We show that mean curvature flow of a compact submanifold in a complete Riemannian manifold cannot form singularity at time infinity if the ambient Riemannian manifold has bounded geometry and satisfies certain curvature and volume growth conditions .
We first give a precise statement on the short time existence of the Calabi flow and prove a stability result: any metric near a constant scalar curvature metric will flow to this cscK metric exponentially fast. Secondly, we prove that a compactness theorem in space of the kahler metrics given unifrom Ricci bound and potential bound. As an application, we prove the Calabi flow can be extended once Ricci curvature stays uniformly bounded. Lastly, we prove a removing-sigularity result about a weak constant scalar curveture metric in a punctured ball. One of the main difficulties is that the metr…
Using polar convex bodies and the $C_0$-bounds from Guan and Ni \cite{PL}, we obtain a uniform lower bound on the Gauss curvature of the normalized solution of the Gauss curvature flow without using Chow's Harnack inequality \cite{Ch2}.
In [7], Guan, Ren and Wang obtained a $C^2$ a priori estimate for admissible 2-convex hypersurfaces satisfying the Weingarten curvature equation $σ_2(κ(X))=f(X, ν(X)).$ In this note, we give a simpler proof of this result, and extend it to space forms.
We study strictly positive solutions to the critical Laplace equation \[ - Δu = n(n-2) u^{\frac{n+2}{n-2}}, \] decaying at most like $d(o, x)^{-(n-2)/2}$, on complete noncompact manifolds $(M, g)$ with nonnegative Ricci curvature, of dimension $n \geq 3$. We prove that, under an additional mild assumption on the volume growth, such a solution does not exist, unless $(M, g)$ is isometric to $\mathbb{R}^n$ and $u$ is a Talenti function. The method employs an elementary analysis of a suitable function defined along the level sets of $u$.
In this note, we use Warren-Yuan's super isoperimetric inequality on the level sets of subharmonic functions, which is available only in two dimensions, to derive a modified Hessian bound for solutions of the two dimensional Lagrangian mean curvature equation. We assume the Lagrangian phase to be supercritical with bounded second derivatives. Unlike the previous approach, the simplified approach in this proof does not require the Michael-Simon mean value and Sobolev inequalities on generalized submanifolds of $\mathbb{R}^n$.
This note provides an alternative proof of a result of Labourie. We show that the two complements of the convex core of a three dimensional quasi-fuchsian hyperbolic manifold may be foliated by embedded hypersurfaces of constant Gaussian curvature.
We show that closed starshaped hypersurfaces of space forms with almost constant mean curvature or almost constant higher order mean curvature are closed to geodesic spheres.
These notes arose from a mini lecture series the author gave at the Early Career Researchers Workshop on Geometric Analysis and PDEs, held in January 2020 at the Matrix institute of the University of Melbourne. We discussed some classical aspects of expanding curvature flows and obtained first applications. In these notes we will give a detailed account on what was covered during the lectures.
It was proved that the fundamental group of the space of harmonic polynomials of degree $n(n \geq 2)$, with the same Gaussian curvature is not trivial. Furthermore, we give an example of topologically nonequivalent conjugate harmonic functions having the same Gaussian curvature.
In this paper, we study the curvature estimate of the Hermitian-Yang-Mills flow on holomorphic vector bundles. In one simple case, we show that the curvature of the evolved Hermitian metric is uniformly bounded away from the analytic subvariety determined by the Harder-Narasimhan-Seshadri filtration of the holomorphic vector bundle.
We demonstrate that the property of being Alexandrov immersed is preserved along mean curvature flow. Furthermore, we demonstrate that mean curvature flow techniques for mean convex embedded flows such as noncollapsing and gradient estimates also hold in this setting. We also indicate the necessary modifications to the work of Brendle--Huisken to allow for mean curvature flow with surgery for the Alexandrov immersed, $2$-dimensional setting.
This note derives parametrizations for surfaces of revolution that satisfy an affine-linear relation between their respective curvature radii. Alongside, parametrizations for the uniform normal offsets of those surfaces are obtained. Those parametrizations are found explicitly for a countably-infinite many of them, and of those, it is shown which are algebraic. Lastly, for those surfaces which have a constant ratio of principal curvatures, parametrizations with a constant angle between the parameter curves are found.
The purpose of these notes is to provide an introduction to those who want to learn more about translating solitons for the mean curvature flow in $\mathbb{R}^3$, particularly those which are complete graphs over domains in $\mathbb{R}^2$. In this paper we describe a full classification of complete translating graphs in $\mathbb{R}^3$.
We study the evolution of the Whitney sphere along the Lagrangian mean curvature flow. We show that equivariant Lagrangian spheres in $\mathbb{C}^n$ satisfying mild geometric assumptions collapse to a point in finite time and the tangent flows converge to a Lagrangian plane with multiplicity two.
