We consider a 4-dimensional Riemannian manifold M endowed with a right skew-circulant tensor structure S, which is an isometry with respect to the metric g and the fourth power of S is minus identity. We determine a class of manifolds (M, g, S), whose curvature tensors are invariant under S. For such manifolds we obtain properties of the Ricci tensor. Also we get expressions of the sectional curvatures of some special 2-planes in a tangent space of (M, g, S).
We study hyper-spheres, spheres and circles, with respect to an indefinite metric, in a tangent space on a 4-dimensional differentiable manifold. The manifold is equipped with a positive definite metric and an additional tensor structure of type (1, 1)11. The fourth power of the additional structure is minus identity and its components form a skew-circulant matrix in some local coordinate system. The both structures are compatible and they determine an associated indefinite metric on the manifold.
A 4-dimensional Riemannian manifold equipped with a circulant structure, which is an isometry with respect to the metric and its fourth power is the identity, is considered. The almost product manifold associated with the considered manifold is studied. The relation between the covariant derivatives of the almost product structure and the circulant structure is obtained. The conditions for the covariant derivative of the circulant structure, which imply that an almost product manifold belongs to each of the basic classes of the Staikova-Gribachev classification, are given.
We consider a three-dimensional Riemannian manifold equipped with two circulant structures - a metric g and a structure q, which is an isometry with respect to g and the third power of q is minus identity. We discuss some curvature properties of this manifold, we give an example of such a manifold and find a condition for q to be parallel with respect to the Riemannian connection of g.
In the present paper it is considered a class V of 3-dimensional Riemannian manifolds M with a metric g and two affinor tensors q and S. It is defined another metric \bar{g} in M. The local coordinates of all these tensors are circulant matrices. It is found: 1)\ a relation between curvature tensors R and \bar{R} of g and \bar{g}, respectively; 2)\ an identity of the curvature tensor R of g in the case when the curvature tensor \bar{R} vanishes; 3)\ a relation between the sectional curvature of a 2-section of the type \{x, qx\} and the scalar curvature of M.
We consider a $3$-dimensional differentiable manifold with two circulant structures -- a Riemannian metric and an additional structure, whose third power is the identity. The structure is compatible with the metric such that an isometry is induced in any tangent space of the manifold. Further, we consider an associated metric with the Riemannian metric, which is necessary indefinite. We find equations of a sphere and of a circle, which are given in terms of the associated metric, with respect to the Riemannian metric.
It is studied a 3-dimensional Riemannian manifold equipped with a tensor structure of type (1,1), whose third power is the identity. This structure has a circulant matrix with respect to some basis, i.e. the structure is circulant. On such a manifold a fundamental tensor by the metric and by the covariant derivative of the circulant structure is defined. An important characteristic identity for this tensor is obtained. It is established that the image of the fundamental tensor with respect to the usual conformal transformation satisfies the same identity. A Lie group as a manifold of the consi…
We consider a $4$-dimensional Riemannian manifold $M$ equip\-ped with a circulant structure $q$, which is an isometry with respect to the metric $g$ and $q^{4}=\id$, $q^{2}\neq \pm \id$. For such a manifold $(M, g, q)$ we obtain some assertions for the sectional curvatures of $2$-planes. We construct an example of such a manifold on a Lie group and we find some of its geometric characteristics.
A 4-dimensional Riemannian manifold M, equipped with an additional tensor structure S, whose fourth power is minus identity, is considered. The structure S has a skew-circulant matrix with respect to some basis of the tangent space at a point on M. Moreover, S acts as an isometry with respect to the metric g. A fundamental tensor is defined on such a manifold (M,g,S) by g and by the covariant derivative of S. This tensor satisfies a characteristic identity which is invariant to the usual conformal transformation. Some curvature properties of (M,g,S) are obtained. A Lie group as a manifold of t…
We consider a 3-dimensional Riemannian manifold M with two circulant structures -- a metric g and an endomorphism q whose third power is identity. The structure q is compatible with g such that an isometry is induced in any tangent space of M. We obtain some curvature properties of this manifold (M, g, q) and give an explicit example of such a manifold.
