We show here that the morphological pathway of spontaneous dewetting of ultrathin Ag films on SiO2 under nanosecond laser melting is found to be film thickness dependent. For films with thickness h between 2 <= h <= 9.5 nm, the morphology during the intermediate stages of dewetting consisted of bicontinuous structures. For films 11.5 <= h <= 20 nm, the intermediate stages consisted of regularly-sized holes. Measurement of the characteristic length scales for different stages of dewetting as a function of film thickness showed a systematic increase, which is consistent with the spinodal dewetting instability over the entire thickness range investigated. This change in morphology with thickness is consistent with observations made previously for polymer films [A. Sharma et al, Phys. Rev. Lett., v81, pp3463 (1998); R. Seemann et al, J. Phys. Cond. Matt., v13, pp4925, (2001)]. Based on the behavior of free energy curvature that incorporates intermolecular forces, we have estimated the morphological transition thickness for the intermolecular forces for Ag on SiO2 . The theory predictions agree well with observations for Ag. These results show that it is possible to form a variety of complex Ag nanomorphologies in a consistent manner, which could be useful in optical applications of Ag surfaces, such as in surface enhanced Raman sensing.
The surface evolution model based on geometric partial differential equation is used to numerically study the kinetics of dewetting and dynamic morphologies for the localized pinhole defect in the surface of the ultrathin solid film with the strongly anisotropic surface energy. Depending on parameters such as the initial depth and width of the pinole, the strength of the attractive substrate potential and the strength of the surface energy anisotropy, the pinhole may either extend to the substrate and thus rupture the film, or evolve to the quasiequilibrium shape while the rest of the film sur…
The fluid dynamics of the classical dewetting instability in ultrathin films is a non-linear process. However, the physical manifestation of the instability in terms of characteristic length and time scales can be described by a linearized form of the initial conditions of the films's dynamics. Alternately, the thermodynamic approach based on equating the rate of free energy decrease to the viscous dissipation [de Gennes, C. R. Acad. Paris.v298, 1984] can give similar information. Here we have evaluated dewetting in the presence of thermocapillary forces arising from a film-thickness (h) depen…
An evolution partial differential equation for the surface of a non-wetting single-crystal film in an attractive substrate potential is derived and used to study the dynamics of a pinhole for the varying initial depth of a pinhole and the strengths of the potential and the surface energy anisotropy. The results of the simulations demonstrate how the corresponding parameters may lead to complete or partial dewetting of the film. Anisotropy of the surface energy, through faceting of the pinhole walls, is found to most drastically affect the time to film rupture. In particular, the similations su…
The dewetting dynamics of an ultrathin film is studied in the presence of evaporation - or reaction - of adatoms on the substrate. KMC simulations are in good agreement with an analytical model with diffusion, rim facetting, and substrate sublimation. As sublimation is increased, we find a transition from the usual dewetting regime where the front slows down with time, to a sublimation-controlled regime where the front velocity is approximately constant. The rim width exhibits an unexpected non-monotonous behavior, with a maximum in time.
