The skew mean curvature flow(SMCF), which origins from the study of fluid dynamics, describes the evolution of a codimension two submanifold along its binormal direction. We study the basic properties of the SMCF and prove the existence of a short-time solution to the initial value problem of the SMCF of compact surfaces in Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^4$. A Sobolev-type embedding theorem for the second fundamental forms of two dimensional surfaces is also proved, which might be of independent interest.
We classify the connected pseudo-Riemannian manifolds of signature $(p,q)$ with $q\ge5$ so that at each point of $M$ the skew-symmetric curvature operator has constant rank 2 and constant Jordan normal form on the set of spacelike 2 planes and so that the skew-symmetric curvature operator is not nilpotent for at least one point of $M$.
We construct almost complex algebraic curvature tensors for pseudo Hermitian inner products whose skew-symmetric curvature operator has constant Jordan normal form on the set of non-degenerate complex lines.
The Skew Mean Curvature Flow(SMCF) is a Schrödinger-type geometric flow canonically defined on a co-dimension two submanifold, which generalizes the famous vortex filament equation in fluid dynamics. In this paper, we prove the local existence and uniqueness of general dimensional SMCF in Euclidean spaces.
In this paper, we classify the rotational surfaces with constant skew curvature in $3$-space forms. We also give a variational characterization of the profile curves of these surfaces as critical points of a curvature energy involving the exponential of the curvature of the curve. Finally, we provide a converse process to produce all rotational surfaces with constant skew curvature based on the evolution of a critical curve under the flow of its binormal vector field with prescribed velocity.
Let R be an algebraic curvature tensor for a non-degenerate inner product of signature(p,q) where q>4. If $π$ is a spacelike 2 plane, let $R(π)$ be the associated skew-symmetric curvature operator. We classify the algebraic curvature tensors so R(-) has constant rank 2 and show these are geometrically realizable by hypersurfaces in flat spaces. We also classify the Ivanov-Petrova algebraic curvature tensors of rank 2; these are the algebraic curvature tensors of constant rank 2 such that the complex Jordan normal form of R(-) is constant.
There is considered a connection with skew symmetric torsion on a quasi-Kähler manifold with Norden metric. Some necessary and sufficient conditions are derived for the corresponding curvature tensor to be Kählerian. In the case when this tensor is Kählerian, some relations are obtained between its scalar curvature and the scalar curvature of other curvature tensors. Conditions are given for the considered manifolds to be isotropic-Kähler.
A Riemannian manifold is called IP, if the eigenvalues of its skew-symmetric curvature operator are pointwise constant. It was previously shown that for all n\ge 4, except n=7, any IP manifold either has constant curvature, or is a warped product, with some specific function, of a line and a space of constant curvature. We extend this result to the case n = 7, and also study 3-dimensional IP manifolds.
The skew mean curvature flow (SMCF) is a natural generalization of the famous vortex filament equation. In this note, we show that the Gauss map of the SMCF satisfies a Schrödinger flow equation. In this regard, we explore the geometry of the oriented Grassmannian manifold explicitly by embedding it into the exterior product space.
We consider a 4-dimensional Riemannian manifold M endowed with a right skew-circulant tensor structure S, which is an isometry with respect to the metric g and the fourth power of S is minus identity. We determine a class of manifolds (M, g, S), whose curvature tensors are invariant under S. For such manifolds we obtain properties of the Ricci tensor. Also we get expressions of the sectional curvatures of some special 2-planes in a tangent space of (M, g, S).
A natural connection with totally skew-symmetric torsion on almost contact manifolds with B-metric is constructed. The class of these manifolds, where the considered connection exists, is determined. Some curvature properties for this connection, when the corresponding curvature tensor has the properties of the curvature tensor for the Levi-Civita connection and the torsion tensor is parallel, are obtained.
A pseudo-Riemannian manifold is said to be spacelike Jordan IP if the Jordan normal form of the skew-symmetric curvature operator depends upon the point of the manifold, but not upon the particular spacelike 2-plane in the tangent bundle at that point. We use methods of algebraic topology to classify connected spacelike Jordan IP pseudo-Riemannian manifolds of signature $(p,q)$, where $q\ge 11$, $p\le \frac{q-6}{4}$ and where the set $\{q, . . ., q+p\}$ does not contain a power of 2.
