Spin waves in perpendicularly-magnetized Pt/Co/AlO$_x$/Pt ultrathin films with varying Co thicknesses (0.6-1.2 nm) have been studied with Brillouin light spectroscopy in the Damon-Eshbach geometry. The measurements reveal a pronounced nonreciprocal propagation, which increases with decreasing Co thicknesses. This nonreciprocity is attributed to an interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), which is significantly stronger than asymmetries resulting from surface anisotropies for such modes. Results are consistent with an interfacial DMI constant $D_s = -1.7 \pm 0.11$ pJ/m, which favors left-handed chiral spin structures. This suggests that such films below 1 nm in thickness should support novel chiral states like skyrmions.
A theory for the spin wave eigenmodes of a Dzyaloshinskii domain wall is presented. These walls are Néel-type domain walls that can appear in perpendicularly-magnetized ultrathin ferromagnets in the presence of a sizeable Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The mode frequencies for spin waves propagating parallel and perpendicular to the domain wall are computed using a continuum approximation. In contrast to Bloch-type walls, it is found that the spin wave potential associated with Dzyaloshinskii domain walls is not reflectionless, which leads to a finite scattering cross-section for interacti…
The determination of the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction for perpendicularly magnetized thin layered films is not trivial and therefore needs some experimental efforts to determine its sign and magnitude, especially in the exchange biased system. Here, we developed a method proposed by D.-S. Han et al. [Nano Lett. 16, (2016) 4438], which opens a way to investigate this interaction using a conventional PMOKE magnetometer, also in exchange biased systems. Using our approach we demonstrated that the Au/Co/NiO layered system has a strong negative Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, wh…
We study bubble domain wall dynamics using micromagnetic simulations in perpendicularly magnetized ultra-thin films with disorder and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Disorder is incorporated into the material as grains with randomly distributed sizes and varying exchange constant at the edges. As expected, magnetic bubbles expand asymmetrically along the axis of the in-plane field under the simultaneous application of out-of-plane and in-plane fields. Remarkably, the shape of the bubble has a ripple-like part which causes a kink-like (steep decrease) feature in the velocity versus in-plane …
We characterize asymmetric growth of magnetic bubble domains in perpendicularly magnetized Co/Ni multi-layers grown on Pt$_x$Ir$_{1-x}$ seedlayers by application of perpendicular and in-plane magnetic fields. Using a refined model of domain wall creep that incorporates contributions from the anisotropic elastic energy, $\varepsilon$, and a chirality-dependent prefactor, $v_0$, we elucidate factors that govern the mobility of Dzyaloshinskii domain walls as a function of seedlayer composition. The interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction magnitude is found to decrease monotonically with $x_…
Next-generation concepts for solid-state memory devices are based on current-driven domain wall propagation, where the wall velocity governs the device performance. It has been shown that the domain wall velocity and the direction of travel is controlled by the nature of the wall and its chirality. This chirality is attributed to effects emerging from the lack of inversion symmetry at the interface between a ferromagnet and a heavy metal, leading to an interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction that can control the shape and chirality of the magnetic domain wall. Here we present direct imag…
Spin-Hall oscillators are promising sources of spin-wave signals for magnonics applications, and can serve as building blocks for magnonic logic in ultralow power computation devices. Here, we analytically and micromagnetically study magnetization dynamics excited in a Spin-Hall oscillator with oblique magnetization when the spin-Hall effect and interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction act simultaneously. Our key results are (i) excitation of nonreciprocal spin-waves propagating perpendicularly to the in-plane projection of the static magnetization, (ii) skyrmions generation by pure spin-…
We present an analytical theory to describe three-dimensional magnetic textures in perpendicularly magnetized magnetic multilayers that arise in the presence of magnetostatic interactions and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). We demonstrate that domain walls in multilayers develop a complex twisted structure, which persists even for films with strong DMI. The origin of this twist is surface-volume stray field interactions that manifest as a depth-dependent effective field whose form mimics the DMI effective field. We find that the wall twist has a minor impact on the equilibrium sky…
