Structural, electronic and dielectric properties of high-quality ultrathin BaTiO3 films are investigated. The films, which are grown by ozone-assisted molecular beam epitaxy on Nb-doped SrTiO3 (001) substrates and having thicknesses as thin 8 unit cells (3.2 nm), are unreconstructed and atomically smooth with large crystalline terraces. A strain-driven transition to 3D island formation is observed for films of of 13 unit cells thickness (5.2 nm). The high structural quality of the surfaces, together with the dielectric properties similar to bulk BaTiO3 and dominantly TiO2 surface termination, make these films suitable templates for the synthesis of high-quality metal-oxide multiferroic heterostructures for the fundamental study and exploitation of magneto-electric effects, such as a recently proposed interface effect in Fe/BaTiO3 heterostructures based on Fe-Ti interface bonds.
We show that the type-II multiferroic properties of bulk MnWO4 are kept in nanostructured ceramics of 50 nm grain size prepared via spark plasma sintering (SPS). This means that ferroelectric polarization is robust against downsizing, which is at variance with standard ferroelectrics like BaTiO3. We ascribe this stability to the spin-driven nature of the ferroe-lectric correlations in type-II multiferroics while it is resulting from lattice distortion in other cases. This may open the way for persistent type-II multiferroicity with no need for external stabilization like substrate-generated st…
We report a Raman scattering investigation of columnar BiFeO3-CoFe2O4 (BFO-CFO) epitaxial thin film nanostructures, where BFO pillars are embedded in a CFO matrix. The feasibility of a strain analysis is illustrated through an investigation of two nanostructures with different BFO-CFO ratios. We show that the CFO matrix presents the same strain state in both nanostructures, while the strain state of the BFO pillars depends on the BFO/CFO ratio with an increasing tensile strain along the out-of-plane direction with decreasing BFO content. Our results demonstrate that Raman scattering allows mon…
The theoretical description of the nanostructured Pb(Fe1/2Ta1/2)x(Zr1/2Ti1/2)1-xO3 (PFTx-PZT(1-x)) and Pb(Fe1/2Nb1/2)x(Zr1/2Ti1/2)1-xO3 (PFNx-PZT(1-x)) intriguing ferromagnetic, ferroelectric and magnetoelectric properties at temperatures higher than 100 K are absent to date. The goal of this work is to propose the theoretical description of the physical nature and the mechanisms of the aforementioned properties, including room temperature ferromagnetism, phase diagram dependence on the composition x with a special attention to the multiferroic properties at room temperature, including anomalo…
Magnetic skyrmions are chiral spin structures with a whirling configuration. Their topological properties, nanometer size and the fact that they can be moved by small current densities have opened a new paradigm for the manipulation of magnetisation at the nanoscale. To date, chiral skyrmion structures have been experimentally demonstrated only in bulk materials and in epitaxial ultrathin films and under external magnetic field or at low temperature. Here, we report on the observation of stable skyrmions in sputtered ultrathin Pt/Co/MgO nanostructures, at room temperature and zero applied magn…
First-principals calculations show that up-spin and down-spin carriers are accumulating adjacent to opposite surfaces of BiFeO3(BFO) film with applying external bias. The spin carriers are equal in magnitude and opposite in direction, and down-spin carriers move to the direction opposing the external electric field while up-spin ones along the field direction. This novel spin transfer properties make BFO film an intriguing candidate for application in spin capacitor and BFO-based multiferroic field-effect device.
