Motivated by the importance of antiferromagnetic skyrmions as building blocks of next-generation data storage and processing devices, we report theoretical and computational analysis of a model for a spin-orbit coupled correlated magnet on a triangular lattice. We find that two distinct antiferromagnetic skyrmion crystal (AF-SkX) states can be stabilized at low temperatures in the presence of external magnetic field. The results are obtained via Monte Carlo simulations on an effective magnetic model derived from the microscopic electronic Hamiltonian consisting of Rashba spin-orbit coupling, as well as the Hund's rule coupling of electrons to large classical spins. The two AF-SkX phases are understood to originate from a classical spin liquid state that exists at low but finite temperatures. These AF-SkX states can be easily distinguished from each other in experiments as they are characterized by peaks at distinct momenta in the spin structure factor which is directly measured in neutron scattering experiments. We also discuss examples of materials where the model as well as the two AF-SkX states can be realized.
We discover magnetic phases hosting highly-elusive and technologically important antiferromagnetic skyrmion quasiparicles in a model for Rashba-coupled Hund's insulator. The results are based on unbiased simulations of a classical superexchange model derived, in this work, from a realistic microscopic electronic Hamiltonian. We also discover a novel skyrmion density wave groundstate characterized by a ($Q,Q$) modulation in the local skyrmion density map. A unique inhomogeneous state characterized by a circular pattern in spin structure factor and filamentary real-space textures is identified a…
Skyrmions are topological spin textures of interest for fundamental science and applications. Previous theoretical studies have focused on systems with broken bulk inversion symmetry, where skyrmions are stabilized by easy-axis anisotropy. We investigate here systems that break surface inversion symmetry, in addition to possible broken bulk inversion. This leads to two distinct Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) terms with strengths $D_\perp$, arising from Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC), and $D_\parallel$ from Dresselhaus SOC. We show that skyrmions become progressively more stable with increasing $…
We report a microscopic electronic mechanism for nanoscale skyrmion formation and topological metalicity. The mechanism, which relies on combining the classic double-exchange (DE) physics with the Rashba spin orbit coupling (SOC), not only provides an accurate understanding of existence of skyrmions but also explains key features in small angle neutron scattering (SANS) and Lorentz transmission electron microscopy (LTEM) data on thin films of a variety of magnetic metals. The skyrmion states are characterized as disordered topological metals via explicit calculations of Bott index and Hall con…
Engineering non trivial topological phases in materials, specially skyrmion-like arrangements, has been of great interest in the last decade due to its potential technological applications. In this work, we study a model of electrons coupled to a magnetic texture in the kagome lattice interacting with magnetic moments via Rashba spin orbit coupling in the large Hund interaction limit. We obtain the effective spin Hamiltonian and study the emergent low temperature phases under an external magnetic field using large scale Monte Carlo simulations. We show that strong geometric frustration, charac…
Recent developments have led to an explosion of activity on skyrmions in three-dimensional (3D) chiral magnets. Experiments have directly probed these topological spin textures, revealed their nontrivial properties, and led to suggestions for novel applications. However, in 3D the skyrmion crystal phase is observed only in a narrow region of the temperature-field phase diagram. We show here, using a general analysis based on symmetry, that skyrmions are much more readily stabilized in two-dimensional (2D) systems with Rashba spin-orbit coupling. This enhanced stability arises from the competit…
The origin of chiral magnetic structures in ultrathin films of magnetic metals is analyzed. It is shown that the Lifshitz-type invariant term in the macroscopic thermodynamic potential can be derived from spin-orbit Rashba Hamiltonian in two dimensional electron gas (2DEG). The former is the prerequisite for existence of spin cycloid, skyrmions and other chiral phenomena observed in thin films. The estimation of the period of spin cycloid gives the value of an order of 10 nm that agrees well with the results of scanning probe microscopy observation reported in the literature.
