Experimental efforts to stabilize ferromagnetism in ultrathin films of transition metal oxides have so far failed, despite expectations based on density functional theory (DFT) and DFT+U. Here, we investigate one of the most promising materials, SrRuO$_3$, and include correlation effects beyond DFT by means of dynamical mean field theory. In agreement with experiment we find an intrinsic thickness limitation for metallic ferromagnetism in SrRuO$_3$ thin films. Indeed, we demonstrate that the realization of ultrathin ferromagnetic films is out of reach of standard thin-film techniques. Proposing charge carrier doping as a new route to manipulate thin films, we predict room temperature ferromagnetism in electron-doped SrRuO$_3$ ultra thin films.
Ultrathin films of the itinerant ferromagnet SrRuO$_3$ were studied using transport and magnto-optic polar Kerr effect. We find that below 4 monolayers the films become insulating and their magnetic character changes as they loose their simple ferromagnetic behavior. We observe a strong reduction in the magnetic moment which for 3 monolayers and below lies in the plane of the film. Exchange-bias behavior is observed below the critical thickness, and may point to induced antiferromagnetism in contact with ferromagnetic regions.
Using density functional calculations we have examined the evolution of the electronic structure of SrRuO3 films grown on SrTiO3 substrates as a function of film thickness. At the ultrathin limit of two monolayers (RuO2-terminated surface) the films are found to be at the brink of a spin-state transition which drives the system to an antiferromagnetic and insulating state. Increasing the film thickness to four monolayers, one finds the surprising result that two entirely different solutions coexist. An antiferromagnetic insulating solution coexists with a metallic solution corresponding to an …
We have investigated electronic and magnetic properties of ultrathin SrRuO$_{3}$ (SRO) film grown on (111) SrTiO$_{3}$ substrate using the {\it ab initio} electronic structure calculations. Ru-terminated SRO (111) film suffers from strong surface atomic relaxations, while SrO$_{3}$-terminated one preserves the surface structure of ideal perovskites. Both Ru- and SrO$_{3}$-terminated SRO (111) film show unexpected interlayer antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure at the surface, but with different characters and mechanisms. The AFM structure for the former results from the large surface atomic relax…
In quantum matters hosting electron-electron correlation and spin-orbit coupling, spatial inhomogeneities, arising from competing ground states, can be essential for determining and understanding topological properties. A prominent example is Hall anomalies observed in SrRuO3 films, which were interpreted in terms of either magnetic skyrmion-induced topological Hall effect (THE) or inhomogeneous anomalous Hall effect (AHE). To clarify this ambiguity, we systematically investigated the AHE of SrRuO3 ultrathin films with controllable inhomogeneities in film thickness (tSRO). By harnessing the st…
SrRuO$_3$ (SRO) films are known to exhibit insulating behavior as their thickness approaches four unit cells. We employ electron energy$-$loss (EEL) spectroscopy to probe the spatially resolved electronic structures of both insulating and conducting SRO to correlate them with the metal$-$insulator transition (MIT). Importantly, the central layer of the ultrathin insulating film exhibits distinct features from the metallic SRO. Moreover, EEL near edge spectra adjacent to the SrTiO$_3$ (STO) substrate or to the capping layer are remarkably similar to those of STO. The site$-$projected density of…
We observed a hump-like feature in Hall effects of SrRuO$_3$ ultrathin films, and systematically investigated it with controlling thicknesses, temperatures and magnetic fields. The hump-like feature is extremely stable, even surviving as a magnetic field is tilted by as much as 85$^\circ$. Based on the atomic-level structural analysis of a SrRuO$_3$ ultrathin film with a theoretical calculation, we reveal that atomic rumplings at the thin-film surface enhance Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, which can generate stable chiral spin textures and a hump-like Hall effect. Moreover, temperature dep…
The electronic structure of SrRuO$_3$ thin film with thickness from 50 to 1 unit cell (u.c.) is investigated via the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) technique at the O K-edge to unravel the intriguing interplay of orbital and charge degrees of freedom. We found that orbital-selective quantum confinement effect (QCE) induces the splitting of Ru $4d$ orbitals. At the same time, we observed a clear suppression of the electron-hole continuum across the metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) occurring at the 4 u.c. sample. From these two clear observations we conclude that QCE gives rise to…
A notion of the Berry phase is a powerful means to unravel the non-trivial role of topology in various novel phenomena observed in chiral magnetic materials and structures. A celebrated example is the intrinsic anomalous Hall effect (AHE) driven by the non-vanishing Berry phase in the momentum space. As the AHE is highly dependent on details of the band structure near the Fermi edge, the Berry phase and AHE can be altered in thin films whose chemical potential is tunable by dimensionality and disorder. Here, we demonstrate that in ultrathin SrRuO$_3$ films the Berry phase can be effectively ma…
