Ultrathin films of the itinerant ferromagnet SrRuO$_3$ were studied using transport and magnto-optic polar Kerr effect. We find that below 4 monolayers the films become insulating and their magnetic character changes as they loose their simple ferromagnetic behavior. We observe a strong reduction in the magnetic moment which for 3 monolayers and below lies in the plane of the film. Exchange-bias behavior is observed below the critical thickness, and may point to induced antiferromagnetism in contact with ferromagnetic regions.
In quantum matters hosting electron-electron correlation and spin-orbit coupling, spatial inhomogeneities, arising from competing ground states, can be essential for determining and understanding topological properties. A prominent example is Hall anomalies observed in SrRuO3 films, which were interpreted in terms of either magnetic skyrmion-induced topological Hall effect (THE) or inhomogeneous anomalous Hall effect (AHE). To clarify this ambiguity, we systematically investigated the AHE of SrRuO3 ultrathin films with controllable inhomogeneities in film thickness (tSRO). By harnessing the st…
SrRuO$_3$ (SRO) films are known to exhibit insulating behavior as their thickness approaches four unit cells. We employ electron energy$-$loss (EEL) spectroscopy to probe the spatially resolved electronic structures of both insulating and conducting SRO to correlate them with the metal$-$insulator transition (MIT). Importantly, the central layer of the ultrathin insulating film exhibits distinct features from the metallic SRO. Moreover, EEL near edge spectra adjacent to the SrTiO$_3$ (STO) substrate or to the capping layer are remarkably similar to those of STO. The site$-$projected density of…
We observed a hump-like feature in Hall effects of SrRuO$_3$ ultrathin films, and systematically investigated it with controlling thicknesses, temperatures and magnetic fields. The hump-like feature is extremely stable, even surviving as a magnetic field is tilted by as much as 85$^\circ$. Based on the atomic-level structural analysis of a SrRuO$_3$ ultrathin film with a theoretical calculation, we reveal that atomic rumplings at the thin-film surface enhance Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, which can generate stable chiral spin textures and a hump-like Hall effect. Moreover, temperature dep…
The electronic structure of SrRuO$_3$ thin film with thickness from 50 to 1 unit cell (u.c.) is investigated via the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) technique at the O K-edge to unravel the intriguing interplay of orbital and charge degrees of freedom. We found that orbital-selective quantum confinement effect (QCE) induces the splitting of Ru $4d$ orbitals. At the same time, we observed a clear suppression of the electron-hole continuum across the metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) occurring at the 4 u.c. sample. From these two clear observations we conclude that QCE gives rise to…
A notion of the Berry phase is a powerful means to unravel the non-trivial role of topology in various novel phenomena observed in chiral magnetic materials and structures. A celebrated example is the intrinsic anomalous Hall effect (AHE) driven by the non-vanishing Berry phase in the momentum space. As the AHE is highly dependent on details of the band structure near the Fermi edge, the Berry phase and AHE can be altered in thin films whose chemical potential is tunable by dimensionality and disorder. Here, we demonstrate that in ultrathin SrRuO$_3$ films the Berry phase can be effectively ma…
SrRuO3 (SRO) is an itinerant ferromagnet with strong coupling between the charge, spin, and lattice degrees of freedom. This strong coupling suggests that the electronic and magnetic behaviors of SRO are highly susceptible to changes in the lattice distortion. Here we show how the spin interaction and resultant magnon formation change with the modification in the crystallographic orientation. We fabricated SRO epitaxial thin films with (100), (110), and (111) surface orientations, to systematically modulate the spin interaction and spin dimensionality. The reduced spin dimensionality and enhan…
The electro-magnetic properties of ultrathin epitaxial ruthenate films have long been the subject of debate. Here we combine experimental with theoretical investigations of (SrTiO3)5-(SrRuO3)n-(SrTiO3)5 (STO5-SROn-STO5) heterostructures with n = 1 and 2 unit cells, including extensive atomic-resolution scanning-transmission-electron-microscopy imaging, electron-energy-loss-spectroscopy chemical mapping, as well as transport and magneto-transport measurements. The experimental data demonstrate that the STO5-SRO2-STO5 heterostructure is stoichiometric, metallic, and ferromagnetic with TC ~ 128 K…
