Antiferromagnetic metals attract tremendous interest for memory applications due to their expected fast response dynamics in the terahertz frequency regime. Reading from and writing information into these materials is not easily achievable using magnetic fields, due to weak high-order magneto-optical signals and robustness of the magnetic structure against external magnetic fields. Polarized electromagnetic radiation is a promising alternative for probing their response, however, when ideal antiferromagnetic symmetry is present, this response vanishes. Hence, in this work we combine first-principles simulations with measurements of the polar magneto-optical Kerr effect under external magnetic fields, to study magneto-optical response of antiferromagnetic M$_2$As (M=Cr, Mn, and Fe). We devise a computational scheme to compute the magnetic susceptibility from total-energy changes using constraints on magnetic-moment tilting. Our predictions of the spectral dependence of polar magneto-optical Kerr rotation and ellipticity allow us to attribute these effects to breaking of the magnetic symmetry. We show that tilting affects the exchange interaction, while the spin-orbit interaction remains unaffected as the tilting angle changes. Our work provides understanding of the polar magneto-optical Kerr effect on a band structure level and underscores the importance of the magnetic susceptibility when searching for materials with large magneto-optical response.
We have studied the magneto-optical Kerr effect and optical reflectance of perpendicular magnetized Co/Pt films on self-assembly two-dimensional polystyrene spheres. It is shown that the magneto-optical and the reflectance spectra are correlated to each other. Calculations have shown that the magneto-optical Kerr rotation and the Kerr ellipticity spectra are governed by the resonant coupling of light to the excitations of surface plasmon polaritons and modified by the sphere diameters. These effects lead to the possibility of developing new magnetoplasmonic nanosensors.
Magneto-optic Kerr effect can probe the process of magnetization reversal in ferromagnetic thin films and thus be used as an alternative to magnetometry. Kerr effect is wavelength-dependent and the Kerr rotation can reverse sign, vanishing at particular wavelengths. We investigate epitaxial heterostructures of ferromagnetic manganite, La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$Mn$_{0.9}$Ru$_{0.1}$O$_3$, by polar Kerr effect and magnetometry. The manganite layers are separated by or interfaced with a layer of nickelate, NdNiO$_3$. Kerr rotation hysteresis loops of trilayers, with two manganite layers of different thi…
We calculate the linear magneto-optical Kerr rotation for CeSb in the near-infrared spectral range. Using an exact formula for large Kerr rotation angles and a simplified electronic structure of CeSb we find at \hbar ω= 0.46 eV a Kerr rotation of 90 degree which then for decreasing ωjumps to -90 degree as recently observed. We identify the general origin of possible 180 degree polarization rotations as resulting from mainly nonmagnetic optical properties, in particular from the ratio of the dominant interband resonance frequency to the plasma frequency. The dependence of the Kerr rotation on m…
Using symmetry arguments and a tight-binding model, we show that for layered collinear anti- ferromagnets, magneto-optic effects can be generated and manipulated by controlling crystal symmetries through a gate voltage. This provides a promising route for electric field manipulation of the magneto-optic effects without modifying the underlying magnetic structure. We further demonstrate the gate control of magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE) in bilayer MnPSe3 using first-principles calculations. The field-induced inversion symmetry breaking effect leads to gate-controllable MOKE whose direction of…
Magneto-optical Kerr effect, normally found in magnetic materials with nonzero magnetization such as ferromagnets and ferrimagnets, has been known for more than a century. Here, using first-principles density functional theory, we demonstrate large magneto-optical Kerr effect in high temperature noncollinear antiferromagnets Mn$_{3}X$ ($X$ = Rh, Ir, or Pt), in contrast to usual wisdom. The calculated Kerr rotation angles are large, being comparable to that of transition metal magnets such as bcc Fe. The large Kerr rotation angles and ellipticities are found to originate from the lifting of the…
Time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) and Brillouin light scattering (BLS) spectroscopy are important techniques for the investigation of magnetization dynamics. Within this article, we calculate analytically the MOKE and BLS signals from prototypical spin-wave modes in the ferromagnetic layer. The reliability of the analytical expressions is confirmed by optically exact numerical calculations. Finally, we discuss the dependence of the MOKE and BLS signals on the ferromagnetic layer thickness.
