We studied the symmetry of magnetic properties and the resulting magnetic textures in ultra-thin epitaxial Au$_{0.67}$Pt$_{0.33}$/Co/W, a model system exhibiting perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and interface Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). As a peculiar feature, the C$_\mathrm{2v}$ crystal symmetry induced by the Co/W interface results in an additional uniaxial in-plane magnetic anisotropy in the cobalt layer. Photoemission electron microscopy with magnetic sensitivity reveals the formation of self-organized magnetic stripe domains oriented parallel to the hard in-plane magnetization axis. We attribute this behavior to the lower domain wall energy when oriented along this axis, where both the DMI and the in-plane magnetic anisotropy favor a Néel domain wall configuration. The anisotropic domain wall energy also leads to the formation of elliptical skyrmion bubbles in a weak out-of-plane magnetic field.
The discovery of magnetic skyrmion bubbles in centrosymmetric magnets has been receiving increasing interest from the research community, due to the fascinating physics of topological spin textures and its possible applications to spintronics. However, key challenges remain, such as how to manipulate the nucleation of skyrmion bubbles to exclude the trivial bubbles or metastable skyrmion bubbles that usually coexist with skyrmion bubbles in the centrosymmetric magnets. Here, we report having successfully performed this task by applying spatially geometric confinement to a centrosymmetric frust…
A detailed analytic and numerical analysis of the interaction between two bubble skyrmions has been carried out. Results from micromagnetic calculations show a strong dependence of the parameters of the skyrmion magnetic profile as a function of the magnetostatic interaction. The magnetic core and edge-width sizes of the skyrmion increase or decrease depending on the relative position between the skyrmions and the uniaxial perpendicular anisotropy. In particular, when a magnetic disk is over another, there is a transition from a Bloch-like skyrmion configuration to a Néel-like skyrmion configu…
Helicity indicates the in-plane magnetic-moment swirling direction of a skyrmionic configuration. The ability to reverse the helicity of a skyrmionic bubble via purely electrical means has been predicted in frustrated magnetic systems, however its experimental observation has remained challenging. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the current-driven helicity reversal of the skyrmionic bubble in a nanostructured frustrated Fe3Sn2 magnet. The critical current density required to trigger the helicity reversal is 109 - 1010 A/m2, with a corresponding pulse-width varying from 1 μs to 100 ns. Comp…
Room-temperature polar skyrmion bubbles that are recently found in oxide superlattice, have received enormous interests for their potential applications in nanoelectronics due to the nanometer size, emergent chirality, and negative capacitance. For practical applications, the ability to controllably manipulate them by using external stimuli is prerequisite. Here, we study the dynamics of individual polar skyrmion bubbles at the nanoscale by using in situ biasing in a scanning transmission electron microscope. The reversible electric field-driven phase transition between topological and trivial…
Recent advances on the stabilization and manipulation of chiral magnetization configurations in systems consisting in alternating atomic layers of ferromagnetic and non-magnetic materials hold promise of innovation in spintronics technology. The low dimensionality of the systems promotes spin orbit driven interfacial effects like antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMI) and surface magnetic anisotropy, whose relative strengths may be tuned to achieve stable nanometer sized magnetic objects with fixed chirality. While in most of the cases this is obtained by engineering complex mu…
We report dynamics of skyrmion bubbles driven by spin-transfer torque in achiral ferromagnetic nanostripes using micromagnetic simulations. In a three-dimensional uniaxial ferromagnet with a quality factor that is smaller than 1, the skyrmion bubble is forced to stay at the central nanostripe by a repulsive force from the geometry border. The coherent motion of skyrmion bubbles in the nanostripe can be realized by increasing the quality factor to ~3.8. Our results should propel the design for future spintronic devices such as artificial neural computing and racetrack memory based on dipole-sta…
Magnetic chiral skyrmion bubbles and achiral bubbles are two independent magnetic domain structures, in which the former with equivalent winding number to skyrmions offers great promise as information carriers for further spintronic devices. Here, in this work, we experimentally investigate the generation and annihilation of magnetic chiral skyrmion bubbles and achiral bubbles in the Mn-Ni-Ga thin plate by using the Lorentz transmission electron microscopy (L-TEM). The two independent magnetic domain structures can be directly controlled after the field cooling manipulation by varying the titl…
Magnetic skyrmion, a topological magnetic domain with complex non-coplanar spin texture, appears a disk-like structure in two dimensions. Exploring three-dimensional spin texture and related chirality switching has drawn enormous interests from the perspective of fundamental research. Here, the three-dimensional magnetic moment of the skyrmion bubbles in centrosymmetric Mn-Ni-Ga were reconstructed with the vector field tomography approach via Lorentz transmission electron microscopy. The type of the bubbles was determined from investigating the magnetic vectors in entire space. We found that t…
Nanoscale topologically non-trivial spin textures, such as magnetic skyrmions, have been identified as promising candidates for the transport and storage of information for spintronic applications, notably magnetic racetrack memory devices. The design and realization of single skyrmion chain at room temperature (RT) and above in the low-dimensional nanostructures are of great importance for future practical applications. Here, we report the creation of a single skyrmion bubble chain in a geometrically confined Fe3Sn2 nanostripe with a width comparable to the featured size of a skyrmion bubble.…