A 4-dimensional Riemannian manifold equipped with an endomorphism of the tangent bundle, whose fourth power is the identity, is considered. The matrix of this structure in some basis is circulant and the structure acts as an isometry with respect to the metric. Such manifolds are constructed on 4-dimensional real Lie groups with Lie algebras of two remarkable types. Some of their geometric characteristics are obtained.
We consider a four dimensional Riemannian manifold M with a metric g and an affinor structure q. We note the local coordinates of g and q are circulant matrices. Their first orders are (A, B, C, B), A, B, C \in FM and (0, 1, 0, 0), respectively. Let \nabla be the connection of g. Further, let mu_{1}, mu_{2},mu_{3}, mu_{4}, mu_{5}, mu_{6} be the sectional curvatures of 2-sections {x, qx}, {x, q^{2}x}, {q^{3}x, x}, {qx, q^{2}x}, {qx, q^{3}x}, {q^{2}x, q^{3}x} for arbitrary vector x in T_{p}M$, p is in M . Then we have that q^{4}=E; g(qx, qy)=g(x,y), x, y are in chiM. The main results of the pres…
We consider a class (M, g, q) of four-dimensional Riemannian manifolds M, where besides the metric g there is an additional structure q, whose fourth power is the unit matrix. We use the existence of a local coordinate system such that there the coordinates of g and q are circulant matrices. In this system q has constant coordinates and q is an isometry with respect to g. By the special identity for the curvature tensor R generated by the Riemannian connection of g we define a subclass of (M, g, q). For any (M, g, q) in this subclass we get some assertions for the sectional curvatures of two-p…
We consider a 3-dimensional Riemannian manifold V with a metric g and an affinor structure q. The local coordinates of these tensors are circulant matrices. In V we define an almost conformal transformation. Using that definition we construct an infinite series of circulant metrics which are successively almost conformaly related. In this case we get some properties.
A 3-dimensional Riemannian manifold equipped with a tensor structure of type $(1,1)$, whose third power is the identity, is considered. This structure and the metric have circulant matrices with respect to some basis, i.e., these structures are circulant. An associated manifold, whose metric is expressed by both structures, is studied. Three classes of such manifolds are considered. Two of them are determined by special properties of the curvature tensor of the manifold. The third class is composed by manifolds whose structure is parallel with respect to the Levi-Civita connection of the metri…
In this paper, we will first derive a DDVV-type optimal inequality for real skew-symmetric matrices, then we apply it to establish a Simons-type integral inequality for Riemannian submersions with totally geodesic fibres and Yang-Mills horizontal distributions. In this way, we show phenomenons of duality between Submanifold geometry and Riemannnian submersion, particularly between second fundamental form of a submanifold and integrability tensor of a Riemannian submersion.
We find geometric conditions on a four-dimensional Hermitian manifold endowed with a metric connection with totally skew-symmetric torsion under which the complex structure is a harmonic map from the manifold into its twistor space considered with a natural family of Riemannian metrics defined by means of the metric and the given connection on the base manifold.
We introduce warped product skew semi-invariant submanifolds of order $1$ of a locally product Riemannian manifold. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for skew semi-invariant submanifold of order 1 to be a locally warped product. We also prove that the invariant distribution which is involved in the definition of the submanifold is integrable under some restrictions. Moreover, we find an inequality between the warping function and the squared norm of the second fundamental form for such submanifolds. Equality case is also discussed.
A Riemannian manifold is called IP, if the eigenvalues of its skew-symmetric curvature operator are pointwise constant. It was previously shown that for all n\ge 4, except n=7, any IP manifold either has constant curvature, or is a warped product, with some specific function, of a line and a space of constant curvature. We extend this result to the case n = 7, and also study 3-dimensional IP manifolds.