We construct the general free energy governing long-wavelength magnetism in two-dimensional oxide heterostructures, which applies irrespective of the microscopic mechanism for magnetism. This leads, in the relevant regime of weak but non-negligible spin-orbit coupling, to a rich phase diagram containing in-plane ferromagnetic, spiral, cone, and skyrmion lattice phases, as well as a nematic state stabilized by thermal fluctuations. The general conclusions are vetted by a microscopic derivation for a simple model with Rashba spin-orbit coupling.
We theoretically study noncoplanar spin textures in polar magnetic conductors. Starting from the Kondo lattice model with the Rashba spin-orbit coupling, we derive an effective spin model with generalized Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interactions including the anisotropic and antisymmetric exchange interactions. By performing simulated annealing for the effective model, we find that a vortex crystal of Néel type is stabilized even in the absence of a magnetic field. Moreover, we demonstrate that a Bloch-type vortex crystal, which is usually associated with the Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling,…
We study the system of strongly interacting spinor bosons in a square lattice subject to the isotropic Rashba SOC $ α=β$. It supports collinear spin-bond correlated magnetic Y-x phase, a gapped in-commensurate (IC-) co-planar IC-XY-y phase, a non-coplanar commensurate (C-) $ 3 \times 3 $ Skyrmion crystal phase (SkX). The state at the Abelian point $ α=β=π/2 $ is just an AFM state in a rotated basis. Slightly away from the point, we identify a spurious $ U(1) $ symmetry, develop a novel and non-perturbative method to calculate not only the gap, but also the excitation spectrum due to the order …
We study the interplay between the Zeeman field and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in harmonically trapped Fermi gases loaded into a two-dimensional single-band tight-binding optical lattice. Using the Bogoliubov-de Gennes theory, we find that the Zeeman field combined with a Rashba SOC gives rise to $(i)$ Fulde-Ferrell-like superfluidity and $(ii)$ skyrmion-like polarization textures near the edges of the system. We also discussed the effects of interaction, temperature, SOC anisotropy and Zeeman field anisotropy on the superfluid ground state and polarization textures.
Recent experiments on twisted bilayer graphene show an anomalous quantum Hall (AQH) effect at filling of $3$ electrons per moirè unit cell. The AQH effect arises in an insulating state with both valley- and ferromagnetic order. We argue, that weak doping of such a system leads to the formation of a novel topological spin texture, a `double-tetarton lattice'. The building block of this lattice, the `double-tetarton', is a spin configuration which covers $1/4$ of the unit-sphere twice. In contrast to skyrmion lattices, the net magnetization of this magnetic texture vanishes. Only at large magnet…
The topological Hall effect (THE), given by a composite of electric and topologically non-trivial spin texture is commonly observed in magnetic skyrmion crystals. Here we present a study of the THE of electrons coupled to antiferromagnetic Skyrmion lattices (AF-SkX). We show that, in the strong Hund coupling limit, topologically non-trivial phases emerge at specific fillings. Interestingly, at low filling an external field controlling the magnetic texture, drives the system from a conventional insulator phase to a phase exhibiting THE. Such behavior suggests the occurrence of a topological tra…
Motivated by recent experiments in Gd$_3$Ru$_4$Al$_{12}$, we demonstrate the emergence of atomic scale Skyrmions in interacting spins on a breathing kagome lattice with competing nearest neighbor ferromagnetic and next nearest neighbor antiferromagnetic exchange interactions. In the presence of an applied longitudinal magnetic field, the ground state magnetic order evolves from a helical phase at low fields to a Skyrmion phase at intermediate fields before finally entering a polarized phase at high fields. The size of each Skyrmion spans only two unit cells of the lattice, in contrast to tens …
We study magnetic textures realized in noncentrosymmetric Kondo lattice models, in which localized magnetic moments weakly interact with itinerant electrons subject to Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings. By virtue of state-of-the-art numerical simulations as well as variational calculations, we uncover versatile multiple-$Q$ orderings under zero magnetic field, which are found to originate in the instabilities of the Fermi surface whose spin degeneracy is lifted by the spin-orbit couplings. In the case with equally-strong Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings, which is known to …
