Building on coprincipal mesoprimary decomposition [Kahle and Miller, 2014], we combinatorially construct an irreducible decomposition of any given binomial ideal. In a parallel manner, for congruences in commutative monoids we construct decompositions that are direct combinatorial analogues of binomial irreducible decompositions, and for binomial ideals we construct decompositions into ideals that are as irreducible as possible while remaining binomial. We provide an example of a binomial ideal that is not an intersection of binomial irreducible ideals, thus answering a question of Eisenbud and Sturmfels [1996].
We find a class of block graphs whose binomial edge ideals have minimal regularity. As a consequence, we characterize the trees whose binomial edge ideals have minimal regularity. Also, we show that the binomial edge ideal of a block graph has the same depth as its initial ideal.
We give a complete characterization of graphs whose binomial edge ideal is licci. An important tool is a new general upper bound for the regularity of binomial edge ideals.
We classify all binomial edge ideals that are complete intersection and Cohen-Macaulay almost complete intersection. We also describe an algorithm and provide an implementation to compute primary decomposition of binomial edge ideals.
We obtain an improved lower bound for the regularity of the binomial edge ideals of trees. We prove an upper bound for the regularity of the binomial edge ideals of certain subclass of block-graphs. As a consequence we obtain sharp upper and lower bounds for the regularity of binomial edge ideals of a class of trees called lobsters. We also obtain precise expressions for the regularities of binomial edge ideals of certain classes of trees and block graphs.
Let $G$ be a cycle or a complete bipartite graph. We show that the binomial edge ideal $J_{G}$ and its initial ideal with respect to the lexicographic order have the same extremal Betti number.
Closed graphs have been characterized by Herzog et al. as the graphs whose binomial edge ideals have a quadratic Gröbner basis with respect to a diagonal term order. In this paper, we focus on a generalization of closed graphs, namely weakly-closed graphs (or co-comparability graphs). Build on some results about Knutson ideals of generic matrices, we characterize weakly closed graphs as the only graphs whose binomial edge ideals are Knutson ideals for a certain polynomial $f$. In doing so, we re-prove Matsuda's theorem about the F-purity of binomial edge ideals of weakly closed graphs in posit…
In this paper we provide a full combinatorial characterization of sequentially Cohen-Macaulay binomial edge ideals of closed graphs. In addition, we show that a binomial edge ideal of a closed graph is approximately Cohen-Macaulay if and only if it is almost Cohen-Macaulay.
We compute one of the distinguished extremal Betti number of the binomial edge ideal of a block graph, and classify all block graphs admitting precisely one extremal Betti number.
We study unmixed and Cohen-Macaulay properties of the binomial edge ideal of some classes of graphs. We compute the depth of the binomial edge ideal of a generalized block graph. We also characterize all generalized block graphs whose binomial edge ideals are Cohen-Macaulay and unmixed. So that we generalize the results of Ene, Herzog and Hibi on block graphs. Moreover, we study unmixedness and Cohen-Macaulayness of the binomial edge ideal of some graph products such as the join and corona of two graphs with respect to the original graphs'.
We characterize all graphs whose binomial edge ideals have pure resolutions. Moreover, we introduce a new switching of graphs which does not change some algebraic invariants of graphs, and using this, we study the linear strand of the binomial edge ideals for some classes of graphs. Also, we pose a conjecture on the linear strand of such ideals for every graph.
Let $J_G$ be the binomial edge ideal of a graph $G$. We characterize all graphs whose binomial edge ideals, as well as their initial ideals, have regularity $3$. Consequently we characterize all graphs $G$ such that $J_G$ is extremal Gorenstein. Indeed, these characterizations are consequences of an explicit formula we obtain for the regularity of the binomial edge ideal of the join product of two graphs. Finally, by using our regularity formula, we discuss some open problems in the literature. In particular we disprove a conjecture in \cite{CDI} on the regularity of weakly closed graphs.
We give a lower bound for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of binomial edge ideals of block graphs by computing the two distinguished extremal Betti numbers of a new family of block graphs, called flower graphs. Moreover, we present a linear time algorithm to compute the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and Krull dimension of binomial edge ideals of block graphs.