We report broadband ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) measurements based on a coplanar waveguide (CPW) of ultrathin magnetic film structures that comprise in-plane/out-of-plane decoupled layers deposited on nonmagnetic buffer layers of various thickness or other buffer structures with a diverse sheet resistance. We show that the excitation of the fundamental mode can be substantially (up to 10 times) enhanced in the structures deposited on buffer layers with a low sheet resistance in comparison to the structures deposited on thin or weakly conducting buffer layers. The results are analyzed in term…
Metal powders with hierarchical nanostructures are always designed and fabricated by dealloying with or without combination of other manufacturing processes. However, they are mainly nanoporous metal powder and its derivations, and their monotonous nanostructures restrict their applications, so metal powders with novel nanostructures should be explored further for various applications. Herein, high energy mechanical milling and dealloying can be combined together for fabricating mass-produced metal powders with controllable nanostructures. As an example, a nanograins-attached and ultrathin Cu …
First-principles density-functional theory calculations show switching magnetization by 90 degree can be achieved in ultrathin BFO film by applying external electric-field. Up-spin carriers appear to the surface with positive field while down-spin ones to the negative field surface, arising from the redistribution of Fe-t2g orbital. The half-metallic behavior of Fe-3d states in the surface of R phase film makes it a promising candidate for AFM/FM bilayer heterostructure possessing electric-field tunable FM magnetization reversal and opens a new way towards designing spintronic multiferroics. Bulk bismuth presents outstanding optical properties, such as a giant infrared refractive index (n near 10) and a negative ultraviolet visible permittivity induced by giant interband electronic transitions. Although such properties are very appealing for applications in nanophotonics, the dielectric function of bismuth nanostructures has been scarcely studied. Here, we determine by spectroscopic ellipsometry the far infrared to ultraviolet dielectric function of pulsed laser deposited bismuth thin films with nominal thickness tBi varied from near 10 nm to several tens of nm. For tBi above 15 n…
We examine different models and methods for studying finite-temperature magnetic hysteresis in nanoparticles and ultrathin films. This includes micromagnetic results for the hysteresis of a single magnetic nanoparticle which is misaligned with respect to the magnetic field. We present results from both a representation of the particle as a one-dimensional array of magnetic rotors, and from full micromagnetic simulations. The results are compared with the Stoner-Wohlfarth model. Results of kinetic Monte Carlo simulations of ultrathin films are also presented. In addition, we discuss other topic…
We show that the spin-orbit torque induced magnetization switching in nanomagnets presenting Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DMI) interaction is governed by a chiral domain nucleation at the edges. The nucleation is induced by the DMI and the applied in-plane magnetic field followed by domain wall propagation. Our micromagnetic simulations show that the DC switching current can be defined as the edge nucleation current, which decreases strongly with increasing amplitude of the DMI. This description allows us to build a simple analytical model to quantitatively predict the switching current. We find tha…
We report local probe investigations of the magnetic interaction between BiFeO3 films and a ferromagnetic Co0.9Fe0.1 layer. Within the constraints of intralayer exchange coupling in the Co0.9Fe0.1, the multiferroic imprint in the ferromagnet results in a collinear arrangement of the local magnetization and the in-plane BiFeO3 ferroelectric polarization. The magnetic anisotropy is uniaxial, and an in-plane effective coupling field of order 10 mT is derived. Measurements as a function of multiferroic layer thickness show that the influence of the multiferroic layer on the magnetic layer becomes …
The instability of ferroelectric ordering in ultra-thin films is one of the most important fundamental issues pertaining realization of a number of electronic devices with enhanced functionality, such as ferroelectric and multiferroic tunnel junctions or ferroelectric field effect transistors. In this paper, we investigate the polarization state of archetypal ultrathin (several nanometres) ferroelectric heterostructures: epitaxial single-crystalline BaTiO$_3$ films sandwiched between the most habitual perovskite electrodes, SrRuO$_3$, on top of the most used perovskite substrate, SrTiO$_3$. We…
The realization of multiferroics in nanostructures, combined with a large electric dipole and ferromagnetic ordering, could lead to new applications, such as high-density multi-state data storage. Although multiferroics have been broadly studied for decades, ferromagnetic ferroelectricity is rarely explored, especially in two-dimensional (2D) systems. Here we report the discovery of 2D ferromagnetic ferroelectricity in layered transition metal halide systems. On the basis of first-principles calculations, we reveal that charged CrBr3 monolayer exhibits in-plane multiferroicity, which is ensure…
