Let $A=\{{\bf a}_1,...,{\bf a}_m\} \subset \mathbb{Z}^n$ be a vector configuration and $I_A \subset K[x_1,...,x_m]$ its corresponding toric ideal. The paper consists of two parts. In the first part we completely determine the number of different minimal systems of binomial generators of $I_A$. We also prove that generic toric ideals are generated by indispensable binomials. In the second part we associate to $A$ a simplicial complex $Δ_{\ind(A)}$. We show that the vertices of $Δ_{\ind(A)}$ correspond to the indispensable monomials of the toric ideal $I_A$, while one dimensional facets of $Δ_{\ind(A)}$ with minimal binomial $A$-degree correspond to the indispensable binomials of $I_{A}$.
In this paper, we deal with the problem of uniqueness of minimal system of binomial generators of a semigroup ideal. Concretely, we give different necessary and/or sufficient conditions for uniqueness of such minimal system of generators. These conditions come from the study and combinatorial description of the so-called indispensable binomials in the semigroup ideal.
Let $I$ be an arbitrary ideal generated by binomials. We show that certain equivalence classes of fibers are associated to any minimal binomial generating set of $I$. We provide a simple and efficient algorithm to compute the indispensable binomials of a binomial ideal from a given generating set of binomials and an algorithm to detect whether a binomial ideal is generated by indispensable binomials.
We give a combinatorial algorithm for equivariant embedded resolution of singularities of a toric variety defined over a perfect field. The algorithm is realized by a finite succession of blowings-up with smooth invariant centres that satisfy the normal flatness criterion of Hironaka. The results extend to more general varieties defined locally by binomial equations.
Let G be a finite simple graph. In this paper we will show that the binomial edge ideal of G, JG is toric if and only if each connected component of G is complete and in this case it is the sum of toric ideal associated to bipartite complete graphs.
In 1980, White conjectured that the toric ideal of a matroid is generated by quadratic binomials corresponding to a symmetric exchange. In this paper, we compute Gröbner bases of toric ideals associated with matroids and show that, for every matroid on ground sets of size at most seven except for two matroids, Gröbner bases of toric ideals consist of quadratic binomials corresponding to a symmetric exchange.
In this paper a new classification of monomial curves in $\mathbb{A}^4(\mathbbmss{k})$ is given. Our classification relies on the detection of those binomials and monomials that have to appear in every system of binomial generators of the defining ideal of the monomial curve; these special binomials and monomials are called indispensable in the literature. This way to proceed has the advantage of producing a natural necessary and sufficient condition for the definining ideal of a monomial curve in $\mathbb{A}^4(\mathbbmss{k})$ to have a unique minimal system of binomial generators. Furthermore…
Let $I_G$ be the toric ideal of a graph $G$. We characterize in graph theoretical terms the primitive, the minimal, the indispensable and the fundamental binomials of the toric ideal $I_G$.
In this paper, we investigate three problems concerning the toric ideal associated to a matroid. Firstly, we list all matroids $\mathcal M$ such that its corresponding toric ideal $I_{\mathcal M}$ is a complete intersection. Secondly, we handle with the problem of detecting minors of a matroid $\mathcal M$ from a minimal set of binomial generators of $I_{\mathcal M}$. In particular, given a minimal set of binomial generators of $I_{\mathcal M}$ we provide a necessary condition for $\mathcal M$ to have a minor isomorphic to $\mathcal U_{d,2d}$ for $d \geq 2$. This condition is proved to be suff…
Let $G$ be a finite connected simple graph and $I_{G}$ the toric ideal of the edge ring $K[G]$ of $G$. In the present paper, we study finite graphs $G$ with the property that $I_{G}$ is generated by quadratic binomials and $I_{G}$ possesses no quadratic Gröbner basis. First, we give a nontrivial infinite series of finite graphs with the above property. Second, we implement a combinatorial characterization for $I_{G}$ to be generated by quadratic binomials and, by means of the computer search, we classify the finite graphs $G$ with the above property, up to 8 vertices.
We prove that the three-state toric homogenous Markov chain model has Markov degree two. In algebraic terminology this means, that a certain class of toric ideals are generated by quadratic binomials. This was conjectured by Haws, Martin del Campo, Takemura and Yoshida, who proved that they are generated by binomials of degree six or less.
