Magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) magnetometry is one of the most widely employed techniques for the characterization of ferromagnetic thin-film samples. Some information, such as coercive fields or anisotropy strengths can be obtained without any knowledge of the optical and magneto-optical (MO) properties of the material. On the other hand, a quantitative analysis, which requires a precise knowledge of the material's index of refraction n and the MO coupling constants K and G is often desirable, for instance for the comparison of samples, which are different with respect to ferromagnetic layer thicknesses, substrates, or capping layers. While the values of the parameters n and the linear MO coupling parameter K reported by different authors usually vary considerably, the relevant quadratic MO coupling parameters G of Fe are completely unknown. Here, we report on measurements of the thickness dependence (0-60nm) of the linear and quadratic MOKE in epitaxial bcc-Fe(001) wedge-type samples performed at a commonly used laser wavelength of 670nm. By fitting the thickness dependence we are able to extract a complete set of parameters n, K, (G11 - G12), and G44 for the quantitative description of the MOKE of bcc-Fe(001). We find sizable different n, K, and G parameters for films thinner than about 10nm as compared to thicker films, which is indicative of a thickness dependence of the electronic properties or of surface contributions to the MOKE. The effect size of the quadratic MOKE is found to be about a third of the record values recently reported for Co2FeSi.
We have studied the magneto-optical spectra of ultrathin magnetic films deposited on Si substrates coated with an oxide layer (SiOx). We find that the Kerr rotation angle and the ellipticity of ~1 nm thick CoFeB thin films, almost transparent to visible light, show a strong dependence on the thickness of the SiOx layer. The Kerr signal from the 1 nm CoFeB thin film can be larger than that of ~100 nm thick CoFeB films for a given SiOx thickness and light wavelength. The enhancement of the Kerr signal occurs when optical interference takes place within the SiOx layer. Interestingly, under such r…
Materials that demonstrate large magnetoresistance have attracted significant interest for many decades. Recently, extremely large tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) has been reported by several groups across ultrathin CrI$_3$ by exploiting the weak antiferromagnetic coupling between adjacent layers. Here, we report a comparative study of TMR in all three chromium trihalides (CrX$_3$, X= Cl, Br, or I) in the two-dimensional limit. As the materials exhibit different transition temperatures and interlayer magnetic ordering in the ground state, tunneling measurements allow for an easy determination o…
Thin FeRh film was extensively studied recently, and an emergent substrate- and capping-dependent interfacial ferromagnetism (FM) was widely observed in experiments. However, the voltage modulation of this interfacial ferromagnetism is barely studied, which would have profound applications in antiferromagnetic (AFM) FeRh-based magnetoelectric-random access memory (MeRAM). Using ab initio techniques, we comparatively study the interfacial ferromagnetic properties and magnetoelectric responses of ultrathin FeRh films capped by heavy transition metal Ta. We find that Ta capping reverses the phase…
We report on systematic ab-initio investigations of Co and Cr interlayers embedded in Fe(001)/MgO/Fe(001) magnetic tunnel junctions, focusing on the changes of the electronic structure and the transport properties with interlayer thickness. The results of spin-dependent ballistic transport calculations reveal options to specifically manipulate the tunnel magnetoresistance ratio. The resistance area products and the tunnel magnetoresistance ratios show a monotonous trend with distinct oscillations as a function of the Cr thickness. These modulations are directly addressed and interpreted by mea…
In this study, the microscopic origins of the voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy (VCMA) in 3d-ferromagnetic metals are revealed. Using in-situ X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy that provides a high quantum efficiency, electric-field-induced changes in orbital magnetic moment and magnetic dipole Tz terms in ultrathin Co films are demonstrated. An orbital magnetic moment difference of 0.013μB. was generated in the presence of electric fields of +(-)0.2 V/nm. The VCMA of Co was properly estimated by the induced change in orbital magnetic moment, according to the perturbation theory model. The i…
Ultrathin Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ single crystals laid on Scotch tape are investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy at $4$K and in a magnetic field up to $35$T. The magneto-transmittance spectra of the Bi$_{2}$% Te$_{3}$/tape composite are analyzed as a two-layer system and the optical conductivity of Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ at different magnetic fields are extracted. We find that magnetic field modifies the optical conductivity in the following ways: (1) Field-induced transfer of the optical weight from the lower frequency regime ($<250$cm$^{-1}$) to the higher frequency regime ($% >250$cm$^{…
Pulse laser deposited La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 ultrathin films on SrTiO3 substrates were characterized by polar and longitudinal Kerr magneto-optical spectroscopy. An agreement between experimental and theoretical spectra was achieved for a 10.7 nm thick film, while a distinction in the Kerr effect amplitudes was obtained for a 5 nm thick film. This points to the slight suppression of ferromagnetism by interface effects. Nevertheless, the room temperature ferromagnetism of the 5 nm thick film was clearly demonstrated. All the studied films exhibit magneto-optical properties similar to single crystals an…
Hanle magnetoresistance (HMR) is a type of magnetoresistance where interplay of the spin Hall effect, Hanle-type spin precession, and spin-dependent scattering at the top/bottom surfaces in a heavy metal controls the effect. In this study, we modulate HMR in ultrathin Pt by ionic gating, where the surface Rashba field created by a strong electric field at the interface between the ionic gate and Pt plays the dominant role in the modulation. This finding can facilitate investigations of gate-tunable, spin-related effects and fabrication of spin devices.