We describe a field-driven domain wall creep-based method for the quantification of interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMI) in perpendicularly magnetized thin films. The use of only magnetic fields to drive wall motion removes the possibility of mixing with current-related effects such as spin Hall effect or Rashba field, as well as the complexity arising from lithographic patterning. We demonstrate this method on sputtered Pt/Co/Ir/Pt multilayers with a variable Ir layer thickness. By inserting an ultrathin layer of Ir at the Co/Pt interface we can reverse the sign of the effecti…
We study the effect of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) on current-induced magnetic switching of a perpendicularly magnetized heavy-metal/ferromagnet/oxide trilayer both experimentally and through micromagnetic simulations. We report the generation of stable helical magnetization stripes for a sufficiently large DMI strength in the switching region, giving rise to intermediate states in the magnetization confirming the essential role of the DMI on switching processes. We compare the simulation and experimental results to a macrospin model, showing the need for a micromagnetic approa…
We show that the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) can lead to a tilting of the domain wall (DW) surface in perpendicularly magnetized magnetic nanotracks when DW dynamics is driven by an easy axis magnetic field or a spin polarized current. The DW tilting affects the DW dynamics for large DMI and the tilting relaxation time can be very large as it scales with the square of the track width. The results are well explained by an analytical model based on a Lagrangian approach where the DMI and the DW tilting are included. We propose a simple way to estimate the DMI in a magnetic multilayer…
We have characterized the strength of the interfacial Dyzaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in ultrathin perpendicularly magnetized CoFeB/MgO films, grown on different underlayers of W, TaN, and Hf, using two experimental methods. First, we determined the effective DMI field from measurements of field-driven domain wall motion in the creep regime, where applied in-plane magnetic fields induce an anisotropy in the wall propagation that is correlated with the DMI strength. Second, Brillouin light spectroscopy was employed to quantify the frequency non-reciprocity of spin waves in the CoFeB lay…
The interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in multilayers of heavy metal and ferromagnetic metals enables the stabilization of novel chiral spin structures such as skyrmions. Magnetic insulators, on the other hand can exhibit enhanced dynamics and properties such as lower magnetic damping and therefore it is of interest to combine the properties enabled by interfacial DMI with insulating systems. Here, we demonstrate the presence of interfacial DMI in heterostructures that include insulating magnetic layers. We use a bilayer of perpendicularly magnetized insulating thulium iron ga…
We analyze the electric current and magnetic field driven domain wall motion in perpendicularly magnetized ultrathin ferromagnetic films in the presence of interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and both out-of-plane and in-plane uniaxial anisotropies. We obtain exact analytical Walker-type solutions in the form of one-dimensional domain walls moving with constant velocity due to both spin-transfer torques and out-of-plane magnetic field. These solutions are embedded into a larger family of propagating solutions found numerically. Within the considered model, we find the dependencies of…
It has been shown previously that the presence of a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in perpendicularly magnetized thin films stabilizes Néel type domain walls. We demonstrate, using micromagnetic simulations and analytical modeling, that the presence of a uniaxial in-plane magnetic anisotropy can also lead to the formation of Néel walls in the absence of a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. It is possible to abruptly switch between Bloch and Néel walls via a small modulation of both the in-plane, but also the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. This opens up a route towards electric field con…
We studied electric field modification of magnetic properties in a Pt/Co/AlO$_x$ trilayer via magneto-optical Kerr microscopy. We observed the spontaneous formation of labyrinthine magnetic domain structure due to thermally activated domain nucleation and propagation under zero applied magnetic field. A variation of the period of the labyrinthine structure under electric field is observed as well as saturation magnetization and magnetic anisotropy variations. Using an analytical formula of the stripe equilibrium width we estimate the variation of the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interacti…
Using a Magnetic Resonance Force Microscope, we compare the ferromagnetic resonance spectra of individual micron-size disks with identical diameter, 1 $m$m, but different layer structures. For a disk composed of a single 43.3 nm thick permalloy (Py) layer, the lowest energy mode in the perpendicular configuration is the uniform precession. The higher energy modes are standing spin-waves confined along the diameter of the disk. For a Cu(30)/Py(100)/Cu(30) nm multilayer structure, it has been interpreted that the lowest energy mode becomes a precession localized at the Cu/Py interfaces. When the…
