Chiral domain walls in ultrathin perpendicularly magnetised layers have a Néel structure stabilised by a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) that is generated at the interface between the ferromagnet and a heavy metal. Different heavy metals are required above and below a ferromagnetic film in order to generate the structural inversion asymmetry needed to ensure that the DMI arising at the two interfaces does not cancel. Here we report on the magnetic properties of epitaxial Pt/Co/Au$_x$Pt$_{1-x}$ trilayers grown by sputtering onto sapphire substrates with 0.6 nm thick Co. As $x$ rises from 0 to 1 a structural inversion asymmetry is generated. We characterise the epilayer structure with x-ray diffraction and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy, revealing (111) stacking. The saturation magnetization falls as the proximity magnetisation in Pt is reduced, whilst the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy $K_\mathrm{u}$ rises. The micromagnetic DMI strength $D$ was determined using the bubble expansion technique and also rises from a negligible value when $x=0$ to $\sim 1$ mJ/m$^2$ for $x = 1$. The depinning field at which field-driven domain wall motion crosses from the creep to the depinning regime rises from $\sim 40$ to $\sim 70$ mT, attributed to greater spatial fluctuations of the domain wall energy with increasing Au concentration. Meanwhile, the increase in DMI causes the Walker field to rise from $\sim 10$ to $\sim 280$ mT, meaning that only in the $x = 1$ sample is the steady flow regime accessible. The full dependence of domain wall velocity on driving field bears little resemblance to the prediction of a simple one-dimensional model, but can be described very well using micromagnetic simulations with a realistic model of disorder. These reveal a rise in Gilbert damping as $x$ increases.
Epitaxial trilayer structures consisting of two antifferomagnetic charge/orbital order insulators Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3 (PCMO) and La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 (LCMO) are grown on (001)-oriented SrTiO3 and LaAlO3 substrates. In this trilayer series, a thin film of LCMO with various thicknesses is sandwiched between the two fixed thicknesses of PCMO. These samples show a Curie temperature with a hysteretic field dependent magnetization at 10 K, although the individual compounds are antiferromagnetic. The zero field electronic transport of all samples on LAO shows thermally activated behavior, while the thermally ac…
Interlayer exchange couplings were examined for Co2FeAl0.5Si0.5(CFAS)/Cr/CFAS trilayered films grown on MgO (001) single crystal and thermally oxidized Si substrates. The films were (001) epitaxial on MgO and (110) textured polycrystalline on SiO2. Strong exchange couplings were observed for the films with the 1.5 nm thick Cr spacer layer. A 90 degree coupling is dominant in the (001) epitaxial film. In contrast, an antiparallel coupling exists in the polycrystalline one. The relationship of interlayer couplings with the structure is discussed.
We report magnetic and electrical transport studies of an epitaxially grown trilayer thin film structure comprising La0.59Ca0.41MnO3 sandwiched between La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 electrodes. Since La0.59Ca0.41MnO3 lies at the edge of the thin film ferromagnetic metallic phase field, phase separation effects are expected. These effects can explain the observed magnetic isotropy of the middle layer. By contrast, the electrode material is magnetically uniaxial. Easy axis magnetic field sweeps of the trilayer produce two sharp magnetic transitions, but only one sharp transition in current-in-plane resistanc…

Recent advances on the stabilization and manipulation of chiral magnetization configurations in systems consisting in alternating atomic layers of ferromagnetic and non-magnetic materials hold promise of innovation in spintronics technology. The low dimensionality of the systems promotes spin orbit driven interfacial effects like antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMI) and surface magnetic anisotropy, whose relative strengths may be tuned to achieve stable nanometer sized magnetic objects with fixed chirality. While in most of the cases this is obtained by engineering complex mu…
We investigate the motion of magnetic domain walls driven by magnetic fields and current-driven spin-orbit torques in an exchange-biased system with perpendicular magnetization. We consider Cr2O3/Co/Pt trilayers as model system, in which the magnetization of the Co layer can be exchanged-biased out-of-plane or in-plane depending on the field cooling direction. In field-driven experiments, the in-plane exchange bias favors the propagation of the domain walls with internal magnetization parallel to the exchange bias field. In current-driven experiments, the domain walls propagate along the curre…
We study thermally assisted domain wall generation in perpendicular magnetic anisotropy CoFeB trilayer nanowires by the effect of Joule heating. The anomalous Hall effect is utilized to detect magnetization reversal in order to study the domain wall generation. We observe a statistical distribution in the switching process which is consistent with the thermal activation process. Our results show that the proposed method provides an efficient way for generating domain walls in perpendicular magnetic nanowires at predefined locations.