Ruthenium-based perovskite systems are attractive because their Structural, electronic and magnetic properties can be systematically engineered. SrRuO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ superlattice, with its period consisting of one unit cell each, is very sensitive to strain change. Our first-principles simulations reveal that in the high tensile strain region, it transits from a ferromagnetic (FM) metal to an antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulator with clear tilted octahedra, while in the low strain region, it is a ferromagnetic metal without octahedra tilting. Detailed analyses of three spin-down Ru-t$_{2g}$ orbita…
Lattice structure can dictate electronic and magnetic properties of a material. Especially, reconstruction at a surface or heterointerface can create properties that are fundamentally different from those of the corresponding bulk material. We have investigated the lattice structure on the surface and in the thin films of epitaxial SrRuO3 with the film thickness up to 22 pseudo-cubic unit cells (u.c.), using the combination of surface sensitive low energy electron diffraction and bulk sensitive scanning transmission electron microscopy. Our analysis indicates that, in contrast to many perovski…
We present a study of the thickness dependence of magnetism and electrical conductivity in ultra thin La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 films grown on SrTiO3 (110) substrates. We found a critical thickness of 10 unit cells below which the conductivity of the films disappeared and simultaneously the Curie temperature (TC) increased, indicating a magnetic insulating phase at room temperature. These samples have a TC of about 560 K with a significant saturation magnetization of 1.2 +- 0.2 muB/Mn. The canted antiferromagnetic insulating phase in ultra thin films of n< 10 coincides with the occurrence of a higher s…
We report on the functionalization of multiferroic BiFeO3 epitaxial films for spintronics. A first example is provided by the use of ultrathin layers of BiFeO3 as tunnel barriers in magnetic tunnel junctions with La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 and Co electrodes. In such structures, a positive tunnel magnetoresistance up to 30% is obtained at low temperature. A second example is the exploitation of the antiferromagnetic spin structure of a BiFeO3 film to induce a sizeable (~60 Oe) exchange bias on a ferromagnetic film of CoFeB, at room temperature. Remarkably, the exchange bias effect is robust upon magnetic f…
Recently, nanolaminated ternary carbides have attracted immense interest due to the concomitant presence of both ceramic and metallic properties. Here, we grow nanolaminate Ti3AlC2 thin films by pulsed laser deposition on c-axis-oriented sapphire substrates and, surprisingly, the films are found to be highly oriented along the (103) axis normal to the film plane, rather than the (000l) orientation. Multiple characterization techniques are employed to explore the structural and chemical quality of these films, the electrical and optical properties, and the device functionalities. The 80-nm thic…
Motivated by the goal of realizing topological phases in thin films and heterostructures of correlated oxides, we propose here a quantum anomalous Hall insulator (QAHI) in ultrathin films of double perovskites based on mixed 3d-5d or 3d-4d transition metal ions, grown along the [111] direction. Considering the specific case of ultrathin Ba2FeReO6, we present a theoretical analysis of an effective Hamiltonian derived from first-principles. We establish that a strong spin-orbit coupling at Re site, t2g symmetry of the low-energy d-bands, polarity of its [111] orientation of perovskite structure,…
Divergent density of states (DOS) can induce extraordinary phenomena such as significant enhancement of superconductivity and unexpected phase transitions. Moreover, van Hove singularities (VHSs) are known to lead to divergent DOS in two-dimensional (2D) systems. Despite the recent interest in VHSs, only a few controllable cases have been reported to date. In this work, we investigate the electronic band structures of a 2D VHS with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and control transport properties by utilizing an atomically ultrathin SrRuO$_3$ film. By applying electric fields with alk…
Magnetism and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) are two quintessential ingredients underlying novel topological transport phenomena in itinerant ferromagnets. When spin-polarized bands support nodal points/lines with band degeneracy that can be lifted by SOC, the nodal structures become a source of Berry curvature; this leads to a large anomalous Hall effect (AHE). Contrary to three-dimensional systems that naturally host nodal points/lines, two-dimensional (2D) systems can possess stable nodal structures only when proper crystalline symmetry exists. Here we show that 2D spin-polarized band structures…
Magnetic order at room temperature induced by atomic lattice defects, like vacancies, interstitials or pairs of them, has been observed in a large number of different nonmagnetic hosts, such as pure graphite, oxides and silicon-based materials. High Curie temperatures and time independent magnetic response at room temperature indicate the extraordinary robustness of this new phenomenon in solid state magnetism. In this work, we review experimental and theoretical results in pure TiO$_2$ (anatase), which magnetic order can be triggered by low-energy ion irradiation. In particular, we discuss th…