A mathematical model is developed to analyze the growth/decay rate of surface perturbations of an ultrathin metal film on an amorphous substrate (SiO_{2}). The formulation combines the approach of Mullins [J. Appl. Phys. v30, 77, 1959] for bulk substrates, in which curvature-driven mass transport and surface deformation can occur by surface/volume diffusion and evaporation-condensation processes, with that of Spencer et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. v67, 26, 1991] to describe solid state transport in thin films under epitaxial strain. The model is applied to study the relative rate of solid state mass…
We have observed nanopattern formation with robust and controllable spatial ordering by laser-induced dewetting in nanoscopic metal films. Pattern evolution in Co film of thickness 1\leq h\leq8 nm on SiO_{2} was achieved under multiple pulse irradiation using a 9 ns pulse laser. Dewetting leads to the formation of cellular patterns which evolve into polygons that eventually break up into nanoparticles with monomodal size distribution and short range ordering in nearest-neighbour spacing R. Spatial ordering was attributed to a hydrodynamic thin film instability and resulted in a predictable var…
Everyday experience confirms the tendency of adhesive films to detach from spheroidal regions of rigid substrates -- what is a petty frustration when placing a sticky bandage onto an elbow or knee is a more serious matter in the coating and painting industries. Irrespective of their resistance to bending, a key driver of such phenomena is Gauss' \textit{Theorema Egregium}, which implies that naturally flat sheets cannot conform to doubly-curved surfaces without developing a strain whose magnitude grows sharply with the curved area. Previous attempts to characterize the onset of curvature-induc…
Hydrodynamic pattern formation (PF) and dewetting resulting from pulsed laser induced melting of nanoscopic metal films have been used to create spatially ordered metal nanoparticle arrays with monomodal size distribution on SiO_{\text{2}}/Si substrates. PF was investigated for film thickness h\leq7 nm < laser absorption depth \sim11 nm and different sets of laser parameters, including energy density E and the irradiation time, as measured by the number of pulses n. PF was only observed to occur for E\geq E_{m}, where E_{m} denotes the h-dependent threshold energy required to melt the film. Ev…
The thickness evolution of in-plane magnetization reversal in ultrathin films is studied with a theoretical model that takes account of surface roughness typical of epitaxial growth. Guided by Néel's model, step edge sites of monolayer-height islands are assigned a two-fold anisotropy in addition to a four-fold anisotropy at all sites. Coercivity is found to depend essentially on both the film thickness and the partial coverage of the topmost layer. Its qualitative features are determined primarily by sample geometry and the size of the step anisotropy compared to the domain wall energy. Magne…
The magnetoconductive properties of ultrathin Pb films deposited on Si(111) are measured and compared with density-functional electronic band-structure calculations on two-dimensional, free-standing, 1 to 8 monolayers thick Pb(111) slabs. A description with free-standing slabs is possible because it turned out that the Hall coefficient is independent of the substrate and of the crystalline order in the film. We show that the oscillations in sign of the Hall coefficient observed as a function of film thickness can be explained directly from the thickness dependent variations of the electronic b…
Stability of thin lubricating fluid coated slippery surfaces depends on the surface energy of the underlying solid surface. High energy solid surfaces, coated with thin lubricating oil, lead to the dewetting of the oil films upon depositing aqueous drops on it. The total surface energy, which is due to the long range and short range interactions, also predict the instability of thin lubricating films under the given condition. In this article, we present experimental study of dewetting of thin lubricating oil films sandwiched between hydrophilic solid surface and aqueous drops. Fluorescence im…
We study the ferroelectric stability and surface structural properties of an oxygen-terminated hexagonal YMnO$_3$ ultra-thin film using density functional theory. Under an open circuit boundary condition, the ferroelectric state with the spontaneous polarization normal to the (0001) surface, is found to be metastable in a single domain state despite the presence of a depolarizing field. We establish a connection between the result and the role of improper ferroelectric transition. Our results imply that improper ferroelectric ultrathin films can have rather unique properties that are distincti…
Ultrathin films of the itinerant ferromagnet SrRuO$_3$ were studied using transport and magnto-optic polar Kerr effect. We find that below 4 monolayers the films become insulating and their magnetic character changes as they loose their simple ferromagnetic behavior. We observe a strong reduction in the magnetic moment which for 3 monolayers and below lies in the plane of the film. Exchange-bias behavior is observed below the critical thickness, and may point to induced antiferromagnetism in contact with ferromagnetic regions.