The magnetization reversal and spin structure in circular Co/insulator/Ni80Fe20 trilayer dots has been investigated numerically. The effect of dipolar coupling between a soft ferromagnetic Permalloy (Py=Ni80Fe20) layer and a hard ferromagnetic Cobalt layer inside one stack is studied. We find either a stabilization or even a triggering of the vortex state in the Py layer due to the magnetic stray field of the Co layer, while the Co magnetization remains in a single-domain state. Furthermore, for thin Py layers a 360 deg-domain wall is observed. We construct a phase diagram, where regions of vo…
We investigated the ferroelectric domain wall propagation in epitaxial Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 thin films over a wide temperature range (3 - 300 K). We measured the domain wall velocity under various electric fields and found that the velocity data is strongly nonlinear with electric fields, especially at low temperature. We found that, as one of surface growth problems, our domain wall velocity data from ferroelectric epitaxial film could be classified into the creep, depinning, and flow regimes due to competition between disorder and elasticity. The measured values of velocity and dynamical exponents in…
Mechanical restoring forces acting on ferroelastic domain walls displaced from the equilibrium positions in epitaxial films are calculated for various modes of their cooperative translational oscillations. For vibrations of the domain-wall superlattice with the wave vectors corresponding to the center and boundaries of the first Brillouin zone, the soft modes are singled out that are distinguished by a minimum magnitude of the restoring force. It is shown that, in polydomain ferroelectric thin films, the soft modes of wall vibrations may create enormously large contribution to the film permitt…
We investigated the time-dependent domain wall motion of epitaxial PbZr0.2Ti0.8O3 capacitors 100 nm-thick using modified piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM). We obtained successive domain evolution images reliably by combining the PFM with switching current measurements. We observed that domain wall speed (v) decreases with increases in domain size. We also observed that the average value of v, obtained under applied electric field (Eapp),showed creep behavior: i.e. <v> ~ exp(-E0/Eapp)^$μ$ with an exponent $μ$ of 0.9 $\pm$ 0.1 and an activation field E0 of about 700 kV/cm.
We show that the coupling between two ferromagnetic layers separated by a nonmagnetic spacer can be used to control the depinning of domain walls and induce unidirectional domain wall propagation. We investigated CoFeB/Ti/CoFeB trilayers where the easy axis of the magnetization of the top CoFeB layer is out-of-plane and that of the bottom layer is in-plane. Using Magneto-optic Kerr effect microscopy, we find that the depinning of a domain wall in the perpendicularly magnetized CoFeB layer is influenced by the orientation of the magnetization of the in-plane layer, which gives rise to a field-d…
The growth mode, magnetic and magneto-optical properties of epitaxial Au/Co/Au(111) ultrathin trilayers grown by pulsed-laser deposition (PLD) under ultra-high vacuum are presented. Sapphire wafers buffered with a single-crystalline Mo(110) bilayer were used as substrates. Owing to PLD-induced interfacial intermixing at the lower Co/Au(111) interface, a layer-by-layer growth mode is promoted. Surprisingly, despite this intermixing, ferromagnetic behavior is found at room temperature for coverings starting at 1 atomic layer (AL). The films display perpendicular magnetization with anisotropy con…
We report on domain pattern transfer from a ferroelectric BaTiO$_{\mathrm{3}}$ substrate with a $(111)$-orientation of the surface to an epitaxial Co film grown on a Pd buffer layer. Spatially modulated interfacial strain transfer from ferroelectric/ferroelastic domains and inverse magnetostriction in the ferromagnetic film induce stripe regions with a modulation of the in-plane uniaxial magnetic anisotropy direction. Using spin-polarized low energy electron microscopy, we observe the formation of two distinct anisotropy configurations between stripe regions. Moreover, through application of a…
Magnetic reversal processes of a FePt/α-Fe/FePt trilayer system with in-plane easy axes have been investigated within a micromagnetic approach. It is found that the magnetic reversal process consists of three steps: nucleation of a prototype of domain wall in the soft phase, the evolution as well as the motion of the domain wall from the soft to the hard phase and finally, the magnetic reversal of the hard phase. For small soft layer thickness Ls, the three steps are reduced to one single step, where the magnetizations in the two phases reverse simultaneously and the hysteresis loops are squar…
Group-IV-based ferromagnetic semiconductor Ge1-xFex (GeFe) is one of the most promising materials for efficient spin injectors and detectors for Si and Ge. Recent first principles calculations (Sakamoto et al., Ref. 9) suggested that the Fermi level is located in two overlapping largely spin-polarized bands formed in the bandgap of GeFe; spin-down d(e) band and spin-up p-d(t2) band. Thus, it is important to clarify how these bands contribute to spin injection and detection. In this study, we show the first successful observation of the tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) in magnetic tunnel junct…