We report small angle neutron scattering of the skyrmion lattice in MnSi using an experimental set-up that minimizes the effects of demagnetizing fields and double scattering. Under these conditions the skyrmion lattice displays resolution-limited Gaussian rocking scans that correspond to a magnetic correlation length in excess of several hundred μm. This is consistent with exceptionally well-defined long-range order. We further establish the existence of higher-order scattering, discriminating parasitic double-scattering with Renninger scans. The field and temperature dependence of the higher…
The continuous progress in fabricating low-dimensional systems with large spin-orbit couplings has reached a point in which nowadays materials may display spin-orbit splitting energies ranging from a few to hundreds of meV. This situation calls for a better understanding of the interplay between the spin-orbit coupling and other interactions ubiquitously present in solids, in particular when the spin-orbit splitting is comparable in magnitude with characteristic energy scales such as the Fermi energy and the phonon frequency. In this article, the two-dimensional Fröhlich electron-phonon proble…
As in such 2D systems as the XY model, topological (or singularity point) defects are thought to play a crucial role in the phase transitions of 3D spin systems. In double exchange (DE) ferromagnets, the conduction electrons are strongly coupled with core spins through Hund's rule, and in the presence of non-trivial spin texture, acquire a Berry phase contribution to the anomalous Hall effect (AHE). We combine Hall and magnetization data on CrO$_2$ with a thermodynamical scaling hypothesis to confirm that the critical behavior of the topological-spin-defect density is consistent with that of t…
We report the direct observation of a magnetic-feld induced long-wavelength spin spiral modulation in the chiral compound Ba3TaFe3Si2O14. This new spin texture emerges out of a chiral helical ground state, and is hallmarked by the onset of a unique contribution to the bulk electric polarization, the sign of which depends on the crystal chirality. The periodicity of the feld induced modulation, several hundreds of nm depending on the field value, is comparable to the length scales of mesoscopic topological defects such as skyrmions, merons and solitons. The phase transition and observed thresho…
In this work, we study strongly interacting spinor atoms in a lattice subject to a 2 dimensional (2d) anisotropic Rashba type of spin orbital coupling (SOC) and an Zeeman field. We find the interplay between the Zeeman field and the SOC provides a new platform to host rich and novel classes of quantum commensurate and in-commensurate phases, excitations and phase transitions. These commensurate phases include two collinear states at low and high Zeeman field, two co-planar canted states at Mirror reflected SOC parameters respectively. Most importantly, there are non-coplanar incommensurate Sky…
We investigate the phase diagrams of the effective spin models derived from Fermi-Hubbard and Bose-Hubbard models with Rashba spin-orbit coupling, using string bond states, one of the quantum tensor network states methods. We focus on the role of quantum fluctuation effect in stabilizing the exotic spin phases in these models. For boson systems, and when the ratio between inter-particle and intra-particle interaction $λ> 1$, the out-of-plane ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) phases obtained from quantum simulations are the same to those obtained from classic model. However, the qu…
Coulomb interactions of few ($ N $) electrons confined in a disk shaped quantum dot, with a large magnetic field $B=B^*$ applied in the z-direction (orthogonal to the dot), produce a fully spin polarized ground state. We numerically study the splitting of the levels corresponding to the multiplet of total spin $S=N/2$ (each labeled by a different total angular momentum $ J_z $) in presence of an electric field parallel to $ B $, coupled to $ S $ by a Rashba term. We find that the first excited state is a spin exciton with a reversed spin at the origin. This is reminiscent of the Quantum Hall F…
Spin-orbit coupling with bosons gives rise to novel properties that are absent in usual bosonic systems. Under very general conditions, the conventional ground state wavefunctions of bosons are constrained by the "no-node" theorem to be positive-definite. In contrast, the linear-dependence of spin-orbit coupling leads to complex-valued condensate wavefunctions beyond this theorem. In this article, we review the study of this class of unconventional Bose-Einstein condensations focusing on their topological properties. Both the 2D Rashba and 3D $\vecσ \cdot \vec{p}$-type Weyl spin-orbit coupling…
