We link regularity and smoothness analysis of multivariate vector subdivision schemes with network flow theory and with special linear optimization problems. This connection allows us to prove the existence of what we call optimal difference masks that posses crucial properties unifying the regularity analysis of univariate and multivariate subdivision schemes. We also provide efficient optimization algorithms for construction of such optimal masks. Integrality of the corresponding optimal values leads to purely analytic proofs of $C^k-$regularity of subdivision.
The algebraic characterization of dual univariate interpolating subdivision schemes is investigated. Specifically, we provide a constructive approach for finding dual univariate interpolating subdivision schemes based on the solutions of certain associated polynomial equations. The proposed approach also makes possible to identify conditions for the existence of the sought schemes.

Many applications of geometry modeling and computer graphics necessite accurate curvature estimations of curves on the plane or on manifolds. In this paper, we define the notion of the discrete geodesic curvature of a geodesic polygon on a smooth surface. We show that, when a geodesic polygon P is closely inscribed on a $C^2$-regular curve, the discrete geodesic curvature of P estimates the geodesic curvature of C. This result allows us to evaluate the geodesic curvature of discrete curves on surfaces. In particular, we apply such result to planar and spherical 4-point angle-based subdivision …
This paper provides a strategy to analyse the convergence of nonlinear analogues of linear subdivision processes on the sphere. In contrast to previous work, we study the Riemannian analogue of a linear scheme on a Riemannian manifold with positive sectional curvature. Our result can be applied to all general subdivision schemes without any sign restriction on the mask.
We consider geometric Hermite subdivision for planar curves, i.e., iteratively refining an input polygon with additional tangent or normal vector information sitting in the vertices. The building block for the (nonlinear) subdivision schemes we propose is based on clothoidal averaging, i.e., averaging w.r.t. locally interpolating clothoids, which are curves of linear curvature. To define clothoidal averaging, we derive a new strategy to approximate Hermite interpolating clothoids. We employ the proposed approach to define the geometric Hermite analogues of the well-known Lane-Riesenfeld and fo…

This paper discusses the generation of multivariate $C^\infty$ functions with compact small supports by subdivision schemes. Following the construction of such a univariate function, called \emph{Up-function}, by a non-stationary scheme based on masks of {spline subdivision schemes} of growing degrees, we term the multivariate functions we generate Up-like functions. We generate them by non-stationary schemes based on masks of box-splines of growing supports. To analyze the convergence and smoothness of these non-stationary schemes, we develop new tools which apply to a wider class of schemes …
A new class of univariate stationary interpolatory subdivision schemes of dual type is presented. As opposed to classical primal interpolatory schemes, these new schemes have masks with an even number of elements and are not step-wise interpolants. A complete algebraic characterization, which covers every arity, is given in terms of identities of trigonometric polynomials associated to the schemes. This characterization is based on a necessary condition for refinable functions to have prescribed values at the nodes of a uniform lattice, as a consequence of the Poisson summation formula. A stra…
Harten's Multiresolution framework has been applied in different contexts, such as in the numerical simulation of PDE with conservation laws or in image compression, showing its flexibility to describe and manipulate the data in a multilevel fashion. Two basic operators form the basis of this theory: the decimation and the prediction. The decimation is chosen first and determines the type of data that is being manipulated. For instance, the data could be the point evaluations or the cell-averages of a function, which are the two classical environments. Next, the prediction is chosen, and it mu…
In this paper we present a factorization framework for Hermite subdivision schemes refining function values and first derivatives, which satisfy a spectral condition of high order. In particular we show that spectral order $d$ allows for $d$ factorizations of the subdivision operator with respect to the Gregory operators: A new sequence of operators we define using Stirling numbers and Gregory coefficients. We further prove that the $d$-th factorization provides a ``convergence from contractivity'' method for showing $C^d$-convergence of the associated Hermite subdivision scheme. The power of …