The electronic and magnetic properties in ABO3 perovskite oxides are extremely sensitive to lattice structure but also the dimensionality, such as the thickness in thin film form. Here, we report the thickness-dependent electro-magnetic properties of ultrathin epitaxially stabilized Sr1-xBaxRuO3 (x = 0.08, 0.2) thin films on SrTiO3 (001) substrate. The results reveal that the Ba-doping (0.08 < x < 0.20) reduces RuO6 orthorhombic distortions existing in SrRuO3 and induces a tetragonal distortion as evidenced by out-of-plane lattice expansion. A metal-to-insulator transition, accompanied by a fe…
Spectra of the differential tunneling conductivity for ultrathin lead films grown on Si(111)7x7 single crystals with a thickness from 9 to 50 monolayers have been studied by low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. The presence of local maxima of the tunneling conductivity is typical for such systems. The energies of maxima of the differential conductivity are determined by the spectrum of quantum-confined states of electrons in a metallic layer and, consequently, the local thickness of the layer. It has been shown that features of the microstructure of substrates, such …
Competition between electronic and atomic reconstruction is a constantly recurring theme in transition-metal oxides. We use density functional theory calculations to study this competition for a model system consisting of a thin film of the polar, infinite-layer structure ACuO2 (A=Ca, Sr, Ba) grown on a nonpolar, perovskite SrTiO3 substrate. A transition from the bulk planar structure to a chain-type thin film accompanied by substantial changes to the electronic structure is predicted for a SrCuO2 film fewer than five unit cells thick. An analytical model explains why atomic reconstruction bec…
We present a synchrotron grazing incidence x-ray diffraction analysis of the domain structure and polar symmetry of highly strained BiFeO3 thin films grown on LaAlO3 substrate. We revealed the existence of periodic elastic nanodomains in the pure tetragonal-like BFO ultrathin films down to a thickness of 6 nm. A unique shear strain accommodation mechanism is disclosed. We further demonstrated that the periodicity of the nanodomains increases with film thickness but deviates from the classical Kittel's square root law in ultrathin thickness regime (6 - 30 nm). Temperature-dependent experiments …
In this work we are investigating the effect of strain in ultrathin Mn-Ga thin films on the magnetic properties at room temperature. Two different Mn-Ga compositions of which one is furthermore doped with Co were grown on Cr buffered MgO (001) substrates. Films with a thickness below 12nm are highly strained and it was observed that the ratio c/a vs. thickness is depending on composition. Using c/a as an order parameter the PMA is shown to be drastically reduced with increasing strain. These findings should be considered when generalizing and downscaling results obtained from films >20nm. Furt…
Spin waves in perpendicularly-magnetized Pt/Co/AlO$_x$/Pt ultrathin films with varying Co thicknesses (0.6-1.2 nm) have been studied with Brillouin light spectroscopy in the Damon-Eshbach geometry. The measurements reveal a pronounced nonreciprocal propagation, which increases with decreasing Co thicknesses. This nonreciprocity is attributed to an interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), which is significantly stronger than asymmetries resulting from surface anisotropies for such modes. Results are consistent with an interfacial DMI constant $D_s = -1.7 \pm 0.11$ pJ/m, which favors…
We report bcc-like crystal structures in 2-4 ML Fe films grown on fcc Cu(100) using scanning tunneling microscopy. The local bcc structure provides a straightforward explanation for their frequently reported outstanding magnetic properties, i.e., ferromagnetic ordering in all layers with a Curie temperature above 300 K. The non-pseudomorphic structure, which becomes pseudomorphic above 4 ML film thickness is unexpected in terms of conventional rules of thin film growth and stresses the importance of finite thickness effects in ferromagnetic ultrathin films.