We make some observations on binomial edge ideals, with the characterization of their Koszulness as motivation. Inspired by results of Ene, Herzog and Hibi, we discuss building Koszul graphs from smaller pieces in a controlled manner. We characterize the Koszul property of cone graphs and compute the dual algebra of the quadratic algebra coming from an arbitrary binomial edge ideal. We compute the first two syzygies of the infinite minimal free resolution of the residue field over the algebra defined by a binomial edge ideal, and observe that they are always linear.
We prove a conjectured upper bound for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of binomial edge ideals of graphs, due to Matsuda and Murai. Indeed, we prove that $\mathrm{reg}(J_G)\leq n-1$ for any graph $G$ with $n$ vertices, which is not a path. Moreover, we study the behavior of the regularity of binomial edge ideals under the join product of graphs.
In this paper we introduce the concept of clique disjoint edge sets in graphs. Then, for a graph $G$, we define the invariant $η(G)$ as the maximum size of a clique disjoint edge set in $G$. We show that the regularity of the binomial edge ideal of $G$ is bounded above by $η(G)$. This, in particular, settles a conjecture on the regularity of binomial edge ideals in full generality.
Let $A=\{{\bf a}_1,...,{\bf a}_m\} \subset \mathbb{Z}^n$ be a vector configuration and $I_A \subset K[x_1,...,x_m]$ its corresponding toric ideal. The paper consists of two parts. In the first part we completely determine the number of different minimal systems of binomial generators of $I_A$. We also prove that generic toric ideals are generated by indispensable binomials. In the second part we associate to $A$ a simplicial complex $Δ_{\ind(A)}$. We show that the vertices of $Δ_{\ind(A)}$ correspond to the indispensable monomials of the toric ideal $I_A$, while one dimensional facets of $Δ_{\…
We introduce a class of ideals generated by a set of 2-minors of $m\times n$-matrix of indeterminates indexed by a pair of graphs. This class of ideals is a natural common generalization of binomial edge ideals and ideals generated by adjacent minors. We determine the minimal prime ideals of such ideals and give a lower bound for their degree of nilpotency. In some special cases we compute their Gröbner basis and characterize unmixedness and Cohen--Macaulayness.
We study the Koszul property of a standard graded $K$-algebra $R$ defined by the binomial edge ideal of a pair of graphs $(G_1,G_2)$. We show that the following statements are equivalent: (i) $R$ is Koszul; (ii) the defining ideal $J_{G_1,G_2}$ of $R$ has a quadratic Gröbner basis; (iii) the graded maximal ideal of $R$ has linear quotients with respect to a suitable order of its generators
In this paper, we deal with the problem of uniqueness of minimal system of binomial generators of a semigroup ideal. Concretely, we give different necessary and/or sufficient conditions for uniqueness of such minimal system of generators. These conditions come from the study and combinatorial description of the so-called indispensable binomials in the semigroup ideal.
We determine the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of binomial edge ideals of complement reducible graphs (cographs). For cographs with $n$ vertices the maximum regularity grows as $2n/3$. We also bound the regularity by graph theoretic invariants and construct a family of counterexamples to a conjecture of Hibi and Matsuda.
We prove several cases of the Betti number conjecture for the binomial edge ideal $J_G$ of a proper interval graph $G$ (also known as closed graph). Namely, we show that this conjecture is true for the linear strand of $J_G$, and true in general for any proper interval graph $G$ such that the regularity of $S/J_G$ equals two.
