D. Rees and J. Sally defined the core of an $R$-ideal $I$ as the intersection of all $($minimal$)$ reductions of $I$. However, it is not easy to give an explicit characterization of it in terms of data attached to the ideal. Until recently, the only case in which a closed formula was known is the one of integrally closed ideals in a two-dimensional regular local ring, due to C. Huneke and I. Swanson. The main result of this paper explicitly describes the core of a broad class of ideals with good residual properties in an arbitrary local Cohen-Macaulay ring. We also find sharp bounds on the number of minimal reductions that one needs to intersect to get the core.
Under suitable technical assumptions, a description is given for the generators of $s$-residual intersections of an ideal $I$ in terms of lower residual intersections, if $s \geq μ(I)-2$. This implies that $s$-residual intersections can be expressed in terms of links, if the deviation of $I$ is less than or equal to 3 and some other hypotheses are satisfied.
If $I$ is a perfect ideal in a local Cohen-Macaulay ring, the generators of ideals linked to $I$ are well understood. However, the generators of the residual intersections of $I$ have only been computed in a few special cases. In this paper, we show that the $n$-residual intersections of determinantal ideals of generic $2\times n$ matrices are sums of links.
We introduce the notion of residual intersections of modules and prove their existence. We show that projective dimension one modules have Cohen-Macaulay residual intersections, namely they satisfy the relevant Artin-Nagata property. We then establish a formula for the core of orientable modules satisfying certain homological conditions, extending previous results of Corso, Polini, and Ulrich on the core of projective one modules. Finally, we provide examples of classes of modules that satisfy our assumptions.
The properties of the intersection algebra of two principal monomial ideals in a polynomial ring are investigated in detail. Results are obtained regarding the Hilbert series and the canonical ideal of the intersection algebra using methods from the theory of diophantine linear equations with integer coefficients.
We show that the Stanley-Reisner ideal of the one-dimensional simplicial complex whose diagram is an $n$-gon is always a set-theoretic complete intersection in any positive characteristic.
We compute the reverse lexicographic generic initial ideals of the powers of a 2-complete intersection ideal I. In particular, we give six algorithms to compute these generic initial ideals, the choice of which depends on the power and on the relative degrees of the minimal generators of I.
In this paper, we study the strong Lefschetz property of artinian complete intersection ideals generated by products of linear forms. We prove the strong Lefschetz property for a class of such ideals with binomial generators.
We show that the Stanley's Conjecture holds for an intersection of four monomial prime ideals of a polynomial algebra $S$ over a field and for an arbitrary intersection of monomial prime ideals $(P_i)_{i\in [s]}$ of $S$ such that $P_i\not\subset Σ_{1=j\not =i}^s P_j$ for all $i\in [s]$.
We compute the Stanley depth of irreducible monomial ideals and we show that the Stanley depth of a monomial complete intersection ideal is the same as the Stanley depth of it's radical. Also, we give some bounds for the Stanley depth of a monomial complete intersection ideal.
In this short note, we confirm a conjecture of Vasconcelos which states that the Rees algebra of any Artinian almost complete intersection monomial ideal is almost Cohen-Macaulay.
We prove that every quasi-complete intersection ideal is obtained from a pair of nested complete intersection ideals by way of a flat base change. As a by-product we establish a rigidity statement for the minimal two-step Tate complex associated to an ideal $I$ in a local ring $R$. Furthermore, we define a minimal two-step complete Tate complex $T$ for each ideal $I$ in a local ring $R$; and prove a rigidity result for it. The complex $T$ is exact if and only if $I$ is a quasi-complete intersection ideal; and in this case, $T$ is the minimal complete resolution of $R/I$ by free $R$-modules.
In this paper we derive some conditions for transversal intersection of polynomial ideals. We exhibit some examples. Finally, as an application of the results proved, we compute the Betti numbers for ideals of the form $I_{1}(XY) + J$, where $X$ and $Y$ are matrices and $J$ is the ideal generated by the $2\times 2$ minors of the matrix consisting of any two rows of $X$.
We are interested in the structure of almost complete intersection ideals of grade 3. We give three constructions of these ideals and their free resolutions: one from the commutative algebra point of view, an equivariant construction giving a nice canonical form, andfinally an interpretation in terms of open sets in certain Schubert varieties.
In this paper, we consider a finite, torsion-free module $E$ over a Gorenstein local ring. We provide sufficient conditions for $E$ to be of linear type and for the Rees algebra $\mathcal{R}(E)$ of $E$ to be Cohen-Macaulay. Our results are obtained by constructing a generic Bourbaki $I$ ideal of $E$ and exploiting properties of the residual intersections of $I$.