We present the observation of strain induced sign reversal of anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) in LCMO (LCMO) ultrathin films (thickness 4 nm) deposited on STO (001) substrate (STO). We have also observed unusually large AMR in LCMO/STO thin films with thickness of 6 nm below but close to its Curie temperature (TC) which decrease as the film thickness increases. The sign reversal of AMR (with a maximum value of - 6) with magnetic field or temperature for the 4 nm thin film may be attributed to the increase in tensile strain in the plane of the thin film which in turn facilitates the rotatio…
The influence of gate voltage, temperature and magnetic field on domain wall (DW) creep dynamics is investigated in Pt/Co/GdOx films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and imaged by a scanning magneto-optical Kerr effect technique. The DW creep velocity can be controlled by an electric field applied to the Co/GdOx interface via a linear modulation of the activation energy barrier with gate voltage. At low speeds, the DW velocity can be changed significantly by a gate voltage, but the effect is diminished as the DW velocity increases, which limits electric field control of fast DW motion.
We have studied the magneto-optical Kerr effect and optical reflectance of perpendicular magnetized Co/Pt films on self-assembly two-dimensional polystyrene spheres. It is shown that the magneto-optical and the reflectance spectra are correlated to each other. Calculations have shown that the magneto-optical Kerr rotation and the Kerr ellipticity spectra are governed by the resonant coupling of light to the excitations of surface plasmon polaritons and modified by the sphere diameters. These effects lead to the possibility of developing new magnetoplasmonic nanosensors.
Magneto-optic Kerr effect can probe the process of magnetization reversal in ferromagnetic thin films and thus be used as an alternative to magnetometry. Kerr effect is wavelength-dependent and the Kerr rotation can reverse sign, vanishing at particular wavelengths. We investigate epitaxial heterostructures of ferromagnetic manganite, La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$Mn$_{0.9}$Ru$_{0.1}$O$_3$, by polar Kerr effect and magnetometry. The manganite layers are separated by or interfaced with a layer of nickelate, NdNiO$_3$. Kerr rotation hysteresis loops of trilayers, with two manganite layers of different thi…
We calculate the linear magneto-optical Kerr rotation for CeSb in the near-infrared spectral range. Using an exact formula for large Kerr rotation angles and a simplified electronic structure of CeSb we find at \hbar ω= 0.46 eV a Kerr rotation of 90 degree which then for decreasing ωjumps to -90 degree as recently observed. We identify the general origin of possible 180 degree polarization rotations as resulting from mainly nonmagnetic optical properties, in particular from the ratio of the dominant interband resonance frequency to the plasma frequency. The dependence of the Kerr rotation on m…
Using symmetry arguments and a tight-binding model, we show that for layered collinear anti- ferromagnets, magneto-optic effects can be generated and manipulated by controlling crystal symmetries through a gate voltage. This provides a promising route for electric field manipulation of the magneto-optic effects without modifying the underlying magnetic structure. We further demonstrate the gate control of magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE) in bilayer MnPSe3 using first-principles calculations. The field-induced inversion symmetry breaking effect leads to gate-controllable MOKE whose direction of…
Magneto-optical Kerr effect, normally found in magnetic materials with nonzero magnetization such as ferromagnets and ferrimagnets, has been known for more than a century. Here, using first-principles density functional theory, we demonstrate large magneto-optical Kerr effect in high temperature noncollinear antiferromagnets Mn$_{3}X$ ($X$ = Rh, Ir, or Pt), in contrast to usual wisdom. The calculated Kerr rotation angles are large, being comparable to that of transition metal magnets such as bcc Fe. The large Kerr rotation angles and ellipticities are found to originate from the lifting of the…
Time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) and Brillouin light scattering (BLS) spectroscopy are important techniques for the investigation of magnetization dynamics. Within this article, we calculate analytically the MOKE and BLS signals from prototypical spin-wave modes in the ferromagnetic layer. The reliability of the analytical expressions is confirmed by optically exact numerical calculations. Finally, we discuss the dependence of the MOKE and BLS signals on the ferromagnetic layer thickness.