We employ density functional theory using the modified Becke-Johnson (mBJ) approach to investigate the electronic and magneto-optical properties of N-doped NaTaO$_3$. The mBJ results reveal a half metallic nature of NaTaO$_2$N, in contrast to results obtained by the generalized gradient approximation. We find a giant polar Kerr rotation of 2.16$^{\circ}$ at 725 nm wave length (visible region), which is high as compared to other half metallic perovskites as well as to the prototypical half metal PtMnSb.
We report the large polar magnetooptical Kerr effect in L10-MnxGa epitaxial films with giant perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in a wide composition range. The Kerr rotation was enhanced by a factor of up to 10 by decreasing Mn atomic concentration, which most likely arises from the variation of the effective spin-orbit coupling strength, compensation effect of magnetic moments at different Mn atom sites, and overall strain. The Kerr ellipticity and the magnitude of the complex Kerr angle is found to have more complex composition-dependence that varies with the photon energy. These L10-MnxGa f…
We report the engineering of the polar magnetooptical (MO) Kerr effect in perpendicularly magnetized L10-MnAl epitaxial films with remarkably tuned magnetization, strain, and structural disorder by varying substrate temperature (Ts) during molecular-beam epitaxy growth. The Kerr rotation was enhanced by a factor of up to 5 with Ts increasing from 150 to 350 oC as a direct consequence of the improvement of the magnetization. A similar remarkable tuning effect was also observed on the Kerr ellipticity and the magnitude of the complex Kerr angle, while the phase of the complex Kerr angle appears …
The contour integration technique applied to calculate the optical conductivity tensor at finite temperatures in the case of inhomogeneous surface layered systems within the framework of the spin-polarized relativistic screened Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker band structure method is extended to arbitrary polarizations of the electric field. It is shown that besides the inter-band contribution, the contour integration technique also accounts for the intra-band contribution too. Introducing a layer-resolved complex Kerr angle, the importance of the first, non-magnetic buffer layer below the ferromagneti…
We report the magneto optic Kerr effect (MOKE) angle of Au magnetically excited by spin accumulation. We perform time resolved polar MOKE measurements on Au/Co heterostructures. In our experiment, the ultrafast optical excitation of the Co drives spin accumulation into an adjacent Au layer. The spin accumulation, together with spin-orbit coupling, leads to non-zero terms in the off-diagonal conductivity tensor of Au, which we measure by recording the polarization and ellipticity of light reflected from the Au surface for photon energies between 1.3 and 3.1 eV. At energies near the interband tr…
We report on time- and angle-resolved transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect spectroscopy in the soft x-ray range that, by analysis via polarization-dependent magnetic scattering simulations, allows us to determine the spatio-temporal and element-specific evolution of femtosecond laser-induced spin dynamics in nanostructured magnetic materials. In a ferrimagnetic GdFe thin film system, we correlate a reshaping spectrum of the magneto-optical Kerr signal to depth-dependent magnetization dynamics and disentangle contributions due to non-equilibrium electron transport and nanoscale heat diffusion…
We report a giant enhancement of the mid-infrared (MIR) magneto-optical complex Kerr angle (polarization change of reflected light) in a variety of materials grown on SiC. In epitaxially-grown multilayer graphene, the Kerr angle is enhanced by a factor of 68, which is in good agreement with Kerr signal modeling. Strong Kerr enhancement is also observed in Fe films grown on SiC and Al-doped bulk SiC. Our experiments and modelling indicate that the enhancement occurs at the high-energy edge of the SiC reststrahlen band where the real component of the complex refractive index n passes through uni…
Using density functional theory calculations, we have found an enhanced magneto-optical Kerr effect in Fe/insulator interfaces. The results of our study indicate that interfacial Fe atoms in the Fe films have a low-dimensional nature, which causes the following two effects: (i) The diagonal component $σ_{xx}$ of the optical conductivity decreases dramatically because the hopping integral for electrons between Fe atoms is suppressed by the low dimensionality. (ii) The off-diagonal component $σ_{xy}$ of the optical conductivity does not change at low photon energies, but it is enhanced at photon…
