustrate the use of Macaulay 2 for exploring the structure of toric Hilbert schemes. In the process we will encounter algorithms from commutative algebra, algebraic geometry, polyhedral theory and geometric combinatorics.
Primary decomposition is a very important tool of commutative algebra and geometry. In this paper we generalized some of the existing algorithms of primary decomposition developed by Eisenbud et al. (cf. [EHV]) for free modules and also filled some gaps by providing proofs of important theorems(2.9, 2.12, 2.13) appeared in [EHV]. All these algorithms are programmed and implemented in {\sc Singular}.
Irreducible decompositions of monomial ideals in polynomial rings over a field are well-understood. In this paper, we investigate decompositions in the set of monomial ideals in the semigroup ring A[\mathbb{R}_{\geq 0}^d] where A is an arbitrary commutative ring with identity. We classify the irreducible elements of this set, which we call m-irreducible, and we classify the elements that admit decompositions into finite intersections of m-irreducible ideals.
The method of double extension, introduced by A.~Medina and Ph.~Revoy, is a procedure which decomposes a Lie algebra with an invariant symmetric form into elementary pieces. Such decompositions were developed for other algebras, for instance for Lie superalgebras and associative algebras, Filippov $n$-algebras and Jordan algebras. The aim of this note is to find a unified approach to such decompositions using the derived bracket formalism. More precisely, we show that any commutative $n$-ary superalgebra with a skew-symmetric invariant form can be obtained inductively by taking orthogonal sums…
The second Veronese ideal $I_n$ contains a natural complete intersection $J_n$ generated by the principal $2$-minors of a symmetric $(n\times n)$-matrix. We determine subintersections of the primary decomposition of $J_n$ where one intersectand is omitted. If $I_n$ is omitted, the result is the other end of a complete intersection link as in liaison theory. These subintersections also yield interesting insights into binomial ideals and multigraded algebra. For example, if $n$ is even, $I_n$ is a Gorenstein ideal and the intersection of the remaining primary components of $J_n$ equals $J_n+\lan…
Students studying the Lasker-Noether theorem on primary decomposition of ideals may want to see an example of an ideal (necessarily in a non-Noetherian ring) which does not have a primary decomposition. The most well-known counterexample is alluded to in an exercise from Atiyah and MacDonald's Commutative Algebra text. It involves the ring of continuous real-valued functions on a compact Hausdorff space, and the details require the use of Urysohn's lemma from topology. In this article, we excise the unnecessary connection to topology by finding a purely algebraic counterexample in the power se…
We present Binomials, a package for the computer algebra system Macaulay2, which specializes well known algorithms to binomial ideals. These come up frequently in algebraic statistics and commutative algebra, and it is shown that significant speedup of computations like primary decomposition is possible. While central parts of the implemented algorithms go back to Eisenbud and Sturmfels (1996), we also discuss a new algorithm for computing the minimal primes of a binomial ideal. All decompositions make significant use of combinatorial structure found in binomial ideals, and to demonstrate the …
Given a square matrix $A$ with entries in a commutative ring $S$, the ideal of $S[X]$ consisting of polynomials $f$ with $f(A) =0$ is called the null ideal of $A$. Very little is known about null ideals of matrices over general commutative rings. We compute a generating set of the null ideal of a matrix in case $S = D/dD$ is the residue class ring of a principal ideal domain $D$ modulo $d\in D$. We discuss two applications. At first, we compute a decomposition of the $S$-module $S[A]$ into cyclic $S$-modules and explain the strong relationship between this decomposition and the determined gene…

Low-rank approximation of images via singular value decomposition is well-received in the era of big data. However, singular value decomposition (SVD) is only for order-two data, i.e., matrices. It is necessary to flatten a higher order input into a matrix or break it into a series of order-two slices to tackle higher order data such as multispectral images and videos with the SVD. Higher order singular value decomposition (HOSVD) extends the SVD and can approximate higher order data using sums of a few rank-one components. We consider the problem of generalizing HOSVD over a finite dimensiona…
Building on coprincipal mesoprimary decomposition [Kahle and Miller, 2014], we combinatorially construct an irreducible decomposition of any given binomial ideal. In a parallel manner, for congruences in commutative monoids we construct decompositions that are direct combinatorial analogues of binomial irreducible decompositions, and for binomial ideals we construct decompositions into ideals that are as irreducible as possible while remaining binomial. We provide an example of a binomial ideal that is not an intersection of binomial irreducible ideals, thus answering a question of Eisenbud an…
We introduce differential primary decompositions for ideals in a commutative ring. Ideal membership is characterized by differential conditions. The minimal number of conditions needed is the arithmetic multiplicity. Minimal differential primary decompositions are unique up to change of bases. Our results generalize the construction of Noetherian operators for primary ideals in the analytic theory of Ehrenpreis-Palamodov, and they offer a concise method for representing affine schemes. The case of modules is also addressed. We implemented an algorithm in Macaulay2 that computes the minimal dec…
In this paper, we give a complete description of the associated primes of every power of the edge ideal in terms of generalized ear decompositions of the graph. This result establishes a surprising relationship between two seemingly unrelated notions of Commutative Algebra and Combinatorics. It covers all previous major results in this topic and has several interesting consequences.
We establish doubly-exponential degree bounds for Gröbner bases in certain algebras of solvable type over a field (as introduced by Kandri-Rody and Weispfenning). The class of algebras considered here includes commutative polynomial rings, Weyl algebras, and universal enveloping algebras of finite-dimensional Lie algebras. For the computation of these bounds, we adapt a method due to Dubé based on a generalization of Stanley decompositions. Our bounds yield doubly-exponential degree bounds for ideal membership and syzygies, generalizing the classical results of Hermann and Seidenberg (in the c…
The commutative and homological algebra of modules over posets is developed, as closely parallel as possible to the algebra of finitely generated modules over noetherian commutative rings, in the direction of finite presentations, primary decompositions, and resolutions. Interpreting this finiteness in the language of derived categories of subanalytically constructible sheaves proves two conjectures due to Kashiwara and Schapira concerning sheaves with microsupport in a given cone. The motivating case is persistent homology of arbitrary filtered topological spaces, especially the case of multi…
Classical definitions of locally complete intersection (l.c.i.) homomorphisms of commutative rings are limited to maps that are essentially of finite type, or flat. The concept introduced in this paper is meaningful for homomorphisms phi : R \longrightarrow S of commutative noetherian rings. It is defined in terms of the structure of phi in a formal neighborhood of each point of Spec S. We characterize the l.c.i. property by different conditions on the vanishing of the André-Quillen homology of the R-algebra S. One of these descriptions establishes a very general form of a conjecture of Quille…