Let I and J be homogeneous ideals in a standard graded polynomial ring. We study upper bounds of the Hilbert function of the intersection of I and g(J), where g is a general change of coordinates. Our main result gives a generalization of Green's hyperplane section theorem.
We prove that the $d$-component of the generic initial ideal, with respect to the reverse lexicographic order, of an ideal generated by a regular sequence of homogeneous polynomials of degree $d$ is revlex in a particular, but important, case. Using this property, we compute the generic initial ideal for several complete intersection with strong Lefschetz property.
We compute the generic initial ideal of a complete intersection of embedding dimension three with strong Lefschetz property and we show that it is an almost reverse lexicographic ideal. This enable us to give a proof for Moreno's conjecture in the case $n=3$.
In this paper we extend a result of Cowsik on set-theoretic complete intersection and a result Huneke, Morales and Goto and Nishida about Noetherian symbolic Rees algebras of ideals. As applications, we show that the symbolic Rees algebras of the following ideals are Noetherian and the ideals are set-theoretic complete intersections: (a) the edge ideal of a complete graph, (b) the Fermat ideal and (c) the Jacobian ideal of a certain hyperplane arrangement.
Let $I$ be an $m$-generated complete intersection monomial ideal in $S=K[x_1,...,x_n]$. We show that the Stanley depth of $I$ is $n-\floor{\frac{m}{2}}$. We also study the upper-discrete structure for monomial ideals and prove that if $I$ is a squarefree monomial ideal minimally generated by 3 elements, then the Stanley depth of $I$ is $n-1$.
In this article we study two classes of integral domains. The first is characterized by having a finite intersection of principal ideals being finitely generated only when it is principal. The second class consists of the integral domains in which a finite intersection of principal ideals is always non-finitely generated except in the case of containment of one of the principal ideals in all the others. We relate these classes to many well-studied classes of integral domains, to star operations and to classical and new ring constructions.
We classify all unmixed monomial ideals I of codimension 2 which are generically a complete intersection and which have the property that the symbolic power algebra A(I) is standard graded. We give a lower bound for the highest degree of a generator of A(I) in the case that I is a modification of the vertex cover ideal of a bipartite graph, and show that this highest degree can be any given number. We furthermore give an upper bound for the highest degree of a generator of the integral closure of A(I) in the case that I is a monomial ideal which is generically a complete intersection.
In this article we study the structure of residual intersections via constructing a finite complex which is acyclic under some sliding depth conditions on the cycles of the Koszul complex. This complex provides information on an ideal which coincides with the residual intersection in the case of geometric residual intersection; and is closely related to it in general. A new success obtained through studying such a complex is to prove the Cohen-Macaulayness of residual intersections of a wide class of ideals. For example we show that, in a Cohen-Macaulay local ring, any geometric residual inter…
We study Gorenstein ideals of codimension $4$ derived from generic doublings of almost complete intersection perfect ideals of codimension $3$. We also investigate spinor coordinates of such Gorenstein ideals with $8$ and $9$ generators. For an ideal $J$ of commutative ring $R$, the $R/J$ module $J/J^2$ is called conormal module and $R/J$-dual of $J/J^2$ is called normal module. We study properties of conormal and normal modules of almost complete intersection perfect ideals of codimension $3$.
In this paper, we prove a formula of Grauert-Riemenschneider canonical sheaf and log canonical thresholds for a general residual intersection as well as an equality of minimal log discrepancies under a general link. We also prove an evidence that MJ-singularities can be preserved under a general residual intersection.
We study the finite generation of the intersection algebra of two principal ideals I and J in a unique factorization domain R. We provide an algorithm that produces a list of generators of this algebra over R. In the special case that R is a polynomial ring, this algorithm has been implemented in the commutative algebra software system Macaulay2. A new class of algebras, called fan algebras, is introduced.
Let (R,m) be a local ring with prime ideals p and q such that p+q is an m-primary ideal. If R is regular and contains a field, and dim(R/p)+dim(R/q)=dim(R), we prove that p^{(r)}\cap q^{(n)}\subseteq m^{m+n} for all positive integers r and s. This is proved using a generalization of Serre's Intersection Theorem which we apply to a hypersurface R/fR. The generalization gives conditions that guarantee that Serre's bound on the intersection dimension dim(R/p)+dim(R/q) \leq dim(R) holds when R is nonregular.
