In this paper, we investigate the mean curvature flow of compact surfaces in $4$-dimensional space forms. We prove the convergence theorems for the mean curvature flow under certain pinching conditions involving the normal curvature, which generalise Baker-Nguyen's convergence theorem.
In this paper, we prove that expanding gradient Ricci solitons with (positively) pinched Ricci curvature are trivial ones. Namely, they are either compact or flat.
We make rigorous an old idea of using mean curvature flow to prove a theorem of Richard Hamilton on the compactness of proper hypersurfaces with pinched, bounded curvature.
There is a conjecture that a complete Riemannian 3-manifold with bounded sectional curvature, and pointwise pinched nonnegative Ricci curvature, must be flat or compact. We show that this is true when the negative part (if any) of the sectional curvature decays quadratically.
We prove that codimension two surfaces satisfying a nonlinear curvature condition depending on normal curvature are smoothly deformed by mean curvature flow to round points.
We prove that any $n$--dimensional complete gradient Ricci soliton with pinched Weyl curvature is a finite quotient of $\RR^{n}$, $\RR \times \SS^{n-1}$ or $\SS^{n}$. In particular, we do not need to assume the metric to be locally conformally flat.
In this paper, we obtain classification of four-dimensional Einstein manifolds with positive Ricci curvature and pinched sectional curvature. In particular, the first result concerns with an upper bound of sectional curvature, improving a theorem of E. Costa. The second is a generalization of D. Yang's result assuming an upper bound on the difference between sectional curvatures.
We say that a nonnegatively curved manifold $(M,g)$ has quarter pinched flag curvature if for any two planes which intersect in a line the ratio of their sectional curvature is bounded above by 4. We show that these manifolds have nonnegative complex sectional curvature. By combining with a theorem of Brendle and Schoen it follows that any positively curved manifold with strictly quarter pinched flag curvature must be a space form. This in turn generalizes a result of Andrews and Nguyen in dimension 4. For odd dimensional manifolds we obtain results for the case that the flag curvature is pinc…
In this paper, we prove that a critical metric of the volume functional with pinched Weyl curvature is isometric to a geodesic ball in $\mathbb{S}^{n}.$ Moreover, we provide a necessary and sufficient condition on the norm of the gradient of the potential function in order to classify such critical metrics.
In a previous paper, we proved a number of optimal rigidity results for Riemannian manifolds of dimension greater than four whose curvature satisfy an integral pinching. In this article, we use the same integral Bochner technique to extend the results in dimension three. Then, by using the classification of closed three-manifolds with nonnegative scalar curvature and a few topological considerations, we deduce optimal sphere theorems for three-dimensional manifolds with integral pinched curvature.
We show that the blow-ups of compact solutions to the mean curvature flow in $\mathbb{R}^N$ initially satisfying the pinching condition $|A|^2 < c |H|^2$ for a suitable constant $c = c(n)$ must be codimension one.
For a convex domain $D$ bounded by the hypersurface $\partial D$ in a space of constant curvature we give sharp bounds on the width $R-r$ of a spherical shell with radii $R$ and $r$ that can enclose $\partial D$, provided that normal curvatures of $\partial D$ are pinched by two positive constants. Furthermore, in the Euclidean case we also present sharp estimates for the quotient $R/r$. From the obtained estimates we derive stability results for almost umbilical hypersurfaces in the constant curvature spaces.
In this paper, we prove that any $κ$-noncollapsed gradient steady Ricci soliton with nonnegative curvature operator and horizontally $ε$-pinched Ricci curvature must be rotationally symmetric. As an application, we show that any $κ$-noncollapsed gradient steady Ricci soliton $(M^n, g,f)$ with nonnegative curvature operator must be rotationally symmetric if it admits a unique equilibrium point and its scalar curvature $R(x)$ satisfies $\lim_{r(x)\rightarrow\infty}R(x)f(x)=C_0\sup_{x\in M}R(x)$ with $C_0>\frac{n-2}{2}$.
We establish a nice orthonormal frame field on a closed surface minimally immersed in a unit sphere $S^{n}$, under which the shape operators take very simple forms. Using this frame field, we obtain an interesting property $K+K^{N}=1$ for the Gauss curvature $K$ and the normal curvature $K^{N}$ if the Gauss curvature is positive. Moreover, using this property we obtain the pinching on the intrinsic curvature and normal curvature, the pinching on the normal curvature, respectively.
We consider a complete noncompact Riemannian manifold M and give conditions on a compact submanifold K of M so that the outward normal exponential map off of the boundary of K is a diffeomorphism onto M\K. We use this to compactify M and show that pinched negative sectional curvature outside K implies M has a compactification with a well defined Hölder structure independent of K. The Hölder constant depends on the ratio of the curvature pinching. This extends and generalizes a 1985 result of Anderson and Schoen.