Co$_2$FeSi(100) films with L2$_1$ structure deposited onto MgO(100) were studied exploiting both longitudinal (LMOKE) and quadratic (QMOKE) magneto-optical Kerr effect. The films exhibit a huge QMOKE signal with a maximum contribution of up to 30 mdeg, which is the largest QMOKE signal in reflection that has been measured thus far. This large value is a fingerprint of an exceptionally large spin-orbit coupling of second or higher order. The Co$_2$FeSi(100) films exhibit a rather large coercivity of 350 and 70 Oe for film thicknesses of 22 and 98 nm, respectively. Despite the fact that the film…
We examined the photo-induced dynamics of ferromagnetic Co/Pt thin films demonstrating perpendicular magnetic anisotropy with element specificity using resonant polar magneto-optical Kerr effect measurements at Pt~N${}_{6,7}$ and Co~M${}_{2,3}$ edges with an x-ray free electron laser. The obtained results showed a clear element dependence of photo-induced demagnetization time scales: $τ_\textrm{demag.}^\textrm{Co}=80\pm60~\textrm{fs}$ and $τ_\textrm{demag.}^\textrm{Pt}=640\pm140~\textrm{fs}$. This dependence is explained by the induced moment of the Pt atom by current flow from the Co layer th…
The magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) is often assumed to be proportional to the magnetisation of a magnetically ordered metallic sample; in metallic ferrimagnets with chemically distinct sublattices, such as rare-earth transition-metal alloys, it depends on the difference between the sublattice contributions. Here we show that in a highly spin polarized, fully compensated ferrimagnet, where the sublattices are chemically similar, MOKE is observed even when the net moment is strictly zero. We analyse the spectral ellipsometry and MOKE of Mn 2 Ru x Ga, and show that this behaviour is due to a …
We carried out magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) and magnetization measurements on a single crystal of Ni2.00Mn1.16Ga0.84 in a longitudinal geometry. While there had been reports of polar geometry measurements so far, we show that - against earlier predictions - surface magnetic states of the martensite and the austenite can be also probed efficiently via longitudinal MOKE. A single variant magnetic state, which occurs at room temperature, is characterized by ferromagnetic hysteresis loops similar to standard ferromagnets. Temperature dependencies of Kerr rotation were found to be linearly pr…

Electrodynamic responses from three-dimensional (3D) topological insulators (TIs) are characterized by the universal magnetoelectric $E\cdot B$ term constituent of the Lagrangian formalism. The quantized magnetoelectric coupling, which is generally referred to as topological magnetoelectric (TME) effect, has been predicted to induce exotic phenomena including the universal low-energy magneto-optical effects. Here we report the experimental demonstration of the long-sought TME effect, which is exemplified by magneto-optical Faraday and Kerr rotations in the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) states o…
Magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) is an efficient approach to probe surface magnetization in thin film samples. Here we present a wide-field MOKE technique that adopts a K$ö$hler illumination scheme to characterize the current-induced damping-like spin-orbit torque (DL-SOT) in micronsized and unpatterned magnetic heterostructures with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Through a current-induced hysteresis loop shift analysis, we quantify the DL-SOT efficiency of a Ta-based heterostructure with bar-shaped geometry, Hall-cross geometry, and unpatterned geometry to be $|ξ_{DL}|\approx$ 0.08. The…
We have performed magneto-optical Kerr spectroscopy measurements on intercalated transition-metal dichalcogenide Fe$_{0.25}$TaS$_{2}$ in the polar Kerr geometry as a function of temperature, magnetic field, and wavelength. The Kerr angle exhibits pronounced peaks at $\sim$775 nm (1.6 eV) and $\sim$515 nm (2.4 eV), which we attribute to spin-dependent interband optical transitions arising from states in the vicinity of the Fermi energy. Below the ferromagnetic transition temperature (165 K), we observe strongly wavelength- and magnetic-field-dependent Kerr signal. At a fixed wavelength, the mag…
We have studied the magneto-optical spectra of ultrathin magnetic films deposited on Si substrates coated with an oxide layer (SiOx). We find that the Kerr rotation angle and the ellipticity of ~1 nm thick CoFeB thin films, almost transparent to visible light, show a strong dependence on the thickness of the SiOx layer. The Kerr signal from the 1 nm CoFeB thin film can be larger than that of ~100 nm thick CoFeB films for a given SiOx thickness and light wavelength. The enhancement of the Kerr signal occurs when optical interference takes place within the SiOx layer. Interestingly, under such r…

