Topological spin textures in an itinerant ferromagnet, SrRuO$_3$ is studied combining Hall transport measurements and numerical simulations. We observe characteristic signatures of the Topological Hall Effect associated with skyrmions. A relatively large thickness of our films and absence of heavy metal layers make the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction an unlikely source of these topological spin textures. Additionally, the transport anomalies exhibit an unprecedented robustness to magnetic field tilting and temperature. Our numerical simulations suggest that this unconventional behavior results from magnetic bubbles with skyrmion topology stabilized by magnetodipolar interactions in an unexpected region of parameter space.
We study the magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) in SrRuO$_3$ thin films, uncovering wide regimes of wavelength, temperature, and magnetic field where the Kerr rotation is not simply proportional to the magnetization but instead displays two-component behavior. One component of the MOKE signal tracks the average magnetization, while the second "anomalous" component bears a resemblance to anomalies in the Hall resistivity which have been previously reported in skyrmion materials. We present a theory showing that the MOKE anomalies arise from the non-monotonic relation between the Kerr angle and …
In quantum matters hosting electron-electron correlation and spin-orbit coupling, spatial inhomogeneities, arising from competing ground states, can be essential for determining and understanding topological properties. A prominent example is Hall anomalies observed in SrRuO3 films, which were interpreted in terms of either magnetic skyrmion-induced topological Hall effect (THE) or inhomogeneous anomalous Hall effect (AHE). To clarify this ambiguity, we systematically investigated the AHE of SrRuO3 ultrathin films with controllable inhomogeneities in film thickness (tSRO). By harnessing the st…
Electron transport coupled with magnetism has attracted attention over the years as exemplified in anomalous Hall effect due to a Berry phase in momentum space. Another type of unconventional Hall effect -- topological Hall effect, originating from the real-space Berry phase, has recently become of great importance in the context of magnetic skyrmions. We have observed topological Hall effect in bilayers consisting of ferromagnetic SrRuO$_3$ and paramagnetic SrIrO$_3$ over a wide region of both temperature and magnetic field. The topological term rapidly decreases with the thickness of SrRuO$_…
Magnetic skyrmions in 2D chiral magnets are in general stabilized by a combination of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and external magnetic field. Here, we show that skyrmions can also be stabilized in twisted moiré superlattices in the absence of an external magnetic field. Our setup consists of a 2D ferromagnetic layer twisted on top of an antiferromagnetic substrate. The coupling between the ferromagnetic layer and the substrate generates an effective alternating exchange field. We find a large region of skyrmion crystal phase when the length scales of the moiré periodicity and skyrmions …
Magnetic skyrmions are vortex-like topological spin textures often observed to form a triangular-lattice skyrmion crystal in structurally chiral magnets with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Recently $β$-Mn structure-type Co-Zn-Mn alloys were identified as a new class of chiral magnet to host such skyrmion crystal phases, while $β$-Mn itself is known as hosting an elemental geometrically frustrated spin liquid. Here we report the intermediate composition system Co$_7$Zn$_7$Mn$_6$ to be a unique host of two disconnected, thermal-equilibrium topological skyrmion phases; one is a conventional s…
The Hall effect in SrRuO$_3$ thin-films near the thickness limit for ferromagnetism shows an extra peak in addition to the ordinary and anomalous Hall effects. This extra peak has been attributed to a topological Hall effect due to two-dimensional skyrmions in the film around the coercive field; however, the sign of the anomalous Hall effect in SrRuO$_3$ can change as a function of saturation magnetization. Here we report Hall peaks in SrRuO$_3$ in which volumetric magnetometry measurements and magnetic force microscopy indicate that the peaks result from the superposition of two anomalous Hal…
Motivated by a recent magnetization reversal experiment on a TbFeCo thin film, we study a topological excitation in the anisotropic nonlinear sigma model together with the Zeeman and magnetic dipole-dipole interactions. Dipole-dipole interactions turn a ferromagnet into a frustrated spin system, which allows a nontrivial spin texture such as a giant skyrmion. We derive an analytic formula for the skyrmion radius. The radius is controllable by the external magnetic field. It is intriguing that a skyrmion may have already been observed as a magnetic domain. A salient feature is that a single sky…
Topologically stable structures include vortices in a wide variety of matter, such as skyrmions in ferro- and antiferromagnets, and hedgehog point defects in liquid crystals and ferromagnets. These are characterized by integer-valued topological quantum numbers. In this context, closed surfaces are a prominent subject of study as they form a link between fundamental mathematical theorems and real physical systems. Here we perform an analysis on the topology and stability of equilibrium magnetization states for a thin spherical shell with easy-axis anisotropy in normal directions. Skyrmion solu…
Investigating the effects of the complex magnetic interactions on the formation of nontrivial magnetic phases enables a better understanding of magnetic materials. Moreover, an effective method to systematically control those interactions and phases could be extensively utilized in spintronic devices. SrRuO3 heterostructures function as a suitable material system to investigate the complex magnetic interactions and the resultant formation of topological magnetic phases, as the heterostructuring approach provides an accessible controllability to modulate the magnetic interactions. In this study…