The Dzyaloshinskii Moriya interaction (DMI) generates intriguing chiral magnetic objects such as magnetic skyrmions and chiral domain walls that can be used as building blocks in emerging magnetic nanodevices. To achieve better stability and functionality of these chiral objects, it is essential to achieve a larger DMI. In this paper, we report an experimental observation that in magnetic trilayer films, the DMI strength is mainly determined by the work functions of the nonmagnetic layers interfaced with the magnetic layer. The clear correlation with the intrinsic material parameters provides …
Thick, high quality 4H-SiC epilayers have been grown in a vertical hot-wall chemical vapor deposition system at a high growth rate on (0001) 80 off-axis substrates. We discuss the use of dichlorosilane as the Si-precursor for 4H-SiC epitaxial growth as it provides the most direct decomposition route into SiCl2, which is the predominant growth species in chlorinated chemistries. A specular surface morphology was attained by limiting the hydrogen etch rate until the system was equilibrated at the desired growth temperature. The RMS roughness of the grown films ranged from 0.5-2.0 nm with very fe…
We have studied a series of Pt/Co/M epitaxial trilayers, in which Co is sandwiched between Pt and a non magnetic layer M (Pt, Ir, Cu, Al). Using polar magneto-optical Kerr microscopy, we show that the field- induced domain wall speeds are strongly dependent on the nature of the top layer, they increase going from M=Pt to lighter top metallic overlayers, and can reach several 100 m/s for Pt/Co/Al. The DW dynamics is consistent with the presence of chiral Néel walls stabilized by interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) whose strength increases going from Pt to Al top layers. This is …
We have studied the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in a series of Pt/Co/MOx (M=Al, Gd) trilayers in which the degree of oxidation of the top Co interface is varied. To access to reliable values of the DMI strength, we have used a method based on the measurement of the saturation velocity of field driven chiral Néel domain walls. We show that the effective DMI strength in the Pt/Co/MOx trilayers varies with the oxidation degree of the Co/MOx interface. This strongly suggests that the Co/MOx interface gives a distinct contribution to the total DMI, adding to that of the Pt/C…
We demonstrate reproducible voltage induced non-volatile switching of the magnetization in an epitaxial thin Fe81Ga19 film. Switching is induced at room temperature and without the aid of an external magnetic field. This is achieved by the modification of the magnetic anisotropy by mechanical strain induced by a piezoelectric transducer attached to the layer. Epitaxial Fe81Ga19 is shown to possess the favourable combination of cubic magnetic anisotropy and large magnetostriction necessary to achieve this functionality with experimentally accessible levels of strain. The switching of the magnet…
Magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) microscopy measurements of magnetic bubble domains demonstrate that Ar+ irradiation around 100 eV can tune the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in Pt/Co/Pt trilayers. Varying the irradiation energy and dose changes the DMI sign and magnitude separately from the magnetic anisotropy, allowing tuning of the DMI while holding the coercive field constant. This simultaneous control emphasizes the different physical origins of these effects. To accurately measure the DMI, we propose and apply a physical model for a poorly understood peak in domain wall veloci…
We present the results of experimental investigations of magnetic switching and magnetotransport in a new generation of magnetic devices containing artificially patterned domains. Our devices are realised by locally reducing the coercive field of a perpendicularly magnetised Pt (3.5 nm)/Co (0.5 nm)/Pt (1.6 nm) trilayer structure using a gallium focused ion beam (FIB). Artificial domain walls are created at the interfaces between dosed and undosed regions when an external magnetic field switches the former but not the latter. We have exploited this property to create stripe-like domains with wi…
We present a detailed numerical simulation study of the effects caused by the magnetodipolar interaction between ferromagnetic (FM) layers of a trilayer magnetic nanoelement on its magnetization dynamics. As an example we use a Co/Cu/Ni80Fe20 element with a square lateral shape where the magnetization of FM layers forms a closed Landau-like domain pattern. First we show that when the thickness of the non-magnetic (NM) spacer is in the technology relevant region h ~ 10 nm, magnetodipolar interaction between 90o Neel domain walls in FM layers qualitatively changes the equilibrium magnetization s…
