This note provides an alternative proof of a result of Labourie. We show that the two complements of the convex core of a three dimensional quasi-fuchsian hyperbolic manifold may be foliated by embedded hypersurfaces of constant Gaussian curvature.
We give an easy example showing that sections of a singular Riemannian foliation on a simply connected space neither have to be isometric nor injectively immersed.
In this paper we generalize the basic Lichnerowicz cohomology on transversally locally conformally Kählerian foliations and we study its relation with basic Bott-Chern cohomology and $0$--th basic Dolbeault cohomology with values in the associated foliated weight bundle.
In this note we give a characterization of taut Riemannian foliations using the transverse divergence. This result turns out to be a convenient tool in the case of some standard examples. Furthermore, we show that a classical tautness result of Haefliger can be obtained in our particular setting as a straightforward consequence. In the final part of the paper we obtain a tautness characterization for transversally oriented foliations with dense leaves and investigate the case of a submanifold of lower dimension which is closed and orthogonal to the leaves.
In this note we study a new cohomology attached to a function along the leaves of complex foliations. We also explain how this cohomology depends on the function and we study a relative cohomology and a Mayer-Vietoris sequence related to this cohomology.
In this short note, we study the injectivity radius bound for three dimensional complete and non-compact Riemannian manifold with good leaf foliations and with bounded curvature up to first order. We obtain the injectivity bound by using the minimal surface theory and the Gauss-Bonnet theorem.
In these survey lectures, we investigate the geometric and analytic properties of transverse Dirac operators. In particular, we define a transverse Dirac operator associated to a distribution that is essentially self-adjoint (Prokhorenkov-R result). We describe the Habib-R Theorem showing that the invariance of the spectrum of a basic Dirac operator on a Riemannian foliation. The Bruening-Kamber-R theorems give Atiyah-Singer type formulas for the equivariant index of transversally elliptic operators on G-manifolds and the index of basic Dirac operators on Riemannian foliations. These notes con…
The boundary at infinity of a quasifuchsian hyperbolic manifold is equiped with a holomorphic quadratic differential. Its horizontal measured foliation $f$ can be interpreted as the natural analog of the measured bending lamination on the boundary of the convex core. This analogy leads to a number of questions. We provide a variation formula for the renormalized volume in terms of the extremal length $\ext(f)$ of $f$, and an upper bound on $\ext(f)$. We then describe two extensions of the holomorphic quadratic differential at infinity, both valid in higher dimensions. One is in terms of Poinca…
In this note, we discuss the interactions between differential topology and isoparametric foliations, surveying some recent progress and open problems.
These notes are the basis of a course given at the Institut Henri Poincare in September 2014. We survey some recent results related to the geometric analysis of hypoelliptic diffusion operators on totally geodesic Riemannian foliations. We also give new applications to the study of hypocoercive estimates for Kolmogorov type operators.
In this paper, we prove the invariance of the spectrum of the basic Dirac operator defined on a Riemannian foliation $(M,\mathcal{F})$ with respect to a change of bundle-like metric. We then establish new estimates for its eigenvalues on spin flows in terms of the O'Neill tensor and the first eigenvalue of the Dirac operator on $M$. We discuss examples and also define a new version of the basic Laplacian whose spectrum does not depend on the choice of bundle-like metric.
In this Note we establish a relation between sections in globally generated holomorphic vector bundles on Kähler manifolds, isotropic with respect to a non-degenerate quadratic form, and totally geodesic foliations on Euclidean open domains. We find a geometric condition for a totally geodesic foliation to originate in a holomorphic vector bundle. For codimension-two foliations, this description recovers of P. Baird and J. C. Wood. The universal objects that play a key role are the orthogonal Grassmannians.
We characterize biharmonic anti-invariant surfaces in $3$-dimensional generalized $(κ, μ)$-manifolds with non-zero constant mean curvature by means of the scalar curvature of the ambient space and the mean curvature. In addition, we give a method for constructing infinity many examples of biharmonic submanifolds in a certain $3$-dimensional generalized $(κ, μ)$-manifold. Moreover, we determine $3$-dimensional generalized $(κ, μ)$-manifolds which admit a certain kind of proper biharmonic foliation.
In this note we study constant mean curvature surfaces in asymptotically flat 3-manifolds. We prove that, in an asymptotically flat 3-manifold with positive mass, stable spheres of given constant mean curvature outside a fixed compact subset are unique. Therefore we are able to conclude that there is a unique foliation of stable spheres of constant mean curvature in an asymptotically flat 3-manifold with positive mass.
It is conjectured that there are no Riemannian foliations on compact manifold of negative curvature by Gromoll-Walschap in \cite{DG}. In this note we give a positive answer.
In [8] Gerhardt proves longtime existence for the inverse mean curvature flow in globally hyperbolic Lorentzian manifolds with compact Cauchy hypersurface, which satisfy three main structural assumptions: a strong volume decay condition, a mean curvature barrier condition and the timelike convergence condition. Furthermore, it is shown in [8] that the leaves of the inverse mean curvature flow provide a foliation of the future of the initial hypersurface. We show that this result persists, if we generalize the setting by leaving the mean curvature barrier assumption out. For initial hypersurfac…
In this note we construct an explicit example of a (compact) conformally flat Riemannian manifold which admits a totally geodesic foliation of codimension one with no isoparametric leaves. This answers negatively the question: is every hypersurface with constant principal curvatures isoparametric?
We briefly review a few aspects of the development of differential geometry which may be considered as being influenced by Einstein's general relativity. We focus on how Einstein's quest for a complete geometrization of matter and electromagnetism gave rise to an enormous amount of theoretical work both on physics and mathematics. In connection with this we also bring to light how recent investigation on theoretical physics has led to new results on some branches of modern differential geometry.