Here we report the measurement of the interfacial spin accumulation induced by the spin Hall effect in Pt and W thin films using magneto-optical Kerr microscopy. We show that the Kerr rotation has opposite sign in Pt and W and scales linearly with current density. By comparing the experimental results with ab-initio calculations of the spin Hall and magneto-optical Kerr effects, we quantitatively determine the current-induced spin accumulation at the Pt interface as $5*10^{-12} μ_B$A$^{-1}$cm$^2$ per atom. From thickness-dependent measurements, we determine the spin diffusion length in a singl…

We have performed a systematic magneto-optical Kerr spectroscopy study of GaMnAs with varying Mn densities as a function of temperature, magnetic field, and photon energy. Unlike previous studies, the magnetization easy axis was perpendicular to the sample surface, allowing us to take remanent polar Kerr spectra in the absence of an external magnetic field. The remanent Kerr angle strongly depended on the photon energy, exhibiting a large positive peak at $\sim1.7$ eV. This peak increased in intensity and blue-shifted with Mn doping and further blue-shifted with annealing. Using a 30-band ${\b…
We have studied the propagation characteristics of spin wave modes in a permalloy stripe by time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect techniques. We observe a beating interference pattern in the time domain under the influence of an electrical square pulse excitation at the center of the stripe. We also probe the non-reciprocal behavior of propagating spin waves with a dependence on the external magnetic field. Spatial dependence studies show that localized edge mode spin waves have a lower frequency than spin waves in the center of the stripe, due to the varying magnetization vector across th…
Magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) magnetometry is one of the most widely employed techniques for the characterization of ferromagnetic thin-film samples. Some information, such as coercive fields or anisotropy strengths can be obtained without any knowledge of the optical and magneto-optical (MO) properties of the material. On the other hand, a quantitative analysis, which requires a precise knowledge of the material's index of refraction n and the MO coupling constants K and G is often desirable, for instance for the comparison of samples, which are different with respect to ferromagnetic la…
The spin dependent properties of epitaxial Fe3O4 thin films on GaAs(001) are studied by the ferromagnetic proximity polarization (FPP) effect and magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE). Both FPP and MOKE show oscillations with respect to Fe3O4 film thickness, and the oscillations are large enough to induce repeated sign reversals. We attribute the oscillatory behavior to spin-polarized quantum well states forming in the Fe3O4 film. Quantum confinement of the t2g states near the Fermi level provides an explanation for the similar thickness dependences of the FPP and MOKE oscillations.
We investigate theoretically an angle dependence of enhancement of polar magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) obtained thanks to a deposition of a paramagnetic Diluted Magnetic Semiconductor (DMS) layer on one-dimensional photonic crystal layer. Our transfer matrix method based calculations conducted for TE and TM polarizations of the incident light predict up to an order of magnitude stronger MOKE for a (Ga,Fe)N DMS layer when implementing the proposed design. The maximum enhancement for TE and TM polarization occurs for the light incidence at the normal and at the Brewster angle, respectively.…
Magnetic and spintronic media have offered fundamental scientific subjects and technological applications. Magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE) microscopy provides the most accessible platform to study the dynamics of spins, magnetic quasi-particles, and domain walls. However, in the research of nanoscale spin textures and state-of-the-art spintronic devices, optical techniques are generally restricted by the extremely weak magneto-optical activity and diffraction limit. Highly sophisticated, expensive electron microscopy and scanning probe methods thus have come to the forefront. Here, we show th…
The resonant magnetic reflectivity of Co/Mg multilayers around the Co L2,3 absorption edge is simulated then measured on a specifically designed sample. The dichroic signal is obtained when making the difference between the two reflectivities measured with the magnetic field applied in two opposite directions parallel to the sample surface. The simulations show that the existence of magnetic dead layers at the interfaces between the Co and Mg layers leads to an important increase of the dichroic signal measured in the vicinity of the third Bragg peak that otherwise should be negligible. The me…