The use of epitaxial layers for domain wall-based spintronic applications is often hampered by the presence of pinning sites. Here, we show that when depositing Mn4N(10 nm) epitaxial films, the replacement of MgO(001) by SrTiO3(001) substrates allows minimizing the misfit, and to obtain an improved crystalline quality, a sharper switching, a full remanence, a high anisotropy and remarkable millimeter-sized magnetic domains, with straight and smooth domain walls. In a context of rising interest for current-induced domain wall motion in rare
Atomic force microscopy was used to investigate ferroelectric switching and nanoscale domain dynamics in epitaxial PbZr0.2Ti0.8O3 thin films. Measurements of the writing time dependence of domain size reveal a two-step process in which nucleation is followed by radial domain growth. During this growth, the domain wall velocity exhibits a v ~ exp[-(1/E)^mu] dependence on the electric field, characteristic of a creep process. The domain wall motion was analyzed both in the context of stochastic nucleation in a periodic potential as well as the canonical creep motion of an elastic manifold in a d…
We exploit the ability to precisely control the magnetic domain structure of perpendicularly magnetized Pt/Co/Pt trilayers to fabricate artificial domain wall arrays and study their transport properties. The scaling behaviour of this model system confirms the intrinsic domain wall origin of the magnetoresistance, and systematic studies using domains patterned at various angles to the current flow are excellently described by an angular-dependent resistivity tensor containing perpendicular and parallel domain wall resistivities. We find that the latter are fully consistent with Levy-Zhang theor…
Recent works have shown that the domain walls of room-temperature multiferroic BiFeO3 (BFO) thin films can display distinct and promising functionalities. It is thus important to understand the mechanisms underlying domain formation in these films. High-resolution x-ray diffraction and piezo-force microscopy, combined with first-principles simulations, have allowed us to characterize both the atomic and domain structure of BFO films grown under compressive strain on (001)-SrTiO3, as a function of thickness. We derive a twining model that describes the experimental observations and explains why…
We have studied the influence of the magnetization on the superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) in bi- and trilayers consisting of the half-metallic ferromagnet La$_{0.67}$Sr$_{0.33}$MnO$_3$ (LSMO) and the high-temperature superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ (YBCO). We have made use of tilted epitaxial growth in order to achieve contacts between the two materials that are partly in the crystallographic $ab$-plane of the YBCO. As a result of uniaxial magnetic anisotropy in the tilted structures, we observe sharp magnetization switching behavior. At temperatures close to $T_c$, the ma…
High quality WSe2 films have been grown on bilayer graphene (BLG) with layer-by-layer control of thickness using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). The combination of angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES), scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS), and optical absorption measurements reveal the atomic and electronic structures evolution and optical response of WSe2/BLG. We observe that a bilayer of WSe2 is a direct bandgap semiconductor, when integrated in a BLG-based heterostructure, thus shifting the direct-indirect band gap crossover to trilayer WSe2. In the monolayer limit, WSe2 shows…
A thermodynamic theory is developed for dense laminar domain structures in epitaxial ferrolectric films. It is found that, at some critical misfit strain between the film and substrate, the 90 degrees c/a/c/a domain structure becomes unstable with respect to the appearance of the polarization component parallel to domain walls, which results in the formation of a heterophase structure. For PbTiO_3 and BaTiO_3 films, the stability ranges of polydomain and heterophase states are determined using "misfit strain - temperature" diagrams. Dielectric anomalies accompanying misfit-strain-driven struct…
Electronic carriers in graphene show a high carrier mobility at room temperature. Thus, this system is widely viewed as a potential future charge-based high-speed electronic-material to complement- or replace- silicon. At the same time, the spin properties of graphene have suggested improved capability for spin-based electronics or spintronics, and spin-based quantum computing. As a result, the detection, characterization, and transport of spin have become topics of interest in graphene. Here we report a microwave photo-excited transport study of monolayer and trilayer graphene that reveals an…
We investigate the magnetization reversal in Fe/MgO(001) films with fourfold in-plane magnetic anisotropy and an additional uniaxial anisotropy whose orientation and strength are tuned using different growth geometries and post growth treatments. The previously adopted mechanism of 180^{o} domain wall nucleation clearly fails to explain the observed 180^{o} magnetization reversal. A new reversal mechanism with two successive domain wall nucleations consistently predicts the switching fields for all field orientations. Our results are relevant for a correct interpretation of magnetization rever…