Using symmetry analysis and density functional theory calculations, we uncover the nature of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ monolayer. We show that while such an interaction might result in small distortion of the magnetic texture on the short range, on the longrange Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction favors in-plane Néel spin-spirals along equivalent directions of the crystal structure. Whereas our results show that the observed Néel skyrmions cannot be explained by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction at the monolayer level, they suggest that canted magnetic texture shal…
We have carried out measurements of domain wall dynamics in a Pt/Co/GdOx(t) wedge sample with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. When driven by an easy-axis field Hz in the presence of an in-plane field Hx, the domain wall expansion along x is anisotropic, as expected for samples presenting Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. In the creep regime, the sign and the value of the domain wall velocity asymmetry changes along the wedge. We show that in our samples the domain wall speed vs. Hx curves in the creep regime cannot be explained simply in terms of the variation of the domain wall energy wit…
Ultrathin metallic ferromagnets on substrates with strong spin-orbit coupling can exhibit induced chiral interactions of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) form. For systems with perpendicular anisotropy, the presence of DM interactions has important consequences for current-driven domain-wall motion and underpins possible spintronic applications involving skyrmions. We show theoretically how spin textures driven by the DM interaction allow nonreciprocal channeling of spin waves, leading to measurable features in magnetic wires, dots, and domain walls. Our results provide methods for detecting ind…
Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction even if their wave functions lack direct overlap. Theory predicts that spin-orbit scattering leads to a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya type enhancement of this indirect exchange interaction, giving rise to chiral exchange terms. Here we present a combined spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy, angle-resolved photoemission, and density functional theory study of MnO$_2$ chains on Ir(100). Whereas we find antiferromagnetic Mn--Mn coupling along the chain, the inter-chain coupling across the non-magnetic Ir substrate turns out to be chiral with a $120^{\cir…
Magnetic skyrmions are topologically protected spin textures, stabilised in systems with strong Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). Several studies have shown that electrical currents can move skyrmions efficiently through spin-orbit torques. While promising for technological applications, current-driven skyrmion motion is intrinsically collective and accompanied by undesired heating effects. Here we demonstrate a new approach to control individual skyrmion positions precisely, which relies on the magnetic interaction between sample and a magnetic force microscopy (MFM) probe. We investig…
We study the spin orbit torque (SOT) and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in the dual-interfaced Co-Ni perpendicular multilayers. Through the combination of top and bottom layer materials (Pt, Ta, MgO and Cu), SOT and DMI are efficiently manipulated due to an enhancement or cancellation of the top and bottom contributions. However, SOT is found to originate mostly from the bulk of a heavy metal (HM), while DMI is more of interfacial origin. In addition, we find that the direction of the domain wall (DW) motion can be either along or against the electron flow depending on the DW tilting …
We have used Brillouin Light Scattering spectroscopy to independently determine the in-plane Magneto-Crystalline Anisotropy and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction (DMI) in out-of-plane magnetized Au/Co/W(110). We found that the DMI strength is 2-3 times larger along the bcc$[\bar{1}10]$ than along the bcc$[001]$ direction. We use analytical considerations to illustrate the relationship between the crystal symmetry of the stack and the anisotropy of microscopic DMI. Such an anisotropic DMI is the first step to realize isolated elliptical skyrmions or anti-skyrmions in thin film systems with …
The static magnetic and dynamic properties of the compound (NH3)2(CH2)3CoCl4 are investigated in the temperature interval 0.5-50 K. It is shown that at TN =2.05 K this compound undergoes a transition to a magnetically ordered antiferromagnet state. A distinctive feature of this compound is the presence of temperature hysteresis at the transition to the ordered state (corresponding to a first order magnetic phase transition) and of a spontaneous magnetic moment along the x axis. The paramagnetic Curie temperatures are determined. The frequency-field curves of the AFMR spectrum in the xy plane a…