Magnetic skyrmions are whirls in the magnetization whose topological winding number promises stability against thermal fluctuations and defects. They can only decay via singular spin configurations. We analyze the corresponding energy barriers of skyrmions in a magnetic monolayer for two distinct stabilization mechanisms, i.e., Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) and competing interactions. Based on our numerically calculated collapse paths on an atomic lattice, we derive analytic expressions for the saddle point textures and energy barriers of large skyrmions. The sign of the spin stiffne…
We report small-angle neutron scattering studies of the lacunar spinel GaV$_4$S$_8$, which reveal the long-wavelength magnetic states to be cycloidally modulated. This provides direct support for the formation of Néel-type skyrmions recently claimed to exist in this compound. In striking contrast with all other bulk skyrmion host materials, upon cooling the modulated magnetic states transform into a ferromagnetic state. These results indicate all of the modulated states in GaV$_4$S$_8$, including the skyrmion state, gain their stability from thermal fluctuations, while at lower temperature the…
Magnetic skyrmions are topological solitons with a nanoscale winding spin texture that hold promise for spintronics applications. Until now, skyrmions have been observed in a variety of magnets that exhibit nearly parallel alignment for the neighbouring spins, but theoretically, skyrmions with anti-parallel neighbouring spins are also possible. The latter, antiferromagnetic skyrmions, may allow more flexible control compared to the conventional ferromagnetic skyrmions. Here, by combining neutron scattering and Monte Carlo simulations, we show that a fractional antiferromagnetic skyrmion lattic…
The Dzyaloshinkii-Moriya (DM) interaction that originates from relativistic spin-orbit coupling in noncentrosymmetric magnets is a source of topological spin textures. We theoretically investigate the possibility of a skyrmion crystal by focusing on the role of the out-of-plane DM interaction that is different from the polar- and chiral-type DM interaction. By performing the simulated annealing for a spin model on a triangular lattice belonging to the $D_{3h}$ point group, we construct low-temperature magnetic phase diagrams in an applied magnetic field. As a result, we find the instability to…
Magnetic structures and their stability of the multiple helical spin density waves (MHSDW) and related magnetic skyrmions in itinerant electron system have been investigated on the basis of both the phenomenological and microscopic theories. It is shown by using the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory and the Application Visualization System (AVS) that the magnetic skyrmion structures emerge as a MHSDW and can be stabilized in itinerant electron system on the fcc lattice even if there is no Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Moreover, by using the generalized Hartree-Fock theory for the Hubbard model,…
Perovskite SrRuO$_3$ is a prototypical itinerant ferromagnet which allows interface engineering of its electronic and magnetic properties. We report synthesis and investigation of atomically flat artificial multilayers of SrRuO$_3$ with the spin-orbit semimetal SrIrO$_3$ in combination with band-structure calculations with a Hubbard $U$ term and topological analysis. They reveal an electronic reconstruction and emergence of flat Ru-4d$_{xz}$ bands near the interface, ferromagnetic interlayer coupling and negative Berry-curvature contribution to the anomalous Hall effect. We analyze the Hall ef…
Topological transport phenomena in magnetic materials are a major topic of current condensed matter research. One of the most widely studied phenomena is the ``topological Hall effect'' (THE), which is generated via spin-orbit interactions between conduction electrons and topological spin textures such as skyrmions. We report a comprehensive set of Hall effect and magnetization measurements on epitaxial films of the prototypical ferromagnetic metal SrRuO$_3$ the magnetic and transport properties of which were systematically modulated by varying the concentration of Ru vacancies. We observe Hal…
When two magnetic skyrmions - whirl-like, topologically protected quasiparticles - form a bound pair, a biskyrmion state with a topological charge of $N_\mathrm{Sk}=\pm 2$ is constituted. Recently, especially the case of two partially overlapping skyrmions has brought about great research interest. Since for its formation the individual skyrmions need to posses opposite in-plane magnetizations, such a biskyrmion cannot be stabilized by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya-interaction (DMI), which is the interaction that typically stabilizes skyrmions in non-centrosymmetric materials and at interfaces. He…
We theoretically investigate the origin of the square-type skyrmion crystal in centrosymmetric itinerant magnets, motivated from the recent experimental finding in GdRu$_2$Si$_2$ [N. D. Khanh $\mathit{et}$ $\mathit{al.}$, Nat. Nanotech. $\mathbf{15}$, 444 (2020)]. By simulated annealing for an effective spin model derived from the Kondo lattice model on a square lattice, we find that a square skyrmion crystal composed of a superposition of two spin helices is stabilized in a magnetic field by synergy between the positive biquadratic, bond-dependent anisotropic, and easy-axis anisotropic intera…