An intersection of sets $A = \bigcap_{i \in I}B_i$ is irredundant if no $B_i$ can be omitted from this intersection. We develop a topological approach to irredundance by introducing a notion of a spectral representation, a spectral space whose members are sets that intersect to a given set $A$ and whose topology encodes set membership. We define a notion of a minimal representation and show that for such representations, irredundance is a topological property. We apply this approach to intersections of valuation rings and ideals. In the former case we focus on Krull-like domains and Prüfer $v$…
Let ${\sf k}$ be a field, $S$ be a bigraded ${\sf k}$-algebra, and $S_Δ$ denote the diagonal subalgebra of $S$ corresponding to $Δ= \{ (cs,es) \; | \; s \in \mathbb{Z} \}$. It is know that the $S_Δ$ is Koszul for $c,e \gg 0$. In this article, we find bounds for $c,e$ for $S_Δ$ to be Koszul, when $S$ is a geometric residual intersection. Furthermore, we also study the Cohen-Macaulay property of these algebras. Finally, as an application, we look at classes of linearly presented perfect ideals of height two in a polynomial ring, show that all their powers have a linear resolution, and study the …
We continue the study of intersection algebras $\mathcal B = \mathcal B_R(I, J)$ of two ideals $I, J$ in a commutative Noetherian ring $R$. In particular, we exploit the semigroup ring and toric structures in order to calculate various invariants of the intersection algebra when $R$ is a polynomial ring over a field and $I,J$ are principal monomial ideals. Specifically, we calculate the $F$-signature, divisor class group, and Hilbert-Samuel and Hilbert-Kunz multiplicities, sometimes restricting to certain cases in order to obtain explicit formulæ. This provides a new class of rings where formu…
A quasi-complete intersection (q.c.i.) ideal of a local ring is an ideal with "free exterior Koszul homology"; the definition can also be understood in terms of vanishing of André-Quillen homology functors. Principal q.c.i. ideals are well understood, but few constructions are known to produce q.c.i. ideals of grade zero that are not principal. This paper examines the structure of q.c.i. ideals. We exhibit conditions on a ring $R$ which guarantee that every q.c.i. ideal of $R$ is principal. On the other hand, we give an example of a minimal q.c.i. deal $I$ which does not contain any principal …
Let $R = K[x_1, x_2, x_3, x_4]$ be the polynomial ring over a field of characteristic zero. For the ideal $(x_1^a, x_2^b, x_3^c, x_4^d) \subset R$, where at least one of $a$, $b$, $c$ and $d$ is equal to two, we prove that its generic initial ideal with respect to the reverse lexicographic order is the almost revlex ideal corresponding to the same Hilbert function.
We describe prime ideals of height 2 minimally generated by 3 elements in a Gorenstein, Nagata local ring of Krull dimension 3 and multiplicity at most 3. This subject is related to a conjecture of Y. Shimoda and to a long-standing problem of J. Sally.
One describes generators of disguised residual intersections in any commutative Noetherian rings. It is shown that, over Cohen-Macaulay rings, the disguised residual intersections and algebraic residual intersections are the same, for ideals with sliding depth. This coincidence provides structural results for algebraic residual intersections in quite general setting. It is shown how the DG-algebra structure of Koszul homologies affects the determination of generators of residual intersections. In the midway it is shown that the Buchsbaum-Eisenbud family of complexes can be derived from the Kos…
Given a 0-dimensional affine K-algebra R=K[x_1,...,x_n]/I, where I is an ideal in a polynomial ring K[x_1,...,x_n] over a field K, or, equivalently, given a 0-dimensional affine scheme, we construct effective algorithms for checking whether R is a complete intersection at a maximal ideal, whether R is locally a complete intersection, and whether R is a strict complete intersection. These algorithms are based on Wiebe's characterisation of 0-dimensional local complete intersections via the 0-th Fitting ideal of the maximal ideal. They allow us to detect which generators of I form a regular sequ…
Paper has been accepted for publication in the Journal für die reine und Angewandte Mathematik. This version contains the corrections and additional references made in the Galley proofs.
This paper proves that the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularities of the product and sum of two monomial complete intersection ideals are at most the sum of the regularities of the two ideals, and provides examples showing that these inequalities do not hold for general complete intersections.
We find explicit formulas for the Hilbert series of residual intersections of a scheme in terms of the Hilbert series of its conormal modules. In a previous paper we proved that such formulas should exist. We give applications to the dimension of secant varieties of surfaces and three-folds.