A geometry with parallel skew-symmetric torsion is a Riemannian manifold carrying a metric connection with parallel skew-symmetric torsion. Besides the trivial case of the Levi-Civita connection, geometries with non-vanishing parallel skew-symmetric torsion arise naturally in several geometric contexts, e.g. on naturally reductive homogeneous spaces, nearly Kähler or nearly parallel $\mathrm{G}_2$-manifolds, Sasakian and $3$-Sasakian manifolds, or twistor spaces over quaternion-Kähler manifolds with positive scalar curvature. In this paper we study the local structure of Riemannian manifolds c…
We consider a four dimensional Riemannian manifold M with a metric g and an affinor structure q. We note the local coordinates of g and q are circulant matrices. Their first orders are (A, B, C, B)(A, B, C are smooth functions on M) and (0, 1, 0, 0), respectively. Let nabla be the connection of g. Then we obtain: 1) q^{4}=id; g(qx, qy)=g(x,y), x, y are arbitrary vector fields on M, 2) nabla q =0 if and only if grad A=(grad C)q^{2}; 2.grad B= (grad C)(q+q^{3}),
The paper is devoted to metric connections with parallel skew-symmetric torsion in Lorentzian signature. This is motivated by recent progress in the Riemannian signature and by possible applications to supergravity theories. We provide a complete information about holonomy algebras, torsion and curvature of the considered connections up to the corresponding objects from the Riemannian signature. Various examples are constructed. It is shown how to construct all simply connected Lorentzian naturally reductive homogeneous spaces of arbitrary dimension from Riemannian naturally reductive homogene…
On a sub-Riemannian manifold, a connection with skew-symmetric torsion is defined as the unique connection from the class of $N$-connections that has this property. Two cases are considered separately: sub-Riemannian structure of even rank, and sub-Riemannian structure of odd rank. The resulting connection, called the canonical connection, is not a metric connection in the case when the sub-Riemannian structure is of even rank. The structure of an almost quasi-Sasakian manifold is defined as an almost contact metric structure of odd rank that satisfies additional requirements. Namely, it is re…
We show that a connection with skew-symmetric torsion satisfying the Einstein metricity condition exists on an almost contact metric manifold exactly when it is D-homothetic to a cosymplectic manifold. In dimension five, we get that the existence of a connection with skew torsion satisfying the Einstein metricity condition is equivalent to the existence of a Sasaki-Einstein 5-manifold and vice versa, any Sasaki-Einstein 5-manifold generates a two parametric family of connections with skew torsion satisfying the Einstein metricity condition. Formulas for the curvature and the Ricci tensors of t…
This paper is devoted to the classification of 4-dimensional Riemannian spin manifolds carrying skew Killing spinors. A skew Killing spinor $ψ$ is a spinor that satisfies the equation $\nabla$X$ψ$ = AX $\times$ $ψ$ with a skew-symmetric endomorphism A. We consider the degenerate case, where the rank of A is at most two everywhere and the non-degenerate case, where the rank of A is four everywhere. We prove that in the degenerate case the manifold is locally isometric to the Riemannian product R x N with N having a skew Killing spinor and we explain under which conditions on the spinor the spec…
We develop a notion of Einstein manifolds with skew torsion on compact, orientable Riemannian manifolds of dimension four. We prove an analogue of the Hitchin-Thorpe inequality and study the case of equality. We use the link with self-duality to study the moduli space of 1-instantons on the 4-sphere for a family of metrics defined by Bonneau.
We classify the connected pseudo-Riemannian manifolds of signature $(p,q)$ with $q\ge5$ so that at each point of $M$ the skew-symmetric curvature operator has constant rank 2 and constant Jordan normal form on the set of spacelike 2 planes and so that the skew-symmetric curvature operator is not nilpotent for at least one point of $M$.
We construct a family of pseudo-Riemannian manifolds so that the skew-symmetric curvature operator, the Jacobi operator, and the Szabo operator have constant eigenvalues on their domains of definition. This provides new and non-trivial examples of Osserman, Szabo, and IP manifolds. We also study when the associated Jordan normal form of these operators is constant.
In this paper, we study the existence of a skew Killing spinor (see the definition below) on 2 and 3-dimensional Riemannian spin manifolds. We establish the integrability conditions and prove that these spinor fields correspond to twistor spinors in the two dimensional case while, up to a conformal change of the metric, they correspond to parallel spinors in the three dimensional case.