A necessary condition for a connection in a vector bundle to be locally metric is for its curvature matrix, which consists of $2$ forms, to be skew symmetric with respect to some local frame. In this paper we give a simple algorithm that can be used to decide when a matrix of $2$ forms is equivalent to a skew symmetric matrix. We apply this algorithm to verify whether a "{\it full rank}" curvature connection is locally metric.
In this work, we investigate the problem of finding surfaces in the Lorentz-Minkowski 3-space with prescribed skew ($S$) and mean ($H$) curvatures, which are defined through the discriminant of the characteristic polynomial of the shape operator and its trace, respectively. After showing that $H$ and $S$ can be interpreted in terms of the expected value and standard deviation of the normal curvature seen as a random variable, we address the problem of prescribed curvatures for surfaces of revolution. For surfaces with a non-lightlike axis and prescribed $H$, the strategy consists in rewriting …
A skew loop is a closed curve without parallel tangent lines. We prove: The only complete surfaces in euclidean 3-space with a point of positive curvature and no skew loops are the quadrics. In particular, ellipsoids are the only closed surfaces without skew loops. We also prove results about skew loops on cylinders and positively curved surfaces.
Let E be a natural operator associated to the curvature tensor of a pseudo-Riemannian manifold. This survey article studies when the spectrum, or more generally the real Jordan normal form, of E is constant on the natural domain of definition. It deals with results for the Jacobi operator, the higher order Jacobi operator, the Szabo operator, and the skew-symmetric curvature operator. Some results in the complex setting are presented as well for the skew-symmetric curvature operator.
We investigate the integral conditions to extend the mean curvature flow in a Riemannian manifold. We prove that the mean curvature flow solution with finite total mean curvature on a finite time interval $[0,T)$ can be extended over time $T$. Moreover, we show that the condition is optimal in some sense.
We prove existence in the Minkowski space of entire spacelike hypersurfaces with constant negative scalar curvature and given set of lightlike directions at infinity; we also construct the entire scalar curvature flow with prescribed set of lightlike directions at infinity, and prove that the flow converges to a spacelike hypersurface with constant scalar curvature. The proofs rely on barriers construction and a priori estimates.
We study graphical mean curvature flow of complete solutions defined on subsets of Euclidean space. We obtain smooth long time existence. The projections of the evolving graphs also solve mean curvature flow. Hence this approach allows to smoothly flow through singularities by studying graphical mean curvature flow with one additional dimension.
Given a compact four dimensional smooth Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ with smooth boundary, we consider the evolution equation by $Q$-curvature in the interior keeping the $T$-curvature and the mean curvature to be zero and the evolution equation by $T$-curvature at the boundary with the condition that the $Q$-curvature and the mean curvature vanish. Using integral method, we prove global existence and convergence for the $Q$-curvature flow (resp $T$-curvature flow) to smooth metric of prescribed $Q$-curvature (resp $T$-curvature) under conformally invariant assumptions.
We provide explicit examples which show that mean convexity (i.e. positivity of the mean curvature) and positivity of the scalar curvature are non-preserved curvature conditions for hypersurfaces of the Euclidean space evolving under either the volume- or the area preserving mean curvature flow. The relevance of our examples is that they disprove some statements of the previous literature, overshadow a widespread folklore conjecture about the behaviour of these flows and bring out the discouraging news that a traditional singularity analysis is not possible for constrained versions of the mean…
It is well-known that the mean curvature flow is a formal gradient flow of the perimeter functional. However, by the work of Michor and Mumford [7,8], the formal Riemannian structure that is compatible with the gradient flow structure induces a degenerate metric on the space of hypersurfaces. It is then natural to ask whether there is a nondegenerate metric space of hypersurfaces, on which the mean curvature flow admits a gradient flow structure. In this paper we study the mean curvature flow on two nondegenerate metric spaces of simple closed plane curves: the uniformness-preserving metric st…
In [5], Sáez and Schnürer studied the graphical mean curvature flow of complete hypersurfaces defined on subsets of Euclidean space. They obtained long time existence. Moreover, they provided a new interpretation of weak mean curvature flow. In this paper, we generalize their results to a general curvature setting. Our key ingredient is the existence result of general curvature flow with boundary conditions, which is proved in Section 4.
Given a closed 3-manifold with an initial Riemannian metric of negative sec- tional curvature, we consider the cross curvature flow an evolution equation of metric on M3. We prove long-time existence of a solution to the cross curvature flow via the maximum principle theorem. Besides, we demonstrate the solution exists for all time and converges pointwisely to a hyperbolic metric
We study the volume of compact Riemannian manifolds which are Einstein with respect to a metric connection with (parallel) skew-torsion. We provide a result for the sign of the first variation of the volume in terms of the corresponding scalar curvature. This generalizes a result of M. Ville, related with the first variation of the volume on a compact Einstein manifold.