Topologically protected magnetic structures such as skyrmions and domain walls (DWs) have drawn a great deal of attention recently due to their thermal stability and potential for manipulation by spin current, which is the result of chiral magnetic configurations induced by the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction (DMI). Designing devices that incorporate DMI necessitates a thorough understanding of how the interaction presents and can be measured. One approach is to measure growth asymmetry of chiral bubble domains in perpendicularly magnetized thin films, which has been described el…
The motion of magnetic domain walls in ultrathin magnetic heterostructures driven by current via the spin Hall torque is described. We show results from perpendicularly magnetized CoFeB|MgO heterostructures with various heavy metal underlayers. The domain wall moves along or against the current flow depending on the underlayer material. The direction to which the domain wall moves is associated with the chirality of the domain wall spiral formed in these heterostructures. The one-dimensional model is used to describe the experimental results and extract parameters such as the Dzyaloshinskii-Mo…
The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in magnetic systems stabilizes spin textures with preferred chirality, applicable to next-generation memory and computing architectures. In perpendicularly magnetized heavy-metal/ferromagnet films, the interfacial DMI originating from structural inversion asymmetry and strong spin-orbit coupling favors chiral Néel-type domain walls (DWs) whose energetics and mobility remain at issue. Here, we characterize a new effect in which domains expand unidirectionally in response to a combination of out-of-plane and in-plane magnetic fields, with the growth di…
We report on the occurrence of strong interlayer Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) between an in-plane magnetized Co layer and a perpendicularly magnetized TbFe layer through a Pt spacer. The DMI causes a chiral coupling that favors one-handed orthogonal magnetic configurations of Co and TbFe, which we reveal through Hall effect and magnetoresistance measurements. The DMI coupling mediated by Pt causes effective magnetic fields on either layer of up to 10-15 mT, which decrease monotonously with increasing Pt thickness. Ru, Ta, and Ti spacers mediate a significantly smaller coupling compa…
We demonstrate a unidirectional motion of a quasiparticle without an explicit symmetry breaking along the space-time coordinate of the particle motion. This counterintuitive behavior originates from a combined action of two intrinsic asymmetries in the other two directions. We realize this idea with the magnon-driven motion of a magnetic domain wall in thin films with interfacial asymmetry. Contrary to previous studies, the domain wall moves along the same direction regardless of the magnon-flow direction. Our general symmetry analysis and numerical simulation reveal that the odd order contrib…
We theoretically study the joint influence of uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions, symmetric exchange anisotropy (with its axis parallel to the DM vector) and arbitrarily oriented magnetic fields on one-dimensional spin 1/2 antiferromagnets. We show that the zero-temperature phase diagram contains three competing phases: (i) an antiferromagnet with Neel vector in the plane spanned by the DM vector and the magnetic field, (ii) a {\em dimerized} antiferromagnet with Neel vector perpendicular to both the DM vector and the magnetic field, and (iii) a gapless Luttinger liquid. Phase (i)…
We study current induced magnetization dynamics in a long thin ferromagnetic wire with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). We find a spiral domain wall configuration of the magnetization and obtain an analytical expression for the width of the domain wall as a function of the interaction strengths. Our findings show that above a certain value of DMI a domain wall configuration cannot exist in the wire. Below this value we determine the domain wall dynamics for small currents, and calculate the drift velocity of the domain wall along the wire. We show that the DMI suppresses the minimum va…
Interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) is experimentally investigated in Pt/Co/Pt multilayer films under strain. A strong variation (from 0.1 to 0.8 mJ/m$^2$) of the DMI constant is demonstrated at $\pm 0.1\%$ in-plane uniaxial deformation of the films. The anisotropic strain induces strong DMI anisotropy. The DMI constant perpendicular to the strain direction changes sign while the constant along the strain direction does not. Estimates are made showing that DMI manipulation with an electric field can be realized in hybrid ferroelectric/ferromagnetic systems. So, the observed eff…
Domain phases in ultrathin Fe/Ni/W(110) films with perpendicular anisotropy have been studied using the ac magnetic susceptibility. Dynamics on time scales of minutes to hours were probed by quenching the system from high temperature to the stripe phase region, and varying the constant rate of temperature increase as the susceptibility traces were measured. The entire susceptibility peak is observed to relax slowly along the temperature axis, with the peak temperature increasing as the rate of heating is decreased. This is precisely opposite to what would happen if this slow relaxation was dri…