In this note, we discuss symmetric brackets on skew-symmetric algebroids associated with a metric structure. Given a pseudo-Riemannian metric structure, we describe symmetric brackets induced by connections with totally skew-symmetric torsion in the language of Lie derivatives and differentials of functions. In particular, we obtain an explicit formula of the Levi-Civita connection. We also present some symmetric brackets on almost Hermitian manifolds. Especially, we discuss the first canonical Hermitian connection and show the formula for it in the case of nearly Kaehler manifolds using the p…
On a Riemannian almost product manifold $(M,P,g)$ we consider a linear connection preserving the almost product structure $P$ and the Riemannian metric $g$ and having a totally skew-symmetric torsion. We determine the class of the manifolds $(M,P,g)$ admitting such a connection and prove that this connection is unique in terms of the covariant derivative of $P$ with respect to the Levi-Civita connection. We find a necessary and sufficient condition the curvature tensor of the considered connection to have similar properties like the ones of the Kähler tensor in Hermitian geometry. We pay atten…
We study the volume of compact Riemannian manifolds which are Einstein with respect to a metric connection with (parallel) skew-torsion. We provide a result for the sign of the first variation of the volume in terms of the corresponding scalar curvature. This generalizes a result of M. Ville, related with the first variation of the volume on a compact Einstein manifold.
We consider a four dimensional Riemannian manifold M with a metric g and affinor structure q. The local coordinates of these tensors are circulant matrices. Their first orders are (A, B, C, B), A, B, C\in FM and (0, 1, 0, 0), respectively. We construct another metric \tilde{g} on M. We find the conditions for \tilde{g} to be a positively defined metric, and for q to be a parallel structure with respect to the Riemannian connection of g. Further, let x be an arbitrary vector in T_{p}M, where p is a point on M. Let ϕand ϕbe the angles between x and qx, x and q^{2}x with respect to g. We express …
We study Spin(9)-structures on 16-dimensional Riemannian manifolds and characterize the geometric types admitting a connection with totally skew-symmetric torsion.
In this paper, we prove that the deformed Riemannian extension of any affine Szabó manifold is a Szabó pseudo-Riemannian metric and vice-versa. We proved that the Ricci tensor of an affine surface is skew-symmetric and nonzero everywhere if and only if the affine surface is Szabó. We also find the necessary and sufficient condition for the affine Szabó surface to be recurrent. We prove that for an affine Szabó recurrent surface the recurrence covector of a recurrence tensor is not locally a gradient.
A pseudo-Riemannian manifold is said to be spacelike Jordan IP if the Jordan normal form of the skew-symmetric curvature operator depends upon the point of the manifold, but not upon the particular spacelike 2-plane in the tangent bundle at that point. We use methods of algebraic topology to classify connected spacelike Jordan IP pseudo-Riemannian manifolds of signature $(p,q)$, where $q\ge 11$, $p\le \frac{q-6}{4}$ and where the set $\{q, . . ., q+p\}$ does not contain a power of 2.

We give a complete classification, up to isometric isomorphism and scaling, of $4$-dimensional metric Lie algebras $(\mathfrak{g},\langle \cdot,\cdot \rangle)$ that admit a non-zero parallel skew-symmetric endomorphism. In particular, we distinguish those metric Lie algebras that admit such an endomorphism which is not a multiple of a complex structure, and for each of them we obtain the de Rham decomposition of the associated simply connected Lie group with the corresponding left invariant metric. On the other hand, we find that the associated simply connected Lie group is irreducible as a Ri…
It is considered a differentiable manifold equipped with a pseudo-Riemannian metric and an almost contact 3-struc\-ture so that an almost contact metric structure and two almost contact B-metric structures are generated. There are introduced the so-called associated Nijenhuis tensors for the studied structures. It is given a geometric interpretation of the vanishing of these tensors as a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of linear connections with totally skew-symmetric torsions preserving the structure. An example of a 7-dimensional manifold with connections of the consider…
Killing forms on Riemannian manifolds are differential forms whose covariant derivative is totally skew--symmetric. We show that a compact simply connected symmetric space carries a non--parallel Killing $p$--form ($p\ge2$) if and only if it isometric to a Riemannian product $S^k\times N$, where $S^k$ is a round sphere and $k>p$.