A homogeneous ideal is robust if its universal Gröbner basis is also a minimal generating set. For toric ideals, one has the stronger definition: A toric ideal is strongly robust if its Graver basis equals the set of indispensable binomials. We characterize the codimension 2 strongly robust toric ideals by their Gale diagrams. This gives a positive answer to a question of Petrovic, Thoma, and Vladoiu in the case of codimension 2 toric ideals.
Let $I_{G} \subset K[x_{1},...,x_{m}]$ be the toric ideal associated to a finite graph $G$. In this paper we study the binomial arithmetical rank and the $G$-homogeneous arithmetical rank of $I_G$ in 2 cases: $G$ is bipartite, $I_G$ is generated by quadratic binomials. In both cases we prove that the binomial arithmetical rank and the $G$-arithmetical rank coincide with the minimal number of generators of $I_G$.
Given any equigenerated monomial ideal $I$ with the property that the defining ideal $J$ of the fiber cone $ F(I)$ of $I$ is generated by quadratic binomials, we introduce a matrix such that the set of its binomial $2$-minors is a generating set of $J$. In this way, we characterize the fiber cone of sortable and Freiman ideals.
In this paper we construct a combinatorial algorithm of resolution of singularities for binomial ideals, over a field of arbitrary characteristic. This algorithm is applied to any binomial ideal. This means ideals generated by binomial equations without any restriction, including monomials and $p$-th powers, where $p$ is the characteristic of the base field. In particular, this algorithm works for toric ideals. However, toric geometry tools are not needed, the algorithm is constructed following the same point of view as Villamayor algorithm of resolution of singularities in characteristic zero…
In 1980, White conjectured that the toric ideal associated to a matroid is generated by binomials corresponding to a symmetric exchange. In this paper, we prove that classes of matroids for which the toric ideal is generated by quadrics and that has quadratic Gröbner bases, are closed under series and parallel extensions, series and parallel connections, and 2-sums.
A toric ideal is called robust if its universal Gröbner basis is a minimal set of generators, and is called generalized robust if its universal Gröbner basis equals its universal Markov basis (the union of all its minimal sets of binomial generators). Robust and generalized robust toric ideals are both interesting from both a Commutative Algebra and an Algebraic Statistics perspective. However, only a few nontrivial examples of such ideals are known. In this work we study these properties for toric ideals of both graphs and numerical semigroups. For toric ideals of graphs, we characterize comb…
In this paper, we consider the set of all domino tilings of a cubiculated region. The primary question we explore is: How can we move from one tiling to another? Tiling spaces can be viewed as spaces of subgraphs of a fixed graph with a fixed degree sequence. Moves to connect such spaces have been explored in algebraic statistics. Thus, we approach this question from an applied algebra viewpoint, making new connections between domino tilings, algebraic statistics, and toric algebra. Using results from toric ideals of graphs, we are able to describe moves that connect the tiling space of a give…
A graph-theoretic method, simpler than existing ones, is used to characterize the minimal set of monomial generators for the integral closure of any algebra of polynomials generated by quadratic monomials. The toric ideal of relations between these generators is generated by a set of binomials, defined graphically. The spectra of the original algebra and of its integral closure turn out to be canonically homeomorphic.
Given a vertex-weighted oriented graph, we can associate to it a set of monomials. We consider the toric ideal whose defining map is given by these monomials. We find a generating set for the toric ideal for certain classes of graphs which depends on the combinatorial structure and weights of the graph. We provide a result which is analogous to the unweighted, unoriented graph case, to show that when the associated simple graph has only trivial even closed walks, the toric ideal is the zero ideal. Moreover, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the toric ideal of a weighted oriented …
Based on Nakajima's Classification Theorem we describe the precise form of the binomial equations which determine toric locally complete intersection ("l.c.i'') singularities.
In this article, we study monomial curves, toric ideals and monomial algebras associated to $4$-generated pseudo symmetric numerical semigroups. Namely, we determine indispensable binomials of these toric ideals, give a characterization for these monomial algebras to have strongly indispensable minimal graded free resolutions. We also characterize when the tangent cones of these monomial curves at the origin are Cohen-Macaulay.