The evolution of tetragonality with thickness has been probed in epitaxial c-axis oriented PbTiO3 films with thicknesses ranging from 500 down to 24 Angstroms. High resolution x-ray pointed out a systematic decrease of the c-axis lattice parameter with decreasing film thickness below 200 Angstroms. Using a first-principles model Hamiltonian approach, the decrease in tetragonality is related to a reduction of the polarization attributed to the presence of a residual unscreened depolarizing field. It is shown that films below 50 Angstroms display a significantly reduced polarization but still re…
We propose a model for the description of the transport properties of metallic films on a large scale of slab thickness. This model is based on solving the linearized Boltzmann equation in relaxation-time approximation using {\it ab initio} calculations within the framework of the density functional theory. The expression for the relaxation time is derived from the microscopic treatment of the scattering processes and provides the correct thickness dependence for very thin as well as very thick films. The method is applied to the calculation of the in-plane conductivity and the Drude-type plas…
We present the observation of strain induced sign reversal of anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) in LCMO (LCMO) ultrathin films (thickness 4 nm) deposited on STO (001) substrate (STO). We have also observed unusually large AMR in LCMO/STO thin films with thickness of 6 nm below but close to its Curie temperature (TC) which decrease as the film thickness increases. The sign reversal of AMR (with a maximum value of - 6) with magnetic field or temperature for the 4 nm thin film may be attributed to the increase in tensile strain in the plane of the thin film which in turn facilitates the rotatio…
Graphene is attractive for spintronics due to its long spin life time and high mobility. So far only thick and polycrystalline slabs have been used as ferromagnetic electrodes. We report the growth of flat, epitaxial ultrathin Co films on graphene. These display perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in the thickness range 0.5-1nm, which is confirmed by theory. PMA, epitaxy and ultrathin thickness bring new perspectives for graphene-based spintronic devices such as the zero-field control of an arbitrary magnetization direction, band matching between electrodes and graphene, and interface effects su…
We report the epitaxial growth of PdTe$_2$ ultrathin films on topological insulator Bi$_2$Se$_3$. A prominent Moiré pattern was observed in STM measurements. The Moiré periodicity increases as film thickness decreases, indicating a lattice expansion of epitaxial PdTe$_2$ thin films with lower thicknesses. In addition, our simulations based on Moiré Metrology reveal uniaxial lattice strains at the edge of PdTe$_2$ domains, and anisotropic strain distributions throughout the Moiré supercell with a net change in lattice strain up to ~2.9%. Our DFT calculations show that this strain effect leads t…
Ultrathin freestanding membranes with a pronounced metal-insulator transition (MIT) provides huge potential in future flexible electronic applications as well as a unique aspect of the study of lattice-electron interplay. However, the reduction of the thickness to an ultrathin region (a few nm) is typically detrimental to the MIT in epitaxial films, and even catastrophic for their freestanding form. Here, we report an enhanced MIT in VO2-based freestanding membranes, with a lateral size up to millimetres and VO2 thickness down to 5 nm. The VO2-membranes were detached by dissolving a Sr3Al2O6 s…
Thickness-dependence of coercive field (EC) was investigated in ultrathin BaTiO3 capacitors with thicknesses (d) between 30 and 5 nm. The EC appears nearly independent of d below 15 nm, and decreases slowly as d increases above 15 nm. This behavior cannot be explained by extrinsic effects, such as interfacial passive layers or strain relaxation, nor by homogeneous domain models. Based on domain nuclei formation model, the observed EC behavior is explainable via a quantitative level. A crossover of domain shape from a half-prolate spheroid to a cylinder is also suggested at d~ 15 nm, exhibiting…
Through ${in~situ}$ photoemission spectroscopy, we investigated the change in the electronic and crystal structures of dimensionality-controlled VO$_2$ films coherently grown on TiO$_2$(001) substrates. In the nanostructured films, the balance between the instabilities of a bandlike Peierls transition and a Mott transition is controlled as a function of thickness. The characteristic spectral change associated with temperature-driven metal-insulator transition in VO$_2$ thick films holds down to 1.5 nm (roughly corresponding to five V atoms along the [001] direction), whereas VO$_2$ films of le…