In this work, we propose a new evolving geometric flow (called translating mean curvature flow) for the translating solitons of hypersurfaces in $R^{n+1}$. We study the basic properties, such as positivity preserving property, of the translating mean curvature flow. The Dirichlet problem for the graphical translating mean curvature flow is studied and the global existence of the flow and the convergence property are also considered.
We establish the longtime existence and convergence results of the mean curvature flow of entire Lagrangian graphs in Pseudo-Euclidean space which is related to Logarithmic gradient flow.
In this paper, we study the convexity, interior gradient estimate, Liouville type theorem and asymptotic behavior at infinity of translating solutions to mean curvature flow as well as the nonlinear flow by powers of the mean curvature.
We introduce a regularization method for mean curvature flow of a submanifold of arbitrary codimension in the Euclidean space, through higher order equations. We prove that the regularized problems converge to the mean curvature flow for all times before the first singularity.
In this paper, we first investigate the integral curvature condition to extend the mean curvature flow of submanifolds in a Riemannian manifold with codimension $d\geq1$, which generalizes the extension theorem for the mean curvature flow of hypersurfaces due to Le-Šešum \cite{LS} and the authors \cite{XYZ1,XYZ2}. Using the extension theorem, we prove two convergence theorems for the mean curvature flow of closed submanifolds in ${R}^{n+d}$ under suitable integral curvature conditions.
In [Vel94], Velazquez constructed a countable collection of mean curvature flow solutions in $\mathbb{R}^N$ in every dimension $N \ge 8$. Each of these solutions becomes singular in finite time at which time the second fundamental form blows up. In contrast, we confirm here that, in every dimension $N \ge 8$, a nontrivial subset of these solutions has uniformly bounded mean curvature.
We establish short-time existence of the smooth solution to the fractional mean curvature flow when the initial set is bounded and C^{1,1}-regular. We provide the same result also for the volume preserving fractional mean curvature flow.
We prove the existence of closed convex ancient solutions to curvature flows which become more and more oval for large negative times. The speed function is a general symmetric function of the principal curvatures, homogeneous of degree greater than one. This generalises previous work on the mean curvature flow and other one-homogeneous curvature flows. As an auxiliary result, we prove a new theorem on the convergence to a round point of convex rotationally symmetric hypersurfaces satisfying a suitable constraint on the curvatures.
In this paper, we prove that the mean curvature blows up at the same rate as the second fundamental form at the first singular time $T$ of any compact, Type I mean curvature flow. For the mean curvature flow of surfaces, we obtain similar result provided that the Gaussian density is less than two. Our proofs are based on continuous rescaling and the classification of self-shrinkers. We show that all notions of singular sets defined in \cite{St} coincide for any Type I mean curvature flow, thus generalizing the result of Stone who established that for any mean convex Type I Mean curvature flow.…
It is conjectured that the mean curvature blows up at the first singular time of the mean curvature flow in Euclidean space, at least in dimensions less or equal to 7. We show that the mean curvature blows up at the singularities of the mean curvature flow starting from an immersed closed hypersurface with small L^2-norm of the traceless second fundamental form (observe that the initial hypersurface is not necessarily convex). As a consequence of the proof of this result we also obtain the dynamic stability of a sphere along the mean curvature flow with respect to the L^2-norm.
We consider curvature flows in hyperbolic space with a monotone, symmetric, homogeneous of degree 1 curvature function F. Furthermore we assume F to be either concave and inverse concave or convex. For compact initial hypersurfaces, which are strictly convex by horospheres, we show the long time existence of mixed volume preserving curvature flows. Furthermore we show that these flows converge exponentially in the C-infinity topology to a geodesic sphere.
In this note, we first prove that the solution of mean curvature flow on a finite time interval $[0,T)$ can be extended over time $T$ if the space-time integration of the norm of the second fundamental form is finite. Secondly, we prove that the solution of certain mean curvature flow on a finite time interval $[0,T)$ can be extended over time $T$ if the space-time integration of the mean curvature is finite. Moreover, we show that these conditions are optimal in some sense.
In this paper we study the geometry of first time singularities of the mean curvature flow. By the curvature pinching estimate of Huisken and Sinestrari, we prove that a mean curvature flow of hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space $\R^{n+1}$ with positive mean curvature is $κ$-noncollapsing, and a blow-up sequence converges locally smoothly along a subsequence to a smooth, convex blow-up solution. As a consequence we obtain a local Harnack inequality for the mean convex flow.