This paper is devoted to the systematic investigation of the cone construction for Riemannian $G$ manifolds M, endowed with an invariant metric connection with skew torsion $\nabla^c$, a `characteristic connection'. We show how to define a $\bar G$ structure on the cone $\bar M=M\x \R^+$ with a cone metric, and we prove that a Killing spinor with torsion on $M$ induces a spinor on $\bar M$ that is parallel w.\,r.\,t. the characteristic connection of the $\bar G$ structure. We establish the explicit correspondence between classes of metric almost contact structures on $M$ and almost hermitian c…
Connections with (skew-symmetric) torsion on non-symmetric Riemannian manifold satisfying the Einstein metricity condition (NGT with torsion) are considered. It is shown that an almost Hermitian manifold is an NGT with torsion if and only if it is a Nearly Kähler manifold. In the case of an almost contact metric manifold the NGT with torsion spaces are characterized and a possibly new class of almost contact metric manifolds is extracted. Similar considerations lead to a definition of a particular classes of almost para-Hermitian and almost paracontact metric manifolds. The conditions are give…
We present a new method for classifying naturally reductive homogeneous spaces -- i.\,e.~homogeneous Riemannian manifolds admitting a metric connection with skew torsion that has parallel torsion \emph{and} curvature. This method is based on a deeper understanding of the holonomy algebra of connections with parallel skew torsion on Riemannian manifolds and the interplay of such a connection with the geometric structure on the given Riemannian manifold. It allows to reproduce by easier arguments the known classifications in dimensions $3,4$, and $5$, and yields as a new result the classificatio…
We study the types of non-integrable $\mathrm{G}$-structures on Riemannian manifolds. In particular, geometric types admitting a connection with totally skew-symmetric torsion are characterized. 8-dimensional manifolds equipped with a $\Spin(7)$-structure play a special role. Any geometry of that type admits a unique connection with totally skew-symmetric torsion. Under weak conditions on the structure group we prove that this geometry is the only one with this property. Finally, we discuss the automorphism group of a Riemannian manifold with a fixed non-integrable $\mathrm{G}$-structure.
In this paper, we give a new lower bound for the eigenvalues of the Dirac operator on a compact spin manifold. This estimate is motivated by the fact that in its limiting case a skew-symmetric tensor (see Equation \eqref{eq:16}) appears that can be identified geometrically with the O'Neill tensor of a Riemannian flow, carrying a transversal parallel spinor. The Heisenberg group which is a fibration over the torus is an example of this case. Sasakian manifolds are also considered as particular examples of Riemannian flows. Finally, we characterize the 3-dimensional case by a solution of the Dir…
We exhibit Walker manifolds of signature (2,2) with various commutativity properties for the Ricci operator, the skew-symmetric curvature operator, and the Jacobi operator. If the Walker metric is a Riemannian extension of an underlying affine structure A, these properties are related to the Ricci tensor of A.
Killing forms on Riemannian manifolds are differential forms whose covariant derivative is totally skew-symmetric. We show that on a compact manifold with holonomy G2 or Spin7 any Killing form has to be parallel. The main tool is a universal Weitzenboeck formula. We show how such a formula can be obtained for any given holonomy group and any representation defining a vector bundle.
We investigate curvature properties of 3-$(α,δ)$-Sasaki manifolds, a special class of almost 3-contact metric manifolds generalizing 3-Sasaki manifolds (corresponding to $α= δ= 1$) that admit a canonical metric connection with skew torsion and define a Riemannian submersion over a quaternionic Kähler manifold with vanishing, positive or negative scalar curvature, according to $δ= 0$, $αδ> 0$ or $αδ< 0$. We shall investigate both the Riemannian curvature and the curvature of the canonical connection, with particular focus on their curvature operators, regarded as symmetric endomorphisms of the …
This paper is devoted to the first systematic investigation of manifolds that are Einstein for a connection with skew symmetric torsion. We derive the Einstein equation from a variational principle and prove that, for parallel torsion, any Einstein manifold with skew torsion has constant scalar curvature; and if it is complete of positive scalar curvature, it is necessarily compact and it has finite first fundamental group. The longest part of the paper is devoted to the systematic construction of large families of examples. We discuss when a Riemannian Einstein manifold can be Einstein with s…
We study 5-dimensional Riemannian manifolds that admit an almost contact metric structure. We classify these structures by their intrinsic torsion and review the literature in terms of this scheme. Moreover, we determine necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of metric connections with vectorial, totally skew-symmetric or traceless cyclic torsion that are compatible with the almost contact metric structure. Finally, we examine explicit examples of almost contact metric 5-manifolds from this perspective.