Brillouin light scattering (BLS) measurements were performed for (17-120) Angstrom thick Cu/Ni/Cu/Si(001) films. A monotonic dependence of the frequency of the uniform mode on an in-plane magnetic field H was observed both on increasing and on decreasing H in the range (2-14) kOe, suggesting the absence of a metastable collinear perpendicular ground state. Further investigation by magneto-optical vector magnetometry (MOKE-VM) in an unconventional canted-field geometry provided evidence for a domain structure where the magnetization is canted with respect to the perpendicular to the film. Spin …
We employ density functional theory using the modified Becke-Johnson (mBJ) approach to investigate the electronic and magneto-optical properties of N-doped NaTaO$_3$. The mBJ results reveal a half metallic nature of NaTaO$_2$N, in contrast to results obtained by the generalized gradient approximation. We find a giant polar Kerr rotation of 2.16$^{\circ}$ at 725 nm wave length (visible region), which is high as compared to other half metallic perovskites as well as to the prototypical half metal PtMnSb.
We report the large polar magnetooptical Kerr effect in L10-MnxGa epitaxial films with giant perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in a wide composition range. The Kerr rotation was enhanced by a factor of up to 10 by decreasing Mn atomic concentration, which most likely arises from the variation of the effective spin-orbit coupling strength, compensation effect of magnetic moments at different Mn atom sites, and overall strain. The Kerr ellipticity and the magnitude of the complex Kerr angle is found to have more complex composition-dependence that varies with the photon energy. These L10-MnxGa f…
Ultrathin films of the itinerant ferromagnet SrRuO$_3$ were studied using transport and magnto-optic polar Kerr effect. We find that below 4 monolayers the films become insulating and their magnetic character changes as they loose their simple ferromagnetic behavior. We observe a strong reduction in the magnetic moment which for 3 monolayers and below lies in the plane of the film. Exchange-bias behavior is observed below the critical thickness, and may point to induced antiferromagnetism in contact with ferromagnetic regions.