Considerable research interest has been attracted to noncollinear magnetic structures for their intriguing physics and promising applications. In this work, based on relativistic density functional theory, we reveal the interesting magnetic order and relevant properties in monolayer RuF$_4$, which can be exfoliated from its bulk phase. Although the spins on Ru ions are almost antiferromagnetically aligned between nearest-neighbors, weak ferromagnetism is generated because of the antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction as well as the single-ion anisotropy. A prominent magneto-optical Ke…
Chromium trihalides (CrI$_3$, CrBr$_3$ and CrCl$_3$) form a prominent family of isostructural insulating layered materials in which ferromagnetic order has been observed down to the monolayer. Here we provide a comprehensive computational study of magneto-optical properties that are used as probes for the monolayer ferromagnetic order: magnetic circular dichroism and magneto-optic Kerr effect. Using a combination of density functional and Bethe-Salpeter theories, we calculate both the optical absorption and the magneto-optical Kerr angle spectra, including both excitonic effects and spinorial …
We investigated the magnetization dynamics of a patterned Co$_{25}$Fe$_{75}$-based heterostructure with a novel optical measurement technique that we call microfocused frequency-resolved magneto optic Kerr effect ($μ$FR-MOKE). We measured the magnetic field dependence of the dynamical spin-wave susceptibility and recorded a spatial map of the spin-waves excited by a microwave antenna. We compare these results to those obtained on the same sample with the established microfocused Brillouin light scattering technique. With both techniques, we find a spin-wave propagation length of 5.6$μ$m at 10G…
We propose a first-principles scheme for the description of the magneto-optical kerr effect within density functional theory (DFT). Though the computation of Kerr parameters is often done within DFT, starting from the conductivity or the dielectric tensor, there is no formal justification to this choice. As a first steps, using as reference materials iron, cobalt and nickel we show that pseudo-potential based calculations give accurate predictions. Then we derive a formal expression for the full dielectric tensor in terms of the density-density correlation function. The derived equation is exa…
In the non-collinear antiferromagnet Mn$_3$Sn, we compare simultaneous measurements of the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and the magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) through two magnetic phase transitions: the high-temperature paramagnetic/antiferromagnetic phase transition at the Néel temperature ($T_N \approx$420~K), and a lower-temperature incommensurate magnetic ordering at $T_1 \approx$270~K. While both the AHE and MOKE are sensitive to the same underlying symmetries of the antiferromagnetic non-collinear spin order, we find that the transition temperatures measured by these two techniques un…

We present measurement and analysis techniques that allow the complete complex magneto-conductivity tensor to be determined from mid-infrared (11-1.6 micron; 100-800 meV) measurements of the complex Faraday (theta_F) and Kerr (theta_K) angles. Since this approach involves measurement of the geometry (orientation axis and ellipticity of the polarization) of transmitted and reflected light, no absolute transmittance or reflectance measurements are required. Thick film transmission and reflection equations are used to convert the complex theta_F and theta_K into the complex longitudinal conductiv…
Magneto-optical spectroscopy based on the transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect (TMOKE) is a sensitive method for investigation of magnetically-ordered media. However, in magnetic materials the optical transitions are usually characterized by spectrally broad resonances with widths considerably exceeding the Zeeman splitting in the magnetic field. Here we investigate experimentally and theoretically the TMOKE in the vicinity of relatively narrow optical resonances provided by confined quantum systems. For experimental demonstration we use the exciton resonance in a (Cd,Mn)Te diluted magnetic …
We report measurements of the polar Kerr effect, proportional to the out-of-plane component of the magnetization, in thin films of the magnetically doped topological insulator $(\text{Cr}_{0.12}\text{Bi}_{0.26}\text{Sb}_{0.62})_2\text{Te}_3$. Measurements of the complex Kerr angle, $Θ_K$, were performed as a function of photon energy in the range $0.8\text{ eV}<\hbarω<3.0\text{ eV}$. We observed a peak in the real part of $Θ_K(ω)$ and zero crossing in the imaginary part that we attribute to resonant interaction with a spin-orbit avoided crossing located $\approx$ 1.6 eV above the Fermi energy.…