We give an estimate of the first eigenvalue of the Laplace operator on a complete noncompact stable minimal hypersurface $M$ in a complete simply connected Riemannian manifold with pinched negative sectional curvature. In the same ambient space, we prove that if a complete minimal hypersurface $M$ has sufficiently small total scalar curvature then $M$ has only one end. We also obtain a vanishing theorem for $L^2$ harmonic 1-forms on minimal hypersurfaces in a Riemannian manifold with sectional curvature bounded below by a negative constant. Moreover we provide sufficient conditions for a minim…
We show that every one-harmonic map, in the sense of Trapani and Valli, from a Hadamard surface of pinched negative curvature to $\mathbb{H}^2$ has image the interior of the convex hull of a subset of $\partial_\infty\mathbb{H}^2$. The proof relies on Minkowski geometry, by interpreting one-harmonic maps as the Gauss maps of convex surfaces.
A Riemannian manifold $M$ has higher hyperbolic rank if every geodesic has a perpendicular Jacobi field making sectional curvature -1 with the geodesic. If in addition, the sectional curvatures of $M$ lie in the interval $[-1,-\frac14]$, and $M$ is closed, we show that $M$ is a locally symmetric space of rank one. This partially extends work by Constantine using completely different methods. It is also a partial converse to Hamenstädt's hyperbolic rank rigidity result for sectional curvatures $\leq -1$, and complements well-known results on Euclidean and spherical rank rigidity.
We study solutions of high codimension mean curvature flow defined for all negative times, usually referred to as ancient solutions. We show that any compact ancient solution whose second fundamental form satisfies a certain natural pinching condition must be a family of shrinking spheres. Andrews and Baker have shown that initial submanifolds satisfying this pinching condition, which generalises the notion of convexity, converge to round points under the flow. As an application, we use our result to simplify their proof.
We consider the evolution by mean curvature flow of Lagrangian submanifolds of the complex projective space CP^n. We prove that, if the initial value satisfies a suitable pinching condition, then the flow exists for all times and the manifold converges to a totally geodesic submanifold. As a corollary, we obtain that a Lagrangian submanifold satisfying our pinching condition is diffeomorphic to a real projective space.
We consider the evolution by mean curvature flow of a closed submanifold of the complex projective space. We show that, if the submanifold has small codimension and satisfies a suitable pinching condition on the second fundamental form, then the evolution has two possible behaviors: either the submanifold shrinks to a round point in finite time, or it converges smoothly to a totally geodesic limit in infinite time. The latter behavior is only possible if the dimension is even. These results generalize previous works by Huisken and Baker on the mean curvature flow of submanifolds of the sphere.
G. Pipoli and C. Sinestrari considered the mean curvature flow starting from a closed submanifold in the complex projective space. They proved that if the submanifold is of small codimension and satisfies a suitable pinching condition for the second fundamental form, then the flow has two possible behaviors: either the submanifold collapses to a round point in finite time, or it converges smoothly to a totally geodesic submanifold in infinite time. In this paper, we prove the similar results for the mean curvature flow starting from pinched closed submanifolds in (general) rank one symmetric s…
In this paper, we study closed four-dimensional manifolds. In particular, we show that under various new pinching curvature conditions (for example, the sectional curvature is no more than 5/6 of the smallest Ricci eigenvalue) then the manifold is definite. If restricting to a metric with harmonic Weyl tensor, then it must be self-dual or anti-self-dual under the same conditions. Similarly, if restricting to an Einstein metric, then it must be either the complex projective space with its Fubini-Study metric, the round sphere or their quotients. Furthermore, we also classify Einstein manifolds …
We investigate the evolution of closed strictly convex hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, n=3, for contracting normal velocities, including powers of the mean curvature, of the norm of the second fundamental form, and of the Gauss curvature. We prove convergence to a round point for 2-pinched initial hypersurfaces. In $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, n=2, natural quantities exist for proving convergence to a round point for many normal velocities. Here we present their counterparts for arbitrary dimensions $n\in\mathbb{N}$.
Let (M,g_0) be a compact Riemannian manifold with pointwise 1/4-pinched sectional curvatures. We show that the Ricci flow deforms g_0 to a constant curvature metric. The proof uses the fact, also established in this paper, that positive isotropic curvature is preserved by the Ricci flow in all dimensions. We also rely on earlier work of Hamilton and of Bohm and Wilking.