Current-induced magnetic domain wall motion at zero magnetic field is observed in the permalloy layer of a spin-valve-based nanostripe using photoemission electron microscopy. The domain wall movement is hampered by pinning sites, but in between them high domain wall velocities (exceeding 150 m/s) are obtained for current densities well below $10^{12} \unit{A/m^2}$, suggesting that these trilayer systems are promising for applications in domain wall devices in case of well controlled pinning positions. Vertical spin currents in these structures provide a potential explanation for the increase …
We studied the symmetry of magnetic properties and the resulting magnetic textures in ultra-thin epitaxial Au$_{0.67}$Pt$_{0.33}$/Co/W, a model system exhibiting perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and interface Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). As a peculiar feature, the C$_\mathrm{2v}$ crystal symmetry induced by the Co/W interface results in an additional uniaxial in-plane magnetic anisotropy in the cobalt layer. Photoemission electron microscopy with magnetic sensitivity reveals the formation of self-organized magnetic stripe domains oriented parallel to the hard in-plane magnetizatio…
We report on the structural, magnetic, and electron transport properties of a L1o-ordered epitaxial iron-platinum alloy layer fabricated by magnetron-sputtering on a MgO(001) substrate. The film studied displayed a long range chemical order parameter of S~0.90, and hence has a very strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. In the diffusive electron transport regime, for temperatures ranging from 2 K to 258 K, we found hysteresis in the magnetoresistance mainly due to electron scattering from magnetic domain walls. At 2 K, we observed an overall domain wall magnetoresistance of about 0.5 %. By …
The effect of magnetic domain boundaries displacement induced by electric field is observed in epitaxial ferrite garnet films (on substrates with the (210) crystallographic orientation). The effect is odd with respect to the electric field (the direction of wall displacement changes with the polarity of the voltage) and even with respect to the magnetization in domains. The inhomogeneous magnetoelectric interaction as a possible mechanism of the effect is proposed.
A Landau-Ginsburg-Devonshire-type nonlinear phenomenological theory is presented, which enables the thermodynamic description of dense laminar polydomain states in epitaxial ferroelectric thin films. The theory explicitly takes into account the mechanical substrate effect on the polarizations and lattice strains in dissimilar elastic domains (twins). Numerical calculations are performed for PbTiO3 and BaTiO3 films grown on (001)-oriented cubic substrates. The "misfit strain-temperature" phase diagrams are developed for these films, showing stability ranges of various possible polydomain and si…

The propagation of a magnetic domain wall (DW) in a submicron magnetic wire consisting of a magnetic/nonmagnetic/magnetic trilayered structure with asymmetric notches was investigated by utilizing the giant magnetoresistance effect. The propagation direction of a DW was controlled by a pulsed local magnetic field, which nucleates the DW at one of the two ends of the wire. It was found that the depinning field of the DW from the notch depends on the propagation direction of the DW.
The Moiré structure of epitaxial graphene mono layer grown on 6H-SiC(0001) has been investigated recently by grazing incidence fast atom diffraction, and the results were compared with the calculation of the structure \textit{ab initio} and exact diffraction codes. We review these results and present a complementary approach using the Hard Wall Model to extract information without any \textit{a priori}. Reversely, taking advantage of previous exact calculations we evaluate quantitatively the performance of this simplified approach by comparing predictions using the same potential energy surfac…
Domain-wall magnetoresistance and low-frequency noise have been studied in epitaxial antiferromagnetically-coupled [Fe/Cr(001)]_10 multilayers and ferromagnetic Co line structures as a function of DC current intensity. In [Fe/Cr(001)]_10 multilayers a transition from excess to suppressed domain-wall induced 1/f noise above current densities of j_c ~ 2*10^5 A/cm^2 has been observed. In ferromagnetic Co line structures the domain wall related noise remains qualitatively unchanged up to current densities exceeding 10^6A/cm^2. Theoretical estimates of the critical current density for a synthetic F…
Control of magnetic domain wall motion by electric fields has recently attracted scientific attention because of its potential for magnetic logic and memory devices. Here, we report on a new driving mechanism that allows for magnetic domain wall motion in an applied electric field without the concurrent use of a magnetic field or spin-polarized electric current. The mechanism is based on elastic coupling between magnetic and ferroelectric domain walls in multiferroic heterostructures. Pure electric-field driven magnetic domain wall motion is demonstrated for epitaxial Fe films on BaTiO$_3$ wit…