The structural and magnetic properties of ultrathin FeO(111) films on Pt(111) with thicknesses from 1 to 16 monolayers (ML) were studied using the nuclear inelastic scattering (NIS) of synchrotron radiation. Distinct evolution of vibrational characteristics with thickness that is revealed in the phonon density of states (PDOS) witnesses a textbook transition from 2D to 3D lattice dynamics. For the thinnest films of 1 and 2 ML, the low energy part of the PDOS followed a linear dependence in energy that is characteristic for 2-dimensional systems. This dependence gradually transforms with thickn…
Metal-insulator transition is observed in the La0.8Sr0.2MnO3 thin films with thickness larger than 5 unit cells. Insulating phase at lower temperature appeared in the ultrathin films with thickness ranging from 6 unit cells to 10 unit cells and it is found that the Mott variable range hopping conduction dominates in this insulating phase at low temperature with a decrease of localization length in thinner films. A deficiency of oxygen content and a resulted decrease of the Mn valence have been observed in the ultrathin films with thickness smaller than or equal to 10 unit cells by studying the…
The charge-carrier transport properties of ultrathin metallic films are analysed with ab-initio methods using the density functional theory (DFT) on free-standing single crystalline slabs in the thickness range between 1 and 8 monolayers and compared with experiments for Pb films on Si(111). A strong interplay between bandstructure, quantised in the direction normal to the ultrathin film, charge-carrier scattering mechanisms and magnetoconduction was found. Based on the bandstructure obtained from the DFT, we used standard Boltzmann transport theory in two dimensions to obtain results for the …
We present a detailed study of the ground-state magnetic structure of ultrathin Fe films on the surface of fcc Ir(001). We use the spin-cluster expansion technique in combination with the relativistic disordered local moment scheme to obtain parameters of spin models and then determine the favored magnetic structure of the system by means of a mean field approach and atomistic spin dynamics simulations. For the case of a single monolayer of Fe we find that layer relaxations very strongly influence the ground-state spin configurations, whereas Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions and biquadr…
In quantum matters hosting electron-electron correlation and spin-orbit coupling, spatial inhomogeneities, arising from competing ground states, can be essential for determining and understanding topological properties. A prominent example is Hall anomalies observed in SrRuO3 films, which were interpreted in terms of either magnetic skyrmion-induced topological Hall effect (THE) or inhomogeneous anomalous Hall effect (AHE). To clarify this ambiguity, we systematically investigated the AHE of SrRuO3 ultrathin films with controllable inhomogeneities in film thickness (tSRO). By harnessing the st…
Magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) magnetometry is one of the most widely employed techniques for the characterization of ferromagnetic thin-film samples. Some information, such as coercive fields or anisotropy strengths can be obtained without any knowledge of the optical and magneto-optical (MO) properties of the material. On the other hand, a quantitative analysis, which requires a precise knowledge of the material's index of refraction n and the MO coupling constants K and G is often desirable, for instance for the comparison of samples, which are different with respect to ferromagnetic la…
Interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (iDMI) has been investigated in Co2FeAl (CFA) ultrathin films of various thicknesses (0.8 nm<tCFA<2 nm) grown on Si substrates, using Pt, W, Ir and MgO buffer or/and capping layers. Vibrating sample magnetometry revealed that magnetization at saturation (Ms) for the Pt and Ir buffered films is higher than the usual Ms of CFA due to the proximity induced magnetization (PIM) in Ir and Pt, estimated to be 19% and 27%, respectively. The presence of PIM in these materials is confirmed using x-ray resonant magnetic reflectivity. Moreover, while no PIM is…