We report the engineering of the polar magnetooptical (MO) Kerr effect in perpendicularly magnetized L10-MnAl epitaxial films with remarkably tuned magnetization, strain, and structural disorder by varying substrate temperature (Ts) during molecular-beam epitaxy growth. The Kerr rotation was enhanced by a factor of up to 5 with Ts increasing from 150 to 350 oC as a direct consequence of the improvement of the magnetization. A similar remarkable tuning effect was also observed on the Kerr ellipticity and the magnitude of the complex Kerr angle, while the phase of the complex Kerr angle appears …
Kerr rotation and Superconducting QUantum Interference Device (SQUID) magnetometry measurements were performed on ultrathin (Ga$_{0.95}$Mn$_{0.05}$)As layers. The thinner layers (below 250 Å) exhibit magnetic properties different than those of thicker ones, associated with different microstructure, and some degree of inhomogeneity. The temperature dependence of the field-cooled-magnetization of the layers is recorded after successive low temperature annealings. While the Curie temperature of the thicker layer (250 Å) is nearly unchanged, the critical temperature of the thinner layers is enhanc…

The contour integration technique applied to calculate the optical conductivity tensor at finite temperatures in the case of inhomogeneous surface layered systems within the framework of the spin-polarized relativistic screened Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker band structure method is extended to arbitrary polarizations of the electric field. It is shown that besides the inter-band contribution, the contour integration technique also accounts for the intra-band contribution too. Introducing a layer-resolved complex Kerr angle, the importance of the first, non-magnetic buffer layer below the ferromagneti…
We report the magneto optic Kerr effect (MOKE) angle of Au magnetically excited by spin accumulation. We perform time resolved polar MOKE measurements on Au/Co heterostructures. In our experiment, the ultrafast optical excitation of the Co drives spin accumulation into an adjacent Au layer. The spin accumulation, together with spin-orbit coupling, leads to non-zero terms in the off-diagonal conductivity tensor of Au, which we measure by recording the polarization and ellipticity of light reflected from the Au surface for photon energies between 1.3 and 3.1 eV. At energies near the interband tr…
We report on time- and angle-resolved transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect spectroscopy in the soft x-ray range that, by analysis via polarization-dependent magnetic scattering simulations, allows us to determine the spatio-temporal and element-specific evolution of femtosecond laser-induced spin dynamics in nanostructured magnetic materials. In a ferrimagnetic GdFe thin film system, we correlate a reshaping spectrum of the magneto-optical Kerr signal to depth-dependent magnetization dynamics and disentangle contributions due to non-equilibrium electron transport and nanoscale heat diffusion…
Transport in ultrathin films of LaNiO3 evolves from a metallic to a strongly localized character as the film's thickness is reduced and the sheet resistance reaches a value close to h/e2, the quantum of resistance in two dimensions. In the intermediate regime, quantum corrections to the Drude low- temperature conductivity are observed; they are accurately described by weak localization theory. Remarkably, the negative magnetoresistance in this regime is isotropic, which points to magnetic scattering associated with the proximity of the system to either a spin glass state or the charge ordered …
We report a giant enhancement of the mid-infrared (MIR) magneto-optical complex Kerr angle (polarization change of reflected light) in a variety of materials grown on SiC. In epitaxially-grown multilayer graphene, the Kerr angle is enhanced by a factor of 68, which is in good agreement with Kerr signal modeling. Strong Kerr enhancement is also observed in Fe films grown on SiC and Al-doped bulk SiC. Our experiments and modelling indicate that the enhancement occurs at the high-energy edge of the SiC reststrahlen band where the real component of the complex refractive index n passes through uni…
Using density functional theory calculations, we have found an enhanced magneto-optical Kerr effect in Fe/insulator interfaces. The results of our study indicate that interfacial Fe atoms in the Fe films have a low-dimensional nature, which causes the following two effects: (i) The diagonal component $σ_{xx}$ of the optical conductivity decreases dramatically because the hopping integral for electrons between Fe atoms is suppressed by the low dimensionality. (ii) The off-diagonal component $σ_{xy}$ of the optical conductivity does not change at low photon energies, but it is enhanced at photon…
The thickness evolution of in-plane magnetization reversal in ultrathin films is studied with a theoretical model that takes account of surface roughness typical of epitaxial growth. Guided by Néel's model, step edge sites of monolayer-height islands are assigned a two-fold anisotropy in addition to a four-fold anisotropy at all sites. Coercivity is found to depend essentially on both the film thickness and the partial coverage of the topmost layer. Its qualitative features are determined primarily by sample geometry and the size of the step anisotropy compared to the domain wall energy. Magne…