We prove that any smooth Riemannian manifold of non-negative scalar curvature and with a strictly mean convex and compact boundary component can be (C^2) extended beyond the component to have non-negative scalar curvature and to enjoy anyone of the following three types of (new) boundary: strictly convex, totally geodesic or strictly concave. The extension procedure can be applied for instance to "positive mass" type of theorems.
The following result is proved: Consider a 4-dimensional Kaehler manifold M with nonvanishing Bochner tensor B. Then any holomorphic transformation of M, which preserves B is a homothety.
We construct complete Riemannian metrics to show that the total space of tangent bundles of orientable closed surfaces (except torus) admits complete uniformly PSC-metrics. It gives a partial positive answer to one of Gromov's question.
We show that any effective isometric torus action of maximal rank on a compact Riemannian manifold with positive (sectional) curvature and maximal symmetry rank, that is, on a positively curved sphere, lens space, complex or real projective space, is equivariantaly diffeomorphic to a linear action. We show that a compact, simply connected Riemannian 4- or 5-manifold of quasipositive curvature and maximal symmetry rank must be diffeomorphic to the 4-sphere, complex projective plane or the 5-sphere.
In this note we prove a simple relation between the mean curvature form, symplectic area, and the Maslov class of a Lagrangian immersion in a Kähler-Einstein manifold. An immediate consequence is that in Kähler-Einstein manifolds with positive scalar curvature, minimal Lagrangian immersions are monotone.
In this note we prove the following result: There is a positive constant $ε(n,Λ)$ such that if $M^n$ is a simply connected compact K$\ddot{a}$hler manifold with sectional curvature bounded from above by $Λ$, diameter bounded from above by 1, and with holomorphic bisectional curvature $H \geq -ε(n,Λ)$, then $M^n$ is diffeomorphic to the product $M_1\times ... \times M_k$, where each $M_i$ is either a complex projective space or an irreducible K$\ddot{a}$hler-Hermitian symmetric space of rank $\geq 2$. This resolves a conjecture of F. Fang under the additional upper bound restrictions on section…
For any semi-Riemannian manifold (M,g) we define some generalized curvature tensor as a linear combination of Kulkarni-Nomizu products formed by the metric tensor, the Ricci tensor and its square of given manifold. That tensor is closely related to quasi-Einstein spaces, Roter spaces and some Roter type spaces.
We give a short proof of the following fact. Let $Σ$ be a connected, finitely connected, noncompact manifold without boundary. If $g$ is a complete Riemannian metric on $Σ$ whose Gaussian curvature $K$ is nonnegative at infinity, then $K$ must be integrable. In particular, we obtain a new short proof of the fact that if $Σ$ admits a complete metric whose Gaussian curvature is nonnegative and positive at one point, then $Σ$ is diffeomorphic to $\mathbb{R}^2$.
We investigate strong maximum (and minimum) principles for fully nonlinear second order equations on Riemannian manifolds that are non-totally degenerate and satisfy appropriate scaling conditions. Our results apply to a large class of nonlinear operators, among which Pucci's extremal operators, some singular operators like those modeled on the $p$- and $\infty$-Laplacian, and mean curvature type problems. As a byproduct, we establish new strong comparison principles for some second order uniformly elliptic problems when the manifold has nonnegative sectional curvature.
An $(α,β)$-metric is defined by a Riemannian metric and $1$-form. In this paper, we investigate the known characterization for $(α,β)$-metrics of isotropic S-curvature. We show that such a characterization should hold in dimension $n\ge 3$, and for the 2-dimensional case, there is one more class of isotropic S-curvature than the higher dimensional ones. Further, we construct corresponding examples for every two-dimensional class, especially for the class that the norm of $β$ with respect to $α$ is not a constant.
In this paper, we focus on the moduli space of Seiberg-Witten equation on non-compact manifold with periodic end. Suppose that the scalar curvature on the periodic end is identically zero and the topological conditions: the first de-Rham cohomology and the self-dual cohomology restricting on the periodic end vanish. Then, we will show that the moduli space of the perturbed Seiberg-Witten equation is compact.
The entropy of a hypersurface is given by the supremum over all F-functionals with varying centers and scales, and is invariant under rigid motions and dilations. As a consequence of Huisken's monotonicity formula, entropy is non-increasing under mean curvature flow. We show here that a compact mean convex hypersurface with some low entropy is diffeomorphic to a round sphere. We will also prove that a smooth self-shrinker with low entropy is exact a hyperplane.
We study new heat kernel estimates for the Neumann heat kernel on a compact manifold with positive Ricci curvature and convex boundary. As a consequence, we obtain new lower bounds for the Neumann eigenvalues which are consistent with Weyl's asymptotics.