We report on the functionalization of multiferroic BiFeO3 epitaxial films for spintronics. A first example is provided by the use of ultrathin layers of BiFeO3 as tunnel barriers in magnetic tunnel junctions with La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 and Co electrodes. In such structures, a positive tunnel magnetoresistance up to 30% is obtained at low temperature. A second example is the exploitation of the antiferromagnetic spin structure of a BiFeO3 film to induce a sizeable (~60 Oe) exchange bias on a ferromagnetic film of CoFeB, at room temperature. Remarkably, the exchange bias effect is robust upon magnetic f…
When ultrathin metal films are subjected to multiple cycles of rapid melting and resolidification by a ns pulsed laser, spatially correlated interfacial nanostructures can result from a competition among several possible thin film self-organizing processes. Here we investigate self-organization and the ensuing length scales when Co films (1-8 nm thick) on SiO_{\text{2}} surfaces are repeatedly and rapidly melted by non-uniform (interference) laser irradiation. Pattern evolution produces nanowires, which eventually break-up into nanoparticles exhibiting spatial order in the nearest neighbor spa…
Magnetic skyrmions are topological spin structures having immense potential for energy efficient spintronic devices. However, observations of skyrmions at room temperature are limited to patterned nanostructures. Here, we report the observation of stable skyrmions in unpatterned Ta/Co2FeAl(CFA)/MgO thin film heterostructures at room temperature and in zero external magnetic field employing magnetic force microscopy. The skyrmions are observed in a trilayer structure comprised of heavy metal (HM)/ferromagnet (FM)/Oxide interfaces which result in strong interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interact…
Magnetic anisotropy is a key parameter of magnetic materials as it decides the response in the presence of an external magnetic field. The artificial tailoring of magnetic anisotropy by manipulating surface and interface morphology is attracting widespread interest for its application in spintronic and magnetic memory devices. In this perspective, the primary focus of this thesis has been inducing and tailoring magnetic anisotropy in thin film-based systems via the engineering of structure and surface/interfacial morphology. For this purpose, instead of multistep, expensive lithographic techni…
Perpendicular exchange bias (EB), which combines the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and the ferromagnetic (FM) - antiferromagnetic (AFM) exchange coupling, is extremely important in the high-density AFM spintronics. However, the effective modulation of EB remains challenging, since the alternant spins at the AFM/FM interface are strongly pinned by the AFM layer. Voltage tuning of EB through the magnetoelectric coupling provides a potential way to achieve a rapid magnetization switching in an energy-efficient manner. Nevertheless, the interfacial strain mediation of perpendicular EB induced …
2D-layered tin (II) oxide (SnO) has recently emerged as a promising bipolar channel material for thin-film transistors and complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor devices. In this work, we present a first-principles investigation of the mechanical properties of ultrathin SnO, as well as the electronic implications of tensile strain ($ε$) under both uniaxial and biaxial conditions. Bulk-to-monolayer transition is found to significantly lower the Young's and shear moduli of SnO, highlighting the importance of interlayer Sn-Sn bonds in preserving structural integrity. Unprecedentedly, few-layer S…
A mathematical model is developed to analyze the growth/decay rate of surface perturbations of an ultrathin metal film on an amorphous substrate (SiO_{2}). The formulation combines the approach of Mullins [J. Appl. Phys. v30, 77, 1959] for bulk substrates, in which curvature-driven mass transport and surface deformation can occur by surface/volume diffusion and evaporation-condensation processes, with that of Spencer et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. v67, 26, 1991] to describe solid state transport in thin films under epitaxial strain. The model is applied to study the relative rate of solid state mass…
Epitaxial strain plays an important role in determining physical properties of perovskite ferroelectric oxide thin films. However, it is very challenging to directly measure properties such as polarization in ultrathin strained films using traditional sandwich capacitor devices, because of high leakage current. We employed a planar electrode device with different crystallographical orientations between electrodes along different electric field orientation to directly measure the in-plane polarization-electric field (P-E) hysteresis loops in fully strained thin films. At high misfit strains suc…
Through ${in~situ}$ photoemission spectroscopy, we investigated the change in the electronic and crystal structures of dimensionality-controlled VO$_2$ films coherently grown on TiO$_2$(001) substrates. In the nanostructured films, the balance between the instabilities of a bandlike Peierls transition and a Mott transition is controlled as a function of thickness. The characteristic spectral change associated with temperature-driven metal-insulator transition in VO$_2$ thick films holds down to 1.5 nm (roughly corresponding to five V atoms along the [001] direction), whereas VO$_2$ films of le…