For epitaxial trilayers of the magnetic rare-earth metals Gd and Tb, exchange coupled through a non-magnetic Y spacer layer, element-specific hysteresis loops were recorded by the x-ray magneto-optical Kerr effect at the rare-earth $M_5$ thresholds. This allowed us to quantitatively determine the strength of interlayer exchange coupling (IEC). In addition to the expected oscillatory behavior as a function of spacer-layer thickness $d_Y$, a temperature-induced sign reversal of IEC was observed for constant $d_Y$, arising from magnetization-dependent electron reflectivities at the magnetic inter…
For the magnetic shape memory effect, knowledge about the interaction between martensitic and magnetic domain structure is essential. In the case of Ni-Mn-Ga bulk material and foils, a staircase-like magnetic domain structure with 90°- and 180°-domain walls is known for modulated martensite. In the present paper we show that the magnetic domain pattern of thin epitaxial films is fundamentally different. Here we analyze epitaxial Ni-Mn-Ga films by atomic and magnetic force microscopy to investigate the correlation between the twinned martensitic variants and the magnetic stripe domains. The obs…
In studies using piezoresponse force microscopy, we observe a non-zero lateral piezoresponse at 180$^\circ$ domain walls in out-of-plane polarized, c-axis-oriented tetragonal ferroelectric Pb(Zr$_{0.2}$Ti$_{0.8}$)O$_3$ epitaxial thin films. We attribute these observations to a shear strain effect linked to the sign change of the $d_{33}$ piezoelectric coefficient through the domain wall, in agreement with theoretical predictions. We show that in monoclinically distorted tetragonal BiFeO$_3$ films, this effect is superimposed on the lateral piezoresponse due to actual in-plane polarization, and…
Magnetization reversal and domain wall dynamics in Pt/Co/AlOx trilayers have been tuned by He+ ion irradiation. Fluences up to 1.5x10$^{15}$ ions/cm$^2$ strongly decrease the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA), without affecting neither the spontaneous magnetization nor the strength of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). This confirms the robustness of the DMI interaction against interfacial chemical intermixing, already predicted by theory. In parallel with the decrease of the PMA in the irradiated samples, a strong decrease of the depinning field is observed. This allows the do…

We studied magnetic-field induced microwave absorption in 100-200 nm thick La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$ films on SrTiO$_{3}$ substrate and found a low-field absorption with a very peculiar angular dependence: it appears only in the oblique field and is absent both in the parallel and in the perpendicular orientations. We demonstrate that this low-field absorption results from the ferromagnetic resonance in the multidomain state (domain-mode resonance). Its unusual angular dependence arises from the interplay between the parallel component of the magnetic field that drives the film into multid…
Interface physics in oxide heterostructures is pivotal in material's science. Domain walls (DWs) in ferroic systems are examples of naturally occurring interfaces, where order parameter of neighboring domains is modified and emerging properties may develop. Here we show that electric tuning of ferroelastic domain walls in SrTiO3 leads to dramatic changes of the magnetic domain structure of a neighboring magnetic layer (La1/2Sr1/2MnO3) epitaxially clamped on a SrTiO3 substrate. We show that by exploiting the resposiveness of DWs nanoregions to external stimuli, even in absence of any domain con…
Thin films of orthorhombic TbMnO3, as well as other orthorhombic manganites, epitaxially grown on cubic SrTiO3 substrates display an induced magnetic moment that is absent in the bulk (antiferromagnetic) counterpart. Here we show that there is a clear correlation between the domain microstructure and the induced magnetic moment in TbMnO3 films on SrTiO3. In addition, the distinct dependence of the magnetization with the film thickness is not consistent with domain magnetism and indicates that the domain walls, rather than the domains, are the origin of the net magnetic moment. Since the orient…

BiFeO3 thin films epitaxially grown on SrRuO3-buffered (001)-oriented SrTiO3 substrates show orthogonal bundles of twin domains, each of which contains parallel and periodic 71o domain walls. A smaller amount of 109o domain walls are also present at the boundaries between two adjacent bundles. All as-grown twin walls display enhanced conductivity with respect to the domains during local probe measurements, due to the selective lowering of the Schottky barrier between the film and the AFM tip (see S. Farokhipoor and B. Noheda, Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 127601 (2011)). In this paper we further discu…