Thickness scaling of ferroelectricity in AlScN is a determining factor for its potential application in neuromorphic computing and memory devices. In this letter, we report on ultrathin (10 nm) Al0.72Sc0.28N films that are ferroelectrically switchable at room temperature. All-epitaxial Al0.72Sc0.28N/Pt heterostructures are grown by magnetron sputtering onto GaN/sapphire substrates followed by an in situ Pt capping approach to avoid oxidation of the Al0.72Sc0.28N film surface. Structural characterization by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy reveals the established epitaxy. …
In this paper, a method is presented to create and characterize mechanically robust, free standing, ultrathin, oxide films with controlled, nanometer-scale thickness using Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) on graphene. Aluminum oxide films were deposited onto suspended graphene membranes using ALD. Subsequent etching of the graphene left pure aluminum oxide films only a few atoms in thickness. A pressurized blister test was used to determine that these ultrathin films have a Young's modulus of 154 \pm 13 GPa. This Young's modulus is comparable to much thicker alumina ALD films. This behavior indic…
Density of the polyacrylamide ultrathin films has been studied using X-ray reflectivity technique. Two sources (one powder and another aqueous solution) of polyacrylamide were used to prepare spin coated films on silicon substrate. Light scattering measurements show that the polymer chains were unentangled in a concentrated (4 mg/ml) as well as in a dilute (2 mg/ml) solution prepared from the powder, whereas the solution (4 mg/ml) prepared by diluting the solution source shows entangled chain morphology. Three sets of films of different thicknesses were prepared using the three solutions by sp…
We report on systematic ab-initio investigations of Co and Cr interlayers embedded in Fe(001)/MgO/Fe(001) magnetic tunnel junctions, focusing on the changes of the electronic structure and the transport properties with interlayer thickness. The results of spin-dependent ballistic transport calculations reveal options to specifically manipulate the tunnel magnetoresistance ratio. The resistance area products and the tunnel magnetoresistance ratios show a monotonous trend with distinct oscillations as a function of the Cr thickness. These modulations are directly addressed and interpreted by mea…
The ground-state polarization of PbTiO3 thin films is studied using a microscopic effective Hamiltonian with parameters obtained from first-principles calculations. Under short-circuit electrical boundary conditions, (001) films with thickness as low as three unit cells are found to have a perpendicularly polarized ferroelectric ground state with significant enhancement of the polarization at the surface.
Structural, electronic and dielectric properties of high-quality ultrathin BaTiO3 films are investigated. The films, which are grown by ozone-assisted molecular beam epitaxy on Nb-doped SrTiO3 (001) substrates and having thicknesses as thin 8 unit cells (3.2 nm), are unreconstructed and atomically smooth with large crystalline terraces. A strain-driven transition to 3D island formation is observed for films of of 13 unit cells thickness (5.2 nm). The high structural quality of the surfaces, together with the dielectric properties similar to bulk BaTiO3 and dominantly TiO2 surface termination, …
Ferromagnetism was observed in a Pt(100) ultrathin film deposited on a SrTiO3(100) substrate. The ferromagnetism, which appears in films with thicknesses of 2.2-4.4 nm, periodically changes with a period of approximately 1 nm (5-6 monolayers) depending on the film thickness. This is consistent with the period derived from the quantum-well states formed in the thin film. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements show the evidence of appearance of intrinsic ferromagnetism in Pt(100) ultra-thin film. In addition, present results suggest a possibility that the orbital magnetic moment of pure …
Well-ordered ultrathin films of NiO have been prepared on an Ag(001) substrate using molecular beam epitaxy. With the help of angle-resolved two-photon photoemission (2PPE) a series of image potential states (IPS) for film thicknesses of 2--4 monolayers (ML) has been identified. By time-resolved 2PPE, the lifetimes of the first three IPS and their dependence on the oxide film thickness have been determined. While the lifetimes of the (n=1) IPS are all in the range of 27--42 fs, the values for the (n=2) IPS decrease from 85 fs for 2 ML to 33 fs for 4 ML. These differences are discussed in terms…