Engraving trenches on the surfaces of ultrathin ferroelectric (FE) films and superlattices promises control over the orientation and direction of FE domain walls (DWs). Through exploiting the phenomenon of DW-surface trench (ST) parallel alignment, systems where DWs are known for becoming electrical conductors could now become useful nanocircuits using only standard lithographical techniques. Despite this clear application, the microscopic mechanism responsible for the alignment phenomenon has remained elusive. Using ultrathin PbTiO$_3$ films as a model system, we explore this mechanism with l…
In the field of atomically thin 2D materials, oxides are relatively unexplored in spite of the large number of layered oxide structures amenable to exfoliation. There is an increasing interest in ultra-thin film oxide nanostructures from applied points of view. In this perspective paper, recent progress in understanding the fundamental properties of 2D oxides is discussed. Two families of 2D oxides are considered: (1) van der Waals bonded layered materials in which the transition metal is in its highest valence state (represented by V$_2$O$_5$ and MoO$_3$) and (2) layered materials with ionic …
An application of the radiolysis method using X-ray synchrotron beam is developed as a novel approach to the synthesis of metal-organic films with controlled shapes and thickness. We demonstrate that a Langmuir monolayer deposited onto a silver ion-containing subphase, irradiated by an incident beam impinging below the critical angle for total reflection, induces the synthesis of a stable nanostructured silver-organic ultrathin film at the air-water interface. The X-ray scattering is also used to monitor in situ the structure of the silver layer during the synthesis process. The layer is obser…
Metastable manganite perovskites displaying the antiferromagnetic so-called E-phase are predicted to be multiferroic. Due to the need of high-pressures for the synthesis of this phase, this prediction has only been confirmed in bulk HoMnO3. Here we report on the growth and characterization of YbMnO3 perovskite thin films grown under epitaxial strain. Highly-oriented thin films, with thickness down to ~30nm, can be obtained showing magneto-dielectric coupling and magnetic responses as those expected for the E-phase. We observe that the magnetic properties depart from the bulk behavior only in t…
Ferroics and multiferroics are unique objects for fundamental physical research of complex nonlinear processes and phenomena, which occur in them in micro and nanoscale. The review discuss and analyze that the thickness of the strained films, the size and shape of the ferroic and multiferroic nanoparticles are unique tools…
Various bandstructure engineering methods have been studied to improve the performance of graphitic transparent conductors; however none demonstrated an increase of optical transmittance in the visible range. Here we measure in situ optical transmittance spectra and electrical transport properties of ultrathin-graphite (3-60 graphene layers) simultaneously via electrochemical lithiation/delithiation. Upon intercalation we observe an increase of both optical transmittance (up to twofold) and electrical conductivity (up to two orders of magnitude), strikingly different from other materials. Tran…
Ultrathin passive films effectively prevent the chemical attack of stainless steel grades in corrosive environments; their stability critically depends on the interplay between structure and chemistry of the constituents Fe-Cr-Mo. In particular, nanoscale inhomogeneities along the surface can have a tremendous impact on material failure, but are yet barely understood. Addressing a stainless-type glass-forming Fe50Cr15Mo14C15B6 alloy and utilizing a combination of complementary high-resolution analytical techniques, we relate near-atomistic insight into different gradual nanostructures with tim…
Magnetic skyrmions are promising candidates as information carriers in a new generation of memories. How to generate and stabilize skyrmions is essential for their successful application to technology. Here we theoretically demonstrate that arrays of skyrmions can be imprinted in ultrathin ferromagnetic films in large numbers by bringing a magnetic nanostructured template close to the film. Two kind of templates, allowed by present-day nanotechnologies, are studied: arrays of ferromagnetic nanorods and superconducting vortices. Skyrmions are generated when exposing magnetic films to the templa…
The dielectric properties of Fe$_{3}$O$_{4}$ magnetic nanoparticles with an insulating coating layer of SiO$_{2}$ were investigated. At high temperatures, the changes of the dielectric constant and loss induced by the magnetic field are opposite in sign and strongly frequency-dependent, which originates from extrinsic magnetodielectric coupling-the Maxwell-Wagner effect combined with magnetoresistance. And the interface defects leads to the obvious hysteresis phenomena observed in the measurements. On the other hand, the strong coupling of dielectric and magnetic properties at low temperatures…
Thin Yttrium Iron Garnet (YIG) is a promising material for integrated magnonics. In order to introduce YIG into nanofabrication processes it is necessary to fabricate very thin YIG films with a thickness well below 100 nm while retaining the extraordinary magnetic properties of the material, especially its long magnon lifetime and spin wave propagation length. Here, we give a brief introduction into the topic and we review and discuss the various results published over the last decade in this area. Especially for ultrathin films it turns out that pulsed layer deposition and sputtering are the …