In this paper, we discuss the normality of the toric rings of stable set polytopes, and the set of generators and Gröbner bases of toric ideals of stable set polytopes by using the results on that of edge polytopes of finite nonsimple graphs. In particular, for a graph of stability number two, we give a graph theoretical characterization of the set of generators of the toric ideal of the stable set polytope, and a criterion to check whether the toric ring of the stable set polytope is normal or not. One of the application of the results is an infinite family of stable set polytopes whose toric…
Hara, Takemura and Yoshida discuss toric ideals arising from two way subtable sum problems and shows that these toric ideals are generated by quadratic binomials if and only if the subtables are either diagonal or triangular. In the present paper, we show that if the subtables are either diagonal or triangular, then their toric ideals possess quadratic Groebner bases.
Relying on the combinatorial classification of toric ideals using their bouquet structure, we focus on toric ideals of hypergraphs and study how they relate to general toric ideals. We show that hypergraphs exhibit a surprisingly general behavior: the toric ideal associated to any general matrix can be encoded by that of a $0/1$ matrix, while preserving the essential combinatorics of the original ideal. We provide two universality results about the unboundedness of degrees of various generating sets: minimal, Graver, universal Gröbner bases, and indispensable binomials. Finally, we provide a p…
We study the combinatorics of Gröbner degenerations of Grassmannians and the Schubert varieties inside them. We provide a family of binomial ideals whose combinatorics is governed by tableaux induced by matching fields in the sense of Sturmfels and Zelevinsky. We prove that these ideals are all quadratically generated and they yield a SAGBI basis of the Plücker algebra. This leads to a new family of toric degenerations of Grassmannians. Moreover, we apply our results to construct a family of Gröbner degenerations of Schubert varieties inside Grassmannians. We provide a complete characterizatio…
We study the Hadamard product of two varieties $V$ and $W$, with particular attention to the situation when one or both of $V$ and $W$ is a binomial variety. The main result of this paper shows that when $V$ and $W$ are both binomial varieties, and the binomials that define $V$ and $W$ have the same binomial exponents, then the defining equations of $V \star W$ can be computed explicitly and directly from the defining equations of $V$ and $W$. This result recovers known results about Hadamard products of binomial hypersurfaces and toric varieties. Moreover, as an application of our main result…
In this paper, we discuss the toric ideals of Minkowski sums of unit simplices. More precisely, we prove that the toric ideal of Minkowski sum of unit simplices has a squarefree initial ideal and is generated by quadratic binomials. Moreover, we also prove that Minkowski sums of unit simplices have the integer decomposition property. Those results are a partial contribution to Oda conjecture and Bøgvad conjecture.
Let $I \subseteq R = \mathbb{K}[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ be a toric ideal, i.e., a binomial prime ideal. We investigate when the ideal $I$ can be "split" into the sum of two smaller toric ideals. For a general toric ideal $I$, we give a sufficient condition for this splitting in terms of the integer matrix that defines $I$. When $I = I_G$ is the toric ideal of a finite simple graph $G$, we give additional splittings of $I_G$ related to subgraphs of $G$. When there exists a splitting $I = I_1+I_2$ of the toric ideal, we show that in some cases we can describe the (multi-)graded Betti numbers of $I$ in …
In $1980$ White conjectured that every element of the toric ideal of a matroid is generated by quadratic binomials corresponding to symmetric exchanges. We prove White's conjecture for high degrees with respect to the rank. This extends our result arXiv:1302.5236 confirming White's conjecture `up to saturation'. Furthermore, we study degrees of Gröbner bases and Betti tables of the toric ideals of matroids of a fixed rank.
Using aritmethic conditions on affine semigroups we prove that for a simplicial toric variety of codimension 2 the property of being a set-theoretic complete intersection on binomials in characteristic $p$ holds either for all primes $p$, or for no prime $p$, or for exactly one prime $p$.
Describing minimal generating set of a toric ideal is a well-studied and difficult problem. In 1980 White conjectured that the toric ideal associated to a matroid is equal to the ideal generated by quadratic binomials corresponding to symmetric exchanges. We prove White's conjecture up to saturation, that is that the saturations of both ideals are equal. In the language of algebraic geometry this means that both ideals define the same projective scheme. Additionally we prove the full conjecture for strongly base orderable matroids.