In this paper, we consider the problem of prescribing scalar curvature on n-sphere. Assume that the candidate curvature function $f$, which is allowed to change sign, satisfies some kind of Morse index or symmetry condition. By studying the well-known scalar curvature flow, we are able to prove that the flow converges to a metric with the prescribed function $f$ as its scalar curvature.
In this note we announce results on the mean curvature flow of mean convex sets in 3-dimensions. Loosely speaking, our results justify the naive picture of mean curvature flow where the only singularities are neck pinches, and components which collapse to asymptotically round spheres.
We show that mean curvature flow of a compact submanifold in a complete Riemannian manifold cannot form singularity at time infinity if the ambient Riemannian manifold has bounded geometry and satisfies certain curvature and volume growth conditions .
In this paper we analyze the behavior of the distance function under Ricci flows whose scalar curvature is uniformly bounded. We will show that on small time-intervals the distance function is $\frac12$-Hölder continuous in a uniform sense. This implies that the distance function can be extended continuously up to the singular time.
We show existence of ancient solutions to the rescaled mean curvature flow starting from a given asymptotically conical self-expander. These are examples of mean curvature flows coming out of cones that are not self-similar. We also show a strong uniqueness theorem when the cone is generic and use it to classify mean curvature flows coming out of generic cones of small entropy in low dimensions.
In this paper we prove a local curvature estimate for the $κ$-LYZ flow over Kähler manifolds introduced in [FGP1] and [LYZ]. In particular, we generalize the long time existence of the flow.
A possible evolution of a compact hypersurface in R^n by mean curvature past singularities is defined via the level set flow. In the case that the initial hypersurface has positive mean curvature, we show that the Brakke flow associated to the level set flow is actually a Brakke flow with equality. We obtain as a consequence that no mass drop can occur along such a flow. As a further application of the techniques used above we give a new variational formulation for mean curvature flow of mean convex hypersurfaces.
We consider the Laplace normal vector field of relatively normalized ruled surfaces with non-vanishing Gaussian curvature in the three-dimensional Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{3}$. We determine all ruled surfaces and all relative normalizations for which the Laplace normal image degenerates into a point or into a curve. Moreover, we study the Laplace normal image of a non-conoidal ruled surface whose relative normals lie on the asymptotic plane.
Streets and Tian introduced pluriclosed flow and symplectic curvature flow in recent years. Here we construct a curvature flow to unify these two flows. We show the short time existence of our flow and exhibit an obstruction to long time existence.
We study the provenance of singularity formation under mean curvature flow and volume preserving mean curvature flow in an axially symmetric setting. We prove that if the mean curvature is uniformly bounded on any finite time interval, then no singularities can develop during that time under both mean curvature flow and volume preserving mean curvature flow.
A graph (digraph) $G=(V,E)$ with a set $T\subseteq V$ of terminals is called inner Eulerian if each nonterminal node $v$ has even degree (resp. the numbers of edges entering and leaving $v$ are equal). Cherkassky and Lovász showed that the maximum number of pairwise edge-disjoint $T$-paths in an inner Eulerian graph $G$ is equal to $\frac12\sum_{s\in T} λ(s)$, where $λ(s)$ is the minimum number of edges whose removal disconnects $s$ and $T-\{s\}$. A similar relation for inner Eulerian digraphs was established by Lomonosov. Considering undirected and directed networks with ``inner Eulerian'' ed…
In this paper, we investigate the mean curvature flow of compact surfaces in $4$-dimensional space forms. We prove the convergence theorems for the mean curvature flow under certain pinching conditions involving the normal curvature, which generalise Baker-Nguyen's convergence theorem.
In this paper, we discuss uniqueness and backward uniqueness for mean curvature flow of non-compact manifolds. We use an energy argument to prove two uniqueness theorems for mean curvature flow with possibly unbounded curvatures. These generalize the results by Chen and Yin. Using similar method, we also obtain a uniqueness result on Ricci flows. A backward uniqueness theorem is also proved for mean curvature flow with bounded curvatures.
In this paper, we derive a mean curvature estimate for eternal solutions (including translating solutions) of almost-calibrated Lagrangian mean curvature flow in complex Euclidean space. As a consequence, we show a non-existence result for eternal solutions of almost-calibrated Lagrangian mean curvature flow.