The magnetoconductive properties of ultrathin Pb films deposited on Si(111) are measured and compared with density-functional electronic band-structure calculations on two-dimensional, free-standing, 1 to 8 monolayers thick Pb(111) slabs. A description with free-standing slabs is possible because it turned out that the Hall coefficient is independent of the substrate and of the crystalline order in the film. We show that the oscillations in sign of the Hall coefficient observed as a function of film thickness can be explained directly from the thickness dependent variations of the electronic b…
Co$_2$FeSi(100) films with L2$_1$ structure deposited onto MgO(100) were studied exploiting both longitudinal (LMOKE) and quadratic (QMOKE) magneto-optical Kerr effect. The films exhibit a huge QMOKE signal with a maximum contribution of up to 30 mdeg, which is the largest QMOKE signal in reflection that has been measured thus far. This large value is a fingerprint of an exceptionally large spin-orbit coupling of second or higher order. The Co$_2$FeSi(100) films exhibit a rather large coercivity of 350 and 70 Oe for film thicknesses of 22 and 98 nm, respectively. Despite the fact that the film…
We examined the photo-induced dynamics of ferromagnetic Co/Pt thin films demonstrating perpendicular magnetic anisotropy with element specificity using resonant polar magneto-optical Kerr effect measurements at Pt~N${}_{6,7}$ and Co~M${}_{2,3}$ edges with an x-ray free electron laser. The obtained results showed a clear element dependence of photo-induced demagnetization time scales: $τ_\textrm{demag.}^\textrm{Co}=80\pm60~\textrm{fs}$ and $τ_\textrm{demag.}^\textrm{Pt}=640\pm140~\textrm{fs}$. This dependence is explained by the induced moment of the Pt atom by current flow from the Co layer th…
The magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) is often assumed to be proportional to the magnetisation of a magnetically ordered metallic sample; in metallic ferrimagnets with chemically distinct sublattices, such as rare-earth transition-metal alloys, it depends on the difference between the sublattice contributions. Here we show that in a highly spin polarized, fully compensated ferrimagnet, where the sublattices are chemically similar, MOKE is observed even when the net moment is strictly zero. We analyse the spectral ellipsometry and MOKE of Mn 2 Ru x Ga, and show that this behaviour is due to a …
Using combined magnetometry and ferromagnetic resonance studies, it is shown that introduction of a hydrocarbon cover layer leads to an increase of the contribution of the surface anisotropy to the effective magnetic anisotropy energy of hexagonal close-packed 0001 cobalt films, largely enhancing the perpendicular anisotropy. Due to a weak electronic interaction of the organic molecules with the Co atoms, an increase of surface anisotropy could be explained by the presence of an electric field at the organic-material/Co interface and by modification of surface atoms charge configuration.
We carried out magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) and magnetization measurements on a single crystal of Ni2.00Mn1.16Ga0.84 in a longitudinal geometry. While there had been reports of polar geometry measurements so far, we show that - against earlier predictions - surface magnetic states of the martensite and the austenite can be also probed efficiently via longitudinal MOKE. A single variant magnetic state, which occurs at room temperature, is characterized by ferromagnetic hysteresis loops similar to standard ferromagnets. Temperature dependencies of Kerr rotation were found to be linearly pr…
We report the first experimental study of graphene transferred on \b{eta}-Si3N4(0001)/Si(111). Our work provides a comprehensive quantitative understanding of the physics of ultrathin Si3N4 as a gate dielectric for graphene-based devices. The Si3N4 film was grown on Si(111) under ultra-high vacuum (UHV) conditions and investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Subsequently, a graphene flake was deposited on top of it by a polymer-based transfer technique, and a Hall bar device was fabricated from the graphene flake. STM was employed again to study the graphene flake under UHV conditi…

Structural, electronic and dielectric properties of high-quality ultrathin BaTiO3 films are investigated. The films, which are grown by ozone-assisted molecular beam epitaxy on Nb-doped SrTiO3 (001) substrates and having thicknesses as thin 8 unit cells (3.2 nm), are unreconstructed and atomically smooth with large crystalline terraces. A strain-driven transition to 3D island formation is observed for films of of 13 unit cells thickness (5.2 nm). The high structural quality of the surfaces, together with the dielectric properties similar to bulk BaTiO3 and dominantly TiO2 surface termination, …