To every toric ideal one can associate an oriented matroid structure, consisting of a graph and another toric ideal, called bouquet ideal. The connected components of this graph are called bouquets. Bouquets are of three types; free, mixed and non mixed. We prove that the cardinality of the following sets - the set of indispensable elements, minimal Markov bases, the Universal Markov basis and the Universal Gröbner basis of a toric ideal - depends only on the type of the bouquets and the bouquet ideal. These results enable us to introduce the strongly robustness simplicial complex and show tha…
The binomial ideal associated with the intersection axiom of conditional probability is shown to be radical and is expressed as intersection of toric prime ideals. This resolves a conjecture in algebraic statistics due to Cartwright and Engström.
The universal Gröbner basis of $I$, is a Gröbner basis for $I$ with respect to all term orders simultaneously. Let $I_G$ be the toric ideal of a graph $G$. We characterize in graph theoretical terms the elements of the universal Gröbner basis of the toric ideal $I_G$. We provide a bound for the degree of the binomials in the universal Gröbner basis of the toric ideal of a graph. Finally we give a family of examples of circuits for which their true degrees are less than the degrees of some elements of the Graver basis.
In this paper, we study a class of toric ideals obtained by using some geometric data of ADE trees which are the minimal resolution graphs of rational surface singularities. We compute explicit Gröbner bases for these toric ideals that are also minimal generating sets consisting of large number of binomials of degree $\leq 4$. In particular, they give rise to squarefree initial ideals as well.
We present examples which show that in dimension higher than one or codimension higher than two, there exist toric ideals I_A such that no binomial ideal contained in I_A and of the same dimension is a complete intersection. This result has important implications in sparse elimination theory and in the study of the Horn system of partial differential equations.
Let $G$ be a bipartite graph and $I(G)$ the toric ideal associated to the graph $G$. In this article we calculate Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity of the graph $G$ for which the toric ideal $I(G)$ is generated by a quadratic binomials and it satiesfies some conditions.
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a finite, simple graph. We consider for each oriented graph $G_{\cal O}$ associated to an orientation ${\cal O}$ of the edges of $G$, the toric ideal $P_{G_{\cal O}}$. In this paper we study those graphs with the property that $P_{G_{\cal O}}$ is a binomial complete intersection, for all ${\cal O}$. These graphs are called $\text{CI}{\cal O}$ graphs. We prove that these graphs can be constructed recursively as clique-sums of cycles and/or complete graphs. We introduce the chorded-theta subgraphs and their transversal triangles. Also we establish that the $\text{CI}{\cal O}$ gr…
We prove that the defining ideal of a sufficiently high Veronese subring of a toric algebra admits a quadratic Gröbner basis consisting of binomials. More generally, we prove that the defining ideal of a sufficiently high Veronese subring of a standard graded ring admits a quadratic Gröbner basis. We give a lower bound on $d$ such that the defining ideal of $d$-th Veronese subring admits a quadratic Gröbner basis. Eisenbud--Reeves--Totaro stated the same theorem without a proof with some lower bound on $d$. In many cases, our lower bound is less than Eisenbud--Reeves--Totaro's lower bound.
We investigate the structure of ideals generated by binomials (polynomials with at most two terms) and the schemes and varieties associated to them. The class of binomial ideals contains many classical examples from algebraic geometry, and it has numerous applications within and beyond pure mathematics. The ideals defining toric varieties are precisely the binomial prime ideals. Our main results concern primary decomposition: If $I$ is a binomial ideal then the radical, associated primes, and isolated primary components of $I$ are again binomial, and $I$ admits primary decompositions in terms …
Recently, it was shown that a binary linear code can be associated to a binomial ideal given as the sum of a toric ideal and a non-prime ideal. Since then two different generalizations have been provided which coincide for the binary case. In this paper, we establish some connections between the two approaches. In particular, we show that the corresponding code ideals are related by elimination. Finally, a new heuristic decoding method for linear codes over prime fields is discussed using Gröbner bases.