We consider ancient solutions to the mean curvature flow in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ ($n \geq 3$) that are weakly convex, uniformly two-convex, and satisfy derivative estimates $|\nabla A| \leq γ_1 |H|^2, |\nabla^2 A| \leq γ_2 |H|^3$. We show that such solutions are noncollapsed. As an application, in arbitrary codimension, we consider compact $n$-dimensional ($n \geq 5$) solutions to the mean curvature flow in $\mathbb{R}^N$ that satisfy the pinching condition $|H| > 0$ and $|A|^2 < c(n) |H|^2$, $c(n) = \min\{\frac{1}{n-2}, \frac{3(n+1)}{2n(n+2)}\}$. We conclude that any blow-up model at the first …
We study the asymptotic Dirichlet problem for $\mathcal{A}$-harmonic functions on a Cartan-Hadamard manifold whose radial sectional curvatures outside a compact set satisfy an upper bound $$ K(P)\le - \frac{1+\varepsilon}{r(x)^2 \log r(x)} $$ and a pointwise pinching condition $$ |K(P)|\le C_K |K(P')| $$ for some constants $\varepsilon>0$ and $C_K\ge 1$, where $P$ and $P'$ are any 2-dimensional subspaces of $T_xM$ containing the (radial) vector $\nabla r(x)$ and $r(x)=d(o,x)$ is the distance to a fixed point $o\in M$. We solve the asymptotic Dirichlet problem with any continuous boundary data …
We prove the central limit theorem of random variables induced by distances to Brownian paths and Green functions on the universal cover of Riemannian manifolds of finite volume with pinched negative curvature. We further provide some ergodic properties of Brownian motions and an application of the central limit theorem to the dynamics of geodesic flows in pinched negative curvature.
Generalizing results due to Brady and Farb we prove the existence of a bilipschitz embedded manifold of pinched negative curvature and dimension m_1+m_2-1 in the product X:=X_1^{m_1} times X_2^{m_2} of two Hadamard manifolds X_i^{m_i} of dimension m_i with pinched negative curvature. Combining this result with a Theorem by Buyalo and Schroeder we prove the additivity of the hyperbolic rank for products of manifolds with pinched negative curvature.
We prove that a $n$-dimensional, $4 \leq n \leq 6$, compact gradient shrinking Ricci soliton satisfying a $L^{n/2}$-pinching condition is isometric to a quotient of the round $\mathbb{S}^{n}$. The proof relies mainly on sharp algebraic curvature estimates, the Yamabe-Sobolev inequality and an improved rigidity result for integral pinched Einstein metrics.
Let (X,g) be a metrically complete, simply connected Riemannian manifold with bounded geometry and pinched negative curvature, i.e. there are constants a>b>0 such that -a^2<K<-b^2 for all sectional curvatures K. Here bounded geometry is used in the sense that all covariant derivatives of the Riemannian curvature tensor are bounded and the injectivity radius is uniformly bounded below by a positive constant. We show that there are no superexponentially decaying eigenfunctions of the Laplacian of g. We also show the analogous conclusion for other geometric operators, and prove a theorem with the…
In this paper we prove that, under an explicit integral pinching assumption between the $L^2$-norm of the Ricci curvature and the $L^2$-norm of the scalar curvature, a closed 3-manifold with positive scalar curvature admits an Einstein metric with positive curvature. In particular this implies that the manifold is diffeomorphic to a quotient of ${\Bbb S}^3$.
We investigate the geometry and topology of submanifolds under a sharp pinching condition involving extrinsic invariants like the mean curvature and the length of the second fundamental form. Several homology vanishing results are given. Moreover, an integral bound is provided for the Bochner operator of compact Euclidean submanifolds in terms of the Betti numbers.
We prove that compact Kähler manifolds whose sectional curvatures are close to 1/4-pinched have ratios of Chern numbers close to the corresponding ratios of a complex hyperbolic space form. We deduce that the Mostow-Siu surfaces (and their three-dimensional analogues constructed by the first author) do not admit Kähler metrics with pinching close to 1/4.
We study mean curvature flow in $\mathbb S_K^{n+1}$, the round sphere of sectional curvature $K>0$, under the quadratic curvature pinching condition $|A|^{2} < \frac{1}{n-2} H^{2} + 4 K$ when $n\ge 4$ and $|A|^{2} < \frac{3}{5}H^{2}+\frac{8}{3}K$ when $n=3$. This condition is related to a famous theorem of Simons, which states that the only minimal hypersurfaces satisfying $\vert A\vert^2<nK$ are the totally geodesic hyperspheres. It is related to but distinct from two-convexity. Notably, in contrast to two-convexity, it allows the mean curvature to change sign. We show that the pinching condi…
We study mean curvature flow of $n$-dimensional submanifolds of $S_K^{n+\ell}$, the round $(n+\ell)$-sphere of sectional curvature $K>0$, under the quadratic curvature pinching condition $|A|^{2} < \frac{1}{n-2}|H|^{2} + 4K$ when $n\geq 8$, $|A|^{2} < \frac{4}{3n}|H|^{2}+\frac{n}{2}K$ when $n=7$, and $|A|^2<\frac{3(n+1)}{2n(n+2)}|H|^2+\frac{2n(n-1)}{3(n+1)}K$ when $n=5$ or $6$. This condition is related to a theorem of Li and Li [Arch. Math., 58:582--594, 1992] which states that the only $n$-dimensional minimal submanifolds of $S_K^{n+\ell}$ satisfying $|A|^2<\frac{2n}{3}K$ are the totally geo…