Epitaxial ultrathin Fe films on fcc Cu(001) exhibit a spin spiral (SS), in contrast to the ferromagnetism of bulk bcc Fe. We study the in-plane and out-of-plane Fermi surfaces (FSs) of the SS in 8 monolayer Fe/Cu(001) films using energy dependent soft x-ray momentum-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We show that the SS originates in nested regions confined to out-of-plane FSs, which are drastically modified compared to in-plane FSs. From precise reciprocal space maps in successive zones, we obtain the associated real space compressive strain of 1.5+-0.5% along c-axis. An autocorrelation ana…

Significative enhance in magnetocaloric effect due to finite size and surface effects is reported in Terbium(Tb) thin films in the helimagnetic phase (corresponding to a temperature range from $T_C$=219 K to $T_N$=231 K), for external fields of the order of kOe. For a Tb thin film of 6 monolayers submitted to an applied field ($Δ$H= 30 kOe, $Δ$H= 50 kOe and $Δ$H= 70 kOe) we report a significative change in adiabatic temperature, $Δ$T/$Δ$H, near the Néel temperature, of the order ten times higher than that observed for Tb bulk. On the other hand, for small values of the magnetic field, large th…
Here we report the measurement of the interfacial spin accumulation induced by the spin Hall effect in Pt and W thin films using magneto-optical Kerr microscopy. We show that the Kerr rotation has opposite sign in Pt and W and scales linearly with current density. By comparing the experimental results with ab-initio calculations of the spin Hall and magneto-optical Kerr effects, we quantitatively determine the current-induced spin accumulation at the Pt interface as $5*10^{-12} μ_B$A$^{-1}$cm$^2$ per atom. From thickness-dependent measurements, we determine the spin diffusion length in a singl…
Electrodynamic responses from three-dimensional (3D) topological insulators (TIs) are characterized by the universal magnetoelectric $E\cdot B$ term constituent of the Lagrangian formalism. The quantized magnetoelectric coupling, which is generally referred to as topological magnetoelectric (TME) effect, has been predicted to induce exotic phenomena including the universal low-energy magneto-optical effects. Here we report the experimental demonstration of the long-sought TME effect, which is exemplified by magneto-optical Faraday and Kerr rotations in the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) states o…
Magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) is an efficient approach to probe surface magnetization in thin film samples. Here we present a wide-field MOKE technique that adopts a K$ö$hler illumination scheme to characterize the current-induced damping-like spin-orbit torque (DL-SOT) in micronsized and unpatterned magnetic heterostructures with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Through a current-induced hysteresis loop shift analysis, we quantify the DL-SOT efficiency of a Ta-based heterostructure with bar-shaped geometry, Hall-cross geometry, and unpatterned geometry to be $|ξ_{DL}|\approx$ 0.08. The…
We have performed magneto-optical Kerr spectroscopy measurements on intercalated transition-metal dichalcogenide Fe$_{0.25}$TaS$_{2}$ in the polar Kerr geometry as a function of temperature, magnetic field, and wavelength. The Kerr angle exhibits pronounced peaks at $\sim$775 nm (1.6 eV) and $\sim$515 nm (2.4 eV), which we attribute to spin-dependent interband optical transitions arising from states in the vicinity of the Fermi energy. Below the ferromagnetic transition temperature (165 K), we observe strongly wavelength- and magnetic-field-dependent Kerr signal. At a fixed wavelength, the mag…

We have performed a systematic magneto-optical Kerr spectroscopy study of GaMnAs with varying Mn densities as a function of temperature, magnetic field, and photon energy. Unlike previous studies, the magnetization easy axis was perpendicular to the sample surface, allowing us to take remanent polar Kerr spectra in the absence of an external magnetic field. The remanent Kerr angle strongly depended on the photon energy, exhibiting a large positive peak at $\sim1.7$ eV. This peak increased in intensity and blue-shifted with Mn doping and further blue-shifted with annealing. Using a 30-band ${\b…
We have studied the propagation characteristics of spin wave modes in a permalloy stripe by time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect techniques. We observe a beating interference pattern in the time domain under the influence of an electrical square pulse excitation at the center of the stripe. We also probe the non-reciprocal behavior of propagating spin waves with a dependence on the external magnetic field. Spatial dependence studies show that localized edge mode spin waves have a lower frequency than spin waves in the center of the stripe, due to the varying magnetization vector across th…
The spin dependent properties of epitaxial Fe3O4 thin films on GaAs(001) are studied by the ferromagnetic proximity polarization (FPP) effect and magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE). Both FPP and MOKE show oscillations with respect to Fe3O4 film thickness, and the oscillations are large enough to induce repeated sign reversals. We attribute the oscillatory behavior to spin-polarized quantum well states forming in the Fe3O4 film. Quantum confinement of the t2g states near the Fermi level provides an explanation for the similar thickness dependences of the FPP and MOKE oscillations.