Perovskite SrRuO$_3$ is a prototypical itinerant ferromagnet which allows interface engineering of its electronic and magnetic properties. We report synthesis and investigation of atomically flat artificial multilayers of SrRuO$_3$ with the spin-orbit semimetal SrIrO$_3$ in combination with band-structure calculations with a Hubbard $U$ term and topological analysis. They reveal an electronic reconstruction and emergence of flat Ru-4d$_{xz}$ bands near the interface, ferromagnetic interlayer coupling and negative Berry-curvature contribution to the anomalous Hall effect. We analyze the Hall ef…
Here, we study the electrical transport and specific heat in 4$d$ based ferromagnetic material SrRuO$_3$ and its Ti substituted SrRu$_{1-x}$Ti$_x$O$_3$ series ($x$ $\le$ 0.7). The SrRuO$_3$ is a metal and shows itinerant ferromagnetism with transition temperature $T_c$ $\sim$ 160 K. The nonmagnetic Ti$^{4+}$ (3$d^0$) substitution would not only weaken the active Ru-O-Ru channel but is also expected to tune the electronic density and electron correlation effect. A metal to insulator transition has been observed around $x$ $\sim$ 0.4. The nature of charge transport in paramagnetic-metallic state…
Topological spin textures in an itinerant ferromagnet, SrRuO$_3$ is studied combining Hall transport measurements and numerical simulations. We observe characteristic signatures of the Topological Hall Effect associated with skyrmions. A relatively large thickness of our films and absence of heavy metal layers make the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction an unlikely source of these topological spin textures. Additionally, the transport anomalies exhibit an unprecedented robustness to magnetic field tilting and temperature. Our numerical simulations suggest that this unconventional be…
Quantum confinement leads to the emergence of several magnon modes in ultrathin layered magnetic structures. We probe the lifetime of these quantum confined modes in a model system composed of three atomic layers of Co grown on different surfaces. We demonstrate that the quantum confined magnons exhibit nonlinear decay rates, which strongly depend on the mode number, in sharp contrast to what is assumed in the classical dynamics. Combining the experimental results with those of linear-response density functional calculations we provide a quantitative explanation for this nonlinear damping effe…
SrRuO$_3$ presents a rare example of ferromagnetism among the 4$d$ based oxides. While the nature of magnetic state in SrRuO$_3$ is mostly believed to be of itinerant type, recent studies suggest a coexistence of both itinerant and localized model of magnetism in this material. Here, we have investigated the evolution of magnetic state in doped SrRu$_{1-x}$Ti$_x$O$_3$ through studying the critical behavior using standard techniques such as, modified Arrott plot, Kouvel-Fisher plot and critical isotherm analysis across the magnetic transition temperature $T_c$. The substitution of nonmagnetic T…
One of the key technologies in spintronics is to tame spin-orbit coupling (SOC) that links spin and motion of electrons, giving rise to intriguing magneto-transport properties in itinerant magnets. Prominent examples of such SOC-based phenomena are anomalous and topological Hall effects. However, controlling them by electric field has remained unachieved since electric field tends to be screened in itinerant magnets. Here we demonstrate that both anomalous and topological Hall effects can be modulated by electric field in oxide heterostructures consisting of ferromagnetic SrRuO$_{3}$ and nonma…
A study of the ferromagnetic transition of $SrRuO_3$ in nanometer thick bilayers with $YBa_2Cu_3O_y$, $La_{1.88}Sr_{0.12}CuO_{4-y}$, Au and Cr: Signature of injected carriers in the pseudogap regime
We demonstrate that the cluster-glass state emerges as ferromagnetic quantum criticality is avoided in itinerant ferromagnet Sr1-x(La0.5K0.5)xRuO3. In this compound, the ferromagnetic order is suppressed by increasing x, and then disappears at the critical concentration: x=0.5. In this x range, the present study reveals that no prominent feature is ascribed to the quantum critical fluctuations in specific heat. Instead, ac magnetic susceptibility exhibits a broad peak due to spontaneous spin freezing, and the peak temperature depends significantly on the frequency of the applied ac magnetic fi…

Magnetism and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) are two quintessential ingredients underlying novel topological transport phenomena in itinerant ferromagnets. When spin-polarized bands support nodal points/lines with band degeneracy that can be lifted by SOC, the nodal structures become a source of Berry curvature; this leads to a large anomalous Hall effect (AHE). Contrary to three-dimensional systems that naturally host nodal points/lines, two-dimensional (2D) systems can possess stable nodal structures only when proper crystalline symmetry exists. Here we show that 2D spin-polarized band structures…