Perovskite ferroelectric oxides are usually considered to be brittle materials, however, recent work [Dong et al., Science 366, 475 (2019)] demonstrated the super-elasticity in the freestanding BaTiO3 thin films. This property may originate from the ferroelectric domain evolution during the bending, which is difficult to observe in experiments. Therefore, understanding the relation among the bending deformation, thickness of the films, and the domain dynamics is critical for their potential applications in flexible ferroelectric devices. Here, we reported the dynamics of ferroelectric polariza…
NiFe$_2$O$_4$ thin films with varying thickness were grown on SrTiO$_3$(001) by reactive molecular beam epitaxy. Soft and hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements reveal a homogeneous cation distribution throughout the whole film with stoichiometric Ni:Fe ratios of 1:2 independent of the film thickness. Low energy electron diffraction and high resolution (grazing incidence) x-ray diffraction in addition to x-ray reflectivity experiments were conducted to obtain information of the film surface and bulk structure, respectively. For ultrathin films up to 7.3 nm, lateral tensile and vert…
Sub-10 nm continuous metal films are promising candidates for flexible and transparent nanophotonics and optoelectronics applications. In this Letter, we demonstrate that monolayer MoS2 is a perspective adhesion layer for the deposition of continuous conductive gold films with a thickness of only 3-4 nm. Optical properties of continuous ultrathin gold films deposited on two-dimensional MoS2 grown by chemical vapor deposition are investigated by spectroscopic ellipsometry over a wide wavelength range (300-3300 nm). Results show that optical losses in ultrathin films increase with decreasing thi…
We show that it is possible to deposit, by mechanical exfoliation on SiO2/Si wafers, atomically thin mica flakes down to a single monolayer thickness. The optical contrast of these mica flakes on top of a SiO2/Si substrate, which depends on their thickness, the illumination wavelength and the SiO2 substrate thickness, can be quantitatively accounted for by a Fresnel law based model. The preparation of atomically thin insulating crystalline sheets will enable the fabrication of ultrathin defect-free insulating substrates, dielectric barriers or planar electron tunneling junctions. Additionally,…
Epitaxial Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 thin films were prepared on Nb-doped SrTiO3 (100)substrates by the pulsed laser deposition technique, and were studied by measuring the Ti 2p - 3d resonant photoemission spectra in the valence-band region as a function of film thickness, both at room temperature and low temperature. Our results demonstrated an abrupt variation in the spectral structures between 2.8 nm (~7 monolayers) and 2.0 nm (~5 monolayers) Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 films, suggesting that there exists a critical thickness for phase change in the range of 2.0 nm to 2.8 nm. This may be ascribed mainly to the int…
We present room temperature ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) studies of polycrystalline ||Pt/10 nm Cu/t Co/10 nm Cu/Pt|| films as a function of Co layer thickness (1 < t < 10 nm) grown by evaporation and magnetron sputtering. FMR was studied with a high frequency broadband coplanar waveguide (up to 25 GHz) using a flip-chip method. The resonance field and the linewidth were measured as a function of the ferromagnetic layer thickness. The evaporated films exhibit a lower magnetization density (Ms = 1131 emu/cm^3) compared to the sputtered films (Ms= 1333 emu/cm^3), with practically equal perpendic…
We report electrically switchable polarization and ferroelectric domain scaling over a thickness range of 5-100 nm in BiFeO3 films deposited on [110] vicinal substrates. The BiFeO3 films of variable thickness were deposited with SrRuO3 bottom layer using pulsed laser deposition technique. These films have fractal domain patterns and the domain width scales closely with the square root of film thickness, in accordance with the Landau-Lifschitz-Kittel (LLK) law. The Switching Spectroscopy Piezo-response Force Microscopy provides clear evidence for the ferroelectric switching behavior in all the …
An analytical mean field approach for describing the time evolution of film growth by seeding has been developed. The modeling deals with the generic case of anisotropic growth with different growth rates, respectively on -- and normal to -- the substrate plane. The finite size of the seeds is considered by including spatial correlation effects among seeds through hard-core interactions. The approach, based on probability theory, provides solution in closed form for mean film thickness as a function of substrate coverage, seed density and initial size of the seeds. For negligible values of the…