We theoretically report an instability toward a skyrmion crystal in centrosymmetric magnets under hexagonal and trigonal single-ion anisotropy. The results are obtained for a minimal spin model with a crystal-dependent single-ion anisotropy on a triangular lattice by performing simulated annealing. By constructing magnetic phase diagrams in the presence of six different types of single-ion anisotropy while changing the amplitudes of external magnetic field and single-ion anisotropy in a systematic way, we find that the hexagonal and trigonal single-ion anisotropy becomes a source of the skyrmi…
Magnetic skyrmions have been the focus of intense research due to their unique qualities which result from their topological protections. Previous work on Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$, the only known insulating multiferroic skyrmion material, has shown that chemical substitution alters the skyrmion phase. We chemically substitute Zn, Ag, and S into powdered Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$ to study the effect on the magnetic phase diagram. In both the Ag and the S substitutions, we find that the skyrmion phase is stabilized over a larger temperature range, as determined via magnetometry and small-angle neutron scattering (SA…
The magnetic skyrmion with the topological number of unity ($Q=1$) is a well-known nanometric swirling spin structure in the nonlinear $σ$ model with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Here, we show that magnetic skyrmion with the topological number of two ($Q=2$) can be created and stabilized by applying vertical spin-polarized current though it cannot exist as a static stable excitation. Magnetic skyrmion with $Q=2$ is a nonequilibrium dynamic object, subsisting on a balance between the energy injection from the current and the energy dissipation by the Gilbert damping. Once it is create…
We derive the quantization of magnetic helicity in the solid-state and demonstrate tunable macroscopic quantum tunneling, coherence, and oscillation for a skyrmion spin texture stabilized in frustrated magnets. We also discuss the parameter space for the experimental realization of quantum effects. Typically, for a skyrmion of 5 nm radius, quantum tunneling between two macroscopic states with distinct helicities occurs with an inverse escape rate within seconds below 100 mK, and an energy splitting in the MHz regime. Feasibility of quantum tunneling of an ensemble of magnetic spins inspires ne…
Several challenges in designing an operational Skyrmion racetrack memory are well-known. Among those challenges, a few contradictions can be identified if researchers were to rely only on metallic materials. Hence, expanding the exploration on Skyrmion Physics into oxide materials is essential to bridge the contradicting gap. In this topical review, we first briefly revise the theories and criteria involved in stabilizing and manipulating Skymions, followed by studying the behaviors of dipolar-stabilized magnetic bubbles. Next, we explore the properties of multiferroic Skyrmions with magnetoel…
Curvilinear nanomagnets can support magnetic skyrmions stabilized at a local curvature without any intrinsic chiral interactions. Here, we propose a new mechanism to stabilize chiral Néel skyrmion states relying on the \textit{gradient} of curvature. We illustrate our approach with an example of a magnetic thin film with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy shaped as a circular indentation. We show that in addition to the topologically trivial ground state, there are two skyrmion states with winding numbers $\pm 1$ and a skyrmionium state with a winding number $0$. These chiral states are formed …
The recent experimental confirmation of a transformation between meron and skyrmion topological spin textures in the chiral magnet Co$_8$Zn$_9$Mn$_3$ [S.-Z. Lin et al., Phys. Rev. B 91, 224407 (2015); X. Z. Yu et al., Nature 564, 95 (2018)] confirms that the skyrmion crystals discovered in 2009 [S. Mühlbauer et al., Science 323, 915 (2009)] are just the tip of the iceberg. Crystals of topological textures, including skyrmions, merons, vortices, and monopoles, can be stabilized by combining simple physical ingredients, such as lattice symmetry, frustration, and spin anisotropy. The current chal…
Magnetic skyrmions in chiral-lattice ferromagnets are currently attracting enormous research interest because of their potential applications in spintronic devices. However, they emerge in bulk specimens only in a narrow window of temperature and magnetic field. This limited stability regime is recognized as an obstacle to technical applications. Recent experiments demonstrated that the thermodynamic stability of magnetic skyrmions is enhanced or suppressed by the application of a uniaxial strain depending on its axial direction in bulk chiral-lattice ferromagnets MnSi [Y. Nii et al., Nat. Com…
We present a microscopic electronic description of how antiskyrmions can be stabilized in a Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupled magnetic metal. Furthermore, we show that the antiskyrmions can be tuned into Bloch skyrmions via a change in sign of hopping integral. The results are based on the state of the art hybrid Monte Carlo simulations. Origin of such topological textures is understood via an effective spin-only model. Our results uncover a novel connection between two very distinct topological spin textures of immense current interest, and present a microscopic explanation of skyrmion formation…
We theoretically study spin and charge excitations of skyrmion crystals stabilized by conduction-electron-mediated magnetic interactions via spin-charge coupling in a centrosymmetric Kondo-lattice model by large-scale spin-dynamics simulations combined with the kernel polynomial method. We reveal clear segregation of spin and charge excitation channels and nonreciprocal nature of the spin excitations governed by the Fermi-surface geometry, which are unique to the skyrmion crystals in centrosymmetric itinerant hosts and can be a source of novel physical phenomena.