Polar bubble domains are complex topological defects akin to magnetic skyrmions that can spontaneously form in ferroelectric thin films and superlattices. They can be deterministically written and deleted and exhibit a set of properties, such as sub-10 nm radius and room-temperature stability, that are highly attractive for dense data storage and reconfigurable nano-electronics technologies. However, possibilities of controlled motion of electric bubble skyrmions, a critical technology requirement currently remains missing. Here we present atomistic simulations that demonstrate how external el…
Competing interactions produce finite-size textures in myriad condensed matter systems, typically forming elongated stripe or round bubble domains. Transitions between stripe and bubble phases, driven by field or temperature, are expected to be reversible in nature. Here we report on the distinct character of the analogous transition for nanoscale spin textures in chiral Co/Pt-based multilayer films, known to host Néel skyrmions, using microscopy, magnetometry, and micromagnetic simulations. Upon increasing field, individual stripes fission into multiple skyrmions, and this transition exhibits…

Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) magnetic materials have recently been introduced as a new horizon in materials science and enable the potential applications for next-generation spintronic devices. Here, in this communication, the observations of stable Bloch-type magnetic skyrmions in single crystals of 2D vdW Fe3GeTe2 (FGT) are reported by using in-situ Lorentz transmission electron microscopy (TEM). We find the ground-state magnetic stripe domains in FGT transform into skyrmion bubbles when an external magnetic field is applied perpendicularly to the (001) thin plate with temperatur…
Understanding the dynamics of the magnetic skyrmion, a particle-like topologically stable spin texture, and its response dynamics to external fields are indis-pensable for the applications in spintronic devices. In this letter, the Lorentz transmis-sion electron microscopy (LTEM) was used to investigate the spin chirality of the mag-netic skyrmion bubbles (SKBs) in the centrosymmetric magnet MnNiGa at room tem-perature. The reversal of SKBs excited by the in-plane magnetic field has been revealed. Moreover, the collective behavior of interacting spin chirality can be manipulated by reversing t…
The successful realization of skyrmion-based spintronic devices depends on the easy manipulation of underlying magnetic interactions in the skyrmion-hosting materials. Although the mechanism of skyrmion formation in non-centrosymmetric magnets is comprehensively established, the stabilization process of different skyrmion-like magnetic textures in centrosymmetric magnets needs further investigation. Here, we utilize Lorentz transmission electron microscopy study to report the finding of a tunable skyrmion lattice up to room temperature in a centrosymmetric kagome ferromagnet Mn$_4$Ga$_2$Sn. We…
Topological protection precludes a continuous deformation between topologically inequivalent configurations in a continuum. Motivated by this concept, magnetic skyrmions, topologically nontrivial spin textures, are expected to exhibit the topological stability, thereby offering a prospect as a nanometer-scale non-volatile information carrier. In real materials, however, atomic spins are configured as not continuous but discrete distribution, which raises a fundamental question if the topological stability is indeed preserved for real magnetic skyrmions. Answering this question necessitates a d…

In a $β$-Mn-type chiral magnet Co$_9$Zn$_9$Mn$_2$, we demonstrate that the magnetic field-driven collapse of a room temperature metastable topological skyrmion lattice passes through a regime described by a partial topological charge inversion. Using Lorentz transmission electron microscopy, the magnetization distribution was observed directly as the magnetic field was swept antiparallel to the original skyrmion core magnetization, i.e. negative magnetic fields. Due to the topological stability of skyrmions, a direct transition of the metastable skyrmion lattice to the equilibrium helical stat…
Spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (SPSTM) was used to directly image nanoscale Néel skyrmions in a SrIrO3 / SrRuO3 bilayer system that are among the smallest reported to date in any system. Off-axis magnetron sputtering was used to cap epitaxial films of the oxide ferromagnet SRO with 2 unit cells of SrIrO3, intended to provide interfacial spin orbit coupling. Atomic resolution STM imaging and tunneling spectroscopy were used to identify island-like SrIrO3 grains and small regions of bare SrRuO3. Isolated skyrmions were only observed in SrIrO3-covered regions of the film, and exhibi…
The topologically non-trivial nano-whirls, called magnetic skyrmions, are often considered attractive for spintronic applications like the racetrack data storage device. However, skyrmions do not move parallel to applied currents and typically do not coexist with other nano-objects, making the realization of such storage concepts difficult. Herein we consider materials with an anisotropic DMI, like tetragonal Heusler materials, and show that four distinct types of topologically trivial bubbles can coexist. We show that each of them can be written by spin torques and that they can be distinguis…
Magnetic materials with kagome crystal structure exhibit rich physics such as frustrated magnetism, skyrmion formation, topological flat bands, and Dirac/Weyl points. Until recently, most studies on kagome magnets have been performed on bulk crystals or polycrystalline films. Here we report the synthesis of high-quality epitaxial films of topological kagome magnet Fe$_3$Sn$_2$ by atomic layer molecular beam epitaxy. Structural and magnetic characterization of Fe$_3$Sn$_2$ on epitaxial Pt(111) identifies highly ordered films with c-plane orientation and an in-plane magnetic easy axis. Studies o…
Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) materials show a range of profound physical properties that can be tailored through their incorporation in heterostructures and manipulated with external forces. The recent discovery of long-range ferromagnetic order down to atomic layers provides an additional degree of freedom in engineering 2D materials and their heterostructure devices for spintronics, valleytronics and magnetic tunnel junction switches. Here, using direct imaging by cryo-Lorentz transmission electron microscopy we show that topologically nontrivial magnetic-spin states, skyrmionic …