In the present paper we consider modal propositional logic and look for the constraints that are imposed to the propositions of the special type $\Box a$ by the structure of the relevant finite Kripke frame. We translate the usual language of modal propositional logic in terms of notions of commutative algebra, namely polynomial rings, ideals, and bases of ideals. We use extensively the perspective obtained in previous works in Algebraic Statistics. We prove that the constraints on $\Box a$ can be derived through a binomial ideal containing a toric ideal and we give sufficient conditions under…
We study the vanishing ideal of the parametrized algebraic toric associated to the complete multipartite graph $\G=\mathcal{K}_{α_1,...,α_r}$ over a finite field of order $q$. We give an explicit family of binomial generators for this lattice ideal, consisting of the generators of the ideal of the torus, (referred to as type I generators), a set of quadratic binomials corresponding to the cycles of length 4 in $\G$ and which generate the \emph{toric algebra of $\G$} (type II generators) and a set of binomials of degree $q-1$ obtained combinatorially from $\G$ (type III generators). Using this …
An ideal I is robust if its universal Gröbner basis is a minimal generating set for this ideal. In this paper, we generalize the meaning of robust ideals. An ideal is defined as generalized robust if its universal Gröbner basis is equal to its universal Markov basis. This article consists of two parts. In the first one, we study the generalized robustness on toric ideals of a graph G. We prove that a toric graph ideal is generalized robust if and only if its universal Markov basis is equal to the Graver basis of the ideal. Furthermore, we give a graph theoretical characterization of generalize…
Two correspondences have been provided that associate any linear code over a finite field with a binomial ideal. In this paper, algorithms for computing their Graver bases and universal Gröbner bases are given. To this end, a connection between these binomial ideals and toric ideals will be established.
Can an ideal I in a polynomial ring k[x] over a field be moved by a change of coordinates into a position where it is generated by binomials $x^a - cx^b$ with c in k, or by unital binomials (i.e., with c = 0 or 1)? Can a variety be moved into a position where it is toric? By fibering the G-translates of I over an algebraic group G acting on affine space, these problems are special cases of questions about a family F of ideals over an arbitrary base B. The main results in this general setting are algorithms to find the locus of points in B over which the fiber of F - is contained in the fiber o…
Let $a, b$ and $n > 1$ be three positive integers such that $a$ and $\sum_{j=0}^{n-1} b^j$ are relatively prime. In this paper, we prove that the toric ideal $I$ associated to the submonoid of $\mathbb{N}$ generated by $\{\sum_{j=0}^{n-1} b^j\} \cup \{\sum_{j=0}^{n-1} b^j + a\, \sum_{j=0}^{i-2} b^j \mid i = 2, \ldots, n\}$ is determinantal. Moreover, we prove that for $n > 3$, the ideal $I$ has a unique minimal system of generators if and only if $a < b-1$.
The goal of this paper is to explicitly describe a minimal binomial generating set of a class of lattice ideals, namely the ideal of certain Veronese $3$-fold projections. More precisely, for any integer $d\ge 4$ and any $d$-th root $e$ of 1 we denote by $X_d$ the toric variety defined as the image of the morphism $φ_{T_d}:\mathbb{P}^3 \longrightarrow \mathbb{P}^{μ(T_d)-1}$ where $T_d$ are all monomials of degree $d$ in $k[x,y,z,t]$ invariant under the action of the diagonal matrix $M(1,e,e^2,e^3).$ In this work, we describe a $\mathbb{Z}$-basis of the lattice $L_{η}$ associated to $I(X_d)$ as…
We study the degree of non-homogeneous lattice ideals over arbitrary fields, and give formulae to compute the degree in terms of the torsion of certain factor groups of Z^s and in terms of relative volumes of lattice polytopes. We also study primary decompositions of lattice ideals over an arbitrary field using the Eisenbud-Sturmfels theory of binomial ideals over algebraically closed fields. We then use these results to study certain families of integer matrices (PCB, GPCB, CB, GCB matrices) and the algebra of their corresponding matrix ideals. In particular, the family of generalized positiv…
Inspired by the notion of König graphs we introduce graded ideals of König type with respect to a monomial order $<$. It is shown that if $I$ is of König type, then the Cohen--Macaulay property of $\ini_<(I)$ does not depend on the characteristic of the base field. This happens to be the case also for $I$ itself when $I$ is a binomial edge ideal. Attached to an ideal of König type is a sequence of linear forms, whose elements are variables or differences of variables. This sequence is a system of parameters for $\ini_<(I)$, and is a potential system of parameters for $I$ itself. We study in de…