Skyrmions are nanometric spin whirls that can be stabilized in magnets lacking inversion symmetry. The properties of isolated skyrmions embedded in a ferromagnetic background have been intensively studied. We show that single skyrmions and clusters of skyrmions can also form in the helical phase and investigate theoretically their energetics and dynamics. The helical background provides natural one-dimensional channels along which a skyrmion can move rapidly. In contrast to skyrmions in ferromagnets, the skymion-skyrmion interaction has a strong attractive component and thus skyrmions tend to …
We demonstrate a fast numerical method of theoretical studies of skyrmion lattice or spiral order in magnetic materials with Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction. The method is based on the Fourier expansion of the magnetization combined with a minimization of the free energy functional of the magnetic material in Fourier space, yielding the optimal configuration of the system for any given set of parameters. We employ a Lagrange multiplier technique in order to satisfy micromagnetic constraints. We apply this method to a system that exhibits, depending on the parameter choice, ferromagnetic, skyr…
Recent developments have led to an explosion of activity on skyrmions in three-dimensional (3D) chiral magnets. Experiments have directly probed these topological spin textures, revealed their nontrivial properties, and led to suggestions for novel applications. However, in 3D the skyrmion crystal phase is observed only in a narrow region of the temperature-field phase diagram. We show here, using a general analysis based on symmetry, that skyrmions are much more readily stabilized in two-dimensional (2D) systems with Rashba spin-orbit coupling. This enhanced stability arises from the competit…
We present a comprehensive theory of the magnetic phases in twisted bilayer Cr-trihalides through a combination of first-principles calculations and atomistic simulations. We show that the stacking-dependent interlayer exchange leads to an effective moiré field that is mostly ferromagnetic with antiferromagnetic patches. A wide range of noncollinear magnetic phases can be stabilized as a function of the twist angle and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction as a result of the competing interlayer antiferromagnetic coupling and the energy cost for forming domain walls. In particular, we demonstrate …
We study the evolution of the magnetic phase diagram of Mn$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$Ge alloys with concentration $x$ ($0 \leq x \leq 0.3$) by small-angle neutron scattering. We unambiguously observe the absence of a skyrmion lattice (or A-phase) in bulk MnGe and its onset under a small Mn/Fe substitution. The A-phase is there endowed with an exceptional skyrmion density, and is stabilized within a very large temperature region and a field range which scales with the Fe concentration. Our findings highlight the possibility to fine-tune properties of skyrmion lattices by means of chemical doping.
We construct the general free energy governing long-wavelength magnetism in two-dimensional oxide heterostructures, which applies irrespective of the microscopic mechanism for magnetism. This leads, in the relevant regime of weak but non-negligible spin-orbit coupling, to a rich phase diagram containing in-plane ferromagnetic, spiral, cone, and skyrmion lattice phases, as well as a nematic state stabilized by thermal fluctuations. The general conclusions are vetted by a microscopic derivation for a simple model with Rashba spin-orbit coupling.