We discuss a class of modules, which we call $\underline{g}$-weak complete intersection modules, inspired by the weak complete intersection ideals studied by Rahmati, Striuli, and Yang and we present explicit formulas for the generators of Koszul homology with coefficients in a $\underline{g}$-weak complete intersection module. This generalizes work of Herzog and of Corso, Goto, Huneke, Polini, and Ulrich. We use these explicit formulas to study connections between $\underline{g}$-weak complete intersection ideals and weak complete intersection ideals.
Let $G$ be a simple graph on $n$ vertices and $J_G$ denote the binomial edge ideal of $G$ in the polynomial ring $S = \mathbb{K}[x_1, \ldots, x_n, y_1, \ldots, y_n].$ In this article, we compute the second graded Betti numbers of $J_G$, and we obtain a minimal presentation of it when $G$ is a tree or a unicyclic graph. We classify all graphs whose binomial edge ideals are almost complete intersection, prove that they are generated by a $d$-sequence and that the Rees algebra of their binomial edge ideal is Cohen-Macaulay. We also obtain an explicit description of the defining ideal of the Rees …
Let $(R,\fm)$ be a local ring and $\fa$ be an ideal of $R$. The inequalities $$\begin{array}{ll} \ \Ht(\fa) \leq \cd(\fa,R) \leq \ara(\fa) \leq l(\fa) \leq μ(\fa) \end{array}$$ are known. It is an interesting and long-standing problem to find out the cases giving equality. Thanks to the formal grade we give conditions in which the above inequalities become equalities.
In this paper, we prove that the Stanley--Reisner ideal of any connected simplicial complex of dimension $\ge 2$ that is locally complete intersection is a complete intersection ideal. As an application, we show that the Stanley--Reisner ideal whose powers are Buchsbaum is a complete intersection ideal.
In this paper, we investigate the behavior of almost reverse lexicographic ideals with the Hilbert function of a complete intersection. More precisely, over a field $K$, we give a new constructive proof of the existence of the almost revlex ideal $J\subset K[x_1,\dots,x_n]$, with the same Hilbert function as a complete intersection defined by $n$ forms of degrees $d_1\leq \dots \leq d_n$. Properties of the reduction numbers for an almost revlex ideal have an important role in our inductive and constructive proof, which is different from the more general construction given by Pardue in 2010. We…
We prove that certain modules are faithful. This enables us to draw consequences about the reduction number and the integral closure of some classes of ideals.
In this paper we completely characterize lattice ideals that are complete intersections or equivalently complete intersections finitely generated semigroups of $\bz^n\oplus T$ with no invertible elements, where $T$ is a finite abelian group. We also characterize the lattice ideals that are set-theoretic complete intersections on binomials.
Wiebe's criterion, which recognizes complete intersections of dimension zero among the class of noetherian local rings, is revisited and exploited in order to provide information on what we call C.I.0-ideals (those such that the corresponding quotient is a complete intersection of dimension zero) and also on chains of C.I.0-ideals. A correspondence is established between C.I.0-ideals and a certain kind of matrices which we call $x$-nice, and a chain of C.I.0-ideals corresponds to a factorization of some $x$-nice matrix. When the local ring $A$ itself is a complete intersection of dimension zer…
We show the Cohen-Macaulayness and describe the canonical module of residual intersections $J=\mathfrak{a}\colon_R I$ in a Cohen-Macaulay local ring $R$, under sliding depth type hypotheses. For this purpose, we construct and study, using a recent article of Hassanzadeh and the second named author, a family of complexes that contains important informations on a residual intersection and its canonical module. We also determine several invariants of residual intersections as the graded canonical module, the Hilbert series, the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and the type. Finally, whenever $I$ is…
Schemes defined by residual intersections have been extensively studied in the case when they are Cohen-Macaulay, but this is a very restrictive condition. In this paper we make the first study of a class of natural examples far from satisfying this condition, the rank 1 loci of generic $2\times n$ matrices. Here we compute their depths and many other properties. These computations require a number of novel tools.
The subject matter is the structure of the Rees algebra of almost complete intersection ideals of finite colength in low-dimensional polynomial rings over fields. The main tool is a mix of Sylvester forms and iterative mapping cone construction. The material developed spins around ideals of forms in two or three variables in the search of those classes for which the corresponding Rees ideal is generated by Sylvester forms and is almost Cohen--Macaulay. A main offshoot is in the case where the forms are monomials. Another consequence is a proof that the Rees ideals of the base ideals of certain…