In this note we announce results on the mean curvature flow of mean convex sets in 3-dimensions. Loosely speaking, our results justify the naive picture of mean curvature flow where the only singularities are neck pinches, and components which collapse to asymptotically round spheres.
We will give a simple proof that the metric of any compact Yamabe gradient soliton (M,g) is a metric of constant scalar curvature when the dimension of the manifold n>2.
We show that for any solution to the Kähler-Ricci flow with positive bisectional curvature on a compact Kähler manifold $M^n$, the bisectional curvature has a uniform positive lower bound. As a consequence, the solution converges exponentially fast to an Kähler-Einstein metric with positive bisectional curvature as t tends to the infinity, provided we assume the Futaki-invariant of $M^n$ is zero. This improves a result of D. Phong, J. Song, J. Sturm and B. Weinkove in which they assumed the stronger condition that Mabuchi K-energy is bounded from below.
The main purpose of this short note is to point out that the negative gradient flow for the prescribed $\mathbf Q$-curvature problem on $S^n$ can be extended to handle the case that the $\mathbf Q$-curvature candidate $f$ may change signs.
We classify the triples $H \subset K \subset G$ of nested compact Lie groups which satisfy the "positive triple" condition that was shown by the second author to ensure that $G/H$ admits a metric with quasi-positive curvature. A few new examples of spaces that admit quasi-positively curved metrics emerge from this classification; namely, a $\CP^2$-bundle over $S^6$, a $B^7$-bundle over $\HP^2$, a $\CP^{2n-1}$-bundle over $\HP^{n}$ for each $n\geq 2$, and a family of finite quotients of $T^1S^6$.
It is a fundamental open problem for the mean curvature flow, and in fact for many partial differential equations, whether or not all blowup limits are selfsimilar. In this short note, we prove that for the mean curvature flow of mean convex surfaces all limit flows are selfsimilar (static, shrinking or translating) if and only if there are only finitely many spherical singularities. More generally, using the solution of the mean convex neighborhood conjecture for neck singularities, we establish a local version of this equivalence for neck singularities in arbitrary dimension. In particular, …
In this note, we study Q-curvature flow on $S^4$ with indefinite nonlinearity. Our result is that the prescribed Q-curvature problem on $S^4$ has a solution provided the prescribed Q-curvature $f$ has its positive part, which possesses non-degenerate critical points such that $Δ_{S^4} f\not=0$ at the saddle points and an extra condition such as a nontrivial degree counting condition.
In [8] Gerhardt proves longtime existence for the inverse mean curvature flow in globally hyperbolic Lorentzian manifolds with compact Cauchy hypersurface, which satisfy three main structural assumptions: a strong volume decay condition, a mean curvature barrier condition and the timelike convergence condition. Furthermore, it is shown in [8] that the leaves of the inverse mean curvature flow provide a foliation of the future of the initial hypersurface. We show that this result persists, if we generalize the setting by leaving the mean curvature barrier assumption out. For initial hypersurfac…
Sub-Riemannian structures on odd-dimensional spheres respecting the Hopf fibration naturally appear in quantum mechanics. We study the curvature maps for such a sub-Riemannian structure and express them using the Riemannian curvature tensor of the Fubini-Study metric of the complex projective space and the curvature form of the Hopf fibration. We also estimate the number of conjugate points of a sub-Riemannian extremal in terms of the bounds of the sectional curvature and the curvature form. It presents a typical example for the study of curvature maps and comparison theorms for a general cora…
In this note, we study the curvature flow to Nirenberg problem on $S^2$ with non-negative nonlinearity. This flow was introduced by Brendle and Struwe. Our result is that the Nirenberg problems has a solution provided the prescribed non-negative Gaussian curvature $f$ has its positive part, which possesses non-degenerate critical points such that $Δ_{S^2} f>0$ at the saddle points.
In this note we investigate the behaviour at finite-time singularities of the mean curvature flow of compact Riemannian submanifolds M^m_t\hookrightarrow (N^{m+n}, h). We show that they are characterized by the blow-up of a trace A = H \cdot II of the square of the second fundamental form.
Recently Andrews and Bryan [3] discovered a comparison function which allows them to shorten the classical proof of the well-known fact that the curve shortening flow shrinks embedded closed curves in the plane to a round point. Using this comparison function they estimate the length of any chord from below in terms of the arc length between its endpoints and elapsed time. They apply this estimate to short segments and deduce directly that the maximum curvature decays exponentially to the curvature of a circle with the same length. We consider the expansion of convex curves under inverse (mean…
Applying a well known result for attracting fixed points of biholomorphisms \cite{RR, V}, we observe that one immediately obtains the following result: if $(M^n,g)$ is a complete non-compact gradient Kähler-Ricci soliton which is either steady with positive Ricci curvature so that the scalar curvature attains its maximum at some point, or expanding with non-negative Ricci curvature, then $M$ is biholomorphic to $\ce ^n$.