Magnetic skyrmions are swirling spin textures with topologically protected noncoplanarity. Recently, skyrmions with the topological number of unity have been extensively studied in both experiment and theory. We here show that a skyrmion crystal with an unusually high topological number of two is stabilized in itinerant magnets at zero magnetic field. The results are obtained for a minimal Kondo lattice model on a triangular lattice by an unrestricted large-scale numerical simulation and variational calculations. We find that the topological number can be switched by a magnetic field as $2\lef…
A skyrmion crystal (SkX) expressed as a multiple number of spiral modulations manifests itself not only in its peculiar magnetic texture but also in nontrivial transport properties originating from an emergent magnetic field. We here report our numerical results for multiple SkXs in a centrosymmetric tetragonal crystal system. By performing simulated annealing for an effective spin model for itinerant magnets, we find that three types of the SkXs with the skyrmion numbers of one and two, which are characterized by different superpositions of helices, are stabilized in the ground state, and are…
Skyrmions are topological spin textures of interest for fundamental science and applications. Previous theoretical studies have focused on systems with broken bulk inversion symmetry, where skyrmions are stabilized by easy-axis anisotropy. We investigate here systems that break surface inversion symmetry, in addition to possible broken bulk inversion. This leads to two distinct Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) terms with strengths $D_\perp$, arising from Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC), and $D_\parallel$ from Dresselhaus SOC. We show that skyrmions become progressively more stable with increasing $…

Magnetic skyrmions have attracted considerable attention recently for their huge potential in spintronic applications. Generally skyrmions are big compared to the atomic lattice constant, which allows for the Ginzburg-Landau type description in the continuum limit. Such a description successfully captures the main experimental observations on skyrmions in B20 compound without inversion symmetry. Skyrmions can also exist in inversion-symmetric magnets with competing interactions. Here we derive a general Ginzburg-Landau theory for skyrmions in these magnets valid in the long wavelength limit. W…
The stability of the four known stationary points of the cubic helimagnet energy functional: the ferromagnetic state, the conical helix, the conical helicoid, and the skyrmion lattice, is studied by solving the corresponding spectral problem. The only stable points are the ferromagnetic state at high magnetic field and the conical helix at low field, and there is no metastable state. Thermal fluctuations around the stationary point, included to quadratic order in the saddle point expansion, destabilize the conical helix in a region where the ferromagnetic state is unstable. Thus, a new interme…
In a $β$-Mn-type chiral magnet Co$_9$Zn$_9$Mn$_2$, we demonstrate that the magnetic field-driven collapse of a room temperature metastable topological skyrmion lattice passes through a regime described by a partial topological charge inversion. Using Lorentz transmission electron microscopy, the magnetization distribution was observed directly as the magnetic field was swept antiparallel to the original skyrmion core magnetization, i.e. negative magnetic fields. Due to the topological stability of skyrmions, a direct transition of the metastable skyrmion lattice to the equilibrium helical stat…

Topological spin structures, such as magnetic skyrmions, hold great promises for data storage applications, thanks to their inherent stability. In most cases, skyrmions are stabilized by magnetic fields in non-centrosymmetric systems displaying the chiral Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange interaction, while spontaneous skyrmion lattices have been reported in centrosymmetric itinerant magnets with long-range interactions. Here, a spontaneous anti-biskyrmion lattice with unique topology and chirality is predicted in the monolayer of a semiconducting and centrosymmetric metal halide, NiI$_2$. Our fi…
We demonstrate a mechanism of significant reduction, including complete elimination, of the external magnetic field required for the stabilization of a skyrmion lattice (SkX) phase in a frustrated triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnet (AFM) with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. It is achieved by coupling of such a AFM plane to a reference ferromagnetic (FM) layer, which generates an effective field cooperating with the external magnetic field. If the FM layer shows some axial single-ion anisotropy then the effective field can also be generated in zero external field due to a spontaneous …
Motivated by the importance of antiferromagnetic skyrmions as building blocks of next-generation data storage and processing devices, we report theoretical and computational analysis of a model for a spin-orbit coupled correlated magnet on a triangular lattice. We find that two distinct antiferromagnetic skyrmion crystal (AF-SkX) states can be stabilized at low temperatures in the presence of external magnetic field. The results are obtained via Monte Carlo simulations on an effective magnetic model derived from the microscopic electronic Hamiltonian consisting of Rashba spin-orbit coupling, a…

Skyrmion crystal formation and temperature -- magnetic field phase diagram of the frustrated tirangular-lattice Heisenberg magnet with easy-axis masugnetic anisotropy
Chiral magnets, such as MnSi, display a rich finite temperature phase diagram in an applied magnetic field. The most unusual of the phases encountered is the so called A-phase characterized by a triangular lattice of skyrmion tubes. Its existence cannot be captured within a mean-field treatment of a Landau-Ginzburg functional but thermal fluctuations to Gaussian order are required to stabilize it. In this note we go beyond Gaussian order in a fully non-perturbative study of a three dimensional lattice spin model using classical Monte Carlo simulations. We demonstrate that the A-phase is indeed…