Perpendicularly magnetized materials have attracted tremendous interest due to their high anisotropy, which results in extremely narrow, nano-sized domain walls. As a result, the recently studied current-induced domain wall motion (CIDWM) in these materials promises to enable a novel class of data, memory, and logic devices. In this letter, we propose the spin Hall effect as a radically new mechanism for CIDWM. We are able to carefully tune the net spin Hall current in depinning experiments on Pt/Co/Pt nanowires, offering unique control over CIDWM. Furthermore, we determine that the depinning …
Current-induced dynamics of twisted domain walls and skyrmions in ferromagnetic perpendicularly magnetized multilayers is studied through three-dimensional micromagnetic simulations and analytical modeling. It is shown that such systems generally exhibit a Walker breakdown-like phenomenon in the presence of current-induced damping-like spin-orbit torque. Above a critical current threshold, corresponding to typical velocities of the order tens of m/s, domain walls in some layers start to precess with frequencies in the gigahertz regime, which leads to oscillatory motion and a significant drop i…
We present an overview of the microscopic theory of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) coupling and related exchange-relativistic effects such as exchange anisotropy, electron-nuclear antisymmetric supertransferred hyperfine interactions, antisymmetric magnetogyrotropic effects, and antisymmetric magnetoelectric coupling in strongly correlated 3$d$ compounds focusing on orthoferrites RFeO$_3$ (R is a rare-earth ion or yttrium Y). % Particular emphasis will be placed on the role of crystal field effects, the sense and direction of the Dzyaloshinskii vector, its dependence on the superexchange bondi…
It is well documented that subjecting perpendicular magnetic films which exhibit the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) to an in-plane magnetic field results in a domain wall (DW) energy, $σ$, that is highly anisotropic with respect to the orientation of the DW in the film plane, $Θ$. We demonstrate that this anisotropy has a profound impact on the elastic response of the DW as characterized by the surface stiffness, $\tildeσ(Θ) = σ(Θ) + σ"(Θ)$, and evaluate its dependence on the length scale of deformation. The influence of the stiffness on DW mobility in the creep regime is …
Magnetic skyrmions, which are topologically distinct magnetic spin textures, are gaining increased attention for their unique physical properties and potential applications in spintronic devices. Here we present a design strategy for skyrmion host candidates based on combinations of magnetic spin, asymmetric building units having stereo-active lone-pair electrons, and polar lattice symmetry. To demonstrate the viability of the proposed rational design principles, we successfully synthesized Fe(IO3)3 polycrystalline sample and single crystals by using a new simplified low-temperature pathway, w…
Chiral magnetic textures in ultrathin perpendicularly magnetised multilayer film stacks with an interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction have been the focus of much research recently. The chirality associated with the broken inversion symmetry at the interface between an ultrathin ferromagnetic layer and a heavy metal with large spin-orbit coupling supports homochiral Néel domain walls and hedgehog (Néel) skyrmions. Under spin-orbit torques these Néel type magnetic structures are predicted, and have been measured, to move at high velocities. However recent studies have indicated that some…

The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction is an antisymmetric exchange interaction that is responsible for the emergence of chiral magnetism. The origin of the DM interaction, however, remains to be identified albeit the large number of studies reported on related effects. It has been recently suggested that the DM interaction is equivalent to an equilibrium spin current density originating from spin-orbit coupling, an effect referred to as the spin Doppler effect. The model predicts that the DM interaction can be controlled by spin current injected externally. Here we show that the DM exchan…
The interfacial Dyzaloshinskii-Moria interaction (DMI) helps to stabilize chiral domain walls and magnetic skyrmions, which will facilitate new magnetic memories and spintronics logic devices. The study of interfacial DMI in perpendicularly magnetized structurally asymmetric heavy metal (HM) / ferromagnetic (FM) multilayer systems is of high importance due to the formation of chiral magnetic textures in the presence of DMI. Here, we report the impact of the cobalt oxidation at the cobalt -aluminum oxide interface in Pt/Co/AlOx trilayer structure on the DMI by varying the post-growth annealing …
Recent advances in the understanding of spin orbital effects in ultrathin magnetic heterostructures have opened new paradigms to control magnetic moments electrically. The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) is said to play a key role in forming a Neel-type domain wall that can be driven by the spin Hall torque, a torque resulting from the spin current generated in a neighboring non-magnetic layer via the spin Hall effect. Here we show that the strength and sign of the DMI can be changed by modifying the adjacent heavy metal underlayer (X) in perpendicularly magnetized X|CoFeB|MgO heterstr…
