Skew loops and quadric surfaces

Central cross-sections make surfaces of revolution quadric

We prove here that when all planes transverse and nearly perpendicular to the axis of a surface of revolution intersect it in loops having central symmetry, the surface must be quadric. It follows that the quadrics are the only surfaces of revolution without skewloops. Similar statements hold for hypersurfaces of revolution in higher dimensions.

Skew-symmetric complex matrices, pure spinors, the twistor space of the conformal $2n$-sphere, and the Fano variety of linear $n$-folds of a non-singular complex quadric hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}^{2n+1}$

For $n \geq 1$, the twistor space $\mathfrak{Z}(\mathbb{S}^{2n})$ of the conformal $2n$-sphere is biholomorphic to the Zariski closure, taken in the complex Grassmannian manifold $\mathbf{G}(n+1, 2n+2)$, of the set of graphs of skew-symmetric linear endomorphism of $\mathbb{C}^{n+1}$. We use this fact to describe a natural stratification of the twistor space $\mathfrak{Z}(\mathbb{S}^{2n})$ with $n \geq 3$, in terms of what we have called {\it generalised complex orthogonal Stiefel manifolds} of $\mathbb{C}^{n+1}$. On skew loops, skew branes and quadratic hypersurfaces

A skew brane is an immersed codimension 2 submanifold in affine space, free from pairs of parallel tangent spaces. Using Morse theory, we prove that a skew brane cannot lie on a quadratic hypersurface. We also prove that there are no skew loops on embedded ruled developable discs in 3-space. The paper extends recent work by M. Ghomi and B. Solomon.

Skew loops in flat tori

We produce skew loops -- loops having no pair of parallel tangent lines -- homotopic to any loop in a flat torus or other quotient of R^n. The interesting case here is n=3. More subtly for any n, we characterize the homotopy classes that will contain a skew loop having a specified loop in the unit sphere as tangent indicatrix.