We study the equality of the extremal Betti numbers of the binomial edge ideal $J_G$ and those of its initial ideal ${\rm in}(J_G)$ of a closed graph $G$. We prove that in some cases there is an unique extremal Betti number for ${\rm in}(J_G)$ and as a consequence there is an unique extremal Betti number for $J_G$ and these extremal Betti numbers are equal
The cut sets of a graph are special sets of vertices whose removal disconnects the graph. They are fundamental in the study of binomial edge ideals, since they encode their minimal primary decomposition. We introduce the class of accessible graphs as the graphs with unmixed binomial edge ideal and whose cut sets form an accessible set system. We prove that the graphs whose binomial edge ideal is Cohen-Macaulay are accessible and we conjecture that the converse holds. We settle the conjecture for large classes of graphs, including chordal and traceable graphs, providing a purely combinatorial d…
Let $G$ be a simple graph on $n$ vertices and $J_G$ denote the corresponding binomial edge ideal in $S = K[x_1, \ldots, x_n, y_1,\ldots, y_n].$ We prove that the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of $J_G$ is bounded above by $c(G)+1$ when $G$ is a quasi-block graph or semi-block graph. We give another proof of Saeedi Madani-Kiani regularity upper bound conjecture for chordal graphs. We obtain the regularity of binomial edge ideals of Jahangir graphs. Later, we establish a sufficient condition for Hibi-Matsuda conjecture to be true.
Primary decomposition of commutative monoid congruences is insensitive to certain features of primary decomposition in commutative rings. These features are captured by the more refined theory of mesoprimary decomposition of congruences, introduced here complete with witnesses and associated prime objects. The combinatorial theory of mesoprimary decomposition lifts to arbitrary binomial ideals in monoid algebras. The resulting binomial mesoprimary decomposition is a new type of intersection decomposition for binomial ideals that enjoys computational efficiency and independence from ground fiel…
We classify the bipartite graphs $G$ whose binomial edge ideal $J_G$ is Cohen-Macaulay. The connected components of such graphs can be obtained by gluing a finite number of basic blocks with two operations. In this context we prove the converse of a well-known result due to Hartshorne, showing that the Cohen-Macaulayness of these ideals is equivalent to the connectedness of their dual graphs. We study interesting properties also for non-bipartite graphs and in the unmixed case, constructing classes of bipartite graphs with $J_G$ unmixed and not Cohen-Macaulay.
We relate homological properties of a binomial edge ideal $\mathcal{J}_G$ to invariants that measure the connectivity of a simple graph $G$. Specifically, we show if $R/\mathcal{J}_G$ is a Cohen-Macaulay ring, then graph toughness of $G$ is exactly $\frac{1}{2}$. We also give an inequality between the depth of $R/\mathcal{J}_G$ and the vertex-connectivity of $G$. In addition, we study the Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity, and the Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity of $R/\mathcal{J}_G$.
We describe the simplicial complex $Δ$ such that the initial ideal of $J_G$ is the Stanley-Reisner ideal of $Δ$. By $Δ$ we show that if $J_G$ is $(S_2)$ then $G$ is accessible. We also characterize all accessible blocks with whiskers of cycle rank 3 and we define a new infinite class of accessible blocks with whiskers for any cycle rank. Finally, by using a computational approach, we show that the graphs with at most 12 vertices whose binomial edge ideal is Cohen-Macaulay are all and only the accessible ones.
We prove two recent conjectures on some upper bounds for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the binomial edge ideals of some different classes of graphs. We prove the conjecture of Matsuda and Murai for graphs which has a cut edge or a simplicial vertex, and hence for chordal graphs. We determine the regularity of the binomial edge ideal of the join of graphs in terms of the regularity of the original graphs, and consequently prove the conjecture of Matsuda and Murai for such a graph, and hence for complete $t$-partite graphs. We also generalize some results of Schenzel and Zafar about comp…
Parity binomial edge ideals of simple undirected graphs are introduced. Unlike binomial edge ideals, they do not have square-free Gröbner bases and are radical if only if the graph is bipartite or the characteristic of the ground field is not two. The minimal primes are determined and shown to encode combinatorics of even and odd walks in the graph. A mesoprimary decomposition is determined and shown to be a primary decomposition in characteristic two.
A combinatorial property that characterizes Cohen-Macaulay binomial edge ideals has long been elusive. A recent conjecture ties the Cohen-Macaulayness of a binomial edge ideal $J_G$ to special disconnecting sets of vertices of its underlying graph $G$, called \textit{cut sets}. More precisely, the conjecture states that $J_G$ is Cohen-Macaulay if and only if $J_G$ is unmixed and the collection of the cut sets of $G$ is an accessible set system. In this paper we prove the conjecture theoretically for all graphs with up to $12$ vertices and develop an algorithm that allows to computationally che…