We study how the shape of the spinwave resonance lines in rf-voltage induced FMR can be used to extract the spinwave density of states and the damping within the precessing layer in nanoscale tunnel junctions that possess perpendicular anisotropy. We work with a field applied along the easy axis to preserve the uniaxial symmetry of the system. We describe the set-up to study the susceptibility contributions of the spin waves in the field-frequency space. We then identify the maximum device size above which the spinwaves can no longer be studied in isolation as the linewidths of their responses…
Magnetic heterostructures that combine large spin-orbit torque efficiency, perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, and low resistivity are key to develop electrically-controlled memory and logic devices. Here we report on vector measurements of the current-induced spin orbit torques and magnetization switching in perpendicularly magnetized Pd/Co/AlO$_x$ layers as a function of Pd thickness. We find sizeable damping-like (DL) and field-like (FL) torques, of the order of 1~mT per $10^7$~A/cm$^2$, which have different thickness and magnetization angle dependence. The analysis of the DL torque efficien…
We study solitons in a zig-zag lattice of magnetic dipoles. The lattice comprises two sublattices of parallel chains with magnetic dipoles at their vertices. Due to orthogonal easy planes of rotation for dipoles belonging to different sublattices, the total dipolar energy of this system is separable into a sum of symmetric and chiral long-ranged interactions between the magnets where the last takes the form of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya coupling. For a specific range of values of the offset between sublattices, the dipoles realize an equilibrium magnetic state in the lattice plane, consisting of on…

Here, we theoretically analyze spectra of weakly attenuated electromagnetic waves which may appear in a Fermi-liquid of charge carriers in quasi-two-dimensional (Q2D) layered conductors when an external magnetic field is applied perpendicularly to the conducting layers. We study transverse modes propagating along the magnetic field. The frequencies of the modes are assumed to be lower than the cyclotron frequency of the charge carriers. It is shown that Fermi-liquid interaction of the charge carriers in Q2D conductors gives rise to a mode which cannot appear in a gase of charged quasiparticles…
We apply the recently formulated torque equilibrium spin wave theory (TESWT) to compute the $1/S$-order interacting $K$ -edge bimagnon resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra of an anisotropic triangular lattice antiferromagnet with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. We extend the interacting torque equilibrium formalism, incorporating the effects of DM interaction, to appropriately account for the zero-point quantum fluctuation that manifests as the emergence of spin Casimir effect in a noncollinear spin spiral state. Using inelastic neutron scattering data from Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$…
Two classes of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) mechanisms have been considered as candidate sources for the spin orbit torque (SOT): the spin Hall Effect (SHE) in heavy metals with strong SOC and the Rashba effect arising from broken inversion symmetry at material surfaces and interfaces. In this work, we have investigated the SOT in perpendicularly magnetized Pt/Co/W films, which is compared with the results in Pt/Co/AlOx films. Theoretically, in the case of the asymmetric structure of trilayers with opposite sign of spin Hall angle, both damping like torque and field like torque due to the SHE and…
Chiral domain walls in ultrathin perpendicularly magnetised layers have a Néel structure stabilised by a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) that is generated at the interface between the ferromagnet and a heavy metal. Different heavy metals are required above and below a ferromagnetic film in order to generate the structural inversion asymmetry needed to ensure that the DMI arising at the two interfaces does not cancel. Here we report on the magnetic properties of epitaxial Pt/Co/Au$_x$Pt$_{1-x}$ trilayers grown by sputtering onto sapphire substrates with 0.6 nm thick Co. As $x$ rises fro…
The promise of high-density and low-energy-consumption devices motivates the search for layered structures that stabilize chiral spin textures such as topologically protected skyrmions. At the same time, layered structures provide a new platform for the discovery of new physics and effects. Recently discovered long-range intrinsic magnetic orders in the two-dimensional van der Waals materials offer new opportunities. Here we demonstrate the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and Néel-type skyrmions are induced at the WTe2/Fe3GeTe2 interface. Fe3GeTe2 is a ferromagnetic material with strong perp…
